pafiliwn pensaerniaeth [architecture pavilion] The Architecture Pavilion draws from evolved architectural forms found in Welsh Nonconformist chapels and meeting houses. At its heart is an intimate place for people to meet and share ideas around a hearth. The pavilion articulates both the forms of Chair and Crown that have been central to the traditions of the National Eisteddfod of Wales. The pavilion’s design and scale offers opportunities for communal celebration as well as individual reflection. The base and lower walls are assembled from solid timber panels, whilst the upper level is framed with standardised timber sections, dressed with canvas. In daylight the interior has a tent-like luminosity. From dusk interior light permeates from within, lending the pavilion a lantern-like glow.

Chairing of the Bard.

Crowning of the Bard.

The pavilion interior is reminiscent of local Calvinistic Methodist Chapel, Resolven, Glamorgan. Ecclesiastical in character and mood, it is a place for cloistered discussion between individuals and within small groups.

The pavilion chairs define small-scale places within the festival field. Visitors can retreat to exterior alcove seating, or gather within the interior, to share ideas and discuss the exhibited works.

The pavilion gallery and terrace are elevated places where visitors can enjoy broad views of the crowded landscape below.
