Ceres MAC Fly-in 30 October to 1 November 2020

A bird’s-eye view of the CMAC surroundings, by Stellenbosch Model Aircraft Academy Craig Neethling’s 1/4 scale Swift glider; 3,75m wing span,

The weatherman predicted a weak cold front brushing past the Western Cape by Wednesday. So, on Thursday morning the first thing I checked in Ceres was the weather. The forecast was not favourable … intermittent rain with a stiff north westerly wind gusting at times… not your ideal flying weather. When Charles and Riaan from Hermanus, and André from Mossel Bay arrived early on Thursday to set up camp, I knew it was…”Smoke On!”. With pilots arriving from Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Somerset West, Simonstown and Worcester, the action just got more exciting by the minute. The national lockdown restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic had a major impact on RC flying activities. Therefore it was really encouraging to see so many pilots turning up for our Fly-in weekend.

All with renewed enthusiasm and energy. Young pilots like Matthew Going and Stuart Kitshoff from Helderberg Radio Flyers gave a superb performance of RC airmanship, showing that the RC sport has some extraordinary talent in the younger age group. Something that we all need to support and encourage. Well done and thank you to everyone who shared a wonderful flying and camping weekend with us at Ceres. “Ons sal dit weer moet doen...”

The GAA Championship was held at Henley instead of Barnstormers, as this event coincided with the Power Nationals hosted by SAMAA. MAASA decided that it would not participate in the NATS, due to the consequences of Covid-19. The Cape Town pilots and judges could not travel and participate due to these circumstances. The GAA wishes to thank the management of Henley for the well-groomed and clean facilities, as well as SAMAA for hosting the day. Thank you to Oom Danie Potgieter for performing the duties of Contest Director - getting the flow of contestants and judges at the right place, at the right time. Thanks to all the pilots who pitched in as judges and helped to prepare the flight line by putting up the flags. Thank you Chris for organising of the flight and judges rosters, collating the scores, and arranged for the trophies. It was an early 4am start to the day in order to be at the contest site at 6 am to assist with the flight line preparations. The sun just rose over the horizon as we pulled into the venue, after an hour's drive from home. Everybody had to pitch in to ready the field before flying could commence at 7:00. The flight line was prepared by rolling out the lines to mark out the box position and putting out the flags. Grant used his trusty drone with great effect to help to position the flags. Pilots briefing was at 6:45. Each class had to fly 4 rounds, with 5 pilots in Sportsman class, 3 pilots in Advanced class, 3 pilots in Masters class and 4 pilots in F3A class. Sixty flights had to be completed before sunset, which meant approximately 10 hours of continuous flying. Chris was proactive to do the draw a few days beforehand, in order to set up the roster, saving precious time. The draw was able to be witnessed by video link. Oom Daan as per usual, performed the duty of Contest Director, getting everybody on the line on time, and he made the whole event run like clockwork. This was a challenge, as there were Large Scale, Pylon, and Jet flights that ran concurrently, with some pilots participating in these events as well. The LOMAC guys, Barry, Sarel, and Alec, as well as Roland and Burt, had to move with great enthusiasm and energy between the northern and southern flight lines in order to participate in all their disciplines. All judging was done by pilot judges, so there was not too much time to relax and lounge around. The skies were clear, but the wind started to pick up from 8:00 and was gusty and got stronger through the day. This was quite a factor in the event, adding to the challenge for the pilots and taxing on the batteries of the aircraft. In the Sportsman class there was quite a fierce competition. The guys from LOMAC really enjoyed the day with very stiff competition amongst themselves. Barry, Sarel, and André jockeyed for 1st position. André's 3rd round win of 68.64% and 1097 normalised points, helped him to secure 1st place. The second place was a draw between Sarel and Barry on normalised points, but was awarded to Barry due to the higher average that he had achieved. SAMAA News Issue 4 of 2020 - Page 4

JSM Xcalibur Christo Barkhuizen. How is this for a well-planned and executed photo!

Johan Powell is delighted with his first place win in the 2020 Aerial Concepts Nationals, Jet Basic class.

Roland Suhrmüller flew this Aero L-39 with great skill to take first place in the F3S Jet Aerobatic class at the 2020 Aerial Concepts Nationals.

This report covers the activities of the Jet aerobatic class at the 2020 Aerial Concepts SAMAA Power Nationals. Competition flying is feared by many and is not always the chosen pasttime of RC Jet modellers. This year proved somewhat different for some. The decision to host the 2020 Nationals was taken quite late after the lockdown was lifted, which gave many of the pilots little if any chance to prepare for the championship. Some fifteen pilots entered for the competition, with SAMJA having made the decision to host both the Basic and F3S classes. The entries were surprising as well as encouragement for the organisers, since the entry and attendance at the past competitions were a lot lower, and considering the late announcement of the competition. The weekend finally arrived and the battle amongst the Basic class became evidently fierce. For pilots who decided to enter at late notice and the amount of practice that was had considering the poor flying conditions leading up to the competition, the judges and fellow pilots were in total amazement about the excellent flying demonstrated by Davon Lampbrecht and Johan Powell. These pilots took second and first places respectively, with Jaco Henn being placed third. Whilst the competition was fierce, the top two competitors mentioned afterwards that the process ended up being a lot of fun. They both said that flying the discipline of a routine or the sequence, gave them an opportunity to develop confidence, and the confidence helped them to develop the platform to try manoeuvres they would ordinarily not have ventured. This then in turn created for them a platform for more fun and a safer flying routine. Once again, well done to JOhan and Davon and all the pilots who dared the entry to the basic class.

Davon Lambrecht ventured into competition for the first time, placing second in the Basic Sport Jet class with this CARF Mephisto V2.

Jaco Henn has certainly developed into a fine fixed-wing competitor, flying this Avanti S to third place in the Basic Sport Jet class. AvantiS is EDF-powered.

Dean Grobbelaar’s Ultra Lighting taking-off for it’s ill-fated flight. Jet flamed out a few seconds after this, and Dean had to turn downwind, losing sight of the jet. Quick thinking had Danie Potgieter shout basic commands, to bring the Lightning down, but it sustained damage.

The recovery crew rushed to the scene. Ultra Lightning sustained damage to undersurfaces, and fuselage sustained a serious crease aft of the wing.

Where my pants?

The competition started early on the morning of the 24th September with pilots briefing. The Sportsman guys started flying their known round 1 followed by the Basic class. A big thank you also to the Basic pilots who entered into the Nationals, as the level of flying was very good. With their entries (10) they boosted the LSA family to have the highest entry out of all the other SIG's at the Nationals, so well done! And we look forward to having you out next regional and national competitions. Day 2 was similar with most of the pilots flying their 2nd and 3rd rounds. Friday afternoon was action time as the Freestyle kicked-off. Well done to the pilots who flew the Freestyle and entertained the spectators. Saturday morning was tense as the Unknown rounds had to be flown. Basically you get given an Unknown schedule to fly 12 hours before you have to fly it. You cannot practice it but you can memorize the sequence and rely on your caller to help you get through it. Well done to the Intermediate, Advanced, and Unlimited pilots for getting through it. Results: Basic: Alec Groenewald won the Basic class. There were 10 pilots in Basic. The winning order was: (1) Alec Groenewald, (2) Marnu Bothma, (3) Pieter Herbst, (4) Sarel Venter, (5) Leon Palm, (6) Jaco Henn, (7) Charl Jooste, (8) Juandre van der Schaar, (9) Gerrit van Deventer and (10) Geoff Dale. Donovan Willcox and Russell van der Westhuizen giving it all they’ve got, for Trevor Budd and Wayne Willcox.

Thursday the 24th of September 2020, fresh out of lockdown and eager to get racing again, our pilots made their way to the south of Johannesburg to compete in the now dubbed “Mini-Nats” held at Henley Model Airfield. The event was scheduled to run over four days, with nine heats for each class scheduled. The course was set, the weather was calm, and the pilots prepared. It was time, time to go fast, and turn left. Day one, Q40/F3T Racing conditions was perfect, with calm conditions that would suit any pilot or discipline and the results speak for themselves. A new South African Record was recorded and awarded to none other than Wayne Willcox, a magnificent achievement with a time of 65,23 Seconds beating the previous record also held by Wayne by over three seconds. Well-done Sir, the hard work, blood, sweat and tears has paid off. Wayne was also the overall winner of the Q40/F3T class with a total time of 474.81 Seconds. 2nd place was awarded to Jonathan Willcox, with a total time of 504.48 Seconds. This Father-Son Duo is a force to be reckon with when it comes to race day and will for many years to come. 3rd place was awarded to Eben Muller with a total time of 507.49. Day two, Hot Quickies (F3R) If we had the perfect weather the 1st day of the Nats, we definitely had the total opposite on day two. With seriously strong winds, gusts, and cross winds to contend with, our pilots had their work cut out for them. In the end there had to be a winner, and not only a winner, but another South African Record. Congratulations Johnathan Willcox flying an amazing round of 74,31 Seconds, not only the new SA Record but the overall winner too, finishing with a total time of 546,15 Seconds, followed closely by 2nd place pilot Eben Muller who flew a total time of 564.,2. Third place is awarded to Patrick O' Donovan with a total time of 598,71. Well done guys, conditions were not easy, yet you pulled it off and performed when you needed it most. Day three, Standard Quickies A change of scenery. On day three our pilots were treated to a change of scenery, having the opportunity to fly on the main flight line at Henley Model Airfield. The same strength of wind was in the air again, however this time our pilots were positioned in such a way that they can face the winds head on! With over 12 pilots competing in this class the racing scene was set for an eventful and fun day. With 3 groups of four pilots each, the racing was packed full of action, close calls, high speed, and close encounters with the balsa gods. All in all, the racing was very close, and the calculators had to come out to determine the winners.

1st place was awarded to Roland Suhrmuller who flew an amazing 637,15 seconds in total. 2nd place went to Patrick O' Donovan with total time 648,86 Seconds, followed in 3rd place with a total time of 655,11 Seconds, Eben Muller. Congratulations guys, we sure enjoyed the racing and the crowds too. Day four, Sportsman Class Day four, the final day of a wonderful nationals it was now time for the Sportsman Class to show the rest what they are made of. Having had the opportunity to witness the other classes as they compete, these Pilots now had the knowledge and tools at their disposal to overcome the fear, jitters and shakes and put in the times when they needed to. Eight Pilots overall made for exciting close racing with Pilots taking to the sky during each round. The hussle for position over each other went down to the final rounds and eventually a winner was declared. 1st place was awarded to Sarel Venter with a total time of 910,85 seconds, 2nd place pilot was Christopher Parker 1st time flyer and for sure not the last time we will see the likes of this young man, Christopher flew a total time of 989,19 Seconds. 3rd place was awarded to Stuart Kirby who narrowly missed 2nd place and flew a 993,58. Well Done to all the pilots, conditions were not ideal, however you have shown that it is possible. All in all, the Nationals was a great success, with loads of pilots competing and enjoying our lovely sport. A special thanks to all our Judges, Timekeepers, and the event organizers without you we would not have had such a great time. We would also like to thank SAMAA, and Henley Radio Flyers for organizing and hosting a great event. Here is to hoping we can overcome this epidemic and return to normal times. Where we as South African Model Pilots can enjoy the wonderful weather to practice our favourite outdoor hobbies. Thank you, and as always, Go Fast, Turn Left

Large Scale Aerobatics News

Justin Gomersall

All the pilots who participated in the National Championships.

As one of the leading Special Interest Groups of the SAMAA, Large Scale Aerobatics has grown from strength to strength, even though 2020 proved to have it's challenges, with COVID-19 lockdown, and al;l SAMAA clubs being closed. The current LSA Gauteng committee ralliedup the members, both new and old, and managed to pull-off a very successful LSA Extravaganza in February. Pilots managed to attend, arriving from as far as Nelspruit and Secunda, in order to make the event a success, and it was well attended. After the lockdown restrictions were lifted, LSA managed to have a Gauteng Regional competition at RMAC in August, for pilots and organisers to prepare for the upcoming Combined Power Nationals at the end of September. This regional event was also well attended, and the pilots flew very well, despite some strong August winds, and with the added pressure on to fly well, with the Nationals looming. Sponsorships LSA Gauteng is very fortunate to have a sponsor come on board to help uplift the activities of the SIG. We would like to thank very much Geoff Dale from Snaproll Aeromodels, along with 3W, for sponsoring LSA. Geoff has not only brought along a superb product, prizes, and service, but his knowledge of the hobby in general, and with 3W motors is greatly appreciated. We look forward to a long and prosperous relationship with Geoff going forward. For more information, please visit Geoff Dale and his company Snaproll Aeromodels on: http://www.snaproll.co.za/ and on his Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/3wmotorssouthafrica . The remainder of 2020: LSA Gauteng will be having their last regional competition at Barnstormers, on Sunday the 29th November. The morning will be a competition, and afternoon prize giving for the League and year-end function, consisting of a braai lunch. A big thank you to all the LSA guys that attendee and competed during a difficult and disrupted year. We look forward to a even better 2021. SAMPE and RC Skydiving Part 2

Last month we started by saying hello to radio-controlled Skydiving! We tend to become ďŹ xated on ďŹ xed-wing and rotating wing models, and perhaps do not notice this exciting branch of our hobby and sport. This information piece continues to give SAMAA members a bit of insight into the marvellous world of model skydiving, how it is practiced, managed, and being developed in South Africa. Worldwide activity is increasing, and with the right guidance, this may become another of the international competitive disciplines in the FAI/CIAM house.

SAMAA News Issue 4 of 2020 - Page 16

SAMPE: Drop pilot rating test - Pre-requisites: Drop Plane Pilot Proficiency conversion to be considered in the following cases: 1. To be considered for a drop plane pilot proficiency, the pilot should have at least have 3 months consecutive flying experience in the level of a SAMAA Fixed Wing SILVER proficiency to be able to be tested as a drop plane pilot. 2. To fly as drop pilot at any SAMAA standard airshow, display, demonstration, or exhibition, the pilot should have at least 3 months consecutive flying experience in the level of a SAMAA Fixed-wing GOLD Proficiency, and have the Drop Plane Pilot Proficiency rating.

The SAMAA Activity Calendar There is still a considerable amount of uncertainty, locally and internationally, regarding the stupid Corona virus pandemic, and how it will affect our aeromodelling activities in the country. All international championships were cancelled this year, since travel was not possible. Organisers of 2021 international events are waiting with baited breath, to see what the new year may bring, and if there will be any respite. The CIAM and the FAI are monitoring the situation carefully. Clubs and club administrators, and the SAMAAs Special Interest Groups ought to plan their activities for the year, and to forward these details to the SAMAA office for publication. Clubs are requested to strictly apply and adhere to the usual COVID-19 precautions: social distancing, limited numbers, face masks, sanitising, etc. Fly-ins and other gatherings are allowed, but common sense must in all cases prevail. So, plan your events with care, and get the dates and details to Linda for publication on the website, and in SAMAA News. The events below are mostly competition-connected, but there are other events of a general nature planned as well. Support these events...they are staged for your enjoyment! Everyone in the country is hoping that the current infection rate will be effectively contained, so that it will not be necessary to re-introduce and impose draconian measures on the population. We can all remember (and try to forget!) the frustrating time from April to July when all our clubs were closed, to supposedly retard and contain the spread of COVID-19. Telephone

Blast from the past! In the last few weeks, there were several contributions, showing personalities who were at the leading edge of shaping South African aeromodelling. Many of them were competitively-inclined, and their skills and experience were passed on to a younger generation. Model aircraft activities in the 1930's was mostly with smallish free flight rubber-powered models and gliders, and just before the war, model petrol engines were developed for use in model aircraft. But the war put an end to most aeromodelling, and especially petrolengined model aircraft activity was prohibited, unless you were drafted to fly target drones! After the war, there was a lot of surplus war material that could be appropriated for modelling, and also, Jim Walker is credited with the advent of control line flying, U-Control as it is often referred to. Progress was rapid and in the late 1940's, serious experiments with radio control were undertaken in the USA, and Europe. South African enthusiasts were naturally lagging behind a bit since most materials had to be imported, and were dispatched by mail ship, rather than the express delivery that we find today. Radio control experiments started in 1946, and by 1948, exponents like Chips Wannenburg used Good Brothers RC equipment in a Walt Good

Rudderbug. (see photo). By 1950, the first RC Nationals was staged, somewhere near Johannesburg, with winner being Cliff Culverwell, second place by Chips Wannenburg, and Les Morison third. Radio Control was now firmly on the map, but progress was slow, and equipment expensive, and success was not always guaranteed! In 1956 Monte Malherbe made a visit to the USA to view, first-hand, radio control activity on the west coast of the USA. There was a plethora of commercially-available RC sets, and this prompted Monte to invite Howard Bonner and Bob Palmer to visit South Africa to demonstrate reliable radio control, and control line flying by Palmer, with the ubiquitous Thunderbird. This visit in April of 1957 caused a chain reaction in South Africa, and activity was enough for the establishment of STARS, the Southern Territories Amateur Radio Society, catering exclusively for the radio control enthusiasts. Naturally the birth of this association created animosity, as the representative body at the time, felt that its members were excluded. But more in the next issue.

Chips and Betty Wannenburg with the Walt Good designed Rudderbug, and Good Brothers RC equipment for guidance.

Zamora, Spain saw a South African helicopter team participating in the 2005 F3C World Championship. Left is Johan Sieling and Danie van der Linden, while Henke Beyers and Hein Viljoen are on the right. Fred Raubenheimer won the 1956 RC Nationals at the Palmietfontein airport with this R6-B model. Jan Smuts airport was completed and commissioned, and Palmietfontein south of Alberton became available.

Arthur Pienaar built some serious scale helicopters in his day, all the types that were used by the SAAF. Detail and workmanship incredible.

From the SAMAA Office

Bob Skinner and Linda Dold

In the last issue of SAMAA News, I published a list of SAMAA and SAARF chairmen and presidents. Shortly after publication, Joe Coetzer reminded me that Percy Attfield’s name had been inadvertently left off the list. Percy served as SAMAA chairman from 2008 to 2011. 1976 1979 1976 1979 1982 1986 1989 1992 1997 2005 2008 2011 2013 2020

All these gentlemen served our association selflessly and steered it to prosperous times through feast and famine. There was a time in the late 1960s that SAARF was dire straits, not through any fault of the chairman at the time; it was just difficult to convince the modellers that a national association was there to look after their needs and interests, and to offer protection. In 1984, at the AGM in Welkom, the SAARF committee under chairmanship of Ian Fraser, re-united all aeromodelling interests under the umbrella of one association, the South African Model Aircraft Association. Currently, the Association is faced with a problem; there is a serious lack of juniors joining the SAMAA. Newcomers, yes, but not school-going children. In a way this is understandable, since scholars are faced with a huge scholastic workload, and extra-mural activities, and what little spare time they have left, is probably spent indoors. Outdoor activities are usually confined to sports like cricket, rugby, football, athletics, and others, and aeromodelling is either not attractive to youngsters, or there is a perception that it may be too expensive. Ever looked at the price of sports equipment lately? It is often far more expensive than the start-up price of a basic 4-channel RC set and a trainer aircraft. The bulk of the SAMAAs membership is adult members (age 18 to 60) with an increasing number of senior citizens, who have now reached a stage in their lives where they are retired, and have more time and finances, to spend on aeromodelling. I have, in the last few months, come to learn that this is a worldwide problem, and most aeromodelling associations around the world are in the same boat. Perhaps aviation has lost its glamour. Kids don’t look up anymore when an aircraft passes overhead. So we reach the end of another year, and what an upside-down year this has been! The SAMAA Annual General Meeting was hosted on the 12th March, where the newly-elected SAMAA Management Committee members were introduced and their appointments ratified, and their duties began. Preparations were well on par for the Aerial Concepts SAMAA Combined Power Nationals 2020…and then…27th March 2020, the whole of South Africa comes to a standstill due to the Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). No more model flying, no more socialising, now what? The countdown started…Level 5, Level 4, Level 3…YEAH! At long last, model flying may resume under the CV-19 regulations and restrictions. All SAMAA-registered clubs who wished for their members to resume their activities, had to submit a Covid-19 Compliant Management Plan before model flying could resume at the clubs. Each club that applied was issued with a Compliance certificate/permit from the SAMAA office. Bob and I worked like crazy to make sure that all applications were fully compliant, and we issued the Compliance certificates in quick time. Level 2… clubs started hosting events, and the Fun Fly Series could commence, with round 2 (flown before the 14th October), and round 3, to be flown before the 30th November. The Fun Fly Masters is scheduled to be hosted 30th and 31st January 2021, at Teksa Radio Control Model Club (Trichardt). Planning commenced on the 07 July to host the Aerial Concepts SAMAA Combined Power Nationals 2020. Dates were set for 24-27 September. The Special Interest Groups that participated were; SAMPRA (Pylon Racing), MAASA (Model Aerobatics – MAASA conducted the 2020 Gauteng Championship on the same occasion and venue as well), LSA (Large Scale Aerobatics), and SAMJA (Jets). A total of 52 entries were received. The SAMAA Combined Power Nationals for 2021 will be hosted from 24-28 April at the Henley Model Airfield and Family Entertainment venue. Hope to see you there! On-line entries are open http://www.samaa.org.za/combined-power-nats/ A PDF-format entry form may be requested from admin@samaa.org.za. The updated Fixed-Wing Proficiency booklet was published. See the SAMAA website www.samaa.org.za. The SAMAA Compliance and Communications Officer, Alec Groenewald, has been writing bi-weekly communications to all SAMAA members, which is well received. Any news on club activities that you may have, please forward to the SAMAA office (admin@samaa.org.za or gm@samaa.org.za) for publication in the SAMAA News. Articles (MS Word format) to be no more than 1000 words, and photos to be in JPEG format, with captions. To all the SAMAA members and their families celebrating Christmas, all the best wishes and also a very prosperous New Year. Please keep safe and enjoy your flying!
