LEGACY LEAGUE
A Mobile native now living in Homewood, bestselling novelist Lauren Denton has loved writing since childhood, when she bought a pink and turquoise-covered diary in a Mobile mall. Lauren will be the featured speaker during the Legacy League’s Fall Luncheon at Vestavia Country Club on Thursday, Oct. 6, coinciding with the release of her sixth novel, A Place to Land. “I have a vivid memory of sitting on a bench outside the pet store … and writing on that first crisp page,” Lauren reminisced. She also became a “voracious reader” who, according to her dad, was reading the newspaper at the age of four! She doubts the claim is true but affirms that she was a reader. “And reading kids tend to turn into readingLauren’sadults.”diary multiplied into 20-plus journals chronicling everything from puppies and birthday parties to friends, boys, college, jobs, marriage and her struggle with infertility. While she no longer journals, she often writes out her prayers. “It’s just directed to God instead of a diary.” She is best known for “making up fictional worlds” where characters “go through difficult situations and come out on the other side smarter and stronger.” Those fictional worlds found their way into several noteworthy novels, all tales of “grit and grace” with charming and alluring Southern settings. Her USA Today bestsellers are The Hideaway (2017) (also The Wall Street Journal and Amazon Charts bestseller) and Hurricane Season (2018). Lauren’s other acclaimed books are Glory Road, The Summer House and The One You’re With Lauren also writes a monthly column in The
Homewood Star about life, faith and how funny (and hard) it is to be a parent. Though her Samford alumnus husband, Matt, prefers the Smoky Mountains, he understands that his wife favors the beach, where she can relax with him, daughters Sela and Kate, and a stack of books. The luncheon will include a few select pop-up shoppes, including Kendra Scott, and an opportunity to purchase Lauren’s new release and other titles. A portion of sales will support our scholarship fund. The event will also feature recognition of 2021-22 volunteers, board members, elected officers and event chairs. Doors open at 10:45 a.m.; the luncheon begins at 11:30. Make reservations (required) at samford.edu/legacyleague or by returning a completed reply card; limited capacity available. Legacy League members and guests have come to expect the highest quality from this event, and the 13th annual Celebration did not disappoint.

Eugenia Burch, P.A. Carmichael, Inga Clum, Kristen Comer, Wendy Cook, Julie Cundiff, Aimee Dykes, Chizuru Elliott, Katharine Faucett, Paula Gossett, Robin Greer, Susan Hill, Sharon Smith, Julie Taylor and Kathryn Woodruff. Also, nearly 35 event volunteers helped make it all go smoothly.
Afterward, the event’s attendees moved to the sanctuary for a concert by vocalist Liz Callaway and her piano accompanist, Alex Rybeck. While probably best known as an Emmy award winner and Tony nominee who starred in such Broadway hits as Miss Saigon and Cats, Liz performed numbers from a variety of genres. The stories from her long career, especially one about working as a stand-in for Barbra Streisand, were as enjoyable as her music. Her 90-minute concert, sponsored by Vulcan Materials, included “People” from Funny Girl, “Memory” from Cats and “Journey to the Past” from one of her animated films, Anastasia. Celebration attendees were not the only ones to enjoy hearing from Liz. Earlier in the day, she taught a master class in Samford’s School of the Arts, sharing musical coaching and sage advice with the Westudents.aregrateful to Scholar ship Celebration Chair Rhonda Orr and committee members

Meet Gordon Bals and experience his unique way of making the Scriptures come alive and pointing others to God. His latest book, Grace from Head to Heart: Experiencing God’s Kindness in a Fallen World, opens the way for relating more honestly and vulnerably with God, especially in times of hardship and deep hurt. Brokenness and difficulties are inevita ble at times, Gordon explains; learning to navigate them is not always easy. Seeking and receiving God’s love in our most difficult times give us the ability to experience joy alongside suffering and to mature in faith. Humbly weaving in his experience as a believer, husband and father of three daughters, Gordon shares how faith has shaped his life and work. He is the founder of Daymark Pastoral Counseling and serves as an associate professor at Beeson Divinity School.

Steve Skipper is a renowned sports artist who has overcome many obstacles in his life. “There was something inside of me that would not quit,” Steve said. Growing up in Rosedale in a dysfunctional family, he joined a gang early in life. Saying things like “we’ve got your back” and “we’ll take a bullet for you,” the gang members presented themselves as the greatest family he could have. Later he became a Christian, left the deceptive gang world and taught himself how to paint. After spending years as a “starving artist,” Steve broke through racial barriers as he went on to become one of the top sports artists in the world. Today sports halls of fame all over the country make room for his art. His faith journey in confronting racism throughout his art career is the subject of the documentary film Colors of Character (2020).

Kathryn celebrates receiving the Wright Award with her husband, Byron, and Julie Taylor.
To Cara Sadler, a Legacy League scholarship recipient and Samford alumna, Legacy League members made Samford feel like home. Cara, who earned an English degree in 2020 and a master’s in secondary education from Vanderbilt in May, said that the academic side of Samford prepared her for graduate school and beyond and helped her faith grow. The Legacy League provided comfort and encouragement for her. “When I first came to Samford, I had no idea what a blessing the Legacy League would be in my life,” she said. “Goodie bags and encouraging notes from LL (members) made me feel seen and valued!”
Where Are They Now?
Kathryn Woodruff Honored with Lolla Wright Award by Katie Hughes
This fall Cara began her career as a sixth grade English teacher at Franklin, Tennessee’s Brent wood Academy, her alma mater, where she also coaches volleyball. “I’m most excited to be able to invest in my students in the same way that many of my teachers invested in me,” she said. Future plans possibly include more education and later, a family. “I would love to also get a master’s in English literature down the road. Eventually, I would love to get married and start a family of my own.” Cara has some advice for incoming Legacy League students. “Take advantage of all the opportunities that the Legacy League offers.
Telling your story to people at an event may seem scary, but it’s so freeing. You never know the positive impact your story may have on someone who hears it.” Cara’s redemptive story has inspired all who have heard it. Her mother died of ovarian cancer when Cara was 11, and her father struggled with drug and alcohol addiction until his death. One of her greatest blessings was being adopted into a new family. “After I came to Samford, I realized something. It is in the darkest times that God’s light shines the brightest in our lives.”
“Outstanding service” and “devotion” are terms constantly found when reading about the life of Lolla Wurtele Wright, the namesake for the Legacy League’s cherished annual award given to a member who epitomizes those attributes. Mrs. Wright was the wife of President Leslie S. Wright and served as the organization’s executive director for 25 years. Kathryn Woodruff, the 2022 recipient of the award, consistently displays “outstanding service” andAlthough“devotion.”Kathryn is an alumna of Samford University, she did not become involved with the Samford Auxiliary (now the Legacy League) until a friend and fellow alumna invited her to a meeting. After joining, she quickly got involved, employing the skills honed during her professional life at BellSouth to benefit the student-focused scholarship organization that is today’s Legacy League. She has served in multiple roles since joining in 2008: recording secretary, VP for Communication, president (2015-2017) and her current position as Newsletter Committee chair. In this position, her artistic eye, writing abilities and attention to detail shine as she guides her committee through the production of two annual newsletters — like this issue! As great as Kathryn is and has been in her formal roles, serving as a constant cheerleader and supporter of the Legacy League and its mission is what she does best. Her award nominator said, “She is intelli gent, thoughtful, intentional and brings insight and wisdom to each task she undertakes. She effectively led our organiza tion … (and) spent numerous hours helping create the task lists for each office and event chair to make officer transition easier with clearly delineated roles and responsibilities. You name it, and she has probably done it. Many of our members are a direct result of her enthusiastic recruiting efforts.”

Kathryn was presented with the award at the April 14 membership meeting, and her husband, Byron, was there to celebrate with her.

She was invited by Karen and Caroline Carlisle to a Fall Luncheon and soon after was asked to serve on the junior board. She loves to travel, especially anywhere with great scuba diving.
Diane Eggert, VP for student scholarship and support

She has faithfully served in Scholarship Recipient Care for several years. Diane loves spending time with her grandchildren and taking in all the theatre Birmingham has to offer!
Karen has served as chair of Scholarship Recipient Care, VP for Programs, chair of the Scholarship Luncheon and VP for Student Scholarship and Support. Q: How have you been impacted by volunteering with the Legacy League?
A: Legacy League gives me the opportunity to provide support to Samford students outside the classroom, which impacts the way I teach. I truly enjoy meeting scholarship recipients and hearing their inspirational stories. Understanding their perspectives helps me identify issues our students may face which can hinder their academic success.
Reaching out to past scholarship recipients for updates on their lives is so exciting since many of them are doing amazing things! One of my first memories of volunteering with the Legacy League was serving on the publicity team. Our role was to place flyers in businesses for upcoming events. Of course, my favorite way to serve is preparing food for Fellowship Suppers held monthly for our scholarship recipients. IN 2021-22!

“My goal for the year is to contribute to an atmosphere focused on a volunteer spirit while having FUN! I look forward to seeing members enjoy community in a meaningful and manageable way while having an absolute blast.”
During her time as a student, she saw how Legacy League funds changed the trajectories of student lives, which prompted her to later get involved as a volunteer. As she looks to the year ahead, Hollie is excited to emphasize an aspect of the Legacy League that she believes is an essential part—the fun!

We are also thrilled to be hosting our second festive poinsettia sale fundraiser that will kick off in October with pickups in early December. Additionally, we will promote several restaurant fundraisers (with the first scheduled for September 27) which are perfect for fostering community, as well as our semi-annual pine straw sale for all yard-sprucing needs. “We have to continue to fight for personal growth, community and a spirit of giving back. We are not meant to enjoy life alone, and a major part of life enjoyment is acknowledging our blessings and choosing to bless others. The junior board is an amazing example of this. We plan fun events (for all ages!) where the core goal is to better another person’s life while also enjoying our own [lives]. Many people think giving back and volunteering are all about another person, but they are also about growing yourself and enjoying one another.”

Lengthening our Memories
16 NONPROFIT ORG US POSTAGE PAID PERMIT NO. BIRMINGHAM,1083AL Legacy League Samford University 800 Lakeshore Drive Birmingham, AL 35229
Theologian Christopher Hall calls this “lengthening our memories.” For many of us, especially as we grow older, remembering doesn’t always come easily or accurately. We often rely on the images preserved in our photographs to help us remember. Frequently, we rely on each other and our shared experiences to help us fill in our memory gaps. Beck and I often rely on each other to remember accurately.
This summer, in addition to traveling to see family, Beck and I had the opportunity to visit many sacred sites in the Holy Land and throughout Europe. We learned that early Christians who lived in the first centuries after Christ’s resurrection needed tangible reminders of the meaning and purpose of their lives, too. Many made pilgrimages to holy sites in Jerusalem connected to the birth, ministry, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus. When they returned to their hometowns, some thousands of miles away, they built places of worship whose walls and ceilings were completely covered with beautiful pictorial images of God’s story from Genesis to Revelation. The early believers, like us, needed not only pictures to remember, but they also needed to gather with each other to remember. They knew that the most important part of their story, the story that matters, was how they fit into God’s story. Our trip included 30 fellow travelers –several pastors, other Christian college presidents, faculty members, scholars and spouses. We toured nearly 40 sites, includ ing churches, baptistries, temples, chapels, basilicas and monasteries located in 11 different cities and 6 different countries. Our travel group included some long-time friends as well as new ones. As we toured and spent our days together, we grew to know each other quickly. We shared our stories during bus rides, meals, walks and while standing in line (a lot!). Beck and I agree that we were as equally impacted and fascinated by the testimonies of our fellow travelers as we were by the visual testimo nies of the early Christian believers displayed in the countless frescoes and mosaics we enjoyed. As members of Legacy League – people who are stepping forward in faith to answer our call to ministry – we have memories to share and stories to tell. As we gather and share, our burdens are lightened, our hearts encouraged and our steps quickened. This is true for our Legacy League scholarship recipients as well. For all of us, our memo ries remind us of those who have helped us along the way – people who have loved us by listening, showing compassion, offering prayer, giving generously and even provid ing Aslaughter.wesee the photos and read the articles from this newly designed issue of Happenings, I hope you will be reminded of God’s story weaving through you and through the Legacy League. Soon we will be gathering for our meetings, service oppor tunities, luncheons, fundraisers and more. Let’s take the opportunities ahead to tell our stories. And let’s lengthen our memo ries and create new stories – stories that matter!
by Julie Taylor
When was the last time you shared a memory? Perhaps, like me, you had the opportunity to spend time with family this summer. Recounting stories from our lives is a way to reconnect with loved ones. If your family gatherings are anything like mine, you shared some new stories and some classics – stories that get told over and over again. What memories did you share with your children, your nieces, nephews and/or grandchildren? What new memories did you make? Did you meet anyone new? What stories about your life did you share to introduce yourself to new friends? Recalling memories and storytelling remind us of who we are and give us a sense of overall meaning and purpose. In sharing our stories, we communicate to others not only what is most cherished in our lives, but also the moments and people who have shaped us along the way. Additionally, sharing memories and storytelling help us remember God’s activity in our lives.
