I LAID OUT THE FACILITY WITHIN THE DESIGNATED EXISTING SPACE, DID ALL DESIGN AND MILLWORK DRAWINGS FOR INTERIOR CONSTRUCTION, SPECIFIED AND ORDERED MATERIALS, AND OVERSAW THAT THE DESIGN WAS FOLLOWED THROUGH THE CONSTRUCTION PHASES TO COMPLETION. THE DESIGN FEATURES MANY BACKLIT + REFLECTIVE ELEMENTS THAT KEEP IT FUN AND STIMULATING WHILE STAYING UPSCALE + HIP WITH CONTEMPORARY WALLCOVERING, TRENDY COLORS, AND CUSTOM ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES FOR THE YOUNG-ADULT CROWD THE CLIENT WISHES TO CATER TO.

WILDERNESS RESORT WISCONSON DELLS INDOOR FAMILY FUN RESORT 2011

EXPERIENTIAL DESIGN IS A MUST IN CREATING THEMED SPACES. WITHIN THE WILDERNESS RESORT I WANTED THE VISITORS TO FEEL LIKE THEY HAD ESCAPED THEIR EVERYDAY LIVES AND BEEN TRANSPORTED TO AN OLD FRONTIER TOWN IN THE WOODS. MATERIALITY IS A MAIN PROPONENT IN THE CREATION OF THIS ILLUSION, SO MUCH EFFORT WAS SPENT IN FINDING THE CORRECT WOOD PLANKING, METAL ROOFING, RUSTIC STONE, ETC. EVERYTHING MUST NOT ONLY APPEAR REAL, BUT FEEL REAL AS WELL. EACH THEMED PROJECT IS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE AS A DESIGNER, AS I MUST DELVE INTO EACH ERA, EXOTIC LOCATION, ENVIRONMENT, OR UNIVERSE TO NOT ONLY CONVINCE THE PERCEIVERS OF THIS BUILT ENVIRONMENT AS “REAL”, BUT MYSELF AS WELL.

CITY STEAM OASIS MANHATTAN, NY SENIOR THESIS PROJECT 2010

[CSO] : [C]ity [S]team [O]asis Winter 2010 Instructor: Vivian Lee Undergraduate Design Studio Wallenberg Competition Finalist

6WHDP STEAM 6HZHU SEWER

THIS MANHATTAN INFRASTRUCTURAL ARCHITECTURE AIMS TO SOLVE THE COMBINED SEWAGE OVERFLOW [CSO] PROBLEM THAT POLLUTES THE RIVERS SURROUNDING THE ISLAND. EXAMINING WHERE THE STEAM AND SEWER SYSTEMS OVERLAP AT THE WATERS’ EDGE NEAR A LARGE FLOW VOLUME CSO, THE SITE WAS CHOSEN ALONG THE EAST RIVER AT EAST 50TH ST AND THE FDR HIGHWAY. FURTHER SITE INVESTIGATION SHOWS THAT THERE IS NO DIRECT RIVER ACCESS AVAILABLE TO MANHATTANITES BECAUSE THE FDR DISSECTS THE CITY GRID FROM THE SHORELINE AND A 35 FOOT SECTIONAL CHANGE OCCURS ON THE SITE. THE ARCHITECTURAL INSERTION BRIDGES THE GAP FROM THE CITY TO THE WATER BY CROSSING OVER THE FDR, WHILE CLEANING THE RIVER USING THE UNWANTED SEWAGE OVERFLOW IN ADVANTAGEOUS WAYS: THE CSO SEWAGE IS CAPTURED BEFORE IT REACHES THE RIVER AND MICROBIAL TECHNOLOGY IS USED TO GENERATE ENERGY WHILE IT CLEANS AND RECYCLES THE WATER FROM THE SLUDGE. THE ENERGY AND FRESH WATER THAT IS CREATED FEEDS THE STEAM SYSTEM TO USE IN THE NEW EPHEMERAL URBAN PARK AND SPA AS WELL AS THE SURROUNDING BUILDINGS OF THE CITY THAT UTILIZE THE STEAM SYSTEM ALREADY.

LASER TAG ARENAS ARE A MAIN ATTRACTION WITHIN FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT CENTERS AND MANY CLIENTS WANT THEIR ARENA TO BE AS CUSTOM A DESIGN AS THE REST OF THEIR CENTER SO THAT EVERY ASPECT OF THE EXPERIENCE IS UNIQUE AND DRAWS THE CUSTOMER BACK FOR MORE. I LAYOUT THE FLOOR PLANS, DESIGN THE CENTER, AND RENDER A SNEAK PEAK OF WHAT THE FINAL CONSTRUCTION WILL LOOK LIKE.

NAMCO HAS ALWAYS BEEN AFFILIATED WITH “FUN” AND THEY ARE NOW BRANCHING OUT FROM THEIR VIDEO GAME ROOTS TO CREATE ARCADES , ENTERTAINMENT CENTERS, AND AMUSEMENT PARKS AROUND THE WORLD FOR THE FUN TO CONTINUE IN A DIFFERENT TYPE OF ENVIRONMENT. I HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO ASSIST IN THE DESIGN OF THEIR FUN ZONES. A FLOOR PLAN BASED ON THEIR NEEDS WAS DERIVED, AND SOME INITIAL RENDERINGS OF THE FEEL WERE CREATED TO PORTRAY THE CENTER AS A BRIGHT, STIMULATING, AND INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE FOR ALL AGES. THESE RENDERINGS WERE THE CENTRAL DISCUSSION PIECE IN THE CONFIGURATION OF WHAT NAMCO WISHES TO BECOME AS A BRAND AND HOW THEY WISH TO BE PERCEIVED IN THE PHYSICAL WORLD OF GAMING.
