Letter from the Editor Dear Salysians, Imagine this... One minute you are working at your desk making good progress on your very long To Do List. You get up to pour yourself a caffeinated beverage to squeeze out a few more hours in your day, and next thing you know, you are flat on your back in the worst pain you have ever felt in your life (and you know pain because you have had two major surgeries.) An emergency room and too many to count doctors’ visits later you wonder if life will ever return to normal? The answer is: after a couple months of physical therapy; hopefully, yes. Unfortunately, sometimes the unexpected happens. Or, in the vernacular: SHIT HAPPENS! I sincerely apologize for the delays in publishing the last of the May and June issues. I am honored that you entrust me with publishing your editorials, and I take that privilege very seriously, but right now SALYSÉ is just me, myself, and I, and “I” am in a lot of pain! Thank you for your patience and kindness as I work to slowly, but surely, catch up. Enjoy the June issues! Be well. Be kind. Be patient. As always, I hope you enjoy your escape! Hugs and Love, Sonya Alyse Lawyer SALYSÉ, Founder and Editor in Chief

Meet Hair Artist Indira Cristina García Matos Hometown: Maracaibo City, Zulia State, Venezuela. How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. I got started while I was still an art student collaborating with my best friend Alejandro @alejandro.arrias, (one of the photographers of this editorial), who was also still in college studying audiovisual communications. My very first styling days were helping him out in his experimental shoots while he was begining his photographic work. At first, I began doing both hair and makeup, and what started out just as a hobby helping a friend, quickly became my main focus. I never thought it would become my current main job and occupation, the best job yet, since I still get to do it mostly with my best friends and partners, combining a love for fashion, creativity and my artistic skills. Three adjectives to describe yourself. Neurotic, sensitive, and a bit weird. Hair Artist or Hair Stylist? Why? Hair Artist. I have never gone to a beauty school, taken a class or course on the subject, or worked in a salon. Almost everything I know is self-taught, discovered, investigated and self-practiced along the way, it took me lots of tryouts and errors, lots of patience and I have been very lucky. However, I did go to art school and graduated as a licensed Visual Artist and my career and profession helps me every day in my development as a Hair Artist or stylist. In addition, most of my experience and my line of work comes from fashion editorials.
Favorite color? Green in every shade. Favorite food/drink? Food: Almost everything Italian and Venezuelan, from sweet to salty. And sushi! Drink: Strawberry Juice. What do you enjoy the most about being a Hair Artist/ Stylist? I get to create something new every day and be a part of something grater as are amazing images and concepts while working amongst friends and lots of very talented people, and when it’s not a photoshoot but instead a social event, I enjoy making others feel beautiful on their most special days and moments. What do you not enjoy about being a Hair Artist/Stylist? Sometimes the schedules get a little long and hectic, and sometimes we get too tied up in the superficial aspects of life, but it just requires extra planning and a need and knowledge of how to find balance. Other than yourself, favorite hair artist/stylist? Why? Guido Palau, do to his amazingly creative works during Fashion Weeks, he is always reinventing styles that seemed forgotten. What person, living or dead, would you love to work with? Frida Kahlo What would you do? As a Hair Artist, I would love to do her hair for an editorial or one of her paintings, and as an Artist I’d Love to do her living portrait.
Speak it into existence, where do you see yourself in 5 years? I would love to be working in New York, Milan or Paris Fashion Week, and be the CEO of my own hair products and accessories company. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Living in peace and joy amongst family and friends but also having courage to take on new adventures while having someone by my side to share that life with. Also, probably retiring to live in Bali or Maui! Your zodiac sign? Aquarius. What zodiac sign do you get along with the most? Other Aquarians and Pisces. What’s your favorite quote? This is a hard one for me to answer I love so many! However, maybe definitely: “I don’t know anything with certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.” - Vincent van Gogh. Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? I would love to go to Egypt and take “The Tour of the Nile”. What’s your theme song? Another hard one, “Crazy” by Aerosmith and “Stellar” by Incubus. What hair trend do you love? Beach Waves! What hair trend do you wish would die a slow, painful death? Mullets definitely and forever.
What’s the best/worst gift you’ve ever given/received? Best gift received until now, the education and love my parents have given me throughout my life and the company of great friends. Worst received... Maybe an ugly T-shirt that an aunt gave me once. What product is in your kit that you can not live without? Paul Mitchell or Tresemmé Thermal Creations Heat Protectant Spray, Paul Mitchell Wax Works Texture Wax, and Rand & Co. Vicious Strong Hold Hairspray. Favorite movie? What Dreams May Come, 1998. Favorite actor/actress? Meryl Streep. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done? Leave my country. Last book you read? El Hombre que le tenía miedo al mar, by Abel Caballero. Guilty Pleasure? Sleeping all day. Last show you binge-watched? Game of Thrones. Anything else you want the readers to know about you. I will strive to keep creating and maintain the passion in my work and the very willto work. As a team, we feel very grateful for the opportunity of being published.
