Meet Model Alexis Sequoia Douglas Three adjectives to describe yourself. Tenacious, creative and unstoppable. What do you enjoy the most about modeling? The art, the traveling, the people. What do you not enjoy about modeling? The institutional racism that has been around since the beginning- it still affects us today. Favorite food? Depends on my mood. Your zodiac sign? Aquarius/Pisces cusp! What’s your favorite quote? “I don’t chase them, I replace them.” What designer would you love to model/ walk for? Why? I want to walk for The Blonds. Their pieces are everything I live for. If I could wake up everyday in their clothes, I would. But then again, I switch my style up completely based on my mood. Some days I can channel David Bowie and other days I can channel Diana Ross- it’s whatever. Your idea of “happiness” and/or your idea of “misery” My idea of pure happiness is living in a world where all living things can be free, happy and at peace. I believe happiness is a place where petty-mindedness can be overshadowed with living in the present and making the future an even better place for our children. Misery is a world where living creatures have the intent to harm others and excuse harm happening to others.
152 SALYSÉ OCT 2017
Guilty Pleasure? I love walking around my house in a silk robe and eating Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups and finishing a bottle of Chianti- it’s a rare occasion, but it is my favorite occasion. Last book you read? Black Wings of Cthulhu 4, edited by S.T. Joshi How would you describe your style of modeling? Free. I just move according to how I feel in the moment. I allow everything that I have experienced in my life to come through and express it in my body and face. I always try to connect with all of the artists involved with a project in order to bring the art to life. As a model I wear art, but I also complete the artists’ vision, thus, I am art. I don’t look up to anyone in particular to learn ‘how to model’ nor do I try and fit industry standards. I’m not standard, so why would I try to be like anyone else in the industry? Anything else you want the readers to know about you? Chef for 4.5 years of my life. Follow Alexis on Instagram @missalexissequoiadouglas

Meet Hair Artist Tasha Lyons aka Taja’Ly How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. I gained my cosmetology education my junior and senior year at Bladensburg High School under the leadership of the wonderful Ms. Lynne Holland. A year later I obtained my State of Marylanf Cosmetology license. I began working in salons part time until I decided to open my own salon, Taja’Ly Hair Studio, in 2009. From there, I’ve done numerous hair and fashion shows; publications in magazines and on the internet; and my work has been fearured on network television stations such as Food Network, local news and also Bravo’s Real Housewives of Potomac. Three adjectives to describe yourself. Creative, determined, and caring. Hair Artist or Hair Stylist? Why? Hair artist. I believe to achieve the many creations we do with hair is an artform and shouldn’t be taken lightly. There’s an art to what we do and it takes creativity to do it.
Speak it into existence. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? In 5 years I will be known across the world. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Perfect happiness is eating whatever you want and not gaining a single pound!! Lol Your zodiac sign? Scorpio What’s your favorite quote? I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. 1=Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? Bora Bora What’s your theme song? “I’m a Hustla” (just the chorus tho lol)
What do you enjoy the most about being a Hair Artist/ Stylist? My joy comes from seeing the reaction of my client’s face when they see the finished outcome. To bring confidence or added confidence to an individual puts a smile on my face and warms my heart. Because we all know, when your hair looks good, you feel good!!
What hair trend do you love? Soft waves and pin curls are so timeless! My favorite style hands down.
What do you not enjoy about being a Hair Artist/Stylist? Sore feet.

What’s the best/worst gift you’ve ever given/received? Best gift would be my yellow diamond ring from my husband on our 5 year anniversary.
Favorite actor/actress? Denzel Washington What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done? In life, raise kids. In my career, put on a hair show. Guilty Pleasure? Eating! Follow Tasha on Social Media IG: @tajaly @tajalyhairstudio

Meet Model Cheyenne Ellanah How did you get started modeling? Tell us about yourself. Earlier this year I was approached by a hair stylist to be their model in a show for Wella and Vogue magazine. I’ve always wanted to try modeling so I said of course! The ball has been rolling ever since. Three adjectives to describe yourself. Busy, talkative and determined What do you enjoy the most about modeling? I love how much confidence I’ve gained since I started modeling. We all have things we are insecure about and I’ve learned to be comfortable with my body as I learn how to pose. It’s really freeing. What do you not enjoy about modeling? Sometimes the shoots can be long and keeping that energy in each photo can be difficult. I once had a shoot that went until 1am. I’ve seen how easy it is to be taken advantage of so having a good circle is extremely important. What do you do when you are not modeling? I’ve recently started to get back into working out and trying yoga. I also have been interested in resin painting. I used to paint a lot when I was younger and I really miss it. I write poetry and can half play the ukulele. Favorite color? I’ve been obsessed with mustard/ marigold yellow lately. That color is magic. Favorite food? I love thai food. And pineapple on pizza. What is your favorite body part? My eyes. I have really big eyes. Growing up I was called a deer in 164 headlights or cow eyes. I love cows SALYSÉ so I didn’t mind. OCT 2017
What designer would you love to model/walk for? Why? Eli Saab. Or Paolo Sebastian. Both create pieces of absolute art. Their designs are so refreshing and mesmerizing. What’s your favorite quote? “I am learning every day to allow the space between where I am and where I want to be to inspire me and not terrify me.” -Tracee Ellis Ross Speak it into existence, where do you see yourself in 5 years? Successfully doing it all. Modeling is only one of my passions. As I grow I find I have other passions I’d like to pursue. In 5 years I won’t just be a model, I’ll be an international powerhouse. Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? I visited England earlier this year but I’d love to visit Thailand or Iceland. I actually have a list. There’s so many beautiful places. Your zodiac sign? I’m a Capricorn Sun, Taurus Moon. All Earth. Favorite superhero? Why? Phoenix aka Jean Grey. No matter how many times she’s killed, like a Phoenix she is reborn from the ashes. I’ve had to reinvent myself after certain hardships and each time I’m stronger than before. What person, living or dead, do you admire the most? Why? There so many people I admire but I’d say my mother hands down. She’s the strongest person I know but also the most vulnerable. She’s not perfect and she doesn’t pretend to be. I have learned so much from her and I just want to make her proud. What’s your theme song? Currently it’s been “Hard Times” by Paramore
Favorite movie? Moulin Rouge. I have so many movies I love but that one never gets old. Favorite actor/actress? I don’t actually have one. There are ones I admire like Angelina Jolie or Lupita Nyong’o. When I was younger I wanted to be the next Meryl Streep though. What is your idea of “happiness” and/or your idea of “misery”? I associate moods with colors a lot. Happiness is yellow. It’s bright and robust. It’s warm like the sun on breezy Saturday. It feels like your favorite sweater or making your favorite dish. Misery is grey. Some might say blue but blue has a calm energy that great lacks. Grey is cold. Misery loves company and doesn’t care about plans you might have. It’s very rude actually. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? Learn multiple languages. I’ve always wanted to be a polyglot. Guilty Pleasure? Dominoes cookie brownies and binge watching Bojack Horseman. Last show you binge-watched? Quantico. I’m still not caught up but it’s so good! Last book you read? I actually haven’t read a book in awhile. I have a list of books I want to read though. Anything else you want the readers to know about you? Im a walking encyclopedia of random facts from all the Cracked and Wikipedia articles I’ve read. Meet Makeup Artist
How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. I am from Washington, DC. I started off as a teen model. I still continued to model in college but eventually fell in love with working behind the scenes with makeup. My mom convinced me to take it seriously and to look into going to school for makeup artistry. After I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Architecture, I returned to DC and studied makeup artistry at the Bennett Career Institute in fall 2012. The rest is history! Three adjectives to describe yourself. Creative, Entrepreneur, Perfectionist. Favorite color? Purple, cerulean, and magenta Your zodiac sign? Aquarius What zodiac sign do you get along with the most? Good question. I do not know! I guess I should probably look into that; but, as a water sign I tend to get along with most people. What’s your theme song? “Me, Myself, and I” - Beyoncé
What do you enjoy the most about being a MUA? I really enjoy the creativity that comes with editorial shoots and the empowerment and beauty you get to provide to my brides and beauty clients. There is no greater feeling than knowing that you have the skills to enhance God’s creation. That is a major responsibility! What do you not enjoy about being a MUA? The early morning call times are not always my friend. I do not know too many people that like to set their alarm for anything earlier than 6:00 am but sometime the job calls for it! Speak it into existence, where do you see yourself in 5 years? In 5 years I see myself working in tv/ film, bridal, and fashion editorials. I would also love to have my own makeup studio here in DC with a team of makeup artists. I constantly think about creating my own cosmetic line or even branching out into being a beauty educator. I am still figuring the whole beauty educator thing out. Favorite food/drink? I like food too much to just name one thing! However, you cannot go wrong with Mexican.
Other than yourself, favorite make up artist? Why? Some of my favorite makeup artists are Mary Phillips, Renny Vasquez, Sam Fine, Nick Posey, and Carola Gonzalez. I greatly appreciate each of these artists approach to creating flawless, natural, fresh looks! A few new makeup artists that have been added to my list of favorite go-to makeup artists for inspiration is Julianne Kaye and Jill Powell. I have been obsessed with their work on Tia Mowry and Demi Lovato. When it comes to your avant-garde/ bold editorial looks I look up to Danessa Myricks and Pat McGrath. What’s your favorite quote? “God is within her. She will not fail…” Psalm 46:5 Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? I just recently got back from Nassau. Next on my list is Bali,a few cities in Thailand, or Greece. What is your idea of perfect happiness? I am still trying to figure this out. I am an analytical perfectionist. Achieving happiness is a constant battle in my world.
Monique Nicole
What person, living or dead, would you love to work with? I absolutely want to work with Dawn Richard one day!! I have been such a huge fan since Danity Kane. I have all of her solo work. I love her willingness to push the envelope in her photoshoots. She literally is a chameleon when it comes to her photoshoots. I also want to work with Janelle Monae’. I think she is gorgeous! From her black and white style to her creativity. What would you create? For Dawn Richard I would create a “no-makeup” makeup look on her. I love her facial structure. I really want to let those features stand on their own. My second look would be bold and colorful!! For Janelle Monae’ I would want to do my signature “natural glam” on her. I love soft natural glam looks on her. What make up trend do you love? If anyone were to check out my IG over the past few months, it is no secret I ABSOLUTELY ADORE a fresh, clean, glowing natural yet glam look!
What make up trend do you wish would die a slow, painful death? The overly contoured, cakey instagram makeup is a trend I wish would go away. What’s the best/worst gift you’ve ever given/received? I’ve been pretty lucky in the gift department. Let’s hope that continues. What product is in your kit that you can not live without? Right now my Kett translucent pressed setting powder, Mario Badescu Rose & Aloe Vera Water. I recently purchased several new products so I am excited to use them the next few months and see if the above list changes!! Favorite movie? Easily Save the Last Dance, Love & Basketball, and Boomerang. Favorite actor/actress? My go to list of actors/actresses that never disappoint are Kerry Washington, Taraji P. Henson, Viola Davis, Denzel Washington, Idris Elba, Will Smith, and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Last book you read? I am currently reading The Millionaire Real Estate Agent by Gary Keller. I’m reading this book in small increments so I will probably be working on this book for a little while. Plus, I am studying for the GRE. So my reading is being split between all of the GRE study books. Guilty Pleasure? Cookies!!!! Last show you binge-watched? TV One just recently did a marathon for my favorite TV of all time A Different World. I totally binge watched the marathon like I had never seen the show before. Anything else you want the readers to know about you. Do not be afraid of your greatness. That is my theme for 2017!! You will never know how successful you can actually be if you let fear deter you. Meet Hair Stylist Kanika Styles How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. Hair has always been a passion of mine. It’s been an interest since I was a small child. Any time anyone would let me play in their hair, I took advantage of the opportunity. I took a little detour from my dream and obtained a BS in Chemistry, and worked in the Biopharmaceutical industry. I found myself unfulfilled and realized that I had been running from my passion. As soon as my schedule and finances permitted, I attended cosmetology school at Paul Mitchell the School and have been doing what I love ever since! Three adjectives to describe yourself. Creative and free-spirited Quiet Goofy – in a good way Hair Artist or Hair Stylist? Why? I can appreciate both of these titles. They’re interchangeable, in my opinion. What do you enjoy the most about being a Hair Artist/ Stylist? I had a client cry in my chair and tell me that I made her feel beautiful, and that she hadn’t felt that way in a very long time. I love being able to make someone feel good about themselves. I equally love being challenged to create the unconventional. There’s nothing like taking a blank canvas and constructing art. What do you not enjoy about being a Hair Artist/Stylist? Right now, only that I’m not able to do it full time. Because it is my passion, I love doing it; however.
Your zodiac sign? Pisces What zodiac sign do you get along with the most? I’m a Pisces…we get along with everyone! Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? There are so many places on my list to visit. So hard to choose one!! But I would love to go to the Maldives and stay in one of the underwater hotels. What hair trend do you love? I love the resurgence of the incorporation of braids in hairstyles. What’s the best/worst gift you’ve ever given/received? I think the best gifts I’ve given were for Christmas a few years ago. I dabble in jewelry making, and my aunt gave me a bunch of my late grandmother’s jewelry that she came across while cleaning out her old bedroom. I made jewelry for everyone for Christmas, incorporating pieces from my grandmother’s old jewelry, so that everyone would have a piece of her with them when they wear it. Favorite movie? Coming to America Favorite actor/actress? Don Cheadle Last show you binge-watched? Sneaky Pete and Game of Thrones. I’m finally caught up! I CANNOT wait for the next season!
Favorite color? Green/teal Favorite food/drink? Pizza Speak it into existence, where do you see yourself in 5 years? In 5 years, I will be freelancing bicoastal, with a business based in the Washington, DC area. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Freedom to do what I please, when and where I please, and being surrounded by people I love.

Meet Model Vaquel Tyies How did you get started modeling? Tell us about yourself. I have always been really into fashion and the arts but never knew where I would fit in other than dance. I grew up on Tyra Banks and watching her evolve into success while, also enduring countless hours of ballet training. I always knew I wanted to be like her and Naomi Campbell but never had the confidence. People always said “ you look like a model” or “you should be a model.” At 17 I started looking at different photographers portfolios in the DMV that intrigued me and could possibly help me. From the time I had my first photoshoot it felt so natural like I had been modeling for some time and it gave me a feeling of warmth and security and from that moment I knew that’s what I wanted to do. Almost two years later I still get that feeling when I am behind the camera. Three adjectives to describe yourself Adventurous, caring, and positive. What do you enjoy the most about modeling? I enjoy the hair, the makeup, the wardrobe; becoming someones’ vision and seeing their face light up when they see that vision come to life. What do you not enjoy about modeling? I do not enjoy the stigma that you have to be signed in order to be an amazing model or to be taken seriously. Favorite color? Favorite color is lavender.
What designer would you love to model/walk for? Why? I would love to walk for Versace because the company is one of the few top fashion lines that has not discouraged black models. What photographer would you love to shoot with? Why? I would love to shoot with Steven Meisel. In July 2008 Vogue Italia featured only black models and Meisel took every picture. The issue made a statement and I have always wanted to shoot with him since then and the reasons that he had behind the issue. Speak it into existence. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? In five years I see myself living half way across the world, modeling in different campaigns and being the face of big name companies/ designers. Within that success I want to uplift people by teaching them about wellness of the mind and body to maintain a healthier and stable life. Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? I have been several places across the world and my absolute favorite would have to be Paris, France. Your zodiac sign? Gemini Favorite superhero? Why? Favorite superhero would have to be Batman because he is just a normal person with no real super powers but still wants to help everyone.
Favorite food? Favorite food would be steak.
What’s your favorite quote? “The world only exists in your eyes. You can make it as big or as small as you want.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Last show you binge-watched? The last show I binge watched had to be Game of Thrones.
What’s your theme song? Favorite theme song would have to be “Living Single.”
What person, living or dead, do you admire the most? Why? I admire Naomi Campbell because all throughout her career she has endured so much and has done so much and even at 47 she is still shaping the modeling industry for black models. She has spoken out about the racial bias in the fashion industry. She has also started many organizations and helped people that are less fortunate. She used her success to do good in the world not just modeling. What is your favorite body part? My favorite body part are my legs. What do you do when you are not modeling? When I’m not modeling I am most likely doing yoga or taking an adventure. Favorite movie? Favorite movie would have to be Alpha Dog. Favorite actor/actress? Favorite actress Gabrielle Union. What is your idea of “happiness” and/or your idea of “misery”? My idea of happiness is having the freedom to be yourself or do the things that you are passionate about without being scrutinized. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? I would love to learn how to fly a plane. Guilty Pleasure? Ice cream Last book you read? Last book I read Dark Matter by Blake Crouch Follow Vaquel on Social Media 181 IG: @vaquel__
