A Message from the President
Sam Houston State University’s contributions to the wellbeing and quality of life in Texas began more than 140 years ago when the university was established to help raise the state’s educational standards through teacher training. Today, SHSU continues that mission through targeted academic programs that strengthen the state’s economic prosperity while supporting the basic and critical needs of Texans. Leading the nation, more than 248,000 Texas farms and ranches sprawl across a beautiful, rural landscape. Our state is the nation’s top producer of cotton, supplies 20 percent of the nation’s beef cattle, and ranks first in the value of cattle raised. Not only do our farms and ranches serve as a valuable resource for food, clothing and any number of other products, the agricultural sector employs 14 percent of working Texans. Young producers, under the age of 35, accounted for more than 21,000 farms in the state. SHSU has a rich history supporting farmers and ranchers. The School of Agricultural Sciences traces its roots back to 1910 and was one of the first programs in the nation authorized to train teachers in agriculture. Today, with more than 1,200 undergraduate majors, SHSU has one of the largest non-land-grant agriculture programs in the U.S. SHSU also has a significant track record producing healthcare workers who greatly impact the quality of life in their communities. Regardless of where they live, all Texans need access to quality healthcare. Rural and underserved communities suffer from higher rates of preventable hospitalizations and deaths. Through the College of Health Sciences and the College of Osteopathic Medicine, we offer programs focused on those front-line, healthcare heroes—nurses, physicians, public health workers among many others—who truly make a difference in the health of Texans all over the state. Among our healthcare graduates, there is no shortage of fearless leaders, bright minds and inspiring advocates who are exceptionally poised to be the driving forces behind innovation and advancement in the medical landscape of Texas. Sam Houston State University’s long-standing mission, values and traditions, and shared history are what connects us, helping pave new roads and better futures. It’s not a journey that I, or anyone here on campus, can walk alone. We need everyone. This issue of Heritage recognizes you, our alumni and friends, whose support helps make the difference between simple success and our ability to achieve real and sustainable breakthroughs. This issue also celebrates our students and our faculty and staff. Thank you all for sharing in our journey.

Primary care physicians are needed now more than ever. SHSU has a plan. While the wave of hospital and health center closures in small Texas towns has been on-going for years, the healthcare disparities rural communities face became even more painfully obvious during a pandemic. First responders describe “serious devastation,” as coronavirus surges left critically sick patients stranded in rural areas without the care they needed. While a large city offers a wider variety of options for healthcare, in a rural setting there may be only one community hospital serving a vast region, and fewer physicians in practice. “If there’s a problem, like the pandemic, the rural community hospital can quickly become overwhelmed and unable to make suitable alternatives for patients,” Dr. Charles Henley, dean of the Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSU-COM) said. “A community without healthcare is vulnerable. That’s a good reason to support rural practice, and also the education and training of our future physicians at SHSU.” Last August, the SHSU-COM officially launched their first class, enlisting 75 students to address the physician workforce shortage in Texas. Providing access to primary care in rural regions is one of the focal points of the SHSU-COM. By recruiting students from targeted areas, the college can train student-doctors who return to those same regions for residency training and future practice.

“Studies show that med students graduating from an osteopathic college are more likely to practice in rural areas,” Henley said. “Our recruitment is focused on those from rural and underserved areas. This helps us build a pipeline of qualified medical students who are more likely to return to their communities and serve those regions of Texas where the care is most desperately needed.” Responding to a need Just as America saw a huge increase in the number of men and women entering the military to serve after 9/11, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought similar changes in healthcare. The heroic dedication of medical professionals on the front lines has inspired many young adults to consider a career in medicine. “Medical applications have gone up in the last year because of COVID,” said Dr. Shannon Jimenez, associate professor and Chair of Primary Care and Clinical Medicine, SHSU-COM. “People are seeing how doctors are desperately needed to solve the crisis, and primary care physicians are the heart and soul of medical care.” In fact, as of Jan. 2021, SHSU-COM had seen a 51 percent increase in started applications and a jump of 48 percent in completed applications, compared to the 2020 enrollment year. That spike reflects a national trend. Applications at medical schools across the U.S. are up a record 18 percent, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. For the upcoming Fall 2021 academic year, SHSU-COM’s second class will number 112 student doctors, followed by 150 each year after.

Stretchedto the Limit
Even when there isn’t a pandemic, finding the right doctor can be tough in a small Texas town. A recent Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) study indicated that thirty-five percent of registered voters in a survey last year said they’d had trouble finding a doctor. Although Texas is 2nd in the nation for population grown, the state ranks 32nd for total medical student enrollment. Texas also ranks near the bottom (47th) for number of primary care physicians. SHSU-COM was established in response to this shortage and is focused on the Eastern region of Texas. Over 80 percent of the counties in Texas are designated by the federal government as Medically Underserved (MUA) or a Health Profession Shortage Area (HPSP).

Madisonville, Texas resident, George
Dunn, is 68 years old. In 2006, he underwent surgery to remove part of his kidney and for the last 15 years he has experienced dire situations on the road in need of healthcare but living in a region without enough resources. “I can’t count the amount of times I have had to make that drive. It is rough around here having people who need help and can’t get there,” Dunn said. “A lot of folks around here go to the hospital emergency room and are sent on their way to The Woodlands or Bryan. You can’t just drive all that way if you are laying out hurting and trying to make it to the hospital. When I had to make those trips, I would almost cry.”
Dr. Courtney West, associate dean of Educational Affairs for the College of Osteopathic Medicine at SHSU, was born and raised in Madisonville. She has witnessed the many challenges of those seeking healthcare in a rural community. “There isn’t access to urgent care centers in these rural areas, so sometimes the only access point you have is the emergency room,” West said. “As a result, some smaller critical access hospitals provide primary care for those in need, but people often don’t go until they are really sick and then may get sent to Houston or Bryan/College Station anyway.” SHSU’s mission is to create a pipeline of primary care doctors
to these areas by attracting rural students. “As a teacher in Madisonville previously, I never saw anyone from a medical school come in and talk to our students about a path to careers in medicine,” West said. “Creating a pipeline of students is a driving force for us. There are a lot of talented students in these rural and underserved communities who would pursue (or could pursue) medicine and having someone to talk to about it helps a lot. We want to give that type of support and resources, to show these students that there is an option, and this is how you get there—to serve your community and help people like Mr. Dunn.”H Vol. 21

t over 29.36 million, the population of Texas is the second largest in the U.S. and is expected to double by 2050. In response, existing healthcare is expanding rapidly. Not surprisingly, there has been an explosion of interest in public health education. The latest degree program in the Department of Population Health demonstrates Sam Houston State University’s continued commitment in responding to workforce needs. Ultimately, the focus on job demand in 2021 led to the creation of the new Master of Public Health degree. The 42-credit hour program is designed to be completed in just 22 months, over four regular semesters and one summer semester. What is a MPH degree? When it comes to the sport, Sam Houston State University has a long history of Bearkats competing and achieving at the top. In fact, 2019 marked the 64th year SHSU qualified for the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s College “They came here to rodeo, but I always emphasized education.” National Finals in Casper, Wyoming. Team coach Bubba Miller, who calls all his team members “champs,” said he is proud of what they continue to build at SHSU. “I believe each kid will get exactly what they put back into this sport,” Miller said. “If they’ll train hard, work hard and do what they’re supposed to do, they’ll see themselves rise up and be the next national champion.” Miller (‘97), who graduated from SHSU and was a rodeo team member, knows there is a reputation to uphold. Taking the job at Sam as coach in 2008 was likely intimidating, considering the legendary boots he had to fill. Alumnus L.N. “Sonny” Sikes (‘55, ‘57) started at Sam Houston as a student and member of the first national championship team. He won four national titles during his years as a collegiate cowboy. After returning to his alma mater in 1959 as an agriculture professor and the team’s rodeo coach, he led eight national championship teams, numerous individual View the new student champions, and secured the best win record of any college or university in the nation. It isn’t just about riding; it’s about building a future.” Sikes retired in 1997, but it has never stopped him from enjoying what he loves most. He continues to stay connected to the rodeo program. The Sikes Family Endowed Scholarship he established in 2004 awards students each year competing in rodeo. “I bleed orange and Sam Houston has been super to me, so I try to give back a little bit of what they gave me,” Sikes said. n the Sam Houston State University School of Agricultural Sciences, innovative career paths have been developed for students by addressing the needs of industry employers in a new partnership established with Mustang CAT. As a Caterpillar equipment dealer providing construction equipment, machinery and power systems, Mustang CAT has had an informal partnership with SHSU’s Agricultural Engineering Technology (AGET) program since the late 1990’s with company guest speakers, participation in campus career fairs and student field trips to their facilities. Recently, that partnership grew even stronger through a new agreement; thanks to the help of Scott Weaver, service manager for Mustang CAT and SHSU alumnus. The former agricultural mechanization student believes this initiative will offer new recruiting prospects for his company and give graduates a competitive edge entering the industry. “Mustang has a long history of hiring excellent SHSU agricultural engineering and agricultural business majors, but even as skilled as these students are when they enter our workforce, it takes another one to three years of on-the-job training to really get them up to speed with what we do,” Weaver said. “By partnering with Sam Houston State, we are able to add a focus on the business, finance and management skills needed in the heavy equipment industry as students receive hands-on product

training aboard the latest Caterpillar machines.” Through the collaboration, SHSU will soon offer a new course of study that provides both a classroom and on-site educational experience to agricultural sciences students related to modern construction equipment. SHSU’s power machinery management degree concentration (slated for Fall 2021) will add a focus to the existing agricultural engineering degree plan. According to Doug Ullrich, Chair of the School of Agricultural Sciences, agricultural engineering technology students will now have modern Caterpillar equipment and technology resources available to use in several classes. “Students will be able to learn theory of operation and maintenance, as well as how to use diagnostic and maintenance scheduling technology specific to power machinery equipment,” Ullrich said. “The skills learned and practiced in these classes are highly sought after in the industry and these students will be very marketable.” In Ullrich’s view, the partnership between SHSU and Mustang CAT is a major game changer. “It is the first agreement linking a world class heavy equipment corporation with a university,” Ullrich said. “This is huge as a recruiting opportunity—not only for the AGET program but for the School of Agricultural Sciences and SHSU as a whole. It also opens the door to similar agreements linking higher education to the needs of the workforce in Texas and the nation.”H
Dyke Rasco (’80) B.S. Agriculture Vice President of Parts and Service Operations, Mustang CAT “The SHSU education I received, along with the support from faculty and staff, was instrumental in me working for Mustang CAT today. My professor Dr. Harrell even convinced me to go to the interview and take the job. That personal support I received at SHSU, and also afterwards during my early working career, was invaluable.” Scott Weaver (’03, ’05) B.S. Agricultural Mechanization, M.S. Agriculture Service Manager, Mustang CAT “The coursework I learned at Sam Houston State has been exceptionally valuable in my career. My professors, the late Dr. Billy Harrell and Dr. Joe Muller, took a genuine interest in each of us as students and pushed us hard to succeed. They taught me just as much about character and work ethic as I learned in their classes. I would not be where I am today without their support.”

In 2018, Governor Greg Abbott reappointed Scott to the Texas Farm and Ranch Lands Conservation Council (TFRLCP). The council’s mission is to protect working lands with values for water, fish, wildlife and agricultural production. After attending SHSU, Scott developed a successful career and retired as the executive vice president of Port City Stockyard Company. He is now focused on passing something down to the next generation of agriculture. “I enjoy giving back my time and I am very proud of the program at Sam Houston State,” Scott said. “The average age of a rancher is way up there and this new generation is stepping into a business that is very tough. IN MEMORIAM* A farewell to...
REMEMBERING HARLEY REX In 1962, Harley Rex accepted a professor of music job at SHSU. While he taught for 35 years and was involved in a number of music activities, he was best known for the class he started in 1982, History of Jazz, Pop, and Rock & Roll. For 12 years, the class had an enrollment each semester of 800 students and a waiting list of 200. Rex also created a music therapy curriculum in Criminal Justice, the first such program at a university. In conjunction with that effort, he was part-time music supervisor within the Texas prison system and band director for the annual prison rodeo. His 10 band/choir directors and music therapists in the prison system provided a music program for more than 5,000 inmates per year for 20 years.
