Meet Model Safiya Hendricksony How did you get started modelling? Tell us about yourself. I was asked by someone to model for them in a small show, nothing big, but once I did it I fell in love. That’s really when I was like “I need to be modeling!” Three adjectives to describe yourself. loud, different, and scattered What do you enjoy the most about modelling? When it comes to modeling I obviously LOVE the outfits and clothes and pampering but i really love slipping myself into a new character for every outfit I’m in. It’s like acting but only for an instant. That’s probably my favourite thing. What do you not enjoy about modelling? So far there’s nothing I don’t enjoy about it. Oh! No, that’s not true, I hate the pressure of always needing to be smaller. That’s BULLSHIT. What designer would you love to model/walk for? Why? I would love to walk for ANYONE creative, and paying of course. My favourite brands are brands that put creative, functional and technically challenging designs all in one. I’ve studied fashion so ya girl know what she’s talking about! But I guess an example would be J.W Anderson. I would love to study CHANEL, I don’t think they would have me walk for them but to learn the art and construction behind their garments would be a dream! there are so many photographers and I really don’t know any by name but there is a consistent style I typically like and it’s fun, visually captivating, and pretty crazy!

What is your favorite body part? My favourite body parts are definitely my hands. All my art comes from there. Painting, drawing, fashion design, sewing and tailoring. Without the I’m hopeless. What do you do when you are not modeling? When I’m not modeling, I’m tailoring and or drawing. Or texting my boyfriend hehe. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? I really want but also really NEED to learn Japanese. It’s a beautiful language, but also if I’m gonna go to that fashion school in japan I need to be fluent! Guilty Pleasure? Guilty pleasures aren’t a thing for me. Why feel guilty indulging in something that makes you feel good? Anything else you want the readers to know about you? I would and could say a whole bunch more about me but, that would be a frickin novel to read. So I’ll keep it short and just say I’m the mixed Caribbean and Slovenian bruh with crazy hair and a huge personality!

What photographer would you love to shoot with? Why? There are so many photographers and I really don’t know any by name but there is a consistent style I typically like and it’s fun, visually captivating, and pretty crazy! Speak it into existence, where do you see yourself in 5 years? I wasn’t gonna answer this one cuz I find it ridiculous but, ideally, I want to be modeling in Japan while I’m attending the Japanese fashion school called “Bunka” that would be dope. 17 SALYSÉ NOV 2017

Meet Photographer Allison Taylor How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. I was fascinated by the idea of being able to capture a moment in time from a pretty young age. When I was about ten or eleven years old I saved up my Christmas, babysitting, and birthday money to buy myself the nicest point-and-shoot digital camera I could find. I had my girlfriends model for (and with, of course) me when we were in school and maintained a ‘hobbyist’ status until I started assisting and second shooting weddings in 2012. It’s been an interesting and winding road since then, but here we are! Several cameras, continents, and an ever changing business plan later!

If you could have personally witnessed anything, what would you want to have seen? First thing that comes to mind is the “I have a dream” speech. Last book you read? The Sun Also Rises - Hemingway Anything else you want the readers to know about you. I’d like to point out that some of these answers have been serious, and others, not so much. I’d like to think it’s obvious which is which, but you never know haha.

Three adjectives to describe yourself. Hilarious. Amazing. Modest. What do you enjoy the most about photography? Seeing things from a different perspective. What person, living or dead, would you love to photograph? Oh. I’ve never really thought about it but, off the top of my head, Beyoncé. We’d have a fab time and create some fierce images. Sasha Fierce. What country would you love to shoot in? I can’t imagine anything besting Bali, but I’ve yet to shoot in France. Paris is a bucket list shoot, for sure. Your zodiac sign? Pisces, if you’re into that kind of thing. Dream vacation you would like to take (or have taken)? Again, Bali. What’s your theme song? “Sex With Me” - Rihanna (Thank you iTunes shuffle, I’m flattered and somewhat confused) Favorite superhero? Why? Superman. Primarily because he’s the best, and the argument that him having all the superpowers being a reason not to like him is why he’s the best - also, because I’m basic. What was the last picture you took with your phone? Sunset silhouette of an ocean water hair flip in Cancun. (It turned out kind of like a Pinterest fail, in case you were wondering.)

Meet Makeup Artist Aidan Beach How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. I got started by watching Youtube tutorials and just experimenting with makeup looks on myself and then once I got comfortable doing that, I started doing makeup on my friends for fun. For my senior project in high school we had to pick an interest of ours to do a project on for the year and I picked makeup. After pushing myself to do it more and more not only for my project but because I loved doing it so much, I decided it would be a good career that I would genuinely enjoy.

Last book you read? Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur Guilty Pleasure? Ben and Jerry Late Night Dough ice cream and Netflix. Last show you binge-watched? Friends (for the 3rd time)

What do you enjoy the most about being a MUA? The ability to be creative and make people feel more confident. What do you not enjoy about being a MUA? Its very competitive in Vancouver (BC, Canada)

Follow Aidan on Social Media IG: @aidanbeachmua

Other than yourself, favorite make up artist? Why? Alex Box because she is crazy talented, creative and is constantly pushing boundaries for what others perceive as beautiful in the makeup industry. Favorite food/drink? Ramen noodles! What is your idea of perfect happiness? Being content with where you are in life, not wishing to be someone or somewhere else. Your zodiac sign? Libra What zodiac sign do you get along with the most? Sagittarius What make up trend do you love? Natural, wispy eyebrows and natural skin. What make up trend do you wish would die a slow, painful death? Instagram eyebrows. What’s the best/worst gift you’ve ever given/received? Best gift was receiving a Ukulele from my mom for my 20th Birthday What product is in your kit that you can not live without? Mac fix plus all the way. Favorite movie? Forest Gump Favorite actor/actress? Jake Gyllenhaal

Meet Fashion Designer Casey Lamb How did you get started? Tell us a little about yourself. I got started with KSLAM, through printing my art on graphic tees. From there it escalated towards denim. The first denim collection I put out was in November 2016, so almost a year ago! Since then I have just been working more closely with denim, and seeing how I can maximize repurposing it. Three adjectives to describe yourself. The three adjectives I would use to describe myself is genuine, creative, and empathetic. Favorite designer other than yourself? Why? My favorite designer, at the moment would have to be Donatella Versace, because of her newest collection. She recently brought back vintage Versace, which is some of my all-time favorites, in terms of design, production and fabric. A new brand out of New York and Berlin called Namilia is another one of my favorites as well. Their approach to fashion is completely outside of the box, and it inspires me to do the same. What person, living or dead, would you love to create a design for? What would you create? If I could create a design for anyone, it would probably have to Julia Roberts back in the day, when she first started her career. I would probably create a super badass suit, that accentuates large shoulders and her slim waist.

What fashion trend do you wish would die a slow, painful death? The one fashion trend I want to die is leggings. People are going to come for me for saying this, but… they are not pants. Last book you read? The last book I read is How to be a Bad Ass by Jen Sincero. I have expressed my love for this book to those close to me, but it’s a must read! For anyone that is struggling with aspects of confidence, obstacles or anything that is holding them back from living their best life, NEEDS to read this. Anything else you want the readers to know about you. Keep an eye on KSLAM because I am just getting started.

Speak it into existence, where do you see yourself in 5 years? In 5 years, I hope to see myself designing for celebrities personally. Right now, my stuff is made to fit, and I want to keep that going. Hopefully I will be living in a place like LA or New York that has more of a fashion hub. Your zodiac sign? My zodiac sign is Pisces, and it fits me so perfectly. What fashion trend do you love? My favorite fashion trend is pant suits. Any woman can rock a power suit, and I honestly think nothing is sexier.

‘The process’,

as it’s often called, can be one of the most exhausting, exciting, challenging, and joyous of ventures - ask any creative. That beautiful end-vision can seem so close and yet unattainable all at once - add being a young newcomer to the industry and you have what could be the most rewarding struggle of your life to date. The people who take this knowledge and run with it, those are the artists I seek out. The culmination of hours, days, weeks, and months being a photograph I was able to capture can be the most gratifying and worthwhile of pursuits. Appreciating each aspect of an image and how it came to be is arguably the most important part of the process. Fashion has always drawn model Safiya, she was and is very passionate about the actual garment and fashion construction of the fashion industry, but actually fell into modelling by chance. With plans to continue modelling, she hopes to move into fashion designing. Fashion designing becoming the main focus over modelling while still, at the end of the day [for Safiya], one does not exist without the other. Each article of clothing she wears both in her day to day life as well as in modelling is chosen with care and purpose. Safiya is pictured wearing almost exclusively KSLAM clothing. KSLAM started as a way to showcase Casey’s (designer) art. With a self-made stencil, she hand painted the first pair of jeans - with no intention of selling them. They were a hit. Shortly after, Casey put out her “Cat Call” denim collection. The first “Cat Call” collection was released in limited quantities, and sold out in a day. Paired with the vintage reworked denim are accessories by Standout Boutique. Standout is a vision to bring you unique jewelry pieces with a fresh perspective on style from many different cultures. Each piece is designed and quality handmade with Parisa’s (Standout Boutique’s designer) inspiration for her jewelry creation coming from her own personal travels around the world, living in and experiencing different cultures, being a mother and all of her surroundings. Safiya’s makeup look was created with a relaxed Fall feeling in mind. Each tone and texture specifically chosen to catch light and enhance her rich brown eyes as well as tie together each look as a whole. Rounding out a team of talents to watch in the industry, makeup artist Aidan Beach.
