Discover the Community

COM Student Experience Ambassadors

Research

COM Ambassadors are a diverse group of students who strive to advance the university by serving as the face of the student body in interactions with prospective students, potential donors, alumni, and the surrounding community.

SHSU-COM supports student-mentored research through mentoring and funding for scholarship development and dissemination of findings at professional meetings. The state-ofthe-art research facility supports faculty investigators for on-site student involvement in mentored research projects. National research speakers are featured at the facility with the aim of encouraging and motivating students in research.

Community Service

Standardized Patients

Community service at SHSU-COM is student driven. This means our students are encouraged to create opportunities (with faculty/ staff consultation). Current opportunities include health screenings and education at the Salvation Army, local free clinics, high school and middle school education, teen orphanages, women’s shelters, and more. What kind of service would you like to cultivate?

Standardized Patients (SPs) are trained to play different roles and score students on their bedside manner and ability to care for patients. Sessions are recorded and feedback is given to students during debrief sessions. Interaction with SPs begins in a student’s first semester.

Learning Communities

Student Organizations

Our learning communities are designed to foster socializing and organic mentoring. Students are assigned to learning communities during orientation and remain in that learning community all four years. Located on the mezzanine floor, the learning communities are a great place for studying and collaboration.

We offer over 30 student organizations that encompass a broad array of interests related to the profession, service, social identity, and health. No matter interest or background, there is likely an organization to get involved with – if not, we have resources that can help get it started.

SHSU-COM Pipeline Programs SHSU-COM Pipeline Programs aim to prepare students to enter careers in medicine. Each segment of the pipeline is intended to expose students to opportunities available in medical careers, prepare students for academic readiness and success, and support their pursuit of a medical degree.
