BODONI APRIL 1798

HISTORY In 1798, Giambattista Bodoni (1740 –1813) created the typeface Bodoni. He is known as the founding father of the Modern typeface. Bodoni revival began in early twentieth century, because people start to like the thick and thin strokes. In 1926, the version released by Frankfurt-based type foundry, Bauresche Giesserei, is the most successful re-design. It is internationally known and available as “Bauer Bodoni” in digital format nowadays. Bauer Bodoni offers the most complete digital version of the Bodoni typeface. American graphic designers preferred the Bauer Bodoni over other versions. Another notable version is the one designed by Summer Stone for the International Typeface Corporation in 1994. The version was presented in the city of Parma to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Giambattista’s birth. This version became part of

TEXT AND DISPLAY TYPE BODONI: A MODERN SERIF

11pt/11pt The Bodoni™ font is a well known serif typeface series that has had a long history of interpretations by many design houses. The various font styles begin with Bodoni’s original Didone modern font in the late 1700s through to ATF’s American Revival in the early 1900s and into the digital age. The unbracketed serifs and even geometric styling has made this a popular font seen in almost every kind of typesetting situation, but well suited for title fonts.

It was first designed by Giambattisa Bodoni in 1798 and is generally considered a “transitional” font type. Bodoni was a prolific type font designer and this particular font was highly influenced by the work of John Baskerville, a designer whose work Bodoni followed. The font, with its highly recognizable centered “Q” tail and slight hook in the “J”, was widely accepted by printers and can be seen in a broad variety of publications since created in 1700’s.

11pt/12pt One of the earlier publications using Bodoni was Dante’s La Vita Nuova in 1925. A good example of the design capabilities is Chauncey H. Griffin’s Poster Bodoni™ used in neon signs and most recognizably in the poster for the movie and play Mama Mia! as well as the movie poster for Black Dahlia.

American Type Founders came out with a variant designed by Morris Fuller in 1909, followed by an italic and book version in 1910, italic and bold+italic in 1911, a bold shaded version in 1912 and shaded initials in 1914. These were followed by subsequent versions in 1915 through 1926 to create a fifteen variations of Bodoni.

11pt/13pt In advertising Bodoni has been used in many logos because of its classic style including Guerlain, Elizabeth Arden, Giorgio Armani and the classic “CK” for Calvin Klein. In magazine publications such as Harper’s Bazzar and the classic architecture magazine Metropolis both use Bodoni .

Variations on the Bodoni font have appeared in many places in the entertainment media including the cover slip for the single Britney Spears 3 was Bodoni Stn-Poster Italic as well as the show logo for The News Hour with Jim Lehr which is in Bodoni TS-Demi Bold.

“Plenty of whitespace and generous line spacing, and don’t make the type size too miserly. Then you will have a product for for a king.” - Giambattista Bodoni

BODONI vs. BAKERSVILLE Black solid: Bodoni 72 Book 250pt Red outline: Bakersville Book 250pt

The centered Bodoni tail is very round and ends abruptly. While Bakerville’s tail is curvy, elegant and contains more contrast in weight than Bodoni.

Bodoni’s serifs are slight;y tapered while Bakersville’s are more slanted.

When Bodoni was first created it took inspiration from Bakerville and Didot. While these designs were based on the same basic ideas. Their differences easily distinguish them from one another, including contrast in weights, serif style, ball terminalsand counter form. Bodonis fonts rae thought to be a hybrid of adaptions taken from both Didot and Bakerville.

The counters of Bodoni letterforms have more vertical stress than Bakersville, and the weight changes are more substansial.

Bodoni’s terminal is circular, called a ball, this is a defining feature of Bodoni. While Bakersville’s terminal is more subtle, but still not, the weight change is more gradual.

BODONI IN ADVERTISING Even though Bodoni was created in 1798 and origionally designed to be used in books, annnouncements, pamphlets and more. The style conveys galmour and elegance, making it a modern, fashionable and classic font all at once. The font is more as an art form rather than lettering for readability. The font is a combination of Bakersville and Didot, giving it’s geometric, light feel and classic serif. They were studied efforts to be seen as an art form, as opposed to soley a form of communication and lettering. Type Design had been relatively studied efforts to be seen as an art form, as opposed to solely a form of communication and lettering. Type design had been relatively standardized and had not deeply explored the form of the letters and how they sit on the page. Under Morris Fuller Benton’s watch, the American Type Founders Company was the first to modernly reinterpert and revive Bodoni’s for nearly the next century. Bodoni today is often used in advertising, posters, magzaines, covers, and other forms of media. Because of it’s sophisticated style with a modern twist, Bodoni is a popular typeface used amoungst the fashion industry. When you pick up any fashion magazine it is easy to spor Bodoni on the cover. Fashion magazines such as Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar and W. Along with numerous high end brands like Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Zara and Elizabeth Arden are good examples of Bodni seen in everyday life. Bodoni 12pt/12pt

Some digital verisons of Bodoni are said to be hard to read due to “dazzle” caused by the contrast in thick and thin strokes. More particularly the thin strokes, which are hard to read at small sizes. This is very common when optical sizes of font intended for use at display size are printed for text. Bodoni 72 Book Italic 11pt/12pt Although to a modern audience Bodoni is best known as the name of a typeface, Bodoni was an expert printer who ran a prestigous printing and showcased his designs on the metal casting, printing and of the paper made.
