SHINE Our 316-acre campus may seem large, but when you live on campus, you'll learn your way around in no time. FIRST-YEAR HOUSING POLICY // shsu.edu/dept/resife SHSU offers a variety of on-campus living options to thousands of Bearkats. These include female and coed residence halls and apartments as well as living learning communities for honors students and other specific majors. At SHSU, all first-year students who have been out of high school for less than a year are required to live in university residence halls and participate in the university meal plan. Once accepted to SHSU, you may submit your application for housing through the housing portal. There you can find floorplans and photos of residence halls so you can get a glimpse of your new home away from home. For more information on housing and the housing process, refer to our website or feel free to stop by our office.
REQUIRED BACTERIAL MENINGITIS VACCINATION // shsu.edu/meningitis All students under the age of 22 are required, by Texas law, to be vaccinated against bacterial meningitis prior to moving into the residence halls and attending classes. Submit your proof of immunization or an accepted waiver through the SHSU Patient Portal. Please contact the Health and Counseling Center for more information.

AGRICULTURE LEARNING COMMUNITY
In this vibrant residential community, students seeking a career in agriculture attend classes together each semester and live in Piney Woods Hall.
BEARKAT LEARNING COMMUNITY
HEALTH SCIENCES LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITY
This residential learning community in Piney Woods Hall is for students with majors in the College of Health Sciences who will be pursuing careers in the health field.
First-year students of any major reside together in Piney Woods Hall. Students in this community attend two classes together each semester and participate in various programs while making the most of their college experience.
MILITARY SCIENCE (ROTC)
CHSS LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITY
PRE-NURSING LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITY
Piney Woods Hall is the home of this community composed of students with majors in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (communication studies, English, history, political science, philosophy, psychology, Spanish and sociology) and students who are unsure about their major.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITY
Housed in Lone Star Hall, this community includes students seeking a career in the criminal justice field. These students attend two to three classes together each semester as they prepare for the criminal justice world.
EDUCATION LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITY
In this residential learning community located in Piney Woods Hall, future teachers develop academic and social connections that can last a lifetime in conjunction with the College of Education.
FIRST GENERATION LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITY
This residential learning community provides leadership development and support for students who will be the first in their family to receive a four-year degree. These students are housed in Piney Woods Hall.
ROTC at SHSU prides itself in producing quality officers by providing cadets with the tools they need to build character and leadership skills. You can find this community living together in Piney Woods Hall.
This residential learning community in Piney Woods Hall prepares future nurses to succeed in nursing school.
PRE-LAW LEARNING COMMUNITY
The Pre-Law residential learning community allows first-year students of any major who are interested in legal careers to learn about the legal field, participate in meaningful civic engagement and develop leadership skills. This community is housed in Piney Woods Hall.
PRE-MED LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITY
Students with majors in the College of Science and Engineering Technology prepare for medical school and for careers in the medical field in this community in Piney Woods Hall.
STEM LEARNING COMMUNITY
The STEM Learning Community, housed in Piney Woods Hall, is for students with science, technology, engineering and math majors. The community provides support for success in math and science coursework and a strong community of STEM faculty and fellow students.
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND MEDIA CREATIVE COMMUNITY
Belvin-Buchanan Hall is home to this residential living community open only to College of Arts and Media majors.
EASIER ADJUSTMENT Living on campus helps students adjust to university life more quickly and easily.

APPLY FOR HOUSING To apply for housing, students must first be accepted to SHSU. A $200 deposit must accompany the application. Students can apply for housing online through the MySam Student Portal (in MySam, choose the Students tab and Housing Applications to begin the application).

HOUSING ASSIGNMENTS Using the online MySam Housing Portal, SHSU students select their desired room and are able to make room changes until shortly before halls open. Students also have the option to choose a roommate during the application process.

You’ll have four different options for dining on campus. Old Main Market on the north side of campus and General's Market on the south side of campus have themed dining stations that change daily. The Lowman Student Center and South Paw retail-dining center feature popular chain restaurants. Each meal plan includes Bearkat Bucks, a cash convenience "debit card" program that makes it easy to grab a meal since the purchase is simply deducted from your meal plan account. Resident meal plan options are included in the housing contract.
