Samford University McWhorter School of Pharmacy est. 1927
Since its founding, Samford University’s McWhorter School of Pharmacy has remained steadfast in its mission: preparing students in a nurturing, Christian environment to be exemplary pharmacists and improve health worldwide through innovative pharmacy practice, scholarship and service.
While the pharmacy profession has evolved greatly since Samford held its first pharmacy class in 1927, it is through the work of our alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends that our mission and legacy have endured. As we prepare to celebrate McWhorter School of Pharmacy’s 100th anniversary in 2027, we created an opportunity for you to not only honor McWhorter School of Pharmacy’s past, but also ensure its future.
Our goal is simple, yet bold—to establish 100 newly endowed scholarships before our 100th year.
Scholarships have always been important, but now more than ever, they serve a vital role. McWhorter School of Pharmacy seeks to recruit and retain students who pursue academic excellence while demonstrating compassion, collaboration and care. Scholarships show our commitment to these values for we believe they are imperative for the future of our profession.
In 2022, through the generosity of many, we awarded more than $1.2 million in student scholarships, and with your support, we know we can close the gap and reach our goal of $2 million.
Ensuring the Next 100 Years
To become a member of the Century Circle, we ask that you be able and willing to commit to a gift of $25,000 or more.
Your gift can be made over a period of up to five years. Once the pledge reaches a minimum of $25,000, an endowment is created, and it will generate an annual income of $1,250 a year, which will then be awarded to a student. As the fund increases, so will the award, ensuring the scholarship is awarded annually in perpetuity.
While time is required for an endowment to generate income for a scholarship, many donors choose to make an additional gift, creating an annual scholarship that can be awarded until the endowment is fully vested.
In creating a scholarship, we will work with you to set the specific scholarship criteria. Some donors have a desire to support students who have a passion for a specific area of pharmacy practice; others want to establish a scholarship that will be given to students from their home state. But whether the criteria are broad or specific, scholarships always make a meaningful impact in the life of the student who receives it.
Why Endowments Matter
Endowments are vitally important to Samford’s future. They provide permanent, self-sustaining sources of funding—they are truly “gifts that keep on giving.” While an annual scholarship is awarded until the fund is depleted, an endowed scholarship is fully invested. The scholarship is then awarded through the income this investment earns.
With an endowment, the principle of the scholarship is never spent, and it will grow over time to generate an increasing stream of funding. Your gift—and all future income from it—becomes a permanent source of funding and ensures the scholarship will last forever.
