CONCEPT Provide rural municipali es and conserva on groups with meaningful watershed data and analysis useful for strategic land use decision-making. PROCESS Small group waded 40 miles and 16 watersheds of the Virgin River. Pairing data with VIRGIN GIS mapping, we analyzed the results in the context of development. SITE

TITLE

PALUSTRINE URBIC FOREST: The dry, acidic, highlycompacted + disturbed soil lies at the site’s high point. Devoid of nutrients, organic ma er, + moisture, it is remediated first by Panicum virgatum and its deep roots, then Pinus rigida, a resilient tree.

MARITIME URBIC PLAIN: Surgical inser ons at the site’s edge for soil + vegeta on that make a city + its inhabitants healthy + resilient. Andropogon scoparius hyperaccumulates petrochemicals + increases organic ma er. Shade-tolerant Betula and Pinus promote soil respira on + temperature regula on. 20

MARITIME URBIC SPONGE: Plagued by post-industrial toxic soil, the primary design interven on is both mediator + narrator. A long-term phytoremedia on strategy animates this area with mixed Salix species.

Coppiced biennially, the branches are used to make Biochar—a soil amendment—and for the arts. The roots that store inorganic chemicals are removed after 30 years or un l the soil is safe for people. 22
