A Short History Image: Prison Gate Brigade Home The Salvation Army - Recycling Programs The Salvation Army in Sydney first operated a “Prison Gate Brigade Home” in Castlereagh Street (now buried under the Central Railway Station) from 1886 – 1887. This moved to 169 Albion Street, Surry Hills (1887 – 1891); 21 Parramatta Road, Ashfield (1891 – 1894); Silver Street, St Peters (1894 – 1902); Edgeware Road, Enmore (1902 – 1910); and finally to Bellevue Street, St Peters (1910 – to date). For about 126 years The Salvation Army has operated in Sydney - initially as the Prison Gate Brigade, then Miroma Industries, Red Shield Industries, Red Shield Family Stores and now Salvos Stores.
You will need 5 glass jars (vintage if you are lucky enough to find them), white paint, ribbon and tea lights. To give a snow effect, dapple white paint on the outside of the jars. When the paint has dried tie some Christmas ribbon around the top and pop in a tea light.
Tip : Choose cups & saucers with the same colour pallet for grouping. Use as a table centre piece, ambiance lighting or if you have an old style fire, place on the mantel.

Meet Mita Barot - Store Manager We spent some time with our Store Manager at Minchinbury so you get to know the Salvos Stores team . . . How long have you been with Salvos Stores? 20 years. I commenced in the warehouse at Minchinbury (NSW) as a sorter. I was then transferred to the Minchinbury Store as a shop assistant and was promoted to Store Manager. After 6 years I was moved to Blacktown & Ashfield and then Marayong. I finally ‘came home’ to Minchinbury in 2011. What is the most unusual item you have had donated? A taxidermy fox! It had its nails and whiskers still attached. A customer came into the shop one day and was so pleased when she saw it she immediately purchased it for her son. Share an inspiring story. A woman came into the store and asked if I could help her mother. She was suffering from depression and had not left the house in years. Her daughter wanted to know if she could get her mum to leave the house could she volunteer for us. When the mother came to us she was very down on herself and said she could not do anything and was useless. She now volunteers with us three days a week. I had a visit from her daughter; she thanked me for saving her mother’s life. I thought ‘This is The Salvation Army. This is what we are here for.’

Finding An Agent That’s Right For You What happened when the Salvonista Mobile Boutique rolled into town . . . On September 27th Salvos Stores rolled into town launching its Salvonista Mobile Boutique at Belmore Park, Sydney. You may be asking, ‘what is a Salvonista?’ Like a fashionista they take pride in how they look on the outside, but Salvonistas also feel good on the inside - shop at the Salvos and you’re helping the community and the environment. Lynette Bolton was announced as the Salvonista ambassador. Lynette was the perfect fit for our mobile boutique as she is a regular fashion commentator for Channel 7’s Sunrise & Morning Show.

After the opening ribbon was cut Lynette showed us her styling by dressing two lucky Salvonistas, Joanna & Daniella. With racks and racks of vintage, retro and brand named clothing and accessories it wasn’t long before the marque was bustling with Salvonistas!! The mobile boutique is fully self sufficient with two change rooms inside the van, a mobile computer kiosk and mobile phone charging station. Solar panels were installed to supply electricity to the van.
