BRIDGING Professor: Jane Murphy Place: London Competition: Gui Competition The Library is located in the More London district situating itself in Potters Fields Park. It serves the community as a public building and gives access to the Thames River. The project respects the previous circulation of the site allowing visitors to experience the library even when only passing by. The ideas of isolation and bridging were used in order to allow access in between and across buildings while still allowing the library to operate as one individual project. Some bridges and terraces act as green roofs to replace the previous greenery taken away from the site.

The previous circulation of the site breaks the building into three pieces acting as private, public, and the main library. In order to operate as a single project, bridges have been added to reestablish the connection allowing for circulation or an extension of program. Adjustments to each buildings height have been arranged to allow for views of London across Thames River.

VOID And VOLUME Professor: Kristy Balliot Place: Columbus, Ohio The Art Gallery is positioned on a site off of Broad Street, contributing to the development of the Art District in downtown Columbus. This project takes into consideration lighting conditions and strategies used for moving it’s visitors through gallery space. In order to do so, the ideas of voids and volumes have been established to create unique views and experiences for visitors. While focusing on the gallery space, the project also holds space for classrooms, a cafe, a courtyard for enjoyability and performances, and apartment style studios for practicing artists.

Three geometric volumes are arranged to create a courtyard that is enclosed by the Art Gallery but yet still welcomes the public. Through the operations of distorting and repositioning, these three volumes were multiplied and then placed inside of the neighboring volume as a void forming an occupiable relationship between mass and volume. These three volumes are then connected creating a seamless flow from point A to point B.

LITERAL & FIGURAL Professor: Zach Snyder Place: Cincinnati, Ohio Competition: Concrete Masonry Block Foundation The Brewery locates itself in the OverThe-Rhine neighborhood of Cincinnati next to Findlay Market. Once a booming neighborhood, this historic district has since become abandoned and uncared for. This project is an addition that will help with the current renovation of the neighborhood. The project deals with the implications of a bar both literally and figuratively. The Brewery itself contains a bar that will liven the neighborhood for occupants, as well as containing a large “bar volume that reestablishes the connection between sections of the building that have slipped passed one another.

PAGE 25
With the addition of the “bar, the once separated spaces now have a shared relationship. It opens up the space and acts as the main area for circulation from one place to another. A pathway is also added to the project that acts as an object that has slipped passed certain sections of the building and sliced off others. This path allows for a connection between the Brewery and Findlay Market.

VOLUME Professor: Kristy Balliot Place: Columbus, Ohio With the redevelopment of a few dorms on the college campus, a new fitness center was created in order to bring a stronger presence to the edge of Lane Avenue. This project responds to the redevelopment by it’s form and expressive angles. The fitness center allows for the circulation of students through the outline of the facility without interrupting the flow of those who are participating in physical activity.

The form of the fitness center is angled in order to give students covered access traveling from campus to Lane Avenue. The form consist of three unique geometries that are combined, through the process of overlapping, to create a single volume. The floors are carved away in order to create an atrium to allow views from the top floor down and from the bottom floor up.

SURFACE And VOLUME Professor: Michael Baumberger The idea of the Bird House is also an idea about volume and surface. A spherical geometry was chosen in order to develop a Purple Martin Colony to study the relationship achieved between volume and surface through a boolean union process. The colony consist of six units, arranged to meet each other adjacently. Once arranged, they are then unioned to create a single volume shared by each individual unit.

CONSTRUCTION AESTHETICS Professor: Keoni Fleming Collaborators: Jay Schlesinger The task was to create a thirty inch tall pedestal that could hold a bottle of water. The team went about this project by combining materials of: wire, acrylic, steel, concrete, and MDF. The design is simple, combining the materials efficiently to create a pedestal that is contemporary and aesthetically pleasing. Adjustable steel bars reach up from the concrete base to act as a placeholder for the acrylic. The secured red acrylic catches the viewers eyes making the pedestal appear to be both elegant and vibrant.
