Fletcher
Franklin
One of the more secluded towns in Franklin County, Fletcher is tucked away from the county’s major thoroughfares, save for a small section of Route 108 that runs through the town’s eastern edge. Natural resources make Fletcher a quiet destination for lovers of the outdoors, with both Metcalf Pond and a trail head for the statewide Vermont Association of Snow Travelers snowmobile trail network.
Located along Route 120, Franklin shares its northern border with Canada and is home to Lake Carmi, Vermont’s fourth largest natural lake. More than 200 summer camps line the shore of the lake, along with a Vermont State Park. In late winter, hundreds of locals and visitors turn out annually for the Franklin Volunteer Fire Department’s pancake breakfast fundraiser. Lake Carmi State Park

There is no place in Franklin County where history runs as deep and strong as in Swanton, home of the Missisquoi Abenaki people. Located in Swanton is the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge, a nearly 7,000-acre refuge made up of a delta created by the Missisquoi River as it flows into Lake Champlain. While in town during the warmer months of the year, keep an eye out for the swans on the town green, from which the town gets its name.

our neighbors
Grand Isle County Made up of four islands and a peninsula on Lake Champlain, Grand Isle County is Franklin County’s western neighbor. From north to south, the towns of the county are Alburgh, Isle La Motte, North Hero, Grand Isle, and South Hero. Summer is a booming season for the county, when second-home owners, campers, and tourists abound. Autumn brings the apple harvest to the county, which is home to three large orchards. www.champlainislands.com
Northern Chittenden County To Franklin County’s south is Chittenden County, which counts among its municipalities Vermont’s largest city, Burlington. Abutting Franklin County are the Chittenden County towns of Milton and Westford. At one time primarily a farming town, Milton has transitioned to being a growing bedroom community in close proximity to IBM and other nearby industry. Westford is a largely rural town that offers scenic drives and several working farms.
Northwestern Lamoille County Southeast of Franklin County is Lamoille County, perhaps best known as being the home of two ski resorts, Smugglers Notch and Stowe Mountain Resort. Sharing a border with Franklin County are the towns of Belvidere, Waterville, and Cambridge (where Smugglers Notch is located). Belvidere and Waterville are both small, rustic towns with small populations, while Cambridge attracts a larger population thanks to its proximity to Mount Mansfield. Just east of Cambridge is Johnson, a town made up of locals, an arts community, and the school-year population of Johnson State College. Photos by David Juaire
26
Western Orleans County Vermont’s fabled Northeast Kingdom bumps up against Franklin County’s northeastern border in the form of Jay and Westfield, two Orleans County towns. Jay is home to Jay Peak, a ski mountain whose peak offers a grand view of Franklin County and Lake Champlain. Jay Peak Resort has grown significantly in Photo by Stina Booth recent years, and its most recent addition – an indoor waterpark – has made Jay a year-round destination in a way it’s never been. Westfield is a rural town that serves as home to Hazen’s Notch, a mountain pass that is open seasonally.
Southern BromeMissisquoi Regional County Municipality Popping over to another country for a weekend – or even for a couple hours for a coffee and a leisurely drive – isn’t a big deal in Franklin County. With Canada just minutes to the north – the French-speaking Montréal, Québec (Stock) province of Québec, at that – it’s not difficult to find yourself surrounded by a different cultural atmosphere. From west to east along the Franklin County (U.S.)/Canadian border are the Canadian municipalities of Bedford, Dunham & Sutton. Roughly an hour from the border is the major city of Montréal. All you need to do is bring your passport (or enhanced license), and you’ll be on your way.

directions
How to Get Here Located in the northwest corner of Vermont and with major north/south and west/east routes running through it, Franklin County is easily accessible from all directions.
From the West
From the East
If you’re coming from northern New York State or northern Grand Isle County, the only way into Franklin County is via Route 2 to Route 78. Just go south on Route 2 to the intersection with Route 78 in Alburgh. From there, head east on Route 78, cross the Missisquoi Bay Bridge, and you’ll be in Franklin County.
Should you come to Franklin County from the Newport or Jay region, the best yearround option for getting here is to take Route 105 west into Richford. During the nonwinter months, Route 242 will bring you into Montgomery. However, this road is closed in the Hazen’s Notch area during winter.
From the North
From the South
If you’re traveling to Franklin County from Canada, there are four primary ports of entry into the area. On the western side of the county, coming south from Philipsburg, Autoroute 35 brings you to Interstate 89, while Autoroute 235 from Bedford places you at Morse’s Line in Franklin. Further east, Autoroute 237 out of Frelighsburg finds you in Berkshire on Route 108. Finally, on the eastern edge of Franklin County, Autoroute 139 out of Abercorn brings you to Province St. in Richford, which is a short distance from Route 105.
If you find yourself coming to Franklin County from points south in Vermont, there are three primary ways to get here. The first is Interstate 89 North, which enters western Franklin County in Georgia and includes two exits in St. Albans Town, one exit in Swanton, and another in Highgate. From there, the interstate leads to the U.S./Canadian border crossing. Running parallel to I-89 is Route 7, which passes through St. Albans City. Travelers can enter eastern Franklin County via Route 108, which leads into Bakersfield from Cambridge. Please note that Route 108 passes through the high elevation Smugglers Notch region, and a portion of this road is closed during the winter months.

St. Albans Historical Museum volunteers and re-enactors will be on hand to discuss the famous St. Albans Raid of October 19, 1864, as well as plans for the 150th anniversary reenactment and related events set for September 18-21, 2014. Learn more about the Civil War period from living-history re-enactors, both military and civilian. Enjoy shopping at adjacent downtown shops and meals at restaurants – all in close proximity. Visit vendors all weekend and the large Northwest Farmers’ Market on the park on Saturday.

The St. Albans Historical Museum, located just steps from the center of the action, will be open all weekend and offers an impressive collection of historical artifacts – an interesting and educational opportunity for people of all ages. From here, take a walking tour of nearly 60 historical sites, including places and buildings that were integral to the Confederate soldiers’ raid on St. Albans and robbing of its banks. Creating a
stronger community one person at a time.
There are eight stages of development during a person’s life.* The life cycle begins with the infant stage and progresses to toddler/early childhood, followed by the preschooler and school-aged child stages, growing into adolescents then transitioning into young adult, followed by middle-age adult and finally, the older adult stage. Each stage of development is marked by conflict for which a successful resolution will result in a favorable outcome. No matter what stage of development someone is in, it’s comforting to know that you can turn to Northwestern Counseling & Support Services (NCSS) in your time of need. NCSS provides intervention and a continuum of support to individuals experiencing emotional and behavioral problems, mental illness and developmental disabilities. * According to Erik Erikson (1902-1994), a noted Danish-German-American developmental psychologist, every person must pass through a series of eight interrelated stages over the entire life cycle.
