01 Land Art Biennale. Fort Collins, CO. 2016 University of Colorado Denver In teams of two, eight pavilions were designed for the Biennale. Students explored context in relationship to site, pavilion, and art. Issues of authenticity and spectacle played a role in determining what site and context were historically and in the present. This analysis influenced the architectural meaning on the individual pavilion and master plan scale to guide the intentions of the human experience.

02 Site Specific Artworks. Fort Collins, CO. 2016 University of Colorado Denver In addition to the eight pavilions, each team proposed four Land Art Installations for the Biennale. Three works were inspired by ideas and methodologies of notable artists while the fourth proposal was an original work in attempts to construct and respond to cultural and physical contexts of the site. This resulted in 32 site specific works interspersed between the eight pavilions.


Water without Adams. Inspired by Lizzie Buckmaster Dove. The “Dam” is a glass box filled with water taken from the distribution system before Adams Tunnel, the main gateway leading to Horsetooth Reservoir. This recontextualization leads to thoughtful consideration of the site’s connectivity to the larger context and the continuum of the present’s existence with the past in forming Fort Collins and the water system.


A Line in Colorado. Inspired by Richard Long. This piece falls in line with several other elements in and beyond the site inviting visitors to imagine the extents that tie the site to the larger context. It is grounded in a degree of evasiveness and ambiguity rather than simplicity or even “nature.� The work requires a recognition of physical human intervention on the site and a passage of time as Richard Long returns intermittently to walk the line over the course of three years.

Inspired by Walter De Maria. In completing De Maria’s bronze Kilometer series, Negative Kilometer showcases the unit as a distance combining the methodologies of the two prior pieces. A visual connection between the bronze walls implies the imagined kilometer while a participant’s steps from one of the walls to the other, over the course of the kilometer long walk, makes the invisible unit understandable as a passage of time and as a regulated, divisible order.

Disposition. Original by Andrew Schrag + Samantha Strang. As the shadows shift throughout the day the passage of time becomes evident, and a temporal phenomenological experience can be perceived. The work allows a contemplation of the self in connection to the site otherwise incomprehensible with an experiential relationship of scale and materialilty.

The pavilions and works of art are sited in response to collective discussion about the site, each pavilion team’s examination of context, and their project intentions. Circulation for pedestrians, bicycles, vehicles, and carts have been modified from the current site conditions.

03 Colorado Outward Bound School Year Round Micro-Cabins. Leadville, CO. 2016 University of Colorado Denver Design Build Program, ColoradoBuildingWorkshop Seven 200 square foot cabins were designed and built by 28 students in teams of four; deep within a lodgepole pine forest, 10,000 feet above sea level. Students conducted an inquiry into materiality, structure, light, context, environment, and program to create solutions to prefabricated, acceleratedbuild, micro housing. The flat roof holds snow in the winter for an additional R-30 insulation.

Private “compressed� decks are for introverted senior outward bound guides.

Hot rolled steel cladding is used as a rainscreen to protect the cabins with cedar reveals. The cabin interiors are skinned in birch plywood bringing warmth to the structure and evoking a connection with the trees surrounding the site. Vertical columns of the moment frame below blend with the pine forest, minimizing the visual impact while providing under cabin storage.

Pella operable windows were selected and custom 3MVHB taped glazing at all fixed windows. A steel sub-frame using moment connections supports the structurally insulated panel frame utilizing the structure that already exists in the SIP to carry the load.

With an average annual temperature of 35o Fahrenheit, the seven all-season structures were required to meet the standards of the International Energy Conservation Code climate zone 7&8 (the coldest zone in the United States). Inspired by quinzees, a snow shelter made from a hollowed out pile of snow, the students adapted the logic of "snow insulation" for their structures.

04 Well-being Education Node. Sun Valley, CO. 2015 University of Colorado Denver. After thorough site analysis, the team master plan proposal intent was to create a neighborhood identity through overlap and dynamic programmatic coupling. This resulted in five major zones of live-work, live-learn, residential, education, and industry. Three performance nodes activate the neighborhood beginning to blend surrounding zones with varying layers of density.

Form

Programmatic Pairings. Three programmatic pairings define the project joining a community service with an educational activity. The education focuses around social, intellectual, and physical well-being. The pairings are determined by examining how services and activities architecturally use space in a similar manner. The third pairing serves as flex spaces for meetings to sectionally connect the levels and bring the entire architectural composition together. All pairings are intended to remove the stigma associated with needing access to services.

Methodology. Directional Forms. The positioning of the library-laundromat ground level redirects the approaching pedestrian-bike path. This ushers visitors to the other education-based buildings, zoned during the master planning phase. The southern exposed running track vertically connects the people below with the building programs above while the landmassing draws in the community and provides a means of secondary egress and entry to the operations occuring on the second and third levels.


Slicing + Connectivity. The mesh skin system on the facade permits ample light into the building while creating the perception of a solid, opaque form during the day. Inversely at night, the building glows from within revealing the inner workings of the facility. Operable windows function between the skin system and the building structure. This permits the more complex geometry of the building to read as one cohesive form with only the track slicing the facade.


Eisenman + MVRDV Domestic Hybrid.


05 Domesticity. Sloans Lake, Denver, CO. 2015 University of Colorado Denver To begin, the program, circulation, spatial hierarchy, and enclosure of MVRDV’s Double House was analyzed. Simultaneously, in-depth research was conducted on the client, Peter Eisenman, focusing on his design theory, methodology, personal life, and approach to architectural domesticity. The analysis from both precedents provided conceptual background for the design.

Organizing Circulation. Voids surrounding the stacked volumes enforce the connectivity between levels as light begins to filter through those voids and penetrate the different horizontal programs. Within the form, the continuous radial circulation becomes the driving force for organization and use of the space. Its importance is highlighted within the form and skin of the building, the grid system, and the layout of the interior space and volumes.



Intent. Opposition. The volume of the building reads as a form folding in upon itself with stacked programs providing vertical and sectional connectivity to the spaces. This creates movement, a sense of compression and release, and shifts the importance of the void over the solid.

Fragmentation + Offset. The house features a gradual rupture of the organizing 5’x5’ grid with the exterior completely adhering to the grid followed by the main interior elements shifting slightly off the grid. The structural columns, utilizing a web of connctions within the ceiling/roof to the exterior walls, completely break the grid. The project is a layering of information that continuously breaks down.



Clancy Residence.


06 Project Manager + Technical Designer. San Francisco, CA. 2015 Poggenpohl U.S., Inc. As the focal point of the home, the kitchen required considerable detail in all the unique customizations. Working closely with the local fabrication shop, we designed a countertop detail that achieved the clean look the client and principal sales designer desired while being mindful of the limitations of the material and shop. Intent. Balance + Focus. An embedded steel structure was required within the unsupported span of the countertop, increasing the overall thickness. A custom beveled edge detail was developed to lighten the perceptual weight of the material.

Emarlou Residence.


07 Project Manager + Technical Designer. Los Gatos, CA. 2011-2012 Poggenpohl U.S., Inc. Prior to installation, several revisions were conducted regarding the skeletal structure needed to support the island column panels. The final design, built on site, resulted in a number of groupings to allow disassembly of only portions of the column if any panels ever need replaced with considerable attention directed to keeping all fasteners hidden between panel reveals.



Intent. Movement. + Tension. Continuous horizontal and vertical 3mm reveals carry the occupant’s eye throughout the space while organizing the overall design. The visually lighter glass display box offsets the heavy lacquer panels and overhead span.
