SH ELITE SH ELITE (Establishing Leadership In & Through Education) is a minority male initiative established in 2010 to help increase minority retention and graduation rates. The purpose of the SH ELITE program is to enable African American and Hispanic men to transcend the status quo in minority male academic, professional, and personal success. SH ELITE supports the achievement of African American and Hispanic men by facilitating personal and professional development through leadership, academic support, and civic engagement.

EVOLVE Similar to SH ELITE, the overall intention of evolve is to provide retention based support services for female students, especially our transfer population. We want transfer females to start and finish at Sam Houston State University. In the development of evolve, we learned that most female students want to be involved and connected to the University as well. So while Transfer females are the primary target – the program is open to any female student (sophomore and above) who is looking for connection, academic support and service opportunities. Evolve is comprised of four program components that not only complement one another, but also provide holistic educational experiences and opportunities for female students. Our mission is to help students evolve as scholars, as women and as professionals. Both ELITE and evolve offer program participants priority registration and have opportunities to earn a textbook scholarship.

FIGHT SONG The Sam Houston Fight Song is based on the chorus of Semper Paratus, used by the US Coast Guard. The school held a contest and students submitted their Fight Song lyrics. After a vote by students, the Fight Song written by Sam Houston State Teachers College students Patti Morton and Florence Hughes was selected. The Fight Song, which debuted November 27, 1947, is played at all of SHSU’s sporting events.

Sammy the Bearkat Sam Houston State University’s beloved mascot.

Fight, fight you Bearkats! Fight on through! We’re here in back of you! You know again we’re here to win So fight until the end.

FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! Loyal we’ll ever be and true to SHSU We’ll fight and fight with all our might For Sam Houston’s Orange and White!

ALMA MATER The Alma Mater is always sung at athletic events and occasions such as Raven’s Call and Commencement. Hail to Sam Houston, School we love best, Mighty in battle, True to the test. Bearkats so loyal, Ever we’ll be. Orange and white will lead Us to victory! Hail, Alma Mater, Hats off to you, Ever you’ll find us Loyal and true: Firm and undaunted Ever we’ll be, Here’s to the school we love Here’s a toast to thee.

Fight Song / Alma Mater

TRADITIONS AT SAM HOUSTON STATE UNIVERSITY Battle of the Piney Woods One of the oldest rivalries in the state of Texas, the Battle of the Piney Woods pits the SHSU Bearkats against the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks. The Bearkats versus Lumberjacks rivalry dates back to 1923 when the first game was held in Huntsville. Today, the game is played at NRG Stadium in Houston, and to date, Sam Houston holds a 58-34-2 edge in the series. Tree of Light Ceremony Established in 1921, the Tree of Light Ceremony is one of SHSU’s oldest and revered traditions. Although the ceremony has evolved over the years, several of the festivities have remained unchanged, including the lighting of the tree by the university President, the donation of canned food items for those in need and student group performances.

Ring Ceremony Held each fall and spring, SHSU hosts a Ring Ceremony for students and their families to celebrate this time-honored tradition of receiving their class ring. The official SHSU ring symbolizes academic achievement; it is reserved exclusively for graduates and those students who have completed 75 credit hours. Cast into the inside of the ring, as with Sam Houston’s ring from his mother, is the word “Honor.” On the eve of the ceremony, the ROTC escorts the rings to General Sam Houston’s home, located on the grounds of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum, where they are housed and guarded overnight. Bearkat All Paws In With SHSU’s motto, “The measure of a Life is its Service”, it should come as no surprise that one of its largest traditions focuses on service within the local community. Bearkat All Paws In is the largest volunteer initiative at Sam Houston State. Since 2010, Bearkat All Paws In, hosted by the Student Government Association, has completed more than 10,000 hours of community service to the university and Huntsville area.

Homecoming The notion of Homecoming was introduced to college campuses in the early 1900s as a fall celebration of the first football game of the season. Although football made its debut at Sam Houston State in 1911, the university did not begin celebrating Homecoming until 1931. Part of the longstanding Homecoming traditions at Sam Houston include the Homecoming Parade, in which the President serves as the Grand Marshal, and the King and Queen’s Court, honoring the Homecoming King and Queen. However, for many years, from the 1920s through the 1970s, SHSU only had a Homecoming Queen, but no King. Blatchley Bell Tower You will find the Ruth and Ron Blatchley Bell tower, erected in 2005, in the area between Bearkat Plaza and the Administration Building. The bells play standard chimes every 15 minutes along with a variety of other medleys including SHSU’s Fight Song and The Beatles. According to superstition, any SHSU undergraduate student who passes under the tower will not graduate on time.

Raven’s Call One of the university’s most meaningful traditions, the Raven’s Call is an annual memorial service to remember and celebrate the lives of students, faculty, staff and alumni who have passed away within the last year.

Sammy the Bearkat Sam Houston State’s athletic teams have been nicknamed “The Bearkats” since 1923, when the university’s name was changed by the Texas state legislature from Sam Houston Normal Institute to Sam Houston State Teachers College. Prior to 1923, the varsity sports team were nicknamed “The Normals.” There are several animals, both real and mythical, that have been called bearcats. But, it is doubtful that those who settled on the name and spelling of the “Bearkat” nickname had any particular animal in mind. More likely, the name came from a popular local saying at the time, “tough as a bearkat!” There have been attempts at further changes, when in the late 1940s, then SHSU President Harmon Lowman suggested “The Ravens” as an homage to General Sam Houston’s Cherokee nickname. However, alumni were polled and “The Bearkats” won out. Since 1959, the Sammy the Bearkat mascot has been seen at Sam Houston State sporting events as well on campus. SammyPalooza SammyPalooza is now a yearly event that takes place on the campus of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. Brought to SHSU by the Division of Student Services, it has become the premiere event for the campus and is a FREE and exclusive event for the students of SHSU. There is nothing like it around and is the must-see event of the school year.

Tripod On Tuesday, January 9, 1962, a man’s best friend died. He had been the unofficial mascot for Sam Houston State for over fifteen years. The exact date of his arrival on campus is uncertain. Some reports indicate he was here in 1941, while other reports state 1948. He just appeared, with his crippled left front leg. He was a mixed breed dog, described as a “mustard-colored mutt.” He was immediately “adopted” by the student body. He had no master and no permanent home. No one seemed to know how he had become lame. Tripod, as he was named by the students, loved a parade and football games. He managed to be on the scene of all major activities. He ate at dorms or fraternity houses. He slept in apartments and dorms. He never lacked for food, affection, or medical care. He made his annual visit to the veterinarian, carried by a friend. He always managed to have a new collar when one was needed. On Friday, January 12, he was buried on the hill in front of Old Main. Huntsville Funeral Home furnished a baby casket, and the Student Senate served as pall bearers. A three gun salute was given by the ROTC. Dr. Harmon Lowman, President of Sam Houston State, paid tribute to Tripod. The band was on hand to play. Hundreds of students attended the last rites. Two full pages in the “1962 Alcalde” were dedicated to the services for Tripod. Death was attributed to old age and freezing weather conditions. Later a monument was erected to the memory of Tripod, the unofficial mascot. Engraving on the stone reads: “TRIPOD, 1941-1962, Beloved mascot, loyal supporter, friend of Students.” (Courtesy of the Newton Gresham Library Episode 28: Jan. 3, 2008)

The Sammys Hosted by Sam Houston State University and the Department of Student Activities, The Sammys is the official university ceremony that recognizes SHSU’s outstanding student leaders and organizations. 74

Traditions

Welcome Week Welcome Week occurs during the first weeks of the fall semester and serves to welcome new students to campus and returning students back to campus. Various events sponsored by Student Activities and other departments/organizations comprise this grand welcoming. Welcome Week is traditionally kicked off by New Student Move-In and continues with other exciting events like the Kat Comedy Showcase, Feast with the Raven, and Bearkat Picnic!

Bearkat Spirit Friday Initiating a sense of pride and spirit at SHSU, Bearkat Spirit Friday is a weekly program held every Friday in the fall and spring semesters. Its purpose is to encourage students, faculty and staff at SHSU to wear Bearkat apparel (focusing on the school colors, orange and white) every Friday in support of SHSU. Student Activities also distributes various items on some Fridays to students who are wearing orange and white as an incentive to support the program and university.

Bearkat Alley Bearkat Alley is the official tailgate area during football season. For every home game (and for specific away games) the Department of Student Activities hosts a variety of organizations and departments who “camp” out in a designated area at the North side of Bowers Stadium. These groups cook an assortment of foods, which in return is free for all those who attend Bearkat Alley with their Bearkat OneCard. Also, different giveaways are distributed throughout the season, ranging from t-shirts to spirit towels in order to boost Sam Houston pride. Once known as “Dad’s Day,” this event is held each fall in conjunction with a football game. Various activities include a continental breakfast, allowing families to meet and mingle with each other and with campus administrators; open houses with the academic colleges; a Bearkat Family luncheon and Bearkat Alley tailgating festivities before the big game!

FireFest This annual event elevates school spirit in preparation to play Sam Houston’s biggest rival, the Lumberjacks of SFA! As students boost their burning desire to beat SFA, they gather with fellow Bearkats to enjoy interactive games and entertainment. Firefest also hosts a pep rally with members of the athletic teams as well as performances by the SHSU Cheerleaders, Orange Pride Dance Team, Sammy Bearkat and Airkat. Come out early and stay to help us count down the lighting of the bonfire!

March to the Grave The March to the Grave is an SHSU tradition, going back to 1893, which celebrates the life and birthday of General Sam Houston as well as Texas Independence Day. On March 2, Faculty/Staff, Students, Alumni, and the Huntsville community march from the SHSU campus to Oakwood Cemetery for a ceremony at Sam Houston’s grave with various dignitaries speaking in remembrance of General Sam Houston.

Miss Sam Houston Pageant The Miss Sam Houston Pageant is an event for scholarly and influential female students on the campus of Sam Houston State University. It serves to acknowledge leaders on the Sam Houston campus and in the Huntsville community. Miss Sam Houston acts as a role model for all and a representative and spokesperson of Sam Houston State University. She upholds the highest ideals, vision, and motto of the university and the Texas State University System.
