POINT, LINE, PLANE

I chose to use a material that was fluid in nature that could be easily manipulated in a variety of shapes and sizes, in this project I used sewing thread. I chose this as it could effectively represent how line can be manipulated into a variety of shapes and sizes when used in conjunction with point. The crossing over and junctions of lines created triangulation in both its form and more importantly the shadows it created in different lights. Point is displayed in the junctions in which the lines cross over. Plane is shown in the lines that have been filled with thread through the middle of line junctions (triangles). This shows the relationship between line, point and plane through triangulation. Where line can make points in its junctions of crossing, and planes through repetition – creating a fill plane effect from a distance. 1

POINT, LINE AND PLANE INSPIRATION This piece displays excellnt examples of the architectues use of plane - vertically through the diagonal planar roof, and additionally through the walls of the building. Line is shown in the strucutral thin, black pillars which also project shaded lines into the building wall. Point is shown through the meetings of the ground and black pillars. I used this peice to inspire my design espeicially through line and it’s projection of shaddows. Shaddows are incredibly effective when showcasing line and point at the junctions between the lines. his is what i esuccessfully achieved in my own model.

MASS

SOLID AND VOID: DARKNESS AND LIGHT: TOUCH AND SEE "When it comes to excavated ground, dreams have no limit" (Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space)

In this work I wanted to encapsulate the heavy, claustrophobic, surrounds of mass through the ever present unknowns and heaviness of the underground world. I did this through making the surrounding edges of the drawing dark and gloom with black charcoal. I then wanted to show the wonder and mystery behind all the darky spaces through allowing light to reach the space in the centre and showcase something that couldn’t be seen from above ground. This aspect of the drawing is the point like structures hanging from the ceiling. They may serve no purpose or they may.. it is the wonder and the hidden mystery amongst the heavy, dark gloom of mass that I wanted to display. 3

MASS INSPIRATION Mass is explored exceptionally well in this design. The choice of lighting and modern aspects to the interiors of this building provide a clean, light feel to the building. They also provide an illusion of wonder and excitment to the space. Something I want to encapsulate into my deisng. Whilst this is the case, the exposed cave walls give the building a heavy, restricted contrast. Something in which highlights the essence of mass. This was explored in my design.

Pionen Data Center, Stokholm http://websitehostreview.com/10-most-incredible-data-centers-on-earth/ 4

FRAME AND INFILL VIEW OF THE SKY, VIEW OF THE HORIZON, VIEW OF THE GROUND "Each wall of each hexagon is furnished with five bookshelves; each bookshelf holds thirty-two books identical in format; each book contains four hundred ten pages; each page, forty lines; each line, approximately eighty black letters." Jorge Luis Borges from The library of Babel

Frame and infill was explored through antigravity largely in this design. The whole structure balanced on an angle of 45 degrees with suspending black boxes in the middle of two of the cube frames. I used a range of varying materials and heights to showcase how frame and infill work simultaneously to compose a form through balance, antigravity forms and translucent materials. Another stand out regarding this design is its ability to cast shadows under different views of light. The shadows it displays enhance the notion of frame and infill, multiplying the number of both elements within the composition.

5

FRAME AND INFILL INSPIRATION Office Off By Heri & Salli Architects, is a rime example of frame and infill as it encapsulates all the main aspects of frame and infill in its one design, that I had intended to incorporate into my own model. The frame sitting outside of the main mass of the building illustrates a sence of heaviness that mass is known for. Additionally the range of materials used - some of which connect to the frame and some of which are recessed back from the frame further highlight the frame being the main structural element. Whilst the smaller cubes that are attached to the outside frame arfixed to the timber , the small cubes still have a sence of antigravity about them. as they suspend from the main structure of the inside mass. I have used this as inspiration within my own design for the antigravity aspects.

STUDIO EARTH CONCEPTS COMBINED

HERRING ISLAND, SOMETHING LIKE A PAVILION The previous explored concepts including: point, line and plane, frame and infill and mass, are critical to the outcome of the Herring Island final design. I collected successful aspects of each of these concepts and inter-twinned them into my final project as seen on the left. An understanding of these successful elements from the previous projects allowed me to fully explore the Herring Island Secrets brief, especially in creating spaces in which showcased elements above, below and underground.

Mass My original mass concept inspired my final Herring Island design as shown on the right through its under ground elements. I used the idea of the unknown through mass, the same as in my Mass concept drawing. I explored the unknown of the underground world through darkness and heaviness in the sharp triangulation of the underground mass structure. I also had the aspect of gloom as the space is intended to be a cave like dark space, until its purple crystal elements light up. As will be explained in more detail throughout this book.

Frame and Infill Inspired my final Herring island design largely through its use of antigravity. I used the concept of antigravity inspired by my frame and infill work in the above ground pavilion structure as aspects of the triangle forms overhang with little structural support – hence displaying anti-gravity. It is also displayed in the underground aspects of my final design, in the purple, crystal structures that hang from the ceiling.

Point, Line and Plane I integrated the triangulation aspects from my point, line and plane model in all areas of: on ground, above ground and underground in my final design. Point is seen in every junction between the edge lines of each triangle and plane is explored the most in my final as I felt I gained a better understanding of plane after the concept exercise. Plane is shown in the above ground reflective, pavilion aspects of the design with large overhanging and angled triangle planes creating its form. Plane is also used in the walls of the underground cave like space, along with line; that creates the triangulation form and point in which connects the junction of lines and planes together. 8

HERRING ISLAND SITE ANALYSIS CONTOURS AND TOPOGRAPHY

THE CHOSEN SITE IS LOCATED ON THE WEST CONRNER OF THE ISLAND AND IS CONTAINS MUC MORE OF A SLOPE THAN OTHER ASPECTS OF THE PARK WITH LITTLE OPEN SPACE APART FROM THE GREY DITCH AS SHOWN IN THE IMAGE ABOVE. . RANGING LAND HEIGHTS FROM ENTERING AT A STEEP THEN LOWERING BY AROUND 1X THE HEIGHT OF ITS ENTRANCE POINT, TO THEN FORM A DITCH AS SHOWN IN THE DIAGRAM WHICH HAS BECOME THE SITE FOR THE SCULPTURE, “STEERAGE”. THE SITES LAND LEVEL THEN INCREASES AGAIN TO IT’S WEST POINT, WHERE IT THEN LOWERS TO THE WATERS EDGE.

CHOSEN SITE - ILLUSTRATED BY GREEN DOT 1:200 CLIMATE Herring island is sheltered from harsh cooling winds by the abundance of foliage and tall thick trees situated around the parkland. Additionally, the site has many areas of shade due to this vegetation, providing areas of comfort in warmer months for its users. However, due to melbourne’s varying seasons, the park is exposed to harsh rain and cool climates during winter months and also heat extremes and humitity in the summer months. When designing the pavilion for this site, these should be taken into consideration. 9

HERRING ISLAND SITE ANALYSIS

CONSTRAINTS CONSTRAINTS OF THIS CHOSEN SITE INCLUDE ITS SURROUNDS WITH VEGETATION AND TREES, THIS REDUCES THE SIZE OF OPEN SPACE THAT THE SITE HAS TO OFFER IN WHICH GIVES IT A POINT OF DIFFERENCE FROM OTHER SITE OPTIONS SUCH AS THE OVAL. THIS CONSTRAINT WHILST IN SOME ASPECTS MAY SEEM LIMITING MY DESIGN WILL USE IT TO ITS ADVANTAGE THROUGH PROVIDING ASPECTS OF CAMOFLAGUE TO MY DESIGN IN WHICH WILL STREGNTHEN THE “SECRET” THROUGH MY DESIGN. ADDITIONALLY THE WATER BODIES SURROUNDING THE SITE MAY BE OF A CONSTRAINT AS IT LIMITS THE AMOUNT OF VIEWERS WITH DIRECT ACCESS TO THE SITE.

OPPORTUNITIES THIS SITE, UNIQUE TO OTHER AREAS OF HERRING ISLAND PROVIDE AN ESCAPE FROM OTHER USERS, IT IS AT THE FAR CORNER OF THE SITE IN WHICH DURING MY SITINGS ITS SEEMED THAT FEW PEOPLE WALKED ALL THE WAY AROUND THE SITE TO IT, INSTEAD MERELY STOPPING AT THE FIRST OVAL THEY SAW. THIS SPACE IS SO CLOSE TO THE WATERS EDGE THAT IT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO UTILISE THE YARRA RIVER IN MY DESIGN IN WHICH IN ITSELD REVEALS OR HIDES MANY SECRETS.. WHAT IS IN THE YARRA... IS IT AS CALM UNDERWATER AS IT IS ON THE SURFACE...

CHOSEN SITE

PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS ON CHOSEN SITE the chosen site for my design contains one of Herring Islands loved art works by Jill Peck, 1997. “Steerage” Canberra sculptor Jill Peck has created a large scale Harcourt granite boat form at the westernmost point of the island as a metaphor for journeys, water and knowledge. A path leads up a bank between two mounds to reveal this unexpected resting place for contemplation. The prow of the sculpture and the prow of the Island point downstream towards the city's horizon.

SECRETS CONCEPTICAL CONCEPTICAL IDEAS: Alike my final design inspiration as showcase on the preivous pages. My concepticle was also greatly influenced by the previous work concepts of point, line and plane; frame and infill; and mass. Iwanted to explore the underground spaces in my site, particularly in relation to what was already on the current site - “steerage sculpture. I wanted to explore what it would be like underneath the boat sculpture, the unknowns, the fantasy and the enchantment that could potentially lie beneath. Through this I took an imanginative appraoch towards Mass, whilst still having the dark, heaviness associated ; this space was meant to intrigue the target market (children) as stated on the brief - hence it has clear shards hanging from the ceiling in which could be anything and therefore must be up to the imagination of the child... Could this be what it is like under all boats? Or is this a magical boat? The above ground space was intended to provoke illusion in site goers minds - the material will reflect this in the final design. Varying heights and levels were also greatly explored through this concepticle. Having forms both above ground and suspending as seen in the pavilion structure. Having forms o triangulation that sat flat on the grounds surface . Additionally, this design has underground aspects that are meant for intriguing guests and raising questions in young minds.

A secret is powerful when it is empty. – Umberto Eco, The Paris Review (2008) When a secret is there but not known it Keeps people wondering as wonder, enchantment, curiousity, illusion, temptation is what keeps a secret alive; once a secret is known it is no longer a true secret.

SECRETS.

After the completion of my conceptacle, I decided that in order to meet the briefs requirements of creating a space in which had a secret or that children could identify with secrets, I would need to decide what a secret is. In doing this I created a mind map in which resulted in the following words: Enchantment New experiences Wonder Illusion Temptation Curiosity Unknown/ mystery With this I decided that I wanted not only my architecture to hold secrets. However, I also wanted the architecture to be a learning tool in which reflects the nature of secrets by including all of the above words into my final design.

SECRETS INSPIRATION “IF YOU WANT TO KEEP A SECRET YOU MUST ALSO HIDE IT FROM YOURSELF” GEORGE ORWELL, 1984

“I WANT TO BE THE ONE WHO KNOWS SECRET THINGS OR ELSE ALONE” RAINER MARIA RILKE

Gioberto Noro’s images capture elements of secrets sthat i entend to explore in my design for Herring Island His play on natural elements with harsh made made structures showcase the sub-concious illusional aspects of that secrets often display on ones mind. He does this through overgrowth of natural elemnts tricking the mind to assume that the images are taken in nature. Simarly his use of water in the image on the left captues the stillness nature of calm environments and how such subtlies can refelct its surrounds - causing an optical illusion of the near vanished distinction between the water body and the rest of its environment . In addition to this, Noro’s work captures the enchantment and curiosity of the mind as these images spark wonder and temptation of knowing answers for things that are unclear in the iamges. I would like to transfer this idea of enchantment, bewilderness and curiousity into my final design as I believe that it is the core to secrets, wonder and curiousity ini which releases a desire to know and understand the unknown. The lower image (FIG 3 ) on the left of the page whilst not enclosed in nature, captulates similar themes showcased in Noro’s other works. Curiosity, of what is at the bottom of the stairs, behind the pillar walls, where the site is, all is intended to enter audiences minds to ponder. An element that particularly intrests me in this image is the tempation of peaking down the stairs or entering the stair well if one was to be experiencing the space first hand, as well as the unpredictibility of what they may find.

MASS AND MYSTERY http://thatoregonlife.com/2016/09/crystal-cave-oregon/

This Crystal cave is legended to be found in the central desert of Oregon, USA with qestionalble/ unknown existance it still remains a secret to this day. I intend on encapsulating the element of secracy and inner beauty that cannot be seen from outside or without knowning that it is there. intend to explore this thtrough my underground aspects of my design with the hope of creating a space of exploration, curioisty and mystery to occur.

ILLUSION

This ice cave or Crystal Cave in Iceland is on the edge of the glacier where it enters into a lagoon. It is only possible to access it when the lagoon is frozen.

WONDER http://imgur.com/gallery/oG5JgH2

This image inspired my design through its illusion aspects - it is diffiicult to decifer what is the roof, the walls and the floor through its illuminated reflective surface of the frozen water. This illusion / distortment that it leaves in ones mind when ecperiencing the site is what i want to convey in my design. Thrugh doing this , my architecture will be enabled to the architecture hold a great secret. Additionally I chose this image as inspiration due to its adjustable, variable, changing state. This will be incorporatted through the crystal aspects in my design.

SECRETS DEVELOPMENT THE PROCESS

WONDER ILLUSION TEMPTATION ENCHANTMENT

After gaining a greater understanding of the concepts; point, line and plane; mass and frame and infill, in conjunction with the research and deep anaylsis of the make up of secrets, I have come to an understanding of where my design has headed. The aim of the final design is to show a triangulation of the concepts explored during the studios throughout the semster as well as the wonder, illusion, temptation, enchantment and curisorty that comes with the mystery of secrets. I intended to exlpore these ideas through materials in the following ways: Mirror reflective surface on the pavilion interior and exterior surfaces: this is intended to evoke illusion. What is real and what is an illusion. The mirror will reflect the natural surroundings of the island, whilst similtaniously reflecting children and parents image back at them. I intended to display the illusional aspect of secrets - how sometimes it is difficult to tell the difference between what is real.... and what is an illusion. Following this is the temptation of knowing what is real and what is fake... however for some the secret answer to this may remain unknown (espeically in younger children). Curiousity is experienced when visiting the site - as there is a case of mysterious stairs that lead underground to the unknown... The unknown will unleash temptation to go and experience what is underneath the ground of the structure. Enchantment is experienced when visting the underground aspects of the final design. The enchantment will be experienced when the 5 minute interval occurs. This is when the crystal like structures as shown in the purple hanging from the roof, light up at 5 minute intervals and reveal an enchanting light show underground. This will not only make viewers feel enchantment it will also evoke curioisty and the temptation to know how and why the crystals light up.

SECRETS DEVELOPMENT AND LIVE PERFORMANCE

Approximate floor plan of the interior canopy

Inside the most enclosed illusion structure lays the ability to transform into a bathroom, store room and small internal spaces for pratical use i.e. cafe preperation areas. The way in which this occurs is that all individuals can walk straight under the canopy into the enclosed area. This is another secret within the architecture as when seen from up close and a-far it is near impossible to see what is inside until you walk under the canopy planes and inside.

Male/ Female toilet

Illusion is one of the key factors in which is displayed in the render of this design. Mirrors placed on the outside of all walls both internal and external on the structure will relay an element of false reality, illusion mystery and wonder. Encapsulating all of the wonderful experences and feelings associated with secrets. This continues down into the under ground level of the design. Underground the vibrant purple, crystal shaped structures will light up at five minute intervels. This will imprint enchantment and excitment into visitors such as childrens minds. They will also have the gift of being able to walk away with a five minute secret light show, hidden from the grounds surface.

REFLECTION

Of the semesters work This semester of work, whilst having been challangeiing and demanding at times, has taught me knowledge that I will continue to use for my furute endevours over both my University and Professional careerhe leelemnts of point, line and plane are an integral pat of the buildt environment and an understanding of the tightly weived inter-relationship between them is what I have gained from this semester - something that I did not know before. Additionally, my knowledge in frame and infill has grown, something of which I had struggled to understand in the beggining of the semester, however now have a strong awareness of what it entales. Lastely, the importance of integrating the tree levels: above, below and on ground have raised an importance within me. After the completion of this semester I have been opened to the possibiltities that using all three can have on a structure. I belive that really made the most of this in my final desingn - clearly showing a distinction between the varying heights and relationships between these.
