Ga i e child Hop e Making better HIV medicines for children At the Institute of Pharmaceutical Innovation, in conjunction with our global partners, we are looking to develop simple, robust, flexible and cost effective solutions to make HIV paediatric medicines more child friendly. Current HIV medicines are not suitable for a number of reasons: • Format - liquid formulation makes administration impractical • Dosing - needed from 6 to 8 times a day which proves not only impractical but also especially difficult to control in usually crowded orphanages • Stability issues - medicines need to be kept at 20°C - in Africa and Far East temperatures are around 30°C and 40°C, with no access to electricity in remotes areas to keep medication cool in fridges Our solution will provide the following advantages: • better tasting medicine for easier administration • flexible dosing system through the implementation of an all-inone drug dispensing unit containing HIV medication in the form of granules which will enable practical administration and dosing • once or twice daily administration • stable product - shelf life 2-3 years • packaging can be adjusted to provide different dose combinations • reduced storage requirements • easily distributed through mobile and semi-mobile HIV health clinics in order to provide greater reach of treatment
