Letter from the Editor Dear Salysians, What decade is your favorite? What is old, is now new. What is new, used to be old. In the May issues, we hope you will find an editorial that inspires you, or an editorial that makes you reminisce with a smile, or one that makes you question what the future of fashion holds. Enjoy the May issues! As always, I hope you enjoy your escape! Hugs and Love, Sonya Alyse Lawyer SALYSÉ, Founder and Editor in Chief

Final Thoughts on the Theme The Past is Trending by Elle Bialozynski
Fashion is cyclical, and trends are often recycled. Trends reoccur, and new styles have traces from the past. Clothing is sometimes advertised as looking like it is from a specific decade, when it is labeled “retro” or “vintage inspired.” A modern twist is added to many old styles to make them relevant in today’s world. Specifically, I have noticed looks from the 1960s and the 1990s inspiring present day fashion. Of course, new styles are also developed, but traces of fashion history are always lingering. Band T-shirts were an iconic symbol of the 90s from the rebellious grunge phase that was adopted by many people. This ultra-casual staple was recently updated by being hidden under a velvet dress or a simple tank top. These two items are highly contrasting; a worn-down shirt paired with velvet, a traditionally luxurious material. This style combination was just trending. It is an unexpected combination that is a perfect example of a style inspired by the 90s. Other trends that have reoccurred in recent years are wide sleeves and wide pant legs. Bell bottoms were at peak popularity in the 1960s, and were mostly seen at the bottom of denim jeans. I’ve seen these wide ends move from pants to shirts in different ways. Knit flare pants with multicolored patterns, and wide sleeves have been trending. Some shirts have wide flares beginning at the middle of the sleeve, and others have a flare closer to the bottom of the sleeve. All of these variations connect to similar styles from decades ago.
The 1960s were a very different time in history compared to the 1990s. The 1960s had hippies and the 1990s had grunge. Both of these subcultural groups were characterized by rejecting society in one way or another. However, hippie culture was different than that of the lifestyle surrounding grunge music. Grunge was characterized by bands like Nirvana, who wore ripped clothing, and dark colors. Hippie culture was about peace, floral prints, and flower crowns. These two eras are a perfect example of how politics, music, fashion, and culture are closely linked together I think the 1960s and 1990s were a very important and interesting time in fashion. Making the connection between trends and where they come from is very intriguing and important to understand when studying fashion history. When a current fashion trend links to the past, it almost feels like a version of time travel, which is pretty cool to say the least.
SALYSÉ SALYSÉ Magazine is a photography magazine, featuring beauty, fashion, and conceptual art editorials. We do not seek to define beauty with one narrow idea, but with myriad viewpoints Vintage is right next to emerging designers, who are right next to established designers. We are looking for creatives who push the envelope, take chances, and disregard the status quo.
