The raid lives once more! Watch as rebel infiltrators spring into action,

take civilians hostage, attempt arson, fire guns and, yes, rob three banks. The drama unfolds right on downtown Taylor Park, which was at the center of the actual 1864 raid. The action, including mounted raiders and a posse in their pursuit, will be simulcast on a giant television screen. Have a nose for truly unique experiences? You’ll want to be in St. Albans for this Vermont Chamber of Commerce Top 10 Fall Event for 2014 -especially for the exciting re-enactments of the northernmost land action of the American Civil War. Civil War re-enactors will man Union and Confederate encampments and provide living-history interactions and educational demonstrations -- booming artillery among them. Ranked as Vermont’s “Most Significant Civil War Event of 2014,” this large and highly anticipated event also features a Civil War costume ball. The renowned 2nd South Carolina String Band will provide toe-tapping Civil War era music for the dance and in the park as well. There will be authentic period clothing and cuisine, 1860’s children’s games, antique and quilt show, lectures, and the St. Albans Raid Half-Marathon in which runners follow the bandits’ actual escape route. Also enjoy historical walking tours, additional musical entertainment, area lawyers presenting re-enactments of the raiders’ trial, an 1860’s church service, and more.

St. Albans is both historic and modern. It offers the fascinating collections of the St. Albans Historical Museum, which overlooks a newly refurbished downtown streetscape lined with fine eateries and unique shops. The re-enactments and most events are free. Free off-site parking (right off Interstate 89, exit 19) comes with shuttle service to and from the event. The St. Albans Raid Commemoration Committee and Champlain Valley Historical Re-enactors are event organizers. Legacy sponsors are the Peoples Trust Company and Rotary Club of St. Albans. Bakersfield

Berkshire

Chartered in 1791, Bakersfield, which is located on Routes 105 and 36, borders five Franklin County towns. Although very rural, this town is a gateway to Lamoille County and the Smugglers’ Notch region. Bakersfield is rich in its historic value, having over 100 public buildings, houses and barns listed on the state’s register of historic places. Just after the Civil war there were a multitude of dairy farms, but now only 5 remain – but the recent trend of organic and locally grown foods has shed a new light on farming in this town.

Nestled along the U.S./Canadian border, Berkshire can be found by taking a scenic drive on Route 118 north from Montgomery, from the Smuggler’s Notch area by heading north on Route 108, which runs through Bakersfield and Enosburgh, or from St. Albans on Route 105 – or via the Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail on bicycles! Enosburgh, located near the heart of Franklin County holds plenty of surprises. Often referred to as the Dairy Capital, Enosburgh is home to the Vermont Dairy Festival. It is also where you find the Opera House of Enosburg Falls, a historic venue that features some of the best in local talent. The Mississquoi Valley Rail Trail passes through Enosburgh and right into downtown. Historic building, homes, waterfalls and bridges make Enosburgh as rich in aesthetic value as it is in community spirit and pride.

Fairfax

Fairfield

Fairfax, which is the southernmost town in Franklin County, borders both Chittenden and Lamoille Counties as well. No matter what the season, Fairfax, which is located on Route 104, with its covered bridge, Fairfax Falls, open farmland and maple groves is a pleasant town to visit – and it offers a wonderful view of Mount Mansfield. A visit to the Fairfax Historical Society will reveal the story of this town’s ability to survive the worst of financial drought as well as natural disasters – perhaps even a tornado.

Fairfield was the birthplace of the 21st President of the United States, Chester A. Arthur. A replica of the family home and the church in which his father preached has been restored and offered as a historical site, one you’ll surely want to visit. Located on Route 36, Fairfield is a small scenic town with picturesque family farms, rolling hills, and picturesque Fairfield Pond. Fletcher

Franklin

Fletcher is so remote that there is only a small sector of Route 108 that cuts through its eastern edge. There are other ways to get there, but youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got to love those little country roads! Fletcher is certainly a quiet destination for those who love the outdoors. Metcalf Pond is a good place to relax and do a little fishing, and Fletcher is also a trail head for the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers snowmobile trail network.

Franklin is home to Lake Carmi, the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fourth largest natural lake; along its shorelines are a Vermont State Park, and over 200 summer camps. If you fish, Lake Carmi has plenty of species to choose from including small and large-mouthed Bass, Walleye, and Lake Trout. Georgia

Highgate

Georgia, located along both Interstate 89 and Route 7, is a short drive from nearby Chittenden County. With magnificent Lake Champlain on its western border, and Arrowhead Mountain Lake, where the town borders Milton, Georgia is a small town with lots of exciting vacation possibilities. For the outdoors and walking enthusiasts there’s the Horseshoe Barn Road and Falls Road footpaths and Mill River Falls Natural Area that offer nature’s gifts of wildlife, plants, wildflowers and birds.

Highgate, which was chartered in 1763, borders Québec, Canada, beautiful Lake Champlain and the Missisquoi River. Boasting an agrarian lifestyle, Highgate is home to 30 large dairy farms, beef cattle farms, greenhouse operations and Vermont’s largest egg farm, with some 100,000 chickens. It is also home to the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge, Highgate Falls, a large hydroelectric dam, an historic steel bridge on Old Route 207, and the believed to be haunted Highgate Manor. The haunting story dates back to the 1800’s, but the manor was also known as a hideaway during the time of the Underground Railroad, and also for bootleggers during Prohibition.

Montgomery

Richford

Love covered bridges? Then you’ve got to visit Montgomery, home to six historic covered bridges, and another that connects to the town of Enosburg (See map on pages 10-11). Montgomery, which was named after Revolutionary war hero General Richard Montgomery, borders both Lamoille and Orleans Counties. Located along Routes 118, 58, and 242 (Franklin County’s gateway to the Jay Peak area), this town has become a hub for artists and craftspeople, business professionals, farm owners, loggers and woodsmen, homeowners and plenty of vacationers.

Richford is a very rural town in the northeast corner of Franklin County, yet it has a rich history with the first settlers arriving in 1795. Within five years there was a dam, a bridge, gristmill, sawmill, a blacksmith and even a distillery. Because of Richford’s proximity to the Canadian border, it was destined to become a lively railroad town. What remains of that heyday is evident in the Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail, which offers year-round hiking, biking, and skiing and ultimately connects with St. Albans, some 26 miles away. The Vermont Association of Snow Travellers trail network also traverses Richford before connecting to Québec’s snowmobile trail system.

Sheldon Sheldon and its unicorporated village of Sheldon Springs once drew large numbers of people from far and wide to its clain-to-fame mineral springs. In the 1860’s the Central House in Sheldon was in fact one of several large hotels that actually offered bathing facilities to folks who wished to soak in this cure-all spring water. There were several bottling companies in the Sheldon area with brand names such as Central House, Missisquoi Spring Water and Vermont Springs, and those bottles are considered highly collectible nowadays. St. Albans, also known as the Rail City, and the Maple Capital of the World, is a city rich in history and culture. Each Spring it hosts the Vermont Maple Festival with demonstrations, samples, cooking and baking competitions, rides, games, entertainment and a giant street parade. In 1845 St. Albans was the Vermont and Canada Railroad’s major depot operations center and repair shop and in its prime, there were 200 trains passing through the city each day. St. Albans was also the sight of the northernmost Confederate advance in America’s Civil War, when visiting Taylor Park you are standing on the very ground where the famous St. Albans Raids took place in 1864 (see pages 6-7). A valley city with scenic views of Vermont’s Green Mountains on one side, and the beauty of Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains on the other, St. Albans City is a progressive community and a destination well worth the visit.

St. Albans Town is a vacationers dream, a friendly farming community built along the shore of Lake Champlain, offering yearround recreational fun. St. Albans Town is home to Hardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Ack, an outdoor recreation area that includes downhill and cross country skiing, snowshoeing, snowboarding, sledding, athletic fields, and wilderness trails. There are also three Vermont State Parks in St. Albans Town: Woods Island, Burton Island, and Kill Kare (see page 38), offering the ultimate in camping, fishing, and boating experiences. With Interstate 89, as well as Routes 7 and 36, the town is easily accessed from the north, south, and east. Those visiting from the west do so by water. Many stop off at the St. Albans Bay dock in the 19 acre St. Albans Bay Park. The park has a large historic boathouse, picnic pavillion, playground and recreation facilities.

Swanton

History runs deep and strong in Swanton, which has been the home of the Missisquoi Abenaki people since long before Samuel de Champlain’s arrival in 1609! Chartered in 1763, Swanton with its barges and railroad service became one of the most important industrial centers in Vermont, with timber, limestone, marble and ammunition. Swanton’s town green is also home to a pair of Royal Swans, the original birds were gifts from the Queen of England in 1961, and having these mascots has been a tradition ever since. The Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge, also located in Swanton is a 6,600acre refuge made up of a delta created by the Missisquoi River as it flows into Lake Champlain. The Railroad Depot Museum is located at the western end of the village’s one mile walking path.

Grand Isle County Made up of four islands and a peninsula on Lake Champlain, Grand Isle County is Franklin Countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s western neighbor. From north to south, the towns of the county are Alburgh, Isle La Motte, North Hero, Grand Isle, and South Hero. Summer is a booming season for the county, when second-home owners, campers, and tourists abound. Isle La Motte

Alburgh is a scenic lakeside community that was chartered in 1781 by Ira Allen, and is known as the gateway to Vermont from both New York and Canada. Alburgh is actually a peninsula situated between the Missisquoi Bay and the Richelieu River, which flows from Canada into Lake Champlain; it has the only road-based route that connects the states of Vermont and New York. Alburgh is home to the Alburgh Dunes State Park, one of the longest natural sand beaches on Lake Champlain.

Of the four Champlain Islands, Isle La Motte is the farthest north and most remote. It is also the landing place of Samuel de Champlain who discovered the lake that was named after him in 1609. Isle La Motte, which is seven miles long and two miles wide, is home to St. Anneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Shrine, which draws thousands of visitors each year, and the Goodsell Ridge Preserve, the 81-acre site of the historic Fisk Quarry and the Chazy Reef.

Grand Isle

North Hero is located along Route 2 and boasts some of the most beautiful historic buildings right on the lake. It is a vacationer’s dream with plenty of options for boating, fishing, camping, biking, and swimming. It is home to three state parks, and offers some of the most scenic views on the islands, via A Trail of Two Beaches bicycle loop that runs from North Hero State Park to the Alburgh Dunes.

Grand Isle is home to one of the oldest log structures in the United States; Capt. Jedediah Hyde, one of the first pioneer settlers on the islands, built Hyde Log Cabin in 1783. Grand Isle offers camping, fishing and water sports, and spectacular sunsets over the Adirondack Mountains of NY. At Gordon’s Landing there is a year-round ferry that traverses Lake Champlain to Cumberland Head, by Plattsburgh, NY. The Bastille Bridge has Vermont’s only drawbridge, which connects Grand Isle to North Hero.

South Hero South Hero is an attractive tourist spot, with the beach at Sandbar State Park, marinas, apple orchards, and fruit and dairy farms. For a fee, a ferry brings passengers across the cut allowing people to experience the entire length of the trail. A bike ride, run or walk on the 3.5 miles across Lake Champlain on the Island Line Trail is not to be missed.
