The Bearkat Promise guarantees all participating students enough grant and scholarship funds to cover the cost of mandatory* tuition and fees for 15 credit hours per semester!
Financial aid consists of grants, scholarships, loans and work study. Most aid, except for some scholarships, are based on individual need and eligibility. ■
*The Bearkat Promise does not cover other non-mandatory fees.

The Financial Aid & Scholarships Office administers more than 600 scholarships for achievement in academic, leadership, honors and extracurricular activities. SHSU uses a streamlined application, Scholarships4Kats, allowing students to be automatically considered for all relevant scholarships. Once accepted to SHSU, students have access to the online scholarship application portal.
SMITH-HUTSON SCHOLARSHIP
GRANTS are gift aid and do not have to be repaid. SCHOLARSHIPS are generally merit-based gifts that do not require repayment. LOANS must be repaid with interest. WORK STUDY provides wages for parttime employment with SHSU.
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available on October 1. For faster processing, apply online at studentaid.gov. The school code for SHSU is 003606. The FAFSA priority deadline is November 1 (Fall and Spring) and September 30 (Spring only).

The Smith-Hutson Scholarship is intent on building a community of scholars who demonstrate academic achievement, service and leadership. Students awarded Smith-Hutson Scholarships may receive financial support up to a maximum of $18,500 per academic year for up to four years for incoming freshmen. Incoming freshmen applicants must be residents of Texas, demonstrate academic and leadership potential, plan to pursue a baccalaureate degree at SHSU, demonstrate financial need, and be admitted for Fall 2021 at SHSU. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA) prior to submitting their scholarship application.
