This has enabled me to help homeless youth, the elderly in our aged care centres, people fighting addiction and women and children who have been abused. For the last two years it has been an honour to serve as a Salvos Stores Chaplain. This work has enabled me to connect with hundreds of staff, volunteers and customers. It has been a privilege to serve the Lord in this way.”

“We wanted to give people who couldn’t reach a Salvation Army store the opportunity to select modern and vintage fashion items at fantastic prices,” says Salvos Stores General Manager, Neville Barrett. “Re-using and recycling clothes means that we can look unique through affordable fashion, and we help the environment and the community by reducing landfill and assisting those less fortunate than ourselves.”
month, Salvos Stores collected the gold prize in the ‘Best Shopper Marketing Campaign’ category and silver in the ‘Best Integrated Communications Campaign under $1million’. “The award will make people more aware of what The Salvation Army is about. We are about recycling – and we’re about transforming people’s lives,” says Mr Barrett.

“A lot of people aged under 35 are perhaps not as connected with The Salvation Army as their parents or grandparents were. They don’t quite understand the significance of us being in the streets working with ministry and mission. “We’re trying to bring them into the Salvonista campaign, let them see what we do and get to know us.”

Salvos Stories . . . . . .
Sophaly Phok, Volunteer at Canley Heights Salvos Store “I arrived in Australia in 1983. I lost all my family members in Cambodia. Six sisters and a brother were killed by members of Khmer Rouge.” “Life was becoming better in Australia when I met another fellow Cambodian and married him. We have two children, but when the youngest was just one month old, he decided to return to Cambodia. I struggled as a single mum having to raise two kids and a mortgage burden to carry!” “I come to volunteer at Canley Heights Salvos Store as my first work experience ever in Australia. I was nervous and thought my English would not be good enough! However from day one, my fears were put to rest because everyone was friendly and kind. I felt very safe at Salvos Store.” “I feel I have found a new freedom. I love working here and I love my new friends. Thank you Salvos Stores”
Grace Zhu, Store Manager at North Parramatta Salvos Store “I came from Shanghai, a growing city of many millions where things are bright, glossy and beautiful. You can imagine it is quite an adjustment dealing with second hand goods at Salvos Stores.” “I have come to appreciate the value of recycling. It is important and the responsibility of everyone to recycle where they can. It not only saves money but it reduces waste and saves the environment.” “I have also developed a knack of being very resourceful. You have to be creative because you often don’t always have the very thing you need when you want it, especially when you don’t want to run to the shop and buy it new. Armed with this skill, I often surprise customers with my solutions to their needs, which gives me a lot of satisfaction.”
