The province of gold This month we touch down in Gauteng, our smallest but richest province.

Did you know?

Gauteng quick facts

• Pretoria is the capital of South Africa. It is called the Jacaranda City because of all the trees with their pretty purple flowers that grow there. • Johannesburg is also called Jozi, Joburg and Egoli. • The city and province are both named for the gold mines there: Egoli means ‘Place of Gold' in Zulu and Gauteng means ‘Place of Gold’ in Sesotho. • Gauteng used to be called ‘Transvaal’.

Capital: Johannesburg Population: 12 272 000 Share of SA population: 23.7% Share of total area: 1.4% Languages: isiZulu, English, Afrikaans, Sesotho

Learn together Tswaing Crater

Geography

Gauteng is a high, flat inland area with the Magaliesberg and the Witwatersrand ridge rising up above it. The vegetation is mostly grassland with some savanna, where there are more trees. Gauteng has a pleasant climate with rain in summer. Joburg gets heavy thunderstorms in summer and can be quite cold with frost in winter. The province's main river is the Vaal. Blesbokspruit near the town of Springs is an important wetland. The Witwatersrand is a watershed: water running to the north flows into rivers and eventually into the Indian Ocean, while water running into rivers to the south ends up in the Atlantic Ocean.

10

• June 2016

About 220 000 years ago, a meteorite hit the Earth north of where Pretoria is today. The hole it left behind is called the Tswaing Crater and is 1.4 km in diameter.

History

Sotho and Tswana people have lived in the area for hundreds of years. In the early 1800s, a large group of Zulu people under King Mzilikazi arrived and drove them out. Then the Voortrekkers arrived and eventually took over from Mzilikazi. They founded the ZuidAfrikaanische Republiek in 1852, with Pretoria as its capital. In 1886, a miner named George Harrison found gold on the ridge called Witwatersrand. Thousands of people from all over the world

rushed there, hoping to get rich. One of the reasons for the South African War (1899–1902) between the Boers and the British was that the British were jealous and wanted to control the goldfields.

Heritage

The Cradle of Humankind is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is called the Birthplace of Humans because scientists have found that our ancestors lived there between 2 million and 3.3 million years ago. Union Buildings

At Maropeng in the Cradle of Humankind, you can learn the history of human evolution over the past 3 million years. Gold Reef City is a theme park and museum on the site of an old gold mine. Kwa Mai Mai Market in the centre of Johannesburg is one of its oldest traditional markets. You can go to a sports match. Gauteng has many famous teams, such as the Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. Visit Joburg Zoo and don't miss a ride on the Gautrain, the only high-speed train in South Africa.

GEOGRAPHY

At Gold Reef City, the Apartheid Museum tells all about the history of apartheid. In Soweto, the Hector Pieterson Memorial shows respect to the student uprising of 16 June 1976 (the day we now call Youth Day). Our country’s highest court is the Constitutional Court, which is on Constitution Hill in Braamfontein. In Pretoria, the Union Buildings house the South African Government and the President’s offices. Pretoria also has the Voortrekker Monument, which remembers the Voortrekkers who moved inland from the Cape. Freedom Park is a monument to all the South Africans who died in wars. The Pretoria Art Museum is an excellent place to see paintings and sculptures. In Johannesburg, Newtown has lots of art galleries, theatres and music venues.

Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden is the place to get back to nature in Johannesburg. If you visit the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve near Heidelberg, you can watch game, go for a hike or relax with a picnic.

Science and industry Gold mining made Johannesburg rich in the beginning, but today it is a big modern city. It's home to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and the head offices of many banks. A lot of business takes place in Sandton. One of Gauteng's research institutions is the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, which is the largest in Africa. The South African National Space Agency (our version of NASA) has an astronomical facility at Hartebeesthoek. Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto is the world’s third largest hospital.

Animals

Underwater world Visit an aquarium to see just how varied life below the waves is!

uShaka Marine World, Durban Durban is known for its warm climate, but uShaka Marine World is a cool place. It is the world’s fifth largest aquarium, but it is also a family theme park all about water, including huge water slides! Sea World is the centre of uShaka Marine World. Here, you’ll find the saltwater aquarium, performing dolphins, seals and penguins. In the Snorkel Lagoon, you can snorkel through reefs and grottos. In the Rocky Touch Pool, you can get right up close to sea creatures such as starfish. Or you can gaze through an enormous window at ocean fish such as tuna. If you’re feeling brave, Dangers of the Deep is all about sharks, sea snakes and other scary creatures, and the Deep Zone has weird animals that live way down in the dark waters. Or your favourite may be the Coral Gardens, where you can wonder at the bright colours of the coral. If you like seeing how things work, you can take a behind-the-scenes tour to find out how uShaka Marine World operates. And, if you want to be a marine zoologist, you can see how injured sea animals are rehabilitated.

14

• June 2016

The Two Oceans Aquarium, Cape Town The Two Oceans Aquarium lives up to its name: with more than 3 000 sea creatures, it showcases the marine life of the Atlantic Ocean and Indian Ocean, which meet near the Cape. With its underwater tunnel and opportunities to dive with the animals, it is one of the best aquariums in the world. If you visit, you will see life from the two contrasting oceans. In the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean Gallery, you can watch translucent jellyfish, giant spider crabs and tiny little Knysna seahorses. In the warmer Indian Ocean Gallery, orange-and-whitestriped clownfish (just like Nemo), other brightly coloured fish and coral reefs will fascinate you. In the I&J Predator Exhibit, ragged-tooth sharks and stingrays wait for visitors who are lucky enough to be able to dive in the tank with them. At the Kelp Forest Exhibit, you are guaranteed to be enchanted by the underwater forest, shafts of sunlight and shoals of fish.

Did you know? The word ‘aquarium’ comes from the Latin aqua, meaning ‘water’.

TEXT: NICOLAAS FAASEN; PHOTOGRAPHY: GALLO/GETTYIMAGES/THINKSTOCK, DURBAN.IVENTURECARD.COM, DANBORN.WORDPRESS.COM

Animals of the Amazon, Joburg Zoo You can now see fish at the Joburg Zoo too. A structure built to look like a Mayan temple houses animal species from Central and South America. This includes a six metre-long tunnel that runs through a freshwater aquarium. As you walk along, you can see fish usually only found in the Amazon River swimming around you.

Learn together Discuss with your child which sea animal they think is the most interesting.

Extreme fish watching There are also other, totally different ways of seeing fish. If you are very brave, you can go shark-cage diving! A professional guide will you take you out in a boat and lower you down into the water in a giant cage, so that you can encounter the toothy fish close up. Just don't to stick your hands out of the bars!

No flu here! Cough … sneeze … cough-cough-cough! You know the feeling? Here’s how you get sick and how to avoid it.

Vera the Flu Virus

This is Tim. He has learnt all about the flu virus, so that he won't get sick this winter.

Meet Vera the Flu Virus. She's only about 100 nanometres wide. (A ‘nanometre’ is one billionth of a metre – so tiny that you probably can’t even imagine it!)

‘Hi! Glad to meet you. That guy over there with influenza (the proper name for ‘flu’) has just sneezed with his mouth wide open. Thousands of us flu viruses flew out in drops of saliva travelling at up to 160 km per hour.’ ‘Now I’m waiting for you to touch your mouth or nose or eyes. Then I’ll sneak into your respiratory tract. There, I’ll latch on to a nice cell inside your body. I don’t have a membrane around myself, so I’ll just stick to the membrane around the host cell.’ ‘I’ll release my nucleic acid into your cell. This is like a program that tells your cell to make many more viruses like myself. Your cell then bursts open and thousands of new viruses pop out and go off to find other cells to make thousands more viruses. So, your cells die off and we viruses continue to spread.’

‘That’s how we – the tiniest of tiny organisms – make your head and body ache, why you cough and sneeze, why your nose runs and your temperature rises. ‘I’m the 2016 Virus Model. We keep on changing, so it’s difficult to fight us! This year's medicine won't work next year. And antibiotics do nothing to us!'

Cold or flu? We often say we have flu when we actually just have a cold. A cold can be unpleasant, but it is usually less serious than flu and doesn’t last as long. A bad case of flu can cause a fever and may even lead to a more serious illness, such as pneumonia.

‘Ha ha ha! My parents told me about the likes of you. I won’t touch my mouth or nose, and I’ll go and wash my hands with soap and water right now.’ ‘I eat fruit and vegetables with lots of vitamins. My parents make sure that I sleep enough, that we get fresh air in our house and keep everything clean. They say I need to build up a strong immune system. Prevention is better than cure, so we had vaccine injections at the clinic.’

‘During flu season, I'm careful to avoid people who are coughing or sneezing when I'm at school or in a crowd. And I always wash my hands before I eat. So I’m sure I can fight you off!’

‘Well, then I’m off to attack a kid who knows less about keeping healthy! Or an older person – they’re usually easy victims. But be warned: I’ll be back again next year during the cold winter months. We flu viruses and our buddies, the cold viruses, have an appointment with two million South Africans every year.’

Holiday havoc

Story

By Raadiyah Abrahams Illustration by Ryan Sedeman

Learn together Ask your child about the ending of the story: Is it convincing or not?

'S

hould we go to the museum today?’ Lihle and Keke’s mom asked. Lihle nibbled on her scone and mumbled. They were having breakfast on day two of their holiday in a small town. Nothing good had happened yet. ‘Can’t we do something exciting today?’ Lihle asked. ‘I wish we could go to a theme park or explore the world’s biggest maze... Something awesome!’ ‘Well, they don’t have any places like that here,’ said the girls’ dad. ‘Fine, let’s just go to the museum,’ said Lihle. ‘We’ll get ready and then meet you back upstairs.’ The girls dragged their feet to the lifts and up to their floor. Bang! Just as they stepped out of the lift, something made the floor split in half. There was no way to get to their room on the other side! ‘We should go back down and get help,’ Keke said. ‘This looks super-dangerous!’ But, as they turned around to take the stairs down to the ground floor…

• June 2016

Bang! Another big crack formed right in front of the staircase. They looked around: no emergency buttons, no one to call for help. It was up to them to figure this out. ‘There!’ Lihle said, pointing to the door of one of the rooms. The sign on it read: ‘Start here’. ‘That’s weird, but it seems like the best chance we have so far,’ said Keke. The girls opened the door, and stumbled into a field of… ‘Daisies?’ Lihle asked, surprised. ‘But we were just in a hotel a moment ago. How can we be outside?’ ‘This is all getting so weird!’ Keke added. ‘Here’s a note on the back of the door,’ said Lihle. ‘ Get to the other end, and you’ll have more time to spend,’ she read. ‘So we have to get to the other end of the field. That should be easy enough.’ As soon as she finished her sentence, the field lit up in flames. Lihle grabbed Keke by the hand and they ran as fast as they could, making it to the other side with seconds to spare. They rushed through a door that had appeared out of nowhere.

‘What is happening?’ Keke asked. ‘I have no idea!’ Lihle said, ‘But, whatever is going on, we have to complete the tasks we’re being given.’ ‘Brrr! Why is it so cold in here?’ Keke asked. The girls turned around. They were now in an icy landscape that looked like it could be in the middle of the Arctic. And a polar bear was charging right at them! ‘More running coming uuuppp!’ Lihle shouted, grabbing Keke’s hand again and making a dash for a door she could see in an iceberg. Open door. Slam shut. Slump to the floor on the other side of it. This was becoming a pattern. ‘I’m too scared to see where we’ve ended up now,’ Keke said. Lihle looked up at the back of the door. There was another note: ‘One last task to prove you’re

great, just make sure you aren’t the bait.’ And there they were, on a boat in the middle of the ocean. ‘We’re the only ones here!’ Lihle gasped. She spotted something in the distance. ‘And that looks like a WHALE!’ An enormous whale was coming right at them, its mouth wide open… closer and closer until… Splash! ‘Girls, wake up! It’s bad manners to fall asleep at the breakfast table! And now you’ve spilled that glass of water all over!’ Their mom had appeared in front of them. ‘Honestly, the two of you should have better manners!’ Lihle and Keke looked around. Somehow, they had ended up back in the hotel breakfast room. But they had both seen the whale. Had they just had the same dream? ‘So, you haven’t answered the question: Do you girls want to go to the museum today? Your dad and I thought we could probably squeeze in a visit to the lake afterwards,’ their mom said. ‘No!’ Keke and Lihle shouted in unison. Their parents gave each other surprised looks. ‘I suppose just the museum will do then…’ And the girls breathed a sigh of relief.

Zulu love letters Beads are pretty, but they can also send a message. Zulu beadwork is famous all over the world. Maybe it’s the bright colours and beautiful patterns that people like so much! Here is an example of some Zulu beadwork:

Zulu women can ‘talk’ with beads by using different colours and patterns. When a young woman is in love with a man, she traditionally sends him a ‘love letter’ made of beads woven together to tell him how she feels. Each colour has a special meaning.
