WORK
PEDESTRIANS RULE An exploration into the affects of population increase on mental health along the pedestrian edge.
The goal was to retrofit the pedestrian edge throughout the streets of Downtown Orlando in order to adapt to population increase, improve mental health, increase public interaction and reclaim street space for pedestrians Location: Wall Street, Orlando Florida Type: Outdoor Public Space
Program: Walk through garden, food trucks, public gathering, private reading spaces Year: Spring & Fall Semester 2017-18 - MRP Page 7

Each street in Downtown Orlando was graded based on qualities that aid mental health discovered through MRP research. Streets with 1 negative were deemed successful, those with 2-3 were considered somewhat successful, & those with 4 or more were not successful. Page 8
Pedestrians Rule
Grading each street allowed for a map depicting areas in most need. During this analysis, streets were also evaluated for their potential for growth and opportunities for change.

This design allows pedestrians to escape from the many stressors with in the city. The use of color and scented plants activate the mind and creates a calming place to get away.

A HIDDEN PAUSE An educating intervention in a hidden edge with spaces for pause and self realization.
The goal was to create a space in Mckinney Falls State Park to educate visitors on recycling habits and ways of keeping the environment healthy.
Location: Mckinney Falls, Texas Type: Pavilion
Program: Recycling Collector, Office, Educational Space Year: Spring Semester 2014 - Design 6
Page 21
Samantha ScimĂŠ - Professional Portfolio
The experience of the approach to Mckinney was subtle and overwhelming at the same time. The river was hidden yet you could hear it in the distance.
Page 22
A Hidden Pause
Above is an experiential lacing of photos that express my experience through the park. It is this experience that influenced the design.
Page 23
Samantha ScimĂŠ - Professional Portfolio
These photos show the moment when the trail took a turn around a large boulder. The darkness with in the rocks, the blue sky above and the calming noise of the water persuaded the design to capture this space within.

Page 26
A Hidden Pause
It was important not to break the view of the endless rock, the view that took me by surprise. So the design was hidden along the rivers edge, breaking around the boulder to capture that experience.
Page 27
A FUTURE OF AWARENESS An educational facility for environmental learning and engaging with circulation that allows for foreshadowing.
The goal was to create a space in Downtown Austin, Texas to bring awareness and education on the various environmental impacts in Austin’s natural spaces. Location: Congress Ave & E 7th St, Austin, Texas 78701 Type: 6 Story Educational Facility
Program:Mix-use with classrooms, offices, outreach spaces and art labs Year: Spring Semester 2014 - Design 6 Page 29

Page 30
A Future of Awareness
Austin’s history is one of forced adaptation. Beginning its mark with the construction of it’s railroad, the city became endangered with a great flood and adapted with the construction of 3 dams.
Page 31
Samantha ScimĂŠ - Professional Portfolio
During my visit we toured the State Capital. Here we learned that the Senate included photos of their grandchildren to remind them when their passing laws to think of the affects on their family, this became the inspiration for the design.
Page 32
A Future of Awareness
This view shows two paths, one through a natural path and the other through the proposed community outreach area.

The building in section moves to a timeline. The underground floor represents the past, the first and second are today and the top three floors are the future. Program adjusts to this accordingly.

A COMMUNITY BACKYARD For an area with dense housing and no space for play, a yard is proposed.
The goal was to create a space in Dartmouth Park that created a park for the surrounding homes to interact within. Many of these homes lacked yard space, so the concept was to bring them a backyard.
Location: Dartmouth Park, Orlando Florida Type: Outdoor Space
Program: Food truck drive and a pavillion Year:

HIP - HOP WITH ROOTS Most know his front, the persona he displays, but not many know of the substance with in.
The goal was to create a highrise structure in the heart of Chicago that plays on the story of local rapper, Lupe Fiasco. The skin of this building represents how the public views him while the interior shows the true Fiasco. Location: Downtown, Chicago Illinois Type: MIxed Use Highrise
Program: Residential, Hotel, Resturants, Public outdoor space, and Music production Year: Fall Semester 2016 - Design 7 Page 49
Samantha Scimé - Professional Portfolio
With more analysis the “good” (left, showing successful schools, high income and high visitation) and “bad” (right, showing crime in transit, high arrests, and drug related arrests) of Chicago began to stand out. Lupe Fiasco’s Food and Liquor album speaks of these two sides as it relates to people visiting the convince store. Page 52
Hip - Hop with Chapter Roots
In Lupe’s song he names places of frequent visitation that create a sense of place (diagramed bottom left.) Places with the similar meaning to Downtown Chicago were diagramed in the top portion. The model combines these overlaying areas of similar significance.

A COMIC ANALYSIS With gaps between frames, it is the reader who actively strings them together to create a story.
The goal was to create a mixed use building in Miami by using a concept based on comic strips. People connect frames through memories and past experiences creating a full and complete story.
Location: Downtown Miami, Florida Type: Mixed use highrise
Program: Residential, Small Business, Restaurants and Offices Year: Spring 2016 - Design 8 Page 61

AN ACADEMIC BREAK A renovation to escape from learning, to promote community involvement and increase engagement among academic peers.
The goal was to retrofit the existing Libra Commons space to create a more functional communal space for dorm dwellers.
Location: Libra Commons, UCF Main Campus Type: 1 story Living space
Program: Food prep, dining, & lounge Year:
2016 Page 75
Samantha ScimĂŠ - Professional Portfolio
The existing lounge area lacked functionality and accommodation for interaction among academic peers.
Page 76
An Academic Break
Above are 4 of 6 options presented to UCF’s Housing Department. Each of these attempts to open up the space and allow for multiple areas of interaction.
Page 77
Samantha ScimĂŠ - Professional Portfolio
Most days in Florida are too hot for students to enjoy the outdoors. With this option bringing a grass texture infront of the curtain wall as well as a moss wall near the main entry allows an outdoor feel for every day.
Page 78
An Academic Break
This option embodies the same goals as the option to the left. The difference between the two are additional exterior spaces used. The client wanted variation in both design and existing program used.
Page 79
A FENCE FOR BEAUTY A new facade for an unsightly seen in the researching heart of campus.
The goal was to create a new facade behind the Engineering building. This area is crossed by many students during their commute to class so covering up the building services was of great importance.
Location: Engineering 1 UCF Main Campus Type: Service Yard

Due to the custom logo at the gate opening this option is slightly higher in price than option 1. To keep cost low, Option 2 also maintains the existing brick wall.
