YOUR POTENTIAL
We’ve got your back! The moment you step on campus, you’ll discover a wealth of resources and unlimited opportunities to immerse yourself in the Bearkat experience. You’ll discover your passion, your purpose and, most importantly, yourself.
FIRST-YEAR EXPERIENCE PROGRAM (FYE) // shsu.edu/fye
FYE includes UNIV 1101, a one-credit-hour, first-year introduction to college studies, and First-Year Learning Communities, which are groups of students who take classes together. In UNIV 1101, you will lay the groundwork for extraordinary academic and personal growth. Explore, elevate and transform your college experience!
STUDENT ADVISING AND MENTORING CENTER (SAM CENTER) // shsu.edu/samcenter
The SAM Center is a resource dedicated to helping undergraduate students adjust to academic life at SHSU. Services offered, which are varied and designed to elevate students’ academic and personal skills, include academic advising, academic improvement mentoring and study skills workshops.
BEARKAT CAMP // shsu.edu/bearkatcamp Whether you are an incoming freshman or a transfer student, you have the opportunity to take part in Bearkat Camp and experience the spirit, pride and tradition that have been a part of SHSU since 1879. The freshman camp is three days, two nights, while the transfer camp is two days, one night.
“There are many activities happening on campus. By expanding my comfort zone and trying new things, I’ve made lifelong friends and experienced things I thought I never would.” — TYRA S.
FIRST-YEAR LEARNING COMMUNITIES (FLCs) // shsu.edu/flc
FLCs allow you to take classes with students who have the same interests or major as you. Joining an FLC provides a unique opportunity to build a supportive academic community and develop valuable friendships at the start of your first year. With residential and nonresidential learning community options and a variety of majors and themes, there is a learning community for everyone!
ACCEPTED STUDENTS AND BEARKAT ORIENTATION // shsu.edu/asbo
The Accepted Students and Bearkat Orientation Office assists students and their families as they become part of the Bearkat family at SHSU. Once accepted, students are encouraged to use resources such as the Accepted Student Checklists and Bearkat Orientation to help them complete their enrollment at SHSU. All incoming freshmen are required to attend an orientation session to help with their transition.
THE ELLIOTT T. BOWERS HONORS COLLEGE // shsu.edu/honors
The Honors College offers interdisciplinary courses and cultural and social experiences for its community of scholars. Small class sizes enable students to form fulfilling relationships with their professors and other students by allowing for optimal interaction and discussion. Additional benefits include advance registration, honors campus housing and scholarships.
FRIENDSHIPS THAT LAST
There’s a reason all first-year students who have been out of high school for less than a year are required to live in university residence halls. Research shows that students who live on campus have higher GPAs and are more likely to graduate in four years. But it’s about more than good grades. When you live in one of SHSU’s many on-campus residences, you’ll adjust more quickly to university life, have easy access to classrooms and dining facilities, and develop lifelong friendships.
