In this course you are going to learn how to listen more accurately. Listening correctly will also help you to speak fluently because you will not waste time trying to find out what the other person is actually saying. Just to remind you : Below is a list of the consonants and vowels. They will be used often in this listening section.
In this first lesson, we are going to look at words that are important in sentences. They are called key words (or stressed words). These words are pronounced more strongly than other words because they are important to the sentence. 1. First read this conversation below without stressing any words. How does it sound to you? 2. Then, read it again with stress on words that you think are important or that make the conversation sound natural. Mark the words that you think should be stressed. T 2

Where are you? Christie: At the cafeteria. Yew Min: OK, I’m coming right now. 4. What is the difference between your reading in No 1 and the recording? How does adding stress make a difference to the sentence?

1.
Listen to the recording and underline the points on listening that you have learned in this book. The six points are stress in sentences and words, linked sounds, the schwa, mixed sounds, dropped sounds and helping sounds. Circle the words or parts of words that are stressed.
Now that you have learned the keys to better listening, you can use them more and more to improve your listening skills. The more you practice them the better you’ll get at using them. When you are watching a movie, see if you can ‘catch’ these six points in the conversations that you hear in it. You might not be able to speak like a native speaker who uses all these six points but you can be confident that you are hearing the right way. Don’t be content with your level now but keep on learning and practicing until the content of your spoken English surprises even you! 2.
