Many of the Center’s research affiliates are actively engaged in training, volunteering and consulting with local emergency management communities.

THE TEXAS INVASIVE SPECIES INSTITUTE is the first comprehensive effort in Texas focused on research, early detection and rapid response to new invasive species currently impacting, or that have the potential to impact, ecosystems and produce major economic effects.

SOUTHEAST TEXAS APPLIED FORENSIC SCIENCE (STAFS) FACILITY is one of only a few willed-body donor programs in the United States. STAFS is a stateof-the-art research, education and training facility focusing predominantly on the application of forensic science to the human body. Current research includes a skeleton catalog designed to provide a reference on the shapes and sizes of bones of different genders and ethnicities. They are also exploring the various interactions of insects within decomposition.

THE CENTER FOR EARLY MUSIC RESEARCH AND PERFORMANCE is dedicated to embracing the past, present and future of music through research, performance and teaching while exploring applications of historical performance aesthetics in 21st-century musical cultures. The Center maintains an Italian organ in the style of a 17th-century organo di legno, specially built in 2015 by Giovanni Pradella.

THE TEXAS RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES (TRIES) offers unique educational opportunities for both faculty and students at SHSU. The Institute provides expertise and an awareness of current environmental issues to serve both the public and scientific communities. GRADUATE STUDENT

RESEARCH

At SHSU, graduate students conduct original research both individually and collaboratively to expand their personal knowledge and make important breakthroughs that advance our understanding of the world.

INVESTIGATING THE STABILITY OF BATH SALTS Lindsay Glicksberg received the Emerging Forensic Scientist Award from the American Academy of Forensic Sciences before graduating from the Forensic Science PhD program. Glicksberg received the award in recognition of her dissertation research on the stability of synthetic cathinones (“bath salts”), a dangerous class of designer drug. She is now employed at the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office as a forensic toxicologist.

EXPLORING PRISON CULTURE Meghan Mitchell, a recent doctoral graduate from the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology, used her dissertation as an opportunity to research the convict code. The Bureau of Justice Statistics Graduate Research Fellowship Program and The Charles Koch Foundation funded her research. Mitchell was also the project manager for the LoneStar Project, a National Institute of Justice-funded study examining gangs and reentry experiences.

STUDYING HOW BIOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENT INTERACT Criminal Justice and Criminology PhD student Eric Cooke focuses on life course and developmental perspectives. He looks at how biology and environment interact and influence behavior longitudinally from adolescence through the life course. He partners with faculty in the Department of Forensic Science to analyze DNA and quantifying hormones. Recently, he worked with the Department of Biological Sciences to quantify about 500 samples of testosterone and cortisol hormones.

USING AI IN EDUCATION Doctoral students in the Instructional Technology EdD program are collaborating with Dr. Donggil Song, assistant professor in the Department of Library Science and Technology, to develop an intelligent conversational agent in online courses. His lab (einbrain.com) focuses on the use of artificial intelligence in education, learning analytics and adaptive learning systems.

ALUMNI CAREER

SUCCESS For more than 140 years, SHSU has been preparing students to lead successful lives. Our alumni have gone on to hold prestigious positions around the globe, become leaders in their fields and make significant contributions to society.

CHALLENGING HUMAN TRAFFICKING Jennifer Miranda, who received her BS in Criminal Justice and her MS in Homeland Security Studies, is combating human trafficking as a criminal analyst for the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. The experience she gained from her coursework and capstone project for her master’s degree opened the door to this opportunity of a lifetime. Her capstone project developed from work she submitted for the Transnational Violent Networks course and focused on human trafficking.

ACHIEVING EXCELLENCE IN SCHOOL COUNSELING Dr. Jana McLain, who received both her MEd in School Counseling and PhD in Counselor Education, has continued her success in the professional arena, receiving the CREST award for counseling excellence from the Texas School Counseling Association for two consecutive years. Dr. McLain serves as the at-risk counselor for Humble ISD’s Community Learning Center, where she provides both small group and individual counseling and facilitates the mentor program and community outreach events.

RESEARCHING CANCER CONNECTIONS After receiving her MS in Biology with a minor in Mathematics, Damilola Omotajo went on to work as a research coordinator at the Baylor College of Medicine, where she biopsied tissues for future translational studies on the human gut development and cancer. Her thesis research focused on the translation within the bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides, which led her to develop a mathematical model that predicts protein synthesis levels.

DANCING ON A NATIONAL STAGE Recent MFA alumni Jared Doster represented SHSU Dance at the Spring 2019 American College Dance Association South-Central Conference held at Lamar University. At the festival, he presented his choreographic work “Umbilic,” an innovative duet that features two male dancers and a large iron sphere that the dancers dance, hang, climb and roll on through the space. The work was selected as one of 12 out of 45 dance works for the Gala Performance and one of three that represented the region at the National American College Dance Festival in Washington, D.C.

VOICES HEARD AT

SHSU

“Since my capstone was over human trafficking, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office could see I have an understanding of the problem. I do believe it gave me the access to go through the door. It showed and solidified that not only am I passionate about helping victims, but my ethics and goals and morals align with the division.”

“As a student, you learn in most classes about the convict code and prison culture. I began to question if the convict code still existed today in prisons given mass incarceration substantially changed how many people were incarcerated and who those people were.” – MEGHAN MITCHELL

– JENNIFER MIRANDA

“We are committed not just to top-notch research, but to academic-industrial partnerships that are relevant, useful and serve the needs of the broader forensic and criminal justice communities.” – DR. SARAH KERRIGAN

“The opportunities I’ve had here working with research-intensive faculty, as well as having great mentors and having a great structure for classes, have prepared me to transition into a role as a faculty member.” – ERIC COOKE
