Signage Detail

Project Summary Site: Davis Bike Loop

Audience: Davis residents, bike enthusiasts

Goal: The goal of this project is to design a user-friendly sign system that makes navigating the Davis Bike Loop easier and a more fun experience.

Strategy: In order to create a user-friendly sign system focused on user experience and easier navigation, our sign system focuses on dividing the loop into districts by landmarks and highlighted nearby amenities, landmarks and wildlife. The interpretative signs highlight Davis’s history, landmarks, wildlife, and agricultural background. This focus on Davis’s agricultural background is reinforced in our color palette based on major crops grown in Davis such as tomatoes, corn, grapes, and blueberries. The bronze finish used throughout the sign system also reinforces the focus on Davis’s history since many historical signs use bronze.

3

Lookbook: Project Site The Davis Bike Loop goes around many community centered areas such as parks and community gardens. It passes through natural landscapes and wildlife habitats. This route has potential to bring the community together. It features landmarks that are created by community members like the bike tunnel murals, scupltures, and urban gardens.

4

Lookbook: Project Site

5

Lookbook: Project Site

The loop features a variety of sign types. However, there are not enough signs to help us navigate around and through the loop easily, causing us to get lost multiple times. Signage is made of various materials from aluminum to plastic, to even outdoor vinyl stickers applied to the ground. Many of the signs were not near a manmade light source, thus they are only illuminated by the sun or have a reflective coating on them to be more noticeable during the night.

6

Lookbook: Comparable Visual Identities When we were researching competing visual identities, we took notice of how the visual identities varied in form, application, and materials. We noticed how some would use stencils to temporarily paint their identities into the ground while others would take a more permanent approach by using mosaic to embed their designs into the ground. One group took a unique approach of using type and painting words instead of a graphical element. We also noticed how different groups would approach the standalone sign with varying materials and forms. Some would take the traditional rectangular metal or wooden sign route while others diverged by making a more vertical signpost. Many of the loops we found had a logo identity, but sometimes the branding was not consistent or did not relate to the loop’s wayfinding system. The main similarity that these different groups had in common was their decision to include a visual of a bike or bike associated objects such as bike gears.

7

Visual Identity: Logo Precedents Multiple logo designs were considered to represent the bike loop. Designs ranged from featuring bike parts like a chain link to a more abstract interpretation of a looping arrow.

Visual Identity: Final Logo

The final logo is a simple interpretation of a loop. It features colored circles that link to different colored circles, which reflects the connecting nature of the bike loop. The bike loop connects different areas or “districts” of Davis together and they are united through this loop. The logo represents this greater sense of connecting the city and community members together. Also the logo loop is formed to look like a lowercase “d” to reflect Davis’ first letter. The logo can be used alone as a mark or it can be accompanied with text “Davis Bike Loop”.

Visual Identity Color Palette

Typography

Colors are inspired by major crops grown in Davis, CA. The city grows a variety of crops such as tomatoes, corn, blueberries, and grapes for wine. The primary colors represent major crops. The secondary colors are lighter hues of the primary colors and are meant to be accent colors.

Type is optional with the logo mark. When type is accompanied with the logo mark, Montserrat Regular is used for “Davis” and Montserrat Bold is used for “Bike Loop”.

Best Practice

When we were researching best practice of different sign types, we took notice of material and form. We noticed how some companies took the typical rectangular shape of a sign and added their own twist such as cut out text or circular images. We paid attention to lighting and how some signs incorporated LED lights. We looked at the typical material used for exterior signage and were drawn to the material resembling bronze. Unique forms such as the leaves stood out for donor signs as well.

Arrows

Montserrat is the main typeface used in all signage. Memphis LT Std Bold can be used as a secondary typeface for more complex sign messages.

A system of pictograms was established to enhance wayfinding. Pictograms are used specifically for orientation and some directional signage when appropriate. all pictograms were created to reflect the round nature of the bike loop brand.

A rounded arrow will be used to represent direction on signage. Arrows have round edges similar to the pictograms.

Images

The logo can be used in various color applications depending on the base color of the signage. Logo will be engraved in most stand alone signage. It can also be printed in color or reverse color based on the signage color and what is most readable.

Images will mainly be applied to interpretive/ content signage as well as some celebratory/ promotional signage. They will be used to provide visuals and illustrate elaborate messages.

For materials, aluminum will be used for structures or signs and faux finished applied for the bronze texture for their durability in the outside environment. Coatings such as direct embed coatings which will be used for the content signs, anti graffiti coating, and UV protecting coating will also be used to protect the signage. Retro reflective panels will be used as well.

Preliminary Ideas & Sketches

It was essential to first define what each sign type was in order to design messages and forms. Preliminary sketches were based off of best practice examples and experimentations with different forms.

Let's make some happy little clouds in our world You can do anything your heart can imagine. We artists are a different breed of people. We're a happy bunch. The secret to doing anything is believing that you can do it. Anything that you believe you can do strong enough, you can do. Anything. As long as you believe. It's a super day, so why not make a beautiful sky? All you need to paint is a few tools, a little instruction, and a vision in your mind.
