The primary conceptual driver for the Rand Campus Center is to promote interaction and innovation by maximizing flexibility and encouraging chance encounters. The mobility loop became this source of interaction that in turn became the physical form of the building. To further enhance Rand’s core values, the addition of courtyard green spaces, cafes, entertainment areas, bars, a fitness center, a hotel, and an educational center allow for professionals and the public from San Jose and around the world to interact in ways never before possible. With the San Jose airport only minutes away, the Rand Campus will become an icon and destination for the city.

CIVIC CENTER OF ECHO PARK: YOUTH THINK TANK SPRING 2010 | ECHO PARK, CA


PROGRAM DISTRIBUTION

In addition to civic programs, this building provides a youth think tank for children of Echo Park. Seven out of eight schools in Echo Park are elementary or middle schools, so this think tank is a place where selected, driven youth can gather after school and brainstorm, exploring ideas about their future vision of Echo Park. This provides an opportunity for youth to get involved in their community at an early age. A convenient crosswalk directly connects Echo Park to the corner of the site. Based on these access points, the main entrance for the building is on the West facade, and brings visitors through a three-story sky lit atrium and into the public exterior space. As one enters the site, they catch a glimpse of the Council Chamber, Anti room, and Youth Think Tank.

STUDY MODELS

CONCEPTUAL LONGITUDINAL SECTION

The panel system that surrounds the think tank provides shade and acts as an informational skin. Where some transparent panels display inspirational quotes or mathematics, others are more opaque, providing shade. If the children need to take a break or get away, they can retreat into the panels. Located on the third floor, the panel walkway makes a loop, creating a contemplative and private space for the youth.

SITE PLAN

The site is located at the end of the 10 Freeway, adjacent to the Santa Monica Pier and beach. Examining the site more closely, it has two defining physical conditions: the linear flow from the pier to Colorado Blvd., and the 60 foot drop from the park to the beach. The site is also adjacent to three unique typologies of public space: the beach, the pier, and the park, south of the Santa Monica civic center. This project mitigates these conditions by connecting all three typologies of public space onto the site through the creation of a new public space for the Santa Monica community.

CONCEPTUAL MONTAGE


PERSPECTIVE VIEW FROM HOTEL


The design of this new type of public space flows continuously from the street to the pier over the design of a new museum and gallery for Santa Monica. A housing tower slab hovers over the datum created by the extension of the pier up to Ocean Ave and defines the continuous lobby of the museum. It also defines an urban street that connects the pier, park, and beach, that is supported by retail program and the density of the housing tower.

HONDA SMART HOUSE 2012 - 2014 | DAVIS, CA


Located just west of UC Davis in Northern California, the Honda Smart House is a demonstration home that showcases Honda’s latest advancements in sustainable technology. From the start, the primary goal was sustainability and a zero net carbon footprint. Designed on a two foot grid for construction efficiency, the HSH is oriented south to maximize natural daylight. Large window overhangs were designed to minimize summer sun and maximize winter daylight. The double exterior wall construction and triple glazed windows provide additional insulation, and motorized operable clerestory windows naturally cool and ventilate the double height greatroom. Collaborating with the Honda team and the firm principals, my roles included: conceptual design, working drawings, sustainable material research/analysis/boards, 3D modeling, rendering, diagraming, and presentation material. The house was completed in January 2014.




In collaboration with UC Davis engineering students and faculty, experimental geothermal heat pumps were designed to extend 20 feet underground beneath the backyard. The water from these pumps circulates through the house for radiant cooling, heating, and domestic hot water use.

SANTA MONICA CONDOMINIUMS 2013 - 2014 | SANTA MONICA, CA


SITE PLAN

The Santa Monica Condominiums site is located on Ocean Avenue, north of the Santa Monica Pier in California. With beautiful views of the ocean, this 13 unit complex respects the historic neighborhood through its clean white facade, while providing residents with framed views, highlighted with fresh pops of color. The adjustable custom fabricated metal panel system allows for privacy and shade, and playfully wraps around main exterior circulation stairwell, adding a canopy like experience to a typically underwhelming space. Collaborating with Everardo Garcia and Adele Chang, my roles included: conceptual design, plans, sections, elevations, material research and boards, 3D modeling, renderings, and submittal package compilation.

TROPICAL MODERN

TROPICAL MODERN REAR PERSPECTIVE MEDITERRANEAN

CONTEMPORARY

The Dubai Hills Villa is part of a development in Dubai Hills, UAE. This 12,000 sf, nine bedroom villa was made for luxury and overlooks a golf course from its backyard. Designed along the axes of the circular motorcourt, the villa presented an intriguing challenge, as we were requested to provide three distinct elevation styles without changing the plan: Tropical Modern, Mediterranean, and Contemporary.

Why do the majority of clients today feel more comfortable in a ‘stylized’ home? What do styles contribute to the field of architecture? These questions and more bubbled up throughout the design process, as we worked with the client to understand their culture and perspective on building and construction. SITE PLAN

Las Tunas is a mixed-use project that includes 37 condominiums, a restaurant, and retail. Located in San Gabriel, CA on Las Tunas Drive, this complex is just blocks from the historic San Gabriel Mission. Honoring the mission through its Traditional Spanish elevation, the complex also includes underground parking, a gym, and a large courtyard. Working with Everardo Garcia and Armine Movsesyan, my roles included: all unit plan designs, site plan, hand colored elevations, sections, details, material research and boards, and submittal package compilation.
