So much to see & do… The finest collection of American decorative arts outside the United States displayed in Period Rooms to illustrate how early Americans lived between the 17th and 19th centuries. Interactive galleries offering an introduction to American history. Objects on display include Native American, Slavery, and Civil War related items. Outstanding Dallas Pratt collection of maps. Internationally-renowned collection of American quilts. Most significant collection of American folk art in Europe. Over 30 acres of spectacular grounds.
Café offering light lunches, tea, coffee, cakes, and American cookies. Picnic area with undercover benches. Shops selling a range of gifts and souvenirs. All Museum buildings are fully accessible (garden access restricted) with designated parking and an adapted WC. Well-behaved dogs, on a lead, are welcome in the Museum grounds. The Colourful World of Kaffe Fassett
22 March – 2 November 2014
World-renowned knitwear and textile designer Kaffe Fassett celebrates his 50 year-long association with the American Museum, which began with a series of drawings he made of our Period Rooms in 1964. This retrospective exhibition showcases how Kaffe lives by his maxim to find colour in a grey world. Designed by theatrical designer Johan Engels, the exhibition is as colourful as the dazzling pieces on display. Over 100 sumptuous works of textile art from Kaffe’s personal collection are on view, offering a glimpse of the private man behind the public façade.
