Renovation Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting
Thursday, Sept. 1, 10 a.m., Quad 2
Buchanan Hall, home to our Division of Music since 1958, reopened its doors this summer, offering a completely renovated interior for both the Division of Music and School of the Arts administrative offices. While retaining the architectural heritage of the exterior, the interior has received a dramatic overhaul, including an elevator connecting all four floors.
The first floor is a student-centered zone with a common area, instrument storage, practice rooms, a computer lab and a new recording studio. The second floor includes a School of the Arts welcome center, administrative offices, studios and classrooms. Classrooms and faculty studios are located on the third floor. The fourth floor has offices, a commons area and a smaller classroom/conference room space.
Buchanan Hall is now accessible to all of our students and provides state-of-the-art facilities that meet the needs of our students and faculty today and tomorrow.
Come help us celebrate this milestone for the School of the Arts with a grand opening celebration on Sept. 1 at 10 a.m.

As a frequently invited guest at many of the world's most noted festivals and conferences for Low Brass, his voice-like timbre reaches everyone in his audience. In addition to performing with many of the finest orchestras in the United States, chamber music is an integral component of his career. He has performed on euphonium and/or trombone with the Brass Band of Battle Creek, New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Youngblood Brass Band, but his most celebrated collaboration to date is as first euphonium with the Sotto Voce Quartet. Currently, Demondrae is professor of music at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He is also serving on the faculty of Samford University as a Davis Artist in Residence. Thurman is accompanied by former Samford Division of Music Associate Dean Kathryn Fouse, who currently serves as dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. SPA Trio Susanna Phillips, soprano Paul Neubauer, viola Anne-Marie McDermott, piano Oct. 6, 7:30 p.m., Brock Recital Hall Alabama-born soprano Susanna Phillips continues to establish herself as one of today’s most sought-after
singing actors and recitalists. Phillips is a recipient of The Metropolitan Opera’s 2010 Beverly Sills Artist Award. Known for her sparkling portrayal of Musetta in La Bohème, Phillips has sung at the Met for 12 consecutive seasons in the roles of Musetta, Pamina, Donna Anna, Rosalinde, Antonia/Stella, Micaëla, Donna Elvira, and most recently as Countess Almaviva. Violist Paul Neubauer’s exceptional musicality and effortless playing led The New York Times to call him “a master musician.” He recently made his Chicago Symphony subscription debut with conductor Riccardo Muti and his Mariinsky Orchestra debut with conductor Valery Gergiev. Pianist Anne-Marie McDermott is a consummate artist who balances a versatile career as a soloist and collaborator. She performs over 100 concerts a year in a combination of solo recitals, concerti and chamber music. Her repertoire choices are eclectic, spanning from Bach and Haydn to Prokofiev and Scriabin to Kernis, Hartke, Tower and Wuorinen. Itamar Zorman, violin with Adam Golka, piano Jan. 24, 7:30 p.m., Brock Recital Hall Itamar Zorman is one of the most soulful, evocative artists of his generation, distinguished by his emotionally gripping performances and gift for musical storytelling. Since his emergence with the top prize at the 2011 International Tchaikovsky Competition, he has wowed audiences all over the world with breathtaking style. His “youthful intensity” and “achingly beautiful” sound shine through in every performance, earning him the title of the “virtuoso of emotions.” Zorman will be accompanied by Polish American pianist Adam Golka.
Spencer Myer, piano Part of the Morris Piano Competition Festival Feb. 9, 7:30 p.m., Brock Recital Hall Lauded for "superb playing" and "poised, alert musicianship" by the Boston Globe, and labeled "definitely a man to watch" by London's The Independent, American pianist Spencer Myer is one of the most respected and sought-after artists on today's concert stage. Myer’s orchestral, recital and chamber music performances have been heard throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Africa and Asia. An enthusiastic supporter of the education of young musicians, Myer has served as a guest faculty at the Oberlin and Baldwin-Wallace Conservatories of Music, and in the fall of 2015, he was appointed Artist-Teacher of Piano and Collaborative Piano at Boston's Longy School of Music of Bard College. Camille Thomas, cellist April 11, 7:30 p.m., Brock Recital Hall Optimism, vitality and joyful exuberance are elements of Camille Thomas’ rich and compelling personality. The young Franco-Belgian cellist, who signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon in April 2017, understands art’s power to bring people together, to unite individuals from diverse cultures, countries and backgrounds. Her charismatic artistry is driven by a passion for life and a desire to inspire others to open their hearts to the wonder and emotion of classical music. “I strongly believe that music has the power to enlarge the heart, to make you feel everything with more intensity,” she says. “Music gives hope for the beauty and greatness of the human soul.”

Emma Taylor Theatre for Youth Series Orphie and the Book of Heroes (musical) Music by Michael Kooman Book and Lyrics by Christopher Dimond Sept. 30-Oct. 1, 7 p.m., Oct. 2, 2:30 p.m., Harrison Theatre Orphie and the Book of Heroes takes place in ancient Greece in the time of Homer, the great storyteller of the Illiad and the Odyssey. Homer is guardian to Orphie, a young orphan girl who loves to hear and act out the stories of the great Greek heroes. With a wooden sword at her side and visions of her personal hero, Heracles, she never backs down from a fight. One afternoon Orphie returns home to find Homer gone, kidnapped by the god of the underworld, Hades. She doubts she is big enough and strong enough to rescue Homer herself, so she decides to travel to Mount Olympus to ask for aid in her quest. Along the way, she meets a few gods and persists through some demanding tasks, and ultimately, finds that she doesn’t need to look outside of herself to find all the qualities of a true hero. Michael J. and Mary Anne Freeman Theatre and Dance Series Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play Oct. 27-30, 7:30 p.m., Boren Courtyard How do stories get told across time and generations? Set in a dystopian world without power, Mr. Burns shows how the memories of our present become the myths of our future. This weird, wild and wacky production takes the scripts of a certain familiar TV show and imagines how these stories can become the glue that holds a society together, or tears it apart. (Intended for mature audiences.)
Ten-Minute Play Festival Dec 9-10 Michael J. and Mary Anne Freeman Theatre and Dance Series Annual Dance Concert, Masterpieces Feb. 9-11, 7:30 p.m., Feb. 12, 2:30 p.m., Harrison Theatre The Samford Dance Company explores the beauty of masterpieces in the annual dance concert performance. Michael J. and Mary Anne Freeman Theatre and Dance Series The Birds March 16-18, 7:30 p.m., March 19, 2:30 p.m., Harrison Theatre Daphne du Maurier’s short story, also the basis for Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film, is boldly adapted by Conor McPherson—a gripping, unsettling and moving look at human relationships in the face of societal collapse. In an isolated house, strangers Nat and Diane take shelter from relentless masses of attacking birds. They find relative sanctuary but not comfort or peace; there’s no electricity, little food and a nearby neighbor may still be alive and watching them. Another refugee, the young and attractive Julia, arrives with some news of the outside world, but her presence also brings discord. Their survival becomes even more doubtful when paranoia takes hold of the makeshift fortress—an internal threat to match that of the birds outside.
Michael J. and Mary Anne Freeman Theatre and Dance Series Urinetown: The Musical Music by Mark Hollmann, lyrics by Hollmann and Greg Kotis, and book by Kotis April 13-15, 7:30 p.m., April 16, 2:30 p.m., Harrison Theatre In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides that he's had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom. A brilliant satire modeled off the plays of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, with additional nods to the musical theatre canon, Urinetown is a wickedly funny, fast-paced, and surprisingly intelligent comedic romp.
