Terraced Ascent MACHU PICCHU, PERU | PABLO MOYANO | FALL 2018, WASHU

Can a building influence crowd behavior? Since 1991 the infamous UNESCO World Heritage Site, Machu Picchu has faced more crowds than it can handle. Tourists from around the world have contributed to dire environmental issues like pollution and the erosion of archaeological features. Responding to this, Machu Picchu has since become a hub for scientists who work to preserve and remedy the landmark.

This intervention connects two groups that have otherwise may have never crossed paths here. It neighbors the archaeological site - embedded into the adjacent mountainside, Phutu-qusi. The project’s location makes it attractive to both tourists and scientists/ students who come to learn from and preserve Machu Picchu. The design encourages both groups to coexist- realizing the environmental impacts and responsibilities each poses on the area. Ultimately the project aims to inspire a cooperative effort towards respecting and celebrating the natural landscape of Machu Picchu..

Inverted Expansion (A hyperloop case study) FALL 2019 _PROFESSOR LINDA SAMUELS

As climate change worsens and life on earth becomes increasingly difficult to sustain, people have already begun exploring possibilities of living on other realms -notably outer space and underwater. Tthis project questions how the hyperloop could become a vital piece of infrastructure in the event of an “uninhabitable earth.� Set off the coast of Los Angeles, the hyperloop system explored in this project transports passengers to a station located over a mile offshore.

Kinloch Memory Exchange SPRING 2020 (IN PROGRESS)_ JULIE BAUER

How can history help restore humanity stimulate progress for the future?

This project reintroduces the life and culture that has been lying dormant in Kinloch since the airport buyout through this so-called “memory scape”. It seeks to bring the narrative of Kinloch to life all while respecting those whose lives took a turn for the worst here and without discredited Kinloch’s future potential to reestablish itself as a great place to be. Kinloch is only scarcely populated with a few minor apartment buildings, a city hall, and two churches. The project functions as an exchange, bringing people here to live for varied increments at a time. Its audiences are flight crew from the neighboring airport, frequent business travelers, artists/ craftsmen who may stay for extended lengths of time, and casual visitors who come for just a few hours.

KUDZU TOWER Rising out of a sea of Kudzu the tower becomes not only a observatory to over look the rolling hillsides of the area but a totem of time. As the seasons change Kudzu grows and envelopes the tower. Due to the its limited reach from it roots it stops at around seventy five feet each season. An internal vine can be aided in its growth to extend further. Entering from below grade and moving up through the tower between the vines. It transition from the dark root level to a more open and exposed view.

Facade Diagram

Vertical fins cover the facades of the building. The fins shape is directly responsive to the programs that is shades. Deep convex fins cover the living rooms to protect form the daytime sun, The balconies have a convex fin allowing light to pass deep into the 3 meter balconies. A vertical fin covers the bedrooms to allow morning night to come in.

URBAN RESIDENCES BERLIN, GERMANY [FL 2017]

This project focuses on using geometries to create shapes implemented by a set list of rules. The rules applied to the towers were this: coupled, parallel couples, one tall and one short, coupled towers are offset, the tall tower provides the common shared core between couples, and shared terraces between sets of towers. Overall these towers shift to align parallel with either the existing towers or the street edge. This creates a shifting façade when viewed from the street or surrounding buildings. The footprint of the new towers are nearly the same, the width of the taller towers are larger to allow space for the service core. Along this core, the private function of the units (bedrooms and bathrooms) radiate out, while the main living space including kitchen, dining, and living room are furthest away from this core, and extend from the outer street façade to the internal courtyard façade.

ZERO MUSEUM MENIL COLLECTION CAMPUS HOUSTON, TX [SP 2018] The Zero Museum is a proposal that serves as a permanent house for works by the Zero/ Azimuth Group. The Zero group were mainly artists and architects, interested in installations and architectural spaces. The artwork itself is to counter typical expectation of artworks, and to encounter various relationships between art and architecture, “spatial art,� and the opportunity to design and develop spaces that privilege experience over appearance. They believed their approach to art making using light, common materials, and motion opened up new forms of perception. The proposed Zero Museum appears as two overlapping volumes - a white, glossy gallery box which is supplemented by matte black back-of-house volume. The overall building is organized on a 20x20 grid. SUSTAINABLE CLOSED-LOOPS ST LOUIS, MO M.UD - OPTION STUDIO [FALL 2018] ORIGINS Located in South St. Louis infrastructural crossroads, many historic ties (i.e. Lemp and Anheuser-Busch Breweries) shaped this area into a Company Town in the past. The industry and commercial trades would have been all interconnected creating a symbiotic relationship between the inhabitants of the neighborhood, employment, and everyday life. TODAY In the present day, this symbiotic relationship has been broken apart by various physical and non-physical boundaries. The historic symbiotic relationships of this South City St. Louis old Company Town can be leveraged into new and improved sustainable systems. Using NGA soon to be vacant site and using Anheuser-Busch vast industrial ecology network, among other site-specific historic buildings and neighborhood connections, a closed loop ecosystem can be formulated. A symbiotic relationship can once again be restored to this area, through the systems including Industrial Ecology, Mobility & ClosedLoops, and Water & Environment.

NUTRITION & GARDEN BIOSCIENCE | HEALTH EDUCATION CENTER ST LOUIS, MO COMPREHENSIVE STUDIO: INTERGENERATIONAL LIVING [SP 2019] This Garden Bioscience Center presents opportunities for children and elder persons to connect through the lens of nutrition. This will be done through gardening activities, education, teaching kitchens, a greenhouse, and science lab. Destinations are throughout the building, spreading out the programmatic categories and encouraging circulation throughout the whole complex. The sense of sight is amplified, through viewing corridors and connections between three main atriums that boost interaction between all age groups and all destination points. Both seniors and children alike can learn and grow from experiencing gardening, bioscience, and nutritional education.

Ecologies

Public spaces are interwoven through a production band to reveal the process, resulting in a bar building that is connected to a smaller mass and landscape feature. The building integrates with the existing flood wall, reinforcing and in some cases reintroducing flood wall infrastructure in conjunction with a new, floodable, tiered, eco-landscape that can be experienced during various river levels. This brewery will enhance access, engagement, and culture in a floodable industrial zone, tapping the riverfront.

Located along the Mississippi River, this craft brewery will connect water, beer, and people. The design accomplishes this by connecting existing infrastructures, ecologies, and urban connections in a flood zone. Beer can work as a social aggregator to bring people to a publicly underutilized waterfront while increasing cultural awareness of historical and natural resources.

Optional Studio | Living and Working in the City This projects explores opportunies of social interaction within a site shaped by historic urbanistic footprint in Seville, Spain. Revolved from the idea of small courtyards, I explored ways for solid and void spaces can be plugged into each other by making study models. Eventually, the void space becomes an inner street that creates fluidity in the congested and arbitrary site boundary.

The ground level is diversified with public programs, and as the building unifies from second floor up, the second and third floor are dedicated to co-working spaces. The interior wooden cubicle system, serving as meeting rooms and offices, is hinted by the facade along the innter street. The use of traditional window openings help bring the building to a human scale.

Comprehensive Studio | Extreme Environment As a comprehensive studio project, this design intended to explore the principle of architecture into a broader field. With the extreme condition of underwater, I tried to challenge the existing saturation diving system, a well-developed system that has been implemented for underwater jobs for a long time. As a mature technology in a very specific non-architectural field, it still demands, if not more, human comfort, as people are expected to live in there for a month at most. Therefore, I introduced architectural thinking into a highly specialized field, to explore human comfort in limited condition, as well as challenging the boundary of architectural principle.

Decompression sickness is the prioritized item that saturation divers have to deal with. A certain rate and schedule of ascending needs to be strictly followed when diving return from hundreds of feet deep after working for weeks, to avoid life-threatening health condition. Based on this ascending schedule, I designed a system that enhance divers’ comfort of living, explanding spaces for activities as they go on the journey of returning to the sea level.

Optional Studio | On Living Alone Located in a historic building in Stockholm, Sweden, this collective housing congregates people who live alone, in hope of reduce mental health problems rising in an advanced society. The existing building facade is preserved as a reminiscent of Stockholm citizen’s collective memory. Several mini residential tower rise up inside the new glass envelope, detached from the preserved facade. A gradience from public to private is created to provide different level of social needs and personal comfort to the residence.

Learned from experiencing the McCormick Tribune Student Center by Rem Koolhaas, the perspective at single spot can be multified. with the continous big voids and railings, waving roofing slopes, people in the library observe mulfiple scenarios: people chatting and reading on the grass, people going down and up, people lean on the railings on the second floor, people checking in... at one time. especially when the bookshelf together with the fabric attached at distance constantly change its positions under the action changes of the user, accompanied by the light and shadow conditions varied every moment. This project studied the technologies and challenges of building underground while still maintaining livable and workable spaces. The program required a 30,000 SF research lab with both laboratory space and residence space for the researchers. The project is broken up into two wings, residential and laboratory, each with its own light qualities. I chose the site in the Phoenix Mountains because the conditions of extreme heat and many hours of sunlight, are ideal for a subterranean architecture.

FOR BROOKLYN, BY BROOKLYN Urban design studio

Program: transit line with centers for education and training In New York City all trains lead to Manhattan. The central island contains most of the jobs in the city, making Brooklyn residents highly dependent on the train system. But what if Brooklyn could be strengthened from within? If there were nodes of commerce and the available education for any type of small business, then there would be less need to travel to Manhattan everyday. In this studio we were challenged to rethink the systems in place in New York City and to redefine what it means to live and work in Brooklyn.

To the right are close ups of the four neighborhoods we have chosen to zoom into. Each neighborhood has its own industries that we will only strengthen through various education interventions and the connection of our proposed FB line that reuses an existing track owned by the Long Island Railroad. We argue that each neighborhood would benefit from the new transportation and could empower the growth of small businesses within Brooklyn. By building jobs and empowering people through education within Brooklyn, it strengthened is economy and required less dependence on the central borough of Manhattan. To portray this we describe stakeholders within the city that would benefit from this change. The characters in our presentation are fictional but are representative of real demographics in each of the neighborhoods.

GROWING CONNECTIONS MONTESSORI SCHOOL Comprehensive Studio | St. Louis, Missouri Professor: Robert McCarter

In this comprehensive studio, I was tasked with designing a 5 classroom school that fits the specific needs of the Montessori pedagogy. Established in the streets of Rome, by Maria Montessori over 100 years ago, this pedagogy aims to foster the growth of children’s social, emotional cognitive and physical skillsets through the use of the surrounding physical environment. In designing a thoughtfully prepared environment specific to the Montessori pedagogy, I set off to design a school that gave the children freedom within limits, to explore the architecture that focuses on the censorial engagement of nature, climate and light, as well as nurturing and growing connections between students and spaces through both visual and physical spatial cues.

VISUAL THRESHOLDS BETWEEN AGE GROUPS: In order to increase visual connections between the age groups to encourage learning through seeing and doing, each age group classroom has a series of “front porches” that allow student to bring their work outside the classroom.

SUNKEN HORIZONS: LABORATORY RESEARCH CENTER Foglepole Cave Network, Monroe County, Illinois

Sited within the extents of the Foglepole Cave Network and a dynamic Karst Landscape, the building serves as a research outpost for speleologists, geologists, and other researchers alike, as well as a temporary housing facility for the scientists that spend long amounts of time at the site. Since the landscape here is dynamic and constantly changing due to the large presence of sinkholes and the subterranean cave network, I chose to focus on the interaction between the building and the landscape. In particular I paid close attention to the interaction between people and the horizon line. Nestled into the hilly topography, the building serves as a visual marker, locating your position within the extents of the site, while dissolving into the landscape’s horizon as to not impose on the natural beauty of the site. Additionally, I paid close attention to the building material choosing a white reflective glass that projects the surrounding landscape onto its finished surface, creating a cohesive integration between the building and the landscape.

Modern day structures are produced with an onset of problems relating to the documentation and the physical properties of the building assemblies. The objective of this research is to design reliable forms, and develop documentation of 3D printed concrete assembly methods and configurations that maximize the health, safety, and quality of life of the occupant on the interior and exterior of structure. With the ability to print multiple materials in a continuous bead envelope, openings and specific hollows can be precisely located and incorporated into the assemblies while not sacrificing on construction scheduling and generating unnecessary embodied energy. By using industry standard energy analysis

software, procedural analytical digital models are developed and iterated with Genepool Fitness Learning and human input. Because of the complexity of this digital landscape, models are brought into an Augmented Reality environment for further exploration and understanding and later for real time 3D printing control. The 3D printing approach while extremely beneficial to the residential construction can be applied to a high-rise or mid-rise construction typologies as well. This new form of design, documentation and construction will accelerate our capabilities of self-sufficient structures on Earth and extraterrestrial habitats.

The Savannah Rowlocks Station is designed to replace the I-16 flyover into the downtown area of Savannah, Georgia, re-establish the once-demolished Coastal Railway station, and reinvest the city in utilizing the great railway system of America. Using GIS data, the low- income housing lots to the South were redeveloped into workforce and mixed-use apartments to rehabilitate those currently living in the area, enable them to live in better housing, have a convenient

access to work, and the ability to successfully thrive in the City of Savannah. The outdoor structure and repetition involved in the canon of the station’s architecture not only lowers cost, but also enables the use of building materials in the Savannah area: adding back to the economy of the city and providing a beautiful travel experience for those that choose to utilize the station’s cheaper and more efficient form of long-distance travel.

These hidden spaces can often slip out of view. They lay at the edges of our perceived occupied volume, capturing objects and keeping them from view. Many know of these spaces as wasted spaces: spaces under the bed, behind the door, in the corner of the closet. These subtle subtractions slowly eat away at our perceived spaces, dissolving them into the idea that our everyday volumes are “too small” or “not large enough.” When a perceived space is unfolded into an objective view, the hidden spaces come out and can be identified. Through this expanse, we can start to interpret these spaces not as voided areas, but as usable volumes. We can then take advantage of their unique, formless and indiscriminate properties. The location of the new AEG is along the Ganges River in India. This location is plagued with waste and certain

areas are not suitable for habitation or any human contact. With an average daily production of 50,000,000 cubic feet of waste per day, the Ganges River stands as the modern-day example of Hidden Space. The proposal for containing this waste is a fractalized, modular building system that is able to adapt to this unsurmountable volume of waste. Utilizing the unique nature of fractalized space, the structure can decrease its volume while increasing its surface area by the means of fractal subdivision. The result of this subdivision is that the surface area on the exterior and interior can increase at an exponential rate, thus creating vast space for two-dimensional and three-dimensional organizational tactics for the reuse of the waste by means of filtration, recycling, and re-purposing.
