Middleport Pottery was built in 1888. It sits alongside the Trent and Mersey canal where in the early years finished ware would have been lifted straight onto barges for international export.

In the 1990’s Middleport Pottery was given Listed Building Status. Only one of the seven bottle kilns were still standing at this time. This remaining bottle kiln also has its own listed status. It was used in 2018 to create the Weeping Window display. Using ceramic poppies, many of which were produced in Stoke-onTrent, the display was created to commerate lifes lost in the first world war.

In 2014 the Pottery was opened to visitors. Burleigh Pottery is still produced there using traditional methods and there are studios for crafts people to work and display their products. It has been used for the setting of the Great Pottery Throw Down and also scenes from the hit series Peaky Blinders have been filmed there.

Stoke-on-Trent is a popular stop on up and coming bands tours, stopping by to play at the Sugarmill and The Underground. It’s also popular with bigger bands that come to Stoke to play at Victoria Hall, as it’s said to have great acoustics. Both Sugarmill and the Underground are part of Independent Venue Week which helps promote these venues to help them keep them open because it’s important to support venues like these which provide a platform for local artists to perform.

Not many people realise but Chatterley Whitfield is oneofthemost important sites in the Potteries.

Chatterley Whitfield was once the largest coalmine in The underground tours continued until a nearby North Staffordshire and in 1937 was the first UK colliery colliery in Wolstanton closed in 1981. As the mines to produce 1 million tons of coal in a year. were connected via underground passageways, water would need to be pumped out to stop the site Production ceased in 1977 and after extensive from flooding. On top of this problem coal gives off renovation and restoration work it re-opened in 1979 as methane so this meant that it was unsafe for the tours Britains first underground mining museum. Attracting to continue. up to 70,000 visitors each year, it proved very popular From 1986 - 1993 a different experience was opened and contributed to the local economy. whereby visitors could see demonstrations on coal winding and experience the miners cage ride to work.

Annual Heritage Open days still take place at the colliery. In recent years the site has been the backdrop for Dutch music videos and the Lloyds Bank Black Horse television commercial.

SNAPPIN TARM

Some say, that when the Staffordshire regiment were stationed in India, the regiments chef tried to imitate a chappati but couldn’t get it quite right. Once back in Stoke, the Staffs regiment tried again using basic ingredients and ended up with oatcakes.

Traditionally oatcakes are eaten as a savoury dish filled with cheese, bacon, egg or sausage. They can be eaten with jam or syrup though this is less common and not a very Stokie way to eat them.

“Savoy of the Midlands” In 1965 major regeneration work took place to the downstairs public areas, although the bedrooms still remained closed. Allegedly haunted, the current owners, offer Ghost Tours which involve wondering around the abandoned bedrooms and passageways in the hope of encountering all things supernatural. The Leopard Inn has regularly been on TV‘s Most Haunted.

Dating back to at least 1765, the Leopard Inn is famous as the meeting place where potter Josiah Wedgwood and engineer James Brindley met to discuss building the Trent and Mersey Canal. This meeting was very important to the development of the Industrial Revolution. By 1878 the Leopard became a hotel and was referred to as the “Savoy of the Midlands”. Author Arnold Benett refers to the Leopard in his “Five Towns” novels where it is known as the Tiger. By 1956 the hotel rooms were closed off due to changes in social needs.

inum tesus

inum tesus

Molly Leigh was born in 1685 and was the so called witch of Burslem. A local parson declared her to be a witch due to her none attendance at Church.

She was quite a character. She was very ugly, never married and was always seen with her pet blackbird. Due to her appearance she was thought to be poor, though in fact she was quite a shrewd businesswomen and was very kind to the poor. Molly was a regular at the Leopard Inn. Prior to her death some locals held Molly in the cellar of the Leopard and when she got out she cursed the Inn.

After her death, some locals said they had seen her around the town or sitting by the fire in her cottage. The parson decided to open up her grave and with the help of some locals moved her body to face north-south. They even caught her blackbird and buried it alive with her. Molly‘s grave can still be seen facing a different way to the other graves in St. Johns Church in Burslem. Her spirit is said to haunt the Leopard Inn.

In front, on a little hill in the vast valley, was spread out the Indian-red architecture of Bursley - tall chimneys and rounded ovens, schools, the new scarlet market, the grey tower of the old church, the high spire of the evangelical church, the low spire of the church of genuflexions, and the crimson chapels, and rows of little red with amber chimney-pots, and the gold angel of the blackened town hall topping the whole. The sedate reddish browns and reds of the composition, all netted in flowing scarves of smoke, harmonised exquisitely with the chill blues of the chequered sky. Beauty was achieved, and none saw it.
