Ο Κατσούρμπος πήρε το όνομα του από την ομώνυμη κωμωδία του Γεώργιου Χορτάτση. Ξεκίνησε τον Ιανουάριο του 2005. Περιγράφτηκε ως η «Αναγέννηση της Κρητικής κουζίνας» από τον Αθηναικό Τύπο αφού εισήγαγε την κρητική γαστρονομία στην Αθήνα. Όλα τα προιόντα που χρησιμοποιούνται στην κουζίνα του Κατσούρμπου) παραδίδονται μία φορά την εβδομάδα από αυτόνομες μονάδες παραγωγής του νησιού της Κρήτης. Εμβληματικά μας πιάτα είναι ανάμεσα σε άλλα το αρνί με το σταμναγκάθι, πίτες χειροποίητες με τυρί και άγρια χόρτα. Όλα συνοδεύονται με τοχειροποίητο εφτάζυμο μας και τη ρακή μας.

“Katsourbos” is named after the homonymous comedy by George Hortatsis. Katsourbos Cuisine was established in January 2005. It has been described as the “Renaissance of Cretan Cuisine” by the Athenian press, since it introduced the original Cretan gastronomy in Athens. All products used in Katsourbos Cuisine are delivered once per week from individual production units at the island of Crete. NATIONAL GARDEN

Just a few metres away from Syntagma metro station and right next to the national parliament lies the National Garden which, together with the Zappeion Hall, covers 24 hectares full of vegetation, rare kinds of plants, saplings and birds. The garden is accessible from seven entrances: The central entrance on Amalias Avenue, one on Vasilissis Sophias Avenue, three on Irodou Attikou Street and two more in the area of Zappeion. Before it was renamed “National”, the garden was called “Royal” or “The Garden of Amalia”, the queen to whom it owes its existence. The interest of Queen Amalia, wife of King Otto, in the garden completed in 1840 was such that she is said to have spent at least three hours a day personally taking care of it. She personally planted the iconic palm trees (now 25m tall) which grab the attention when you enter Vasilissis Amalias Avenue. The numbers speak for themselves. The garden is home to 7,000 trees, 40,000 bushes and other plants, making up 519 species and varieties. More than 100 of them are Greek, with Judas trees, oleanders and carob trees the undoubted stars, while others come from countries all over the world, such as Australian pines or Chinese trees-of-heaven. Centenarian Holm oaks, cypress trees and Canar y Island date palms are also amongst the plants that have been a feature of the garden since it was first created. There are also six lakes, all with a sizeable community of playful ducks. And one of the most amazing finds in the garden during 19th-centur y excavations is the Roman floor, uncovered at a depth of one meter, belonging to the cour tyard of a Roman villa ver y near what is now the entrance on Vasilissis Sophias Avenue. You’ll also love the sundial at the main entrance, where visitors tr y to guess the time before looking at their watch. The garden also has a conser vator y, children’s librar y and a small café (entrance on Irodou Attikou Street). The conser vator y is the place where plants are initially cultivated before being replanted in the garden and is considered to have been the countr y’s ver y first working greenhouse. The librar y, which has two reading rooms, a fair y tale room and a music and film room was founded in 1984. When it first opened, there were only 1,500 books on its shelves, but today there are more than 6,000.

The Embassy of France is situated at number 7, which was built between 1893 and 1895, in accordance with the architectural plans of Anastasios Metaxas, one of the most impor tant Greek representatives of neo-classicism. It originally belonged to British businessman Charles Louis William Merlin, who was the great grandson of French revolutionar y Merlin de Douai. The building was eventually purchased by the government of France in 1914 and has since been renamed Hôtel Merlin de Douai, in honour of the French ancestor of the original owner. The Parliament Building overlooks Syntagma Square at the beginning of Vasilissis Sofias Avenue. The distinguished Old Palace building was built for King Otto, designed by German architect Friedrich von Gär tner.

Byzantine Museum

The building features strong Doric elements and emits grandeur, despite the lack of external ornamentation. It was completed in 1842, and was occupied by Otto and Amalia from 1843 until their exile in 1862. King George I also resided in the palace until 1913, as well as Queen Mother Olga (until 1922). It was also used as a hospital and housed state agencies and organisations for the care of refugees from Asia Minor. It has suffered two fires –in 1884 and 1909, when much of the structure was destroyed. On 1 July 1935, it became the Greek parliament. A stroll in the National Garden, with its charming paths, clearings and small ponds, is the ideal conclusion to your walk.

The National Art Gallery of Athens is the most important museum for the history of art in Greece. It is located in a walking distance from Syntagma Square, just opposite Athens Hilton Hotel. he institutional role of the National Gallery is to collect, safekeep, preserve, study and exhibit works of art towards the aesthetic training of the public, the on-going education through art and the recreation that it is able to provide, as well as the self-awareness of the Greek people through the history of art, which expresses the national history on a symbolic level. ACROPOLIS MUSEUM

The Acropolis Museum is an archaeological site-specific museum, housing more than 3.000 famous artefacts from the Athenian Acropolis, the most significant sanctuary of the ancient city. Located in the historical area of Makriyianni, southeast of the Rock of the Acropolis, the Museum narrates the story of life on the Rock from prehistoric times until the end of Antiquity. From its opening in June 2009 until March 2012 more than 4 million local and foreign visitors have passed through the Museum’s doors. Architect Bernard Tschumi’s new Acropolis Museum replaced the old Museum on the Rock of the Acropolis. The new museum has a total area of 25,000 square meters, with exhibition space of over 14,000 square meters, approximately ten times the size of the old Museum. A tailor made museum building with extensive use of glass ensures breathtaking views of the Acropolis, the surrounding historic hills and the modern city

of Athens and immediate views of the archaeological excavation that lies below the Museum, visible through large expanses of glass floor. VOULIAGMENI LAKE

Vouliagmeni Lake, in the heart of the Athenian Riviera, is the hidden treasure of Attica’s nature. Situated on an idyllic landscape, this rare geological phenomenon is waiting to be discovered. The lake’s brackish waters which are continuously replenished both by the sea and the underground thermal springs offer a natural and unique thermal spa experience. At the edge of the lake, near the rocks, starts a labyrinth underwater cave which has been explored at a length of 3,123 metres, while the cave’s end remains elusive. Among the 14 tunnels which make up the cave there is one reaching 800 metres in length the longest in the world. The imposing rock, thermal waters, the labyrinthine underwater tunnels and the lush vegetation create a unique geological phenomenon. The lake’s present form was created after the

roof of the cave fell because of erosion caused by the high temperature of the running water running. The lake is included in Greece’s national NATURA 2000 network and as a Site of Outstanding Natural Beauty by the Ministry of Culture. The aquatic paradise of Vouliagmeni Lake hosts in its green waters a variety of unique organisms. Among them, a kind of sea anemone called Paranemonia Vouliagmeniensis stands out, as well as species of sponges and molluscs which portray the perfect balance of the lake’s ecosystem.
