Module on making and materiality
Mask
AAD Semester 1
The theme for the year was Gothic and the brief was to develop an object that could be worn. We were each given a part of the body to focus on, I received the hand and wrist. My project developed into creating a mask that envelops the whole head and traps the hand holding a phone close to the face. The concept is to portray the growing issue of narcissism amongst millennials and the addiction to smart phones.
Spire
AAD Semester 2
Following the same theme we were asked to design a Gothic Spire, exploring many different methods of construction and materials. My final piece was made from dissolving polystyrene with acetone into feather shapes and laminating them with black latex. The finished model took the form of something quite animalistic with was suspended in the air as though in flight.
