MESSAGETHE FROM

VICE PRESIDENT

This summer issue is dedicated to all of you who work so hard to enhance the Northwestern experience for our students. Our academic year ended with Commencement and I was truly honored to see so many staff members from multiple departments contributing to our most important university event in a positive and meaningful way.

On June 28th we celebrated and recognized a great number of you for your expertise specific to our values here in Student Affairs: Integrity, Social Justice, Stewardship, Collaboration, and Innovation. Another group of you were selected for your Commitment to Excellence. In addition, we are truly fortunate to have among us a finalist for NU Employee of the Year. The recipients and selected staff are highlighted on the pages which follow and I hope you will take the time to congratulate them when you meet face to face. Our work together continues to move us forward as we strive to achieve the best for the division and this campus. I am grateful for your dedication and commitment and I hope you take some time to rest and recharge. Our best days are ahead of us. You will receive a message very soon about our Student Affairs Staff kickoff which will take place at the Norris Center on October 2nd. This event is held for all staff to gather and prepare for the new academic year. I look forward to seeing you very soon! Best wishes,

Patricia Telles-Irvin 3

NEW STUDENT AND FAMILY PROGRAMS

PURPLE PRIDE The day after students move into their residences on campus, Wildcat Welcome will begin with the traditional “March Through the Arch” ceremony. Purple Pride, our newest event, will follow shortly thereafter. The Class of 2017 and new transfer students will spend much of Tuesday, September 17 at Millennium Park in downtown Chicago. Our desired objectives for this event include the creation of community among new students, learn about the history of Northwestern, and to become familiar with campus traditions and spirit.

We are collaborating with University Relations, Athletics, the Office of Alumni Relations, and a nationally recognized company to facilitate community building. We anticipate a successful program as a result of these partnerships.

FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE

The Office of New Student and Family Programs will introduce “The First Year Experience” to the campus community in September 2013. This new program will provide students with important knowledge during Wildcat Welcome and encourage ongoing conversation throughout the year which will aid their transition to Northwestern. Included on the agenda is a pilot program for 500 new students. Requirements for participation include a mix of small group and large group activities/ events such as a theater performance, visiting lecturer or a cultural event.

HEALTH PROMOTION AND WELLNESS NEWS

RESIDENTIAL SERVICES

Eva Ball and Lisa Currie have been accepted to the Advocacy Learning Center, an 18-month course for survivor advocacy programs. Praxis International coordinates the Advocacy Learning Center in partnership with the Office on Violence Against Women, which provides grant funding for the Center for Awareness, Response, and Education (CARE) and other NU sexual violence response and prevention programs. The Advocacy Learning Center was created to improve the capacity of advocates to be a powerful force in the movement to end violence against women. It builds knowledge and skills for effective, high-quality individual, institutional, and community advocacy on behalf of women and survivors of all forms of violence against women. Eva and Lisa will be participating as a team in organizational self-assessments, in-person trainings in the Twin Cities, distance learning, and site visits to create structural change in NU’s advocacy programs.  Eva and Lisa are really excited about this unique opportunity, and look forward to sharing knowledge with Campus Coalition on Sexual Violence (CCSV) members! Lance Watson recently co-authored a published piece in the ACUHO-I Journal. Please see attached link: www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/acuho/ journal_vol39no2/#/216

WHATEVER THE TECH YOU WANT

Northwestern University Student Affairs hosted the #satechchi unconference at Norris University Center. Northwestern was only one of 12 sites in the world hosting a #satech unconference this year. The #satech unconference model is supported by both ACPA and NASPA, and those sessions have been adopted in majority of our national and international student affairs conference models. Unconferences are guided by participant brainstorming and voting on topics before the conference and in real time as the conversations get started. There are no prepared sessions in advance, so the mix of participants who chose to attend a topic they voted on helped to lead the session all together. #satechchi (Student Affairs Tech Chicago) hosted close to 100 student affairs professionals from 19 institutions and saw 1,217 tweets on Twitter using the #satchchi hashtag. The unconference kicked off with a keynote by Dr. Karl Stolley from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Dr. Stolley challenged the participants to think about the use of technology as combined with student development as “equitable, flexible, and error-tolerant” with his talk titled, “Threshold Concepts, Accessibility, and Student Development.” For more about the unconference, see the tweets for #satechchi, and to read the keynote slides, visit ks4.us/satechchi. Many thanks to nuCuisine for their role as partners and full sponsors of this special Northwestern University event. Thanks to Steve Mangan, Eddie Skidmore, Grace Everett, and Brian Wagner for their work with the meals. Their combined creative approach enhanced these catered events which featured technology with food. From liquid popcorn to smoking salads, the technology-inspired edibles were on point with the theme of the conference, “Whatever the Tech You Want.” Big thanks to James McHaley and Cory Phare for their leadership of the unconference. Appreciation goes to members of the Student Affairs team who attended the conference, and those on the planning committee, including Charles Kellom, Michael McKean, Jim Roberts, Kelly Schaefer, Andy Smirga, and our social media expert, student Lucas Matney. 10
