I got the chance to interview Robin Harrison and Jack Alcock the founders of a new clothing brand OurKid Apparel based in Sheffield. Both young, graphic designers building a brand around screen printing, art and street style. I had a great laugh with the lads as they showed me round their studio and even let me have a go at printing my own tee, needless to say it wasnt quite OurKid standard so i thought i would leave the printing to them and got the tea and biscuits ready... And your fave piece in your wardrobe? R: My new ‘The Decades High Water Rescue 5 panel’ J: Mine would have to be the sample piece of one of our new SS13 products, it’s a vintage denim jacket with a custom back panel.

Have you seen any new exhibitions lately that you loved? R: I went to a exhibition at S1 Artspace the other day, but i did not really get the work. I really need to get to more exhibitions, just been too busy lately J: There’s a photographic piece by Dan Holdsworth in the Force of Nature exhibition at the Millennium Galleries in Sheffield that I keep going back to at the moment, it’s incredible.

How would you describe OurKid Apparel in 3 words... So to start off we want to know all about the OurKid Apparel founders R: Sheffield, DIY, Drink J: Agreed. and where you have sprung from? When and how did OurKid Apparel R: I am Robin and I have Sprung start? from Driffield, East Yorkshire. J: I’m Jack and i’ve sprung all the way up from the Somerset in sunny south west. I’ve been in Sheffield for nearly 6 years now.

What’s your fave song i-pod at the moment?

on

your

R: My song of choice at the moment is Chet Faker, No Diggity or any Dj Shadow. J: It varies hourly but i’ve been listening to George Ezra’s Breakaway recently, as well as having Biggie’s Ready To Die album on repeat.

07

R: Myself and Jack where coming back from a Ski and Snowboard comp in Edinburgh in a very hung over state on a coach and we just started to chat about how it is something we have both been wanting to do for a while now, after that we kept meeting up to discuss ideas about it. Then one day thought sod it lets do it. J: Yeah, basically. We both wanted to make clothing that we wanted to wear and to create something that had the potential to expand whilst we had complete creative control.

Explain the name, to me its perfect branding for a Yorkshire born label.. R: The name was Jacks idea, we had a list of. about 30 to 40 names, some really random and silly ones, but then jack said OurKid and it just seemed to fit with the look we where going for. J: It’s just a nice, endearing and simple term. It also connotes the blood, sweat and tears that have gone and will go into the brand.

your

R: Something that I feel makes our brand unique is we do everything ourselves from printing the t-shirts, to packaging and posting them. We try and give a family feel to everyone that buys anything we make. J: There are a lot of independent brands around, but i like to think that it’s unique because although we share loads of common interests we also both have very different sides to us. This stands out in the designs we each bring to the table.

What’s your favourite process in developing a new line? R: My favourite process of developing a new line, is definitely finding new ways of printing methods. At the moment we have just got a 6 arm carousel in, so I cannot wait to get printing with that. J: I love to take personal favourites from the circulating trends and put a very personalised spin on the designs. I really enjoy creating garments from existing pieces.

Who’s the creative one and who deals with the business side or do you both just get stuck into everything? R: We just get stuck into everything, however sometimes I have to help jack with illustrator work, as he is still getting used to the program. J: Yeah it’s mainly a 50-50 split, we just get things done, but there are areas that Robin is better in like the finer points of illustrator and there are areas that I’m better in like, spelling.

Do you aim your designs for menswear or do you try to make all your clothing unisex? R: We aim it to be all unisex, however as we are both male sometimes the designs can come across very masculine J: With the sort of fashion we’re interested in there aren’t many boundaries in that sense.

Are there any up and coming ideasor projects we can look out for? R: At the moment we are just in the middle of producing our SS13 range which is very exciting, also moving into a new studio, so juggling quite few things at the

moment. For our spring/summer range we are working with a leeds artist called Yasmina (http://www.yasmina. co.uk) which is going to be very fun. J: We’re really excited to be working with Yas and we’re also working closely with an NFP organisation called ‘Party for the people’ which is great.

For the ‘Urban Tour’ I got the chance to spend the day wandering around Amsterdam, I wasn’t sure what to expect as the stereotypical Brit, when I think of Amsterdam I think of the Red Light District and weed cafes - probably not what they would want their capital to be known for. Yet I was pleasantly surprised to find a mass of beautiful buildings, bright colours and lots and lots of bicycles. Riding a bicycle in Amsterdam is like taking the tube in

London, they are very traditional with bells and baskets- no breaks, to stop you have to pedal backwards. I found rows of parked bikes much nicer to look at than the concrete car parks we have. Everywhere was filled with

colour - bright graffiti, stalls, signs and of course street style. A big thing I noticed was men walking around in just two colours, matching their shoes with scarves and trousers. and the buildings are even colour

blocking. The music, loud crowds and street performers added to the colourful city, everything had a festival vibe and to top it of, in the cool autumn months the sun still shone. Written and photographed by Sam Howson

The Philosophy Book, Harold Koda & Andrew Bolton

Having studied philosophy through the medium of doorstep academic textbooks I was intrigued to find out how a book could summaries complex theories and ideas into bite size chunks effectively. My skepticism was proved presumptuous and unwarranted. Although not as in depth as other texts I have read on philosophy, it was not too brief to avoid the core questions and relevant arguments. Set out in a chronological format also adds to its user-friendly nature. I was able to dip in and out of it and jump between topics of interest without losing understanding or missing pieces of information. Despite its tricky and often daunting topic it was a light and entertaining read anfor those who are visual learners the clever cloud diagrams help to break down the process of learning. The main issue I had while studying philosophy was that although I understood the main arguments and ideas I found it very hard to explain them to other people. The Philosophy Book enabled me to both

The most enjoyable section, I found, was Contemporary Philosophy, particularly p298 ‘Knowledge is produced to be sold’. But that is just my personal preference. There are many different topics and something to suit everyone. Iwould definitely recommend to those who are just one of life’s thinkers. THE

CATWALK

Moschino Fall 2013. Milan The prevalence of menswear in the fashion domain must not be understated. The translation from catwalk to high street is thus essential. Fashion-forward men can rejoice with the knowledge that Moschino’s tartan themed range is a strong look being carried forward into Urban Outfitters. The strength of this look derived from the heavy tartan jackets and transcended to red tartan trousers. Despite the odd safety-pin dinner jackets, ‘wearability’ was key. Plaid suits and parkas, along with more tailored and traditional clothing were incredibly commercial. Even so, this is Moschino and there was a new take on formal. Multi-colour printed bomber jackets were worn over suits, renaissance printed jackets were paired with grid print scarfs Going against all the social norms, leather jackets .

15

were worn with printed formal trousers. Trousers presented the perfect palette for a play on block colouring, with vertical and horizontal stripes dominating the range. In all, this is a strong look. It is a twist on the classic silhouette, whether that be elasticated hems on trousers, or a tartan waistcoat under a white dinner jacket. Moschino have brought newness to tradition.

Chirstopher Kane Fall 2013. London Christopher Kane frequently signs, seals and delivers the most innovative collections of the season. The ‘Pop-Goth’ was the inspiration for his Autumn-Winter show. The perfect contrast between the effeminate man with the dark and sinister. Take for example, the skinny trousers, leopard and jaguar print clutch and scarf, and

the ultra-tailored silhouette. Then, pair it with Frankenstein, Dracula and ‘the Creature’ T-shirts, along with oversized and cape-like black military coats. It was a monster-mash, and cemented the Urban outfitters favourite printed T-shirt as this seasons must have trend. The predominant colour was black with pops of purple, electric blue and red. Texture was key, with applique, velvet, quilting and embroidery pushing the boundaries of men’s clothing. There was also a sense of paired back glamour, for instance, a boxy black quilted jacket with plush leather pockets, was worn with washed-out skinny jeans and velvet grandad loafers. Overall, Kane proved the malleability of the printed Tee - there was pop, goth and a little bit of glamour. written by Zoe Garton

FITZ

I got to hang out with Fitz during their gig at HMV Institute, Birmingham last month and before the gig they let me ask a few questions so we could get to know them ... Interview: Sam Howson Photographer: Eunice Cornejo Band Members: Sam Fitzpatrick, Joel Careless, Richard Potts and Benjamin Maines-Blatherwick

Introduce yourself, who’s who and who does what? Hello! My name is Sam and am the lead singer songwriter and guitarist, I’m Joel, and I play bass, electric guitar and generally just try to have a good ol’ jive. I’m Rich, I mainly play the banjo, and do some backing vocals, occasionally I play some harmonica, mandolin, percussion …basically whatever I can get my hands on. Last but not least I’m Ben and I play drums and percussion.

All the members of Fitz love OurKid apparel and we managed to get a snap of them all sporting their fave tees. Looking lovely, we must say!!! 21

What’s your favorite song on your I-pod at the moment? Rich My iPod is currently obsolete as Sam deleted my entire Itunes library without telling me, but online im listening to a lot of Johnny Cash’s ‘The Beast In Me’. Sam To Kill A King album too which is receiving a lot of my travelling time

On stage at HMV Institute, Birmingham

Ben I walk to Sam’s pretty much every day and From A Basement on The Hill by Elliott Smith is a good walking album. Joel It changes daily, but currently it’s probably Lost by Frank Ocean. What’s your fave film at the moment? Sam This a hard one as I watch a LOT of films, I’m a bit of a film addict, I love cinema. I have a particular soft spot for indie romantic films, recently we all watched a film called Cockney’s Versus Zombies, which is definitely not an indie romance but was staggeringly entertaining because of how ridiculous it was. Also because I’m about to move to east London where the film was based, and it didn’t exactly make me feel safe. Rich Moulin Rouge...Ewan is my dirty little pleasure Ben I have a thing for awful 80’s horror B-movies. The more ridiculous the better, like The Toxic Avenger Joel Favourite film is a tricky one, but I suppose I haven’t seen a film I’ve enjoyed more than Skyfall in quite some time. It feels like a pretty obvious choice really, but Bond in Britain did it for me. How did you start making music? Joel I think its pretty different for all of us but somewhere along the way someone or something just inspired us, a friend of ours played Basket Case by Green Day in assembly at school when I was like 12 years

old, and I immediately asked my parents for an electric guitar, and it all kind of escalated from there. I was lucky to have a lot of musical friends around me so pretty soon I started jamming with them and by the age of 15 it was pretty much all I wanted to do. Rich both my parents are musical, so there has always been music in the home for me Sam I had a 3/4 size classical guitar gifted to me for my 8th birthday and I never really stopped playing it, instead just progressed through different styles as I grew up through them. I started writing my own music in my teens, but that was emo/hardcore kind of stuff, although when I was at Uni, around 3 or 4 years ago, I began writing lyrics for the first time, and some of those are in the songs we play now. Ben When I was 11 my older brother was running percussion classes using wheely-bins, oil drums and old teachests as instruments. I thought I’d go down and see what it was all about, there were about 70 of us all playing bits of percussion, so it was pretty loud, and I haven’t really stopped since. What album are you working on at the minute? Sam It’s the debut, and its called Patchwork. It’s been a process that’s taken me 3 or 4 years, and was already recorded once. As we speak, I’m in the studio working on what will be the final version of the album with the guys, and a few guest musicians too. It will be released later this year, probably late July/ August time, and I can’t wait to get it out, as some of the songs have been with me for some time! What’s inspired this album? Rich Sam is probably the best one to answer that…just be careful… once he starts speaking about it he won’t stop haha. Sam There are all sorts of inspirations, mainly through experiencing things in life first hand, and of observations of friends and those closest to me. Usually depressing stuff too. There’s also inspiration from places I’ve visited, and views on the issues with our society - but this is mixed with dealing with loss and death, depression, and the resolve of these things. I write in a style that I like to think people can relate to, so I hope it doesn’t come across too self-indulgent, and that people can connect with it in some way. I always try and give a positive resolve to the depressing nature of my songs haha. I have tried writing happy, but it doesn’t sit right with me. What has been your proudest moment to date? Joel Id say we are all very proud of how far we have come in a year but

for me personally I would say playing at 2000 trees festival last Summer, a tent full of people singing back at us. That felt pretty special... I proceeded to get very drunk indeed after that. Rich and seeing the music videos when they are all complete; especially the ‘Making of’ video for Caves. The film crew we work with (Wind up World films) are ace, and it was really nice seeing our imagination come to life. Sam plus the live video for ‘Funeral’ we shot recently with friends of ours To Kill A King. It was a real honor to be involved, and it really marked what we’ve achieved in a year, and that hopefully there are some really good things to come in the next.

Sam Fitzpatrick

What is the ultimate dream? Sam Ahhhh the question of questions. My ultimate dream is to keep doing what we do, and for us all to be able to achieve some kind of financial stability doing it. But it would be nice if that included a performance on Jools Holland and a Mercury Prize nomination - I don’t mind not winning, but a nomination would be so so awesome! Rich Just to be happy…haha so cliché. Ben definitely just to keep doing what we are doing! Joel For me, it’s just to feel like my career in music was successful. To be able to look back on it all and feel satisfied with what we and I have achieved. Deep man. Describe what the bands like back stage? Rich We’re pretty chilled, as long as Ben has his drums set up, (he likes to be organised) then we’re just our normal selves. To be honest we’re rarely ever backstage, we like to meet and greet the people that have come out to see us, and it’s always a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and to make new ones Sam I get really nervous so I like to be able to get my head into the right state before we go on, and especially before a show, there’s no mad rock and roll clichés. However, post-show is a little different, and we don’t call him rock and roll Joel Careless for no reason. Joel Haha, we basically just make fun of each other Is there anything we should be looking out for? Sam We have an album headline tour coming up at the end of July/early August at awesome little venues, and it’s going to be really cool. We book all the supports ourselves too. This and obviously the release of the album. Joel video’s, video’s, video’s. We’re making a short film to run alongside the album, so that’s a big one for us. List three things you can’t live without? Sam Tea, Pastries, and people.

Los Mu ertos Sara Ellen Gray For any one staying in the South West of America or visiting Mexico at the end of Autumn, El Día de Los Muertos is not to be over-looked. Taking place over the 1st and 2nd of November, it celebrates our lost loved ones in a completely new and exciting way that retains dressing up in costumes but disposes of knocking on doors begging for sweets and threatening nasty pranks.

Yes,

anyone who has taken a good look into trends or simply done a substantial amount of people watching recently knows that the 90s have made a comeback into fashion. If people haven’t shopped a revival 90s wardrobe yet they are most certainly asking their elders if they kept any of their clothes. The new take on 90s style clothing is definitely an interesting one. The majority seems to be embracing his or her inner 90s childhood. Everything our parents would dress us in regardless of our disgusted looks and “Mum why did you dress me in that?” is back on the catwalks but this time top of our must have lists. Needless to say there are some heavily influenced trends, which are undeniable, not just for a 90s old school fancy dress

party. A unisex and versatile approach on fashion has been created. Men are taking a feminine jump into a brave breed of prints and top buttoned shirts. Girls are adopting a slightly more masculine look with baggy fits, bare midriffs and teen-agnsty slogans with the odd hair scrunchie keeping their ponytail in tact. Rather than anything else the 90s was intimately entwined with the music that swarmed that decade. Dressing down seems to be the new statement of dressing up; the power of casual dressing was fed through the 90s music charts. The music industry is one of the most influential parts of society. Run-DMC’s lyrics to My Adidas in 1986 resulted in the first corporate relationship

between hip-hop culture and consumer products, making sportswear a popular trend of its own, which is a leading trend amongst us this season. The electro house music is seemingly very popular at the minute, which like the 90s has influenced today’s fashion choices for both sexes. For the boys we are seeing a regeneration of sportswear being worn not for the gym but as outerwear instead. The revamped 90s trend of the 21st century has become a stereotyped look for house and tech beat lovers. A sea of neon coloured Nike and Adidas sneakers paired with you’re your Dad’s old sport shell jacket is what you should expect to see. Big shout out to everyone, keep your old clothes, the next generation will be needing them. Victoria Rose Cawkwell
