Required Bacterial Meningitis Vaccination shsu.edu/meningitis

At SHSU, all first-year students who have been out of high school for less than a year are required to live in university residence halls and participate in the university meal plan.

All students under the age of 22 are required, by Texas law, to be vaccinated against bacterial meningitis prior to moving into the residence halls and attending classes.

Moving into your new home is an exciting event, and we strive to make the transition as easy as possible. Choose from one of the floor plans to start your new life as a Bearkat. Dimensions are approximate and vary from room to room.

Housing Assignments Using the online MySam Housing Portal, SHSU students select their desired room and are able to make room changes until shortly before halls open. Students also have the option to choose a roommate during the application process.

Living Communities for First Year Students Agriculture Living Community

This is a residential community open to first year students seeking a career in agriculture. Participating students will live in Piney Woods Hall. College of Health Sciences: Health Careers Living Community

This is a residential community open to first year students in the College of Health Sciences interested in health careers. Participating students will live in Piney Woods Hall. Criminal Justice Living Learning Community

This is a residential learning community designed for first year students who are committed to criminal justice majors. Participating students will take a series of classes together and live in Lone Star Hall. Education Living Community

This is a residential community open to first year students with declared education majors. Secondary education majors should contact fye@shsu.edu for more information on joining this community. Participating students will live in Piney Woods Hall. Humanities and Social Sciences: People Helping Professions Living Community

This is a residential community open to first year students in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences who share an interest in a career working with and helping others. Participating students will live in Piney Woods Hall. Military Science (ROTC) Living Community

This is a residential community open to first year ROTC cadets seeking to build character and leadership skills as they prepare to become an officer. Participating students will live in Piney Woods Hall.

Pre-Med Living Learning Community

This is a residential learning community open to first year students interested in attending medical school (allopathic and osteopathic medicine). Participating students will take a series of classes together and live in Piney Woods Hall. Pre-Nursing Living Learning Community

This is a residential learning community open to first year students considering a career in nursing and who have a major in the College of Health Sciences. Participating students will take a series of classes together and live in Piney Woods Hall. STEM Living Community

This is a residential community open to first year non-agriculture majors in the College of Science and Engineering Technology. Participating students will live in Piney Woods Hall.

Living Communities for All Classifications CAM Creative Community

This is a residential community open to all students in the College of Arts and Media. Participating students will live in Belvin-Buchanan Hall. Honors Living Community

This is a residential community open to students accepted into the Elliott T. Bowers Honors College. Participating students will live in Piney Woods Hall.


Meal Plans

You’ll have four different options for dining on campus. Old Main Market on the north side of campus and General’s Market on the south side of campus have themed dining stations that change daily. The Lowman Student Center and South Paw retail-dining centers feature popular chain restaurants. Each meal plan includes Bearkat Bucks, a cash convenience “debit card” program that makes it easy to grab a meal since the purchase is simply deducted from your meal plan account. Resident meal plan options are included in the housing contract.
