ALPINE SAFETY

ALPINE SAFETY

THE BEST TIPS FOR SAFE ENJOYMENT ON AND OFF THE SLOPES

In order to avoid serious injuries, always bear in mind when you are out on the piste that skiing is supposed to be fun! If you overestimate your abilities and set the bar too high for yourself, you increase your risk of injury. Experts recommend taking regular breaks to prevent overexertion and pushing yourself too far. If you don’t feel physically up to the task anymore, it’s time to quit for the day.

ALPINE SAFETY

Whether carving, alpine skiing or snowboarding – a ski helmet should be absolutely automatic for every winter sports fan. Consuming large amounts of alcohol has no place in skiing. Many accidents occur between 3 and 6 in the afternoon, when slopes are often already being groomed for the next day. For their own safety, skiers should no longer be out on the pistes by this time of day. Tour preparation The same goes for our deep-snow hills: reducing risk doesn’t begin when you leave the secure ski areas, it begins at home. Read up on the latest avalanche threat conditions (for example at www.alpin.salzburg.at). What would be a responsible choice today, and what would not? Select the right route for an enjoyable tour. Ask locals who already know the route well. And take a close look at the map. Essential emergency equipment Always take emergency equipment with you – consisting of an avalanche transceiver, a shovel, an avalanche probe, and firstaid equipment including a bivouac sack and mobile radio. Many freeriders don’t set out without a so-called avalanche airbag, also called an ABS pack. This is a re-usable rescue device that increases the probability of survival for people caught in an avalanche. Only those who are well-equipped and have knowledge of the area and avalanche conditions should leave secured slopes. Safety equipment and knowledge about its use are a must. Appropriate equipment and materials can be rented in the sports stores and ski schools.

FIS RULES OF THE SLOPES 1. Respect for others A skier or snowboarder must behave in such a way that he does not endanger or prejudice others.

7. Climbing and descending on foot A skier or snowboarder either climbing or descending on foot must keep to the side of the ski run.

2. Control of speed and skiing or snowboarding A skier or snowboarder must move in control. He must adapt his speed and manner of skiing or snowboarding to his personal ability and to the prevailing conditions of terrain, snow and weather as well as to the density of traffic.

8. Obey signs and markings A skier or snowboarder must respect all signs and markings.

3. Choice of route A skier or snowboarder approaching from behind must choose his route in such a way that he does not endanger skiers or snowboarders ahead. 4. Overtaking A skier or snowboarder may overtake another skier or snowboarder above or below and to the right or to the left provided that he leaves enough space for the overtaken skier or snowboarder to make any voluntary or involuntary movement. 5. Entering, starting and moving upwards A skier or snowboarder entering a marked run, starting again after stopping or moving upwards on the slopes must look up and down the slopes to make sure he can do so without endangering himself or others. 6. Stopping on the ski run Unless absolutely necessary, a skier or snowboarder must avoid stopping on the ski run in narrow places or where visibility is restricted. After a fall in such a place, a skier or snowboarder must move clear of the ski run as soon as possible.

9. Assistance In the case of an accident, every skier or snowboarder is obligated to assist. 10. Identification Every skier or snowboarder and witness, whether involved in the incident or not, must exchange names and addresses following an accident.
