OL I V E WOOD T IES COURSE: GRADUATE PROJECT INDIVIDUAL WORK SUPERVISOR: FIONN BYRNE 2022-2023 VIEW THE FULL THESIS REPORT HERE Past and present peace negotiations have failed to propel Israelis and Palestinians to coexistence and liberation. Physical barriers to peace, such as the nearly 800-kilometre separation barrier, erode possibilities for interaction and human connection. This academic endeavour challenges the myth that peace and war are binary and cannot exist simultaneously. Upon the acceptance that the consequences of war are sociocultural and spatial, we can begin navigating a spatial strategy for peacebuilding. Both groups share a deep-rooted love and respect for the land they call home or dream of one day returning to. Because of this, these communities have enmeshed realities, and their futures are both tied to each other and the land. Olivewood Ties investigates how landscape can be a peacebuilding mechanism in the divided context of Israel/Palestine. Presently and historically, trees in Israel/Palestine were proxy soldiers, employed in warfighting, land acquisition, and nation-building. If trees and flora were instead proxy peacebuilders, what implications do different landscape design strategies possess and moreover, what opportunities do they offer as a mechanism toward healing and unity?

TO G E THER T HYME COURSE: ARCH 520 - VERTICAL STUDIO INDIVIDUAL PROJECT INSTRUCTOR: GOLI JALALI 2022

Public spaces across the globe are palimpsests of stories, relationships, and cultures. Our inhabitation of public space is shaped by its surrounding context, political control or influence, and our sense of community. One thing that remains constant across public spaces is that they are not neutral. Certain communities and cultures are celebrated in public space, while others are concealed. Is neutral space possible? Can we offer a safe space for self-facilitated cross-cultural celebrations and intimate human connections? The studio brief asked us to select a carpet from our culture as a starting point for design PROGRAM exploration. Later, we would re-imagine the carpet as physical space and create a ‘carpet drawing’ to express the new site and design.

Chosen carpet: Oversized Jerusalem Bezalel Rug 20th c.; 15’ 9” x 17’ 10” (4.8 x 5.44 m) From Nazmiyal Collection, New York

THE MAGIC CARPET

Program drawing.

Program diagram: grow, harvest, prepare, perform rituals, pray, eat

The spaces will use the carpet’s patterning and geometry to organize areas dedicated to different processes and rituals in preparing and eating food. These areas will not be grouped by ritual or preparation step. These spaces will be numerous, small intimate enclosures dispersed throughout the site, allowing visitors to adapt the space to their needs and find human interaction. Division will not be reinforced. The spaces will be small enough to host a meal between just a few people, with larger spaces for cultural celebrations and large meals. The spatial relationships will pull from the different iconography and colours in the carpet overlayed with the saturation information. Foucault’s description of heterotopias can be expressed as a set of principles relating to worlds within worlds. They are distinguishable from normal spaces but mirror them at the same time. In other words, they are spaces in which new, otherworldly rules apply, but they are still influenced by real-world societal workings. This program imagines ordinary food practices, daily rituals, and cultural celebrations taking place, but in a space dictated, yet not dictated, by the jurisdiction of its surrounding context. Additionally, these practices are scattered, non-linear scrambles of different cultures and rituals all in the same space.

Site context for carpet drawing.

14

// SAMANTHA MILLER

This carpet was created in the early 20th century by Jewish folks who had recently immigrated to British-controlled Palestine. They came to a place controlled by the British, which is now a place of nonexistent political neutrality. The British’s divide and conquer strategy kick-started a century of division. By separating ethnic/ religious governing, they could gratify different sides at different times and to all sides against each other, making them ‘neutral’ and in control.

Left: Final carpet drawing of designed space based off of the chosen carpet. Entry to the space is through a new gate in the old city walls, with a hidden ceremonial bath to cleanse oneself before entering. Right: Accompanying perspective showing juxtaposition between carpet space and outside space.

Casted model of staircase and hidden space for a cleansing bath inside the wall before entering the space (based off of Foucault’s theory of Heterotopia).

This re-design proposal for East Park explores the concept of immersive edges and landscape as infrastructure. By blurring the line between land and water, Floodwaters Park aims to provide an adaptive coastal and stormwater infrastructure that maintains its position as a central hub within the public sphere

A N TI -A N T I- SOCIAL G ARD EN COURSE: LARC 502 - STUDIO 2 INDIVIDUAL PROJECT INSTRUCTORS: DANIEL ROHR & STEPHANIE BRACONNIER 2021

Each year that passes, this 120+ year old community struggles even more to engage its residents and foster a sense of community. The issue of loneliness is ever-present in more rural communities like the community of Mount Lehman, and is an increasingly prevalent health concern in 2021. The Anti-Anti-Social Garden brings folks of all ages together over wine and play to encourage togetherness, whether that be larger community gatherings or simply being alone together.

Process plans, sections, and sketches.

M I SSI N G T EM POR ALITIES COURSE: LARC502 - STUDIO 2 COLLABORATION: CALEB VAN DER LEEK INSTRUCTORS: DANIEL ROHR & STEPHANIE BRACONNIER 2021

Missing temporalities was a mission to explore how we can provide pockets of joy and temporal experiences to residents and visitors, regardless of any of the factors that divide us. Experiences with water are an innate need, and something that unites all people. Inclusivity means that no one should feel there are exceptions of use targeted at them, and everyone should be able to explore the same unique experiences at every level.

HO G A N’S ALLEY SITE G UID ELIN ES COURSE: LARC504 - VERTICAL STUDIO COLLABORATION: NICOLE DULONG & REECE MILTON INSTRUCTORS: DIVINE NDEMEYE, SIERRA TASI BAKER, & JB TAYLOR 2021 VIEW THE BOOKLET HERE This report seeks to address the direct wants and needs of the community. It is a graduate level attempt at subversion, or a bottom up approach, where the desires of the community are considered far above the bottom line. Guidelines provide direction to, and support for, systematic change while leaving room for community input. It places emphasis on Black and Indigenous geographic centrality, healing, spaces of social connection, oral history, resilient nature, and land sovereignty. We recognize that Hogan’s alley exists within a greater socio-economic urban culture and that this process could be applied to similar scenarios.
