COMMUNICATION STUDIES

Why study with us?

Design your own research.

• Design your own research.

• Collaborate closely with our faculty of teacher-scholars.

• Contribute to an engaged and inclusive community.

Through the close study of communication, we empower our students to examine their various identities and the ideologies that impact them as they learn to resolve conflict and reach ethical decisions.

Prepare for a meaningful career. The ability to communicate clearly is invaluable in any profession. Many of our students become passionate educators, while others establish careers in public relations, marketing, social work, government or journalism, where critical thinking, inclusive communication and flexible problem-solving are essential. “The faculty are some of the most engaged and wellrounded scholars in their fields, but they are also some of the most genuine and interesting people in higher education. The communication studies department is not only a scholarly community, but a social one where students inevitably find a cohort that becomes like family.” - Neda Kikhia (B.A.)

Join a graduate program led by studentcentered faculty. Conduct research that you find personally and professionally fulfilling. Nearly all of our faculty have published or coauthored research with current or immediately graduated students. Among many projects, research from our department has:

• Investigated how communication creates identity in the family

• Evaluated how power is conveyed in public deliberation

• Asked how cultural memory influences debates over public education
