I am an interior designer looking forward to beginning my professional career in the great state of Colorado. I have a passion for traveling and helping others and I enjoy experiencing different cultures. I often find design inspiration from other cultures and I love learning. I have an interest in historic preservation and sustainability and I strive to make the world a better place through design. I enjoy the creative problem solving aspect of interior design. PROJECT: Historic Preservation Adaptive Reuse

FURNITURE FLOOR PLAN

DOCUMENTS: Furniture Plan Renderings INDIVIDUAL PROJECT SQUARE FOOTAGE: 2,091 OBJECTIVE: Transform a historic building constructed in 1920 into a residential/commmercial space through adaptive reuse. The client, a history professor at the Univeristy of Northern Iowa, has requested to remodel the building without losing its historical charm.

SMOKESTACK

CONCEPT: Inspired by the rich history of the 1920s, I chose to design a speakeasy. It is inspired by prohibition era, in which America experienced large economic growth and newfound wealth. An open floorplan with VIP section as well as traditional seating has been provided. A selfie wall is included to encourage customer brand involvement, relationship, and promotion via social media posts.

RENDERINGS: If more privacy is desired, this enclosed corner space is the ideal retreat. Perfect for intimate conversations and moments with friends, this space offers a feeling of security with red velvet upholstered seating and warm neutral tones. Old newspaper clippings allow a glance back in time to prohibition era in its prime.

RENDERINGS: After walking through the secret passage bookcase doors, the speakeasy greets visitors with a large feauture wall designed to be used as a backdrop for guests and a marketing tool for the business. The Edison-style lights adorn the wall and trickle down for added lighting to achieve the perfect “selfie glow.” Vintage barrels can be found throughout the establishment as an added decorative element.

RENDERINGS: The central bar is constructed out of hammered copper and worn brick. The structural wood overhang above the bar is sectioned off and compartmentalizes the bar service area. A large mirror decorates the back bar wall and adds interest to the small space. Canned lighting directly above the shelving units creates depth and ambience.

RENDERINGS: An outdoor patio was created from leftover concrete wall and floor slabs from the 1920s. This space was originally the location of a greenhouse attached to a flower and gardening shop in the 1920s. Living plant walls and planters arranged throughout the patio act as an ode to the past. Covered seating allows guests to sit outdoors rain or shine while providing thermal comfort.

OBJECTIVE: Design an ADA accessible office boardroom using a historical design style of your choosing. Include conference seating for 16, waiting area, and coffee bar.

INSPIRATION IMAGES: CONCEPT: I was inspired by the geometric shapes and quirky patterns of the Charles & Ray Eames era. Bright pops of color and accessories encourage innovation & creativity.

PROJECT: Chair Construction DOCUMENTS: Preliminary concept sketches Completed product photography images INDIVIDUAL PROJECT OBJECTIVE: Design a full scale chair from scratch using alternative and/or sustainable materials. CONCEPT: For this project, I wanted to design a chair that reflected my passions and hobbies as an individual in a creative way. Traveling is one of my passions and I love discovering different parts of the world. I decided to upcycle a vintage suitcase rather than dispose of it. I drilled pillows into the interior of the suitcase, used button tufting, and upholstered the exterior of the suitcase with a screenprinted world map fabric. I added recycled post legs to the bottom as well as a wooden back support.

SQUARE FOOTAGE: 4,770 OBJECTIVE: Design and plan a LEED certified office space for a nonprofit organization. Client requests: print station, collaborative space, storage space, 2 executive offices, break area. This space must also be suited to house small community social events.

CONCEPT: Autism Speaks is a nonprofit organization that holds a special place in my heart. As a member of Alpha Xi Delta, I supported Autism Speaks during my entire collegiate experience through philanthropic events organized and hosted by my university chapter. I took inspiration from the puzzle piece logo and the organization’s official colors blue and yellow. The geometric shapes are symbolic of a puzzle piece. The way the elements are laid out brings the entire space together, similar to a puzzle when it is in its completed form. Herman Miller office furniture is exclusively used in all office and work systems.

REFLECTED CEILING PLAN In order to maximize the use of natural light and minimize the amount of artif icial light, curtain walls were incorporated into the conference room and break room to allow natural light to f ilter in and diffuse throughout the space. Pendant task lighting was installed in the small collaboration nook near the break room. Drop ceilings above the reception and workstation desks add interest and a pop of color.

PRELIMINARY PROCESS In order to satisfy all of the client’s needs in this project, diagrams were created to identify important adjacencies and proximities. The print station and storage space did not need to be immediately next to other spaces, and were placed based on amount of space left after major adjacencies were identified and situated. The conference room was determined to be the ‘heart’ of the organization and circulation and travel flow was centered around it. The overall space plan and design of this office building was heavily grounded in Evidence Based Design. EBD was used to uncover possible solutions to client problems and enhance the built environment.

RENDERINGS: The lobby and reception of the Autism Speaks corporate office welcomes visitors and employees with an abundance of natural light. Low VOC Patcraft carpet tiles and small wall planters were added to satisfy the LEED credit ‘Indoor Environmental Quality.’ The reception desk is constructed of bamboo, earning a ‘Materials And Resources’ LEED credit. The art piece on the wall was composed by a local artist with autism.

Due to the high level of employee collaboration Autism Speaks requires, the space was planned to utilize the open office concept. The building space previously existed, satisfying the ‘Materials and Resources’ LEED credit. The building is located in the heart of Chicago, enabling public and bicycle transit, thus satisfying the LEED credit: ‘Sustainable Sites.’ A ‘touchdown’ space is located near the open workstations for additional collaboration.

RENDERINGS: The collaboration nook was inspired by the living office trend in commercial design. Local artist work was used throughout the entire office. All artwork used was created by different artists on the Autism Spectrum. Globe pendants are specified for task lighting and different carpet tiles help with wayfinding, guiding those in the space through the space more easily.

RENDERINGS: The kitchen and break room is strongly influenced by ‘biophilia,’ meaning a love of nature. Bamboo and greenery are two key elements in this area. With views to nature from the kitchen and glass walls to diffuse natural light, this space emenates light and successfully blurs the line between indoors and outdoors. A low VOC LVT flooring was selected based on its durability and cleanibility. It also lightens up the space and keeps the natural look.

SQUARE FOOTAGE: 26,888 OBJECTIVE: Preserve the historic Wooten Hotel building shell and repurpose it into a Boutique Hotel and Restaurant based on the geographical location of Honolulu, Hawaii. Spaces to be designed include: lobby, restaurant, guest floor, and ballroom.

DUE TO THE GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION OF THIS BOUTIQUE HOTEL, THE CURRENT TREND: BLURRING THE LINES BETWEEN OUTDOORS AND INDOORS, WAS CHOSEN. THIS TREND WAS CHOSEN TO INVOKE A SENSE OF BEING CLOSE TO NATURE WITHIN THE USER AND TO IMPROVE MOOD THROUGH NATURAL LIGHTING AND BIOPHILIC COMPONENTS. DESIGN INTENT WILL BE FURTHER ILLUSTRATED THROUGH RENDERINGS INCLUDED IN THIS PROJECT.

INSPIRATIONAL IMAGES:

CONCEPT: Taking inspiration from the bright vibrant colors of Honolulu and the laid back island way of life, I chose to incorporate bright blues, greens, and pinks. Inspired by the unique culture of Hawaii and the breathtaking Hawaiian sunsets and beaches, I used warm tones of orange, brown, and beige. Locally available materials that are native to the Hawaiian Islands were also incorporated.

RESTAURANT FURNITURE PLAN The Shaka Shack is the bar and restaurant attached to the Pua ‘Ilima Boutique Hotel. The Shaka Shack design is rooted in the ancient and sacred Polynesian culture that has been present in the islands and its people for thousands of years. Inspiration is also taken from the strong presence of the sport of surfing on the island. The Shaka Shack serves traditional Polynesian and Japanese dishes with a signature Hawaiian twist.

The Shaka Shack Logo was created based on the theme of restaurant. The ‘ shaka’ sign, also known as the ‘hang loose’ sign, is a sign universally understood by surfers worldwide. It is a friendly gesture among surfers and is commonly associated with Hawaii surf culture. The Shaka Shack is known as a casual and friendly spot to stop by and experience great food and even greater atmosphere.


RENDERINGS: Porcelain tile floor was used to assist in temperature control because of its natural cooling abilities. A living plant wall complete with a two story waterfall can be seen behind the check-in counter. Structural columns are installed with water features on all sides. Different floor coverings distinguish waiting from circulation. Each sofa has a planter incorporated into its side. The lobby is meant to create the feeling of being close to nature.

The Pua ‘Ilima Boutique Hotel Logo was based off of the Pua ‘Ilima Flower, the official flower of the island, Oahu. Honolulu is the state capital of Hawaii and the largest city on the island. ‘E Komo Mai’ is Hawaiian for ‘Welcome Home.’

RENDERINGS: Shaka Shack is a vibrant and entertaining bar and grill. With plantlife everywhere, surfboard wallpaper lining the back walls, and tiki masks gazing down upon guests, it is inspired by a night out in Honolulu. Kirei board is applied to the bar counter as well as guest seating and tables. Coco tile is a recycled material. When applied to a surface, it acts as an acoustic barrier between the bar and the hotel lobby.

RENDERINGS: The guest room has a mix of neutral colors, textures, and prints. Bright pops of color are achieved through the use of artwork and accessories. This guest room is equipped with a platform bed with additional storage drawers underneath. The doors, columns, and furmiture pieces have a zebrawood finish. Coco tile is applied to the wall directly behind the guest bed for sound masking.

RENDERINGS: The ballroom is connected by double doors to a prefunction space on the second level of the hotel. Large scale patterned carpet tile in shades of blue and brown was chosen. Large picture windows with views to the ocean and chandelier ring fixtures provide ample light for the space. A bamboo ceiling finish adds warmth to the cool toned carpet tiles and coco tile is applied to columns and serves as a decorative and acoustic element. RENDERING OF BALLROOM

RENDERING OF EXCURSION ROOM LOUNGE

The excursion room is separate from the main hotel lobby. This room is where guests book offsite tours, day trips, and events to experience the lovely island of Oahu away from the hotel. A local artist was commissioned to paint the mural on the wall. The mural may also serve as a ‘selfie moment’ for tourists where they may have their photograph taken and uploaded to their social media. The publicity will stimulate brand awareness and set the Pua ‘Ilima Hotel apart from its competitors.

PROJECT: Multi-Family Adaptive Reuse

OBJECTIVE: Transform a historic vacant building into an artist residential community. This space will contain several makerspaces, as well as a gallery. The purpose of the gallery is to encourage community involvement and enrichment in the arts.

INSPIRATION IMAGES:

CONCEPT: This project was inspired by abstract geometric shapes and modern industrial design. Different size units, as well as an ADA accessible loft, are incorporated to promote inclusiveness. Lounge spaces ispire mingling and socializing amongst tenants.

RENDERINGS: ADA Acessible loft that includes hardwood flooring to accomodate to wheelchairs. The space is occupied by a local artist veteran. Large picture windows allow for ample natural lighting. Brick was preserved on the walls to keep the industrial look.

RENDERINGS: The painting studio is surrounded by glass walls. This allows artists to work without interuption, but still allows others passing through the halls to observe artist work. Concrete flooring is preserved f rom the building and allows artist paint accidents to turn into a work of art when they are spilled haphazardly across the floor.
