Membership Kickoff Luncheon Featuring Gary Fenton Will Combine Open House and Fall Luncheon Activities

Members and guests who have enjoyed the Legacy League’s Open House and Fall Luncheon in the past are encouraged to attend the new Membership Kickoff Luncheon, where they can be inspired by a student testimonial and featured speaker Gary Fenton, become involved in the Legacy League’s caring community, and make an impact on students with significant financial need and challenging circumstances. The luncheon, set for Thursday, Sept. 14, at 11:30 a.m. at Vestavia Country Club, will include recognition of 2022-23 board members and volunteers, as well as the presentation of the 2023 Lolla Wright Award. Attendees can also explore the volunteer fair, open before and after the luncheon. The fair provides the chance to learn more about how to support the Legacy League's mission through meaningful, manageable volunteer service.

Gary Fenton, retired pastor of over 45 years, including 25 years at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, and author of four books, will deliver an encouraging homily. His heart for students needing assistance is evidenced by his current part-time work as senior advancement officer for Beeson Divinity School, helping raise money for scholarships. Gary and his wife, Alta Faye (a past Legacy League president), are both Legacy League members, as are their daughters, Sara Hassler, Amy Lee and Leah Treadwell. The Fentons’ passion for the Legacy League’s mission is fueled by firsthand experience. Gary had difficulty affording college and seminary, so Alta Faye worked to help make them possible.

Gary appreciates the Legacy League’s holistic approach to prepare our scholarship recipients for success at Samford and beyond

Scholarship Celebration 2023 Lives up to its Name

It’snot often one is fortunate enough to enjoy gourmet food, celebrate record-breaking successes, watch a scholarship recipient’s heartfelt video and listen to four gifted musicians, all in the same night— unless of course you attended the Legacy League’s Scholarship Celebration on April 20 at Covenant Presbyterian Church! The evening featured a sponsor reception and celebratory dinner, presented by Samford Dining by Aramark, and a fabulous concert, presented by Vulcan Materials. The event, which raised over $80,000 for the Legacy League Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing Centennial Scholarship, included recordbreaking sponsor contributions.

The reception, attended by 78 of our generous sponsors, featured hors d’oeuvres including phyllo-wrapped asparagus, caprese crostini, bacon-wrapped chicken and jumbo crab cakes. Moving into the fellowship hall for dinner, guests enjoyed a salad course followed by an entrée duo of applewood-smoked beef tenderloin and charbroiled red snapper, enhanced by château potatoes with gruyère cheese and green beans with sweet golden lentils. The dessert of turtle cheesecake was not to be missed.

Executive Director Julie Taylor opened the dinner program by recognizing event sponsors and sharing about our life-changing mission. She invited the Scholarship

Just in case the evening’s 223 attendees had the capacity to be further amazed, a concert by Billboard-charting quartet Sons of Serendip followed in the sanctuary. This group wowed the audience with a variety of music from hymns and original compositions to songs by Stevie Wonder and Kansas. The harp, piano and cello were flawlessly beautiful and the vocals silky smooth.

Many thanks to the Scholarship Celebration Committee’s 17 members and the 39 other volunteers who helped make the event a success! 

Celebration Committee, led by Chair Rhonda Orr, to help announce two exciting annual totals: the amount raised for the new Moffett & Sanders Scholarship—$221,661— and the amount raised for all Legacy League scholarships—$541,566! Both totals have since been exceeded!

The audience saw the impact of Legacy League scholarships in a touching video about scholarship recipient Haley. Samford President Beck Taylor expressed his gratitude for the ways the Legacy League implements the university’s Christian mission. Affirming his and Julie’s personal commitment to the organization’s work, he announced a new Legacy League scholarship

Programs Will Inspire, Entertain and Encourage

Legacy League membership meetings are wonderful opportunities for fellowship, blessing and enrichment. This year’s featured guests are sure to pique our members’ interests and move their hearts. The November and April meetings will take place at the Samford President’s Home, and the March meeting will be in Brock Recital Hall on Samford’s campus. Refreshments and fellowship will start at 10:30 a.m. followed by the program at 11:15 a.m.

THURSDAY, NOV. 9 - STEWART MCLAURIN

A returning (and favorite) guest of the Legacy League, Stewart McLaurin has been president of the White House Historical Association since 2014. The association’s non-profit and non-partisan mission is to support conservation and preservation at the White House with non-government funding. Stewart has expanded the association’s audience through books, a video series and event appearances, with the goal of preserving the White House history for future generations. He is a member of the USA Today Board of Contributors and writes a monthly column about the history of the White House and our nation’s presidents and first ladies. An Alabama native, Stewart attended Shades Valley High School. This meeting will include sales of official White House Historical Association Christmas ornaments.

THURSDAY, MARCH 7 - DANIEL CASON

Daniel Cason is a concert pianist, ordained minister, and founder and director of K.I.D.S. Christian Music Center and K.I.D.S. Community School of the Arts; he is also a member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church’s music staff. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from MTC School of Theology. An incredibly gifted pianist, he lends his talent to local school choirs around Birmingham. He also feeds and clothes between 400 and 500 people monthly through his Bread of Life Food Pantry. Daniel’s story is reminiscent of some of our Legacy League students’ stories—he is an accomplished musician, a minister and an overcomer whom the Lord continues to use to bless others. Attendees may be moved to tears at Brock Recital Hall when Daniel leads a worshipful and reflective time together at our March meeting.

THURSDAY, APRIL 4 - JANET GILLISPIE

Janet Gillispie is the author of Delivered, A Memoir: My Dark Path through Addiction. Her story illustrates Jesus Christ's redemptive power as she overcame homelessness, teen pregnancy and drug abuse. One reader says, “I pictured every person I've ever seen or known who appeared to be a hopeless case and realized that no matter what depths of sin one can fall into, there is always hope in the Lord. From beginning to end, we are given the privilege of seeing the hand of God at work as he totally transforms the heart and life of a miserable sinner into a joyful woman who reflects His glory. … Her story touched my heart and humbled me as I was reminded of the power of God's love to draw us to Himself.” Janet works as a radiological technologist at UAB, where she was named employee of the year in 2006.

Dr. Beck A. Taylor Announces New Scholarship Honoring Julie

Aptly named the Scholarship Celebration, the 2023 year-end event included a very special announcement by Samford President Beck A. Taylor. “Legacy League’s purpose and mission is inspirational, it’s transformational, but it’s also a heavy lift—the business of transforming lives isn’t easy or cheap. It takes all of us,” he began.

After thanking the room full of Legacy League supporters, he continued, “Honoring Samford’s amazing first lady and executive director of Legacy League, I made it a priority for our family to endow the new Julie Taylor Legacy League Scholarship because Julie and I have had a front-row seat to watch the amazing ways God has blessed our students through financial support, love and mentoring. . . . I can think of no better honor or recognition for a person who loves our students fiercely, advocates for them relentlessly and loves them so deeply.

Recipients of (this scholarship) will be forever impacted by a Christ-centered education at Samford, enabled in part by this . . . gifted and committed leader and follower of Jesus. Julie, I love you, we love you. Thank you for your commitment to Samford, to Legacy League and to our students.”

President Taylor also announced that the Templeton World Charity Foundation had generously added $30,000 to the new scholarship, increasing its overall impact.

A bit overcome with emotion, Managing Director Sharon Smith expressed her deep gratitude to the Taylors for their generosity, affirmation and tireless support. “Julie, the Lord knew you were the perfect person to become our new executive director, to build on the strong foundation that has been laid for many years. Thank you for being the wise, caring, encouraging, visionary leader we needed for this new era.” She also thanked the

Taylor family and recognized those in attendance: their two daughters, Lauren and Chloe; Julie’s parents, Bonny & Larry Dearing; and Julie’s sister, Kim Noone, and her husband, Tom. 

The Tradition Continues

Inthe twelve years since its inception, the Christmas Home Tour has become an event so ingrained in the community that it’s hard to imagine the yuletide season without it. Many guests attend annually, sharing that our tour is their favorite holiday tradition. To date the beloved event has included 51 homes, over 6,000 attendees and hundreds of volunteers. Most importantly, the Lord has used it to raise over $365,000 for life-changing scholarships!

Back in 2011 there was no SignUpGenius for volunteer recruitment, no timed home entry, no custom-built ticketing system, no pop-up shoppe application process. The first tour was planned in weeks, not months, by a

Their reminiscences on the early years are akin to historic (and true!) tales of walking miles to school in the snow or traveling hours by car with no air conditioning or seatbelts. Thank you to all who have contributed to the creation and ongoing success of this “signature event” for the Legacy League!

The tradition begun in 2011 will continue on Thursday, December 7, with five fabulous homes in Homewood, Mountain Brook and Vestavia Hills. The gorgeous residences featured this year include an array of architectural styles, ages, décor and holiday trimmings to suit all manner of tastes. Samford Alumna and Daughter of Chick-f il-A Founder Returns to Speak at Scholarship Luncheon

No one can deny the enormous impact Chick-fil-A and its founding family, the Cathys, have had on America. A quick scroll through social media finds a meme to honor the leadership and organizational skills Chick-fil-A franchises possess to consistently provide speedy and friendly drive-thru service. Consider a picture of a traffic jam on a highway with eight lanes going each way that reads, “Chick-fil-A drive-thru [can] be like this, and I’ll still get my food in three minutes.” With unbeatable efficiency and a charming “My pleasure!” from a team member as you leave, the Cathys have successfully helped to implement a camaraderie among employees and a business culture that brings smiling customers back again and again.

Next Valentine’s Day, Samford alumna Trudy Cathy White ’79 will spread the love with the Legacy League by sharing memories of faith, family and food as our Scholarship Luncheon speaker. While still a Samford student, she hired fellow student John White to work at Birmingham’s second Chick-fil-A restaurant. The two would eventually marry and serve Christ through various successful ventures—international ministry, acclaimed authorship, public speaking, WinShape camps and an active family life.

Volunteer Spotlight

The Whites have four children and 17 grandchildren. Critics have spoken highly of Trudy’s inspirational writing which includes charming anecdotes about her upbringing and life, as well as moving advice for persons of all ages and stages of life. The author of several books, including her most recent release, A Legacy that Lasts, Trudy will share a hope-filled message with us as she did at the 2020 Fall Luncheon. The event will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2024, at Vestavia Country Club and will begin at 11:30 a.m. Plan to come early to peruse silent auction items benefiting the Legacy League’s Scholarship Fund. 

Jan Service: Interacting with Students Inspires Her

Jan grew up mostly in Texas as a “military brat” and studied human resources at the University of Texas. She and her husband, Bill, moved to Birmingham when Bill accepted a teaching position in Samford's Brock School of Business, where he served for 28 years and became professor emeritus.

Jan was a training consultant at UAB before her retirement. Now she fills her time with service. Jan has worked with Legacy League student care, the Christmas Home Tour (which she is chairing for 2023) and anywhere else she is needed. She also volunteers at the Assistance League of Birmingham.

Q: How did you first get involved with the Legacy League?

A: I joined after being invited to a Scholarship Celebration and listening to the inspiring story of one of the scholarship recipients.

Q: How have you been impacted by volunteering with the Legacy League?

A: First, learning how much scholarship students accomplish and the challenges they have overcome is extremely inspiring. Seeing what they accomplish after graduation demonstrates the impact Samford and the Legacy League have had on creating generational change in their lives. Second, working alongside devoted Christian women who live out their faith

serves as a model for me.

Q: What highlights can you share from your recent areas of involvement with the Legacy League?

A: My husband and I enjoy hosting Fellowship Suppers for our students and getting to know them individually. It’s touching to meet them as nervous, shy freshmen and watch their personal growth through their time at Samford. The Legacy League should feel proud of being a part of their successful journeys. 

Carolyn Markham, Mary Byrd, Claire Gwaltney and Alta Faye Fenton address envelopes for the Scholarship Celebration. Katharine Faucett, Eliza Hudson and Ashley Seligson host a fiesta-themed Fellowship Supper. Thanks to Eliza and her husband, Dean Blake Hudson, for sharing their home with our students and members! Devoted volunteers share a meal with Legacy League scholarship recipients at the March Fellowship Supper. Volunteers and staff put on a total of eight suppers during the 2022-23 school year. Scholarship Luncheon Committee members and other volunteers meet at Vestavia Country Club to prepare for the mid-winter event with Susan Yates. Pickleball & Picnic Committee members Ryan Condra, Jessica George (co-chair), Hollie Garner, Tanner Fields (co-chair) and Caroline Adams scope out the courts for the spring event. Paula Gossett, Mary Berryman, Donna Jowers and Jeanelle Day bring to life Donna’s beautiful vision for the Scholarship Luncheon table centerpieces. Parents of Samford students make excellent Legacy League members, so Karen Carlisle, Sherri Foyt, Cindy Hardy and Julia Vasquez are ready to chat with them at Bulldog Days. A large group of volunteers sets up and decorates the day before the Scholarship Celebration. Stuffing envelopes for the summer membership mailing goes by quickly with the teamwork of Kathryn Woodruff, Lori Sullivan, Shea Williams and Julianna Whatley (student worker).

Junior Board Seeks to Continue Exciting Momentum

Aswe enter the 2023-24 year, I am continuously humbled and grateful to say “yes” to the LL and its incredible work. Since its inception in 2016, the LL junior board has raised over $25,000 for student scholarships! I am reminded that each restaurant fundraiser, committee meeting, poinsettia sale or pickleball game impacts student lives. What an exciting time to be a part of this incredible organization!

Last spring the junior board hosted a variety of successful events. On March 21, Ivy Odom, chef and lifestyle expert, graced us with her cooking expertise, intellect and humor at our Cooking Demo & Tasting at the Samford President’s Home. It was a lovely night of learning new recipes and kitchen tips and enjoying tastings (especially the lemon basil sweet tea) on the candlelit patio worthy of a Southern Living photoshoot. On April 15, we headed to the courts with more than 40 friends for Pickleball and Picnic. Fun was had by all as expert pickleball instructors Stan Brown and John Callahan taught groups of all skill levels the fundamentals and essentials. We had six courts packed with LL members and guests, all who were able to hear one of our student’s stories and learn about our mission. The day combined a sport that so many love with the life-changing impact of the LL. The spring was also sprinkled with several restaurant fundraisers—a consistent source of funds in which every meal makes a difference!

The year ahead is set to be fantastic as we continue the momentum. Expect to see both new and returning events but with a twist. Gretchen Norris and CJ Underwood are planning a Trivia Night at Little Professor's Pepper Place location on Tuesday, September 19. It will focus on community, sharing what we do and having fun—a perfect, low-pressure event for inviting a friend! We plan to continue the Poinsettia Sale, which kicks off in October, but are also excited about offering even more holiday options. Sarah Grace Featherston and Bryan Smith are joining forces to make this fundraiser bigger and better than ever. Since we had so much fun playing pickleball last spring, we are hoping to hold a pickleball tournament as our spring fundraiser. Anna Claire Pope and Caroline Adams are working to turn this idea into a competitive and fun day to support scholarships.

Jessica George will continue the momentum regarding restaurant fundraisers, the next of which will be at Taco Mama in Crestline on October 3 after the Prayer Walk. Be on the lookout for student care opportunities and member care events as we continue to strive for deeper community and belonging for our junior members. The junior board and I are so grateful for your support at all our events—the best is yet to come! 

Samford Invests in Students’ Health and Wellness through Historic Project

Avisit to Samford brings a flurry of experiences to the senses.

While your skin is warmed by sunshine over the Quad, your heart is equally warmed by friendly faces and greetings. You hear laughter from students feeling free to be themselves. You admire the natural beauty of the grounds and the reverent, architectural beauty of the chapels. If you’re not in college, you likely wish you were.

Starting in the fall of 2024, campus visits will include a stop that will invoke a whole new set of sights, sounds and feelings—a state-of-the-art Campus Recreation, Wellness and Athletic Complex. The new complex, encompassing four separate buildings totaling 165,000 square feet, is part of a comprehensive plan for expanded student recreation, health and wellness. The $65 million investment is the largest capital project in the university’s history. “We are committed to supporting our students in their educational and spiritual journeys, and we also want to support them in their physical and mental wellbeing,” said President Beck A. Taylor.

The official groundbreaking took place on April 25. Construction and renovations have concluded for the first phase of the project—the Health and Wellness Center—which is now home to University Health Services, counseling, wellness programs, a food pantry (which Legacy League students utilize) and CARE team offices.

Phase two includes extensive renovations to Seibert Hall and Bashinsky Field House and construction of a new building. Additional spaces will include much-needed practice and training areas for the university’s 17 Division I athletic teams, plus new courts, an e-sports studio, dance studios, a multi-purpose workout area, gathering spaces, a coffee house and more to benefit the entire student body.

When students receive Legacy League scholarships, they benefit from Samford’s commitment to nurture them educationally, spiritually, mentally and physically. The new complex is an important tool for such development. The Legacy League invites members to support this valuable campus addition with small gifts whose combined impact will be recognized as a contribution from “Legacy League members.” Participating in this historic effort will, said Executive Director Julie Taylor, “help us positively impact Samford students' lives as an organization and celebrate who we are as a part of the community of Samford donors.”

Volunteers help with Fellowship Suppers by contributing dinner items, serving the meals and providing take-home grocery/treat bags for the students.

Legacy League Annual Giving Societies

The names of Legacy League’s four giving societies are drawn from elements of the organization’s crest and represent its core purposes.

Legacy defines the purpose of the organization—to plant the financial seeds that will provide scholarships for Samford students today and for years to come.

The oak recalls the tradition of the Sherman Oak, named in honor of the college’s first president, and it represents the unbroken chain of teaching and learning that began in 1841.

The banner proclaims Deuteronomy 6:10–12, which reminds us that we are building on a strong foundation built by those before us.

The lamp represents the lighting of the lamp of knowledge through education.

LEGACY $5,000+

OAK $1,000–$4,999

BANNER $500–$999

LAMP $250–$499

Recognition in 2022-23 annual giving societies includes all tax-deductible contributions to Legacy League funds made July 1, 2022 - June 30, 2023.

He Never Failed Me Yet

Ona Sunday night in June, I sat in our church sanctuary during the youth choir concert with tears streaming down my cheeks. What brought tears to my eyes? Certainly, the vision of a choir loft filled with the smiles of beautiful teenagers (including my own daughter) stirred my heart. And then the sounds that reverberated through the sanctuary—120 voices accompanied by the talented hands of the pianist—moved my soul. The song lyrics— filled with the powerful truth of God’s faithfulness—uplifted my spirit.

But beyond the vision of the choir, the sounds of students’ voices and the truth of the lyrics, it was also the courageous faith of a lovely 18-year-old alto. An incoming Samford freshman, she had only weeks before unexpectedly and tragically lost her father. It was her trust in the Lord that brought those tears to my eyes. This is the song they sang:

I will sing of God's mercy. Every day, every hour, He gives me power. I will sing and give thanks to Thee for all the dangers, toils and snares that He has brought me out.

Didn't my God deliver Moses from King Pharaoh? And didn't He cool the fiery furnace for Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego?

When I think of what my God can do. He delivered Daniel. I know He will deliver you. Trust and never doubt. Jesus will surely bring you out. He never failed me yet.

In the weeks of sadness and grief following her father’s death, this young woman was finishing high school and rehearsing this song of God’s faithfulness with her church youth choir. She would go on to complete high school as a highly accomplished graduate, planning to attend Samford University. But due to her father’s

Through Legacy League, God has brought this student and many more—each with his or her own story of dangers, toils and snares—to Samford University. Not only has Jesus preserved their lives, He has also preserved their faith and hope. Through hardship, loss and trials, they are able to sing of God’s goodness!

death, her family’s ability to afford Samford University had changed.

Meanwhile, God, in His goodness and mercy, was providing a way through the dangers, toils and snares to bring her to Samford. The news of her father’s death and the resulting change in financial status had reached the ears of the compassionate admission and financial aid counselors at Samford. And because of providential events, Legacy League scholarship funds were available to help her.
