UPLIFTMENT CENTRE

Location Sewri, Mumbai, Maharashtra Type Undergraduate Thesis (2018-19)

Scale Role

Architectural Individual

Neighbourhoods are a means of creating areas of greater social interaction and development where educational facilities or centres have served as social equalisers in uplifting a society or region. Historically, educational buildings used to be manifestations of the belief in knowledge and communicate values to children and the surrounding community in terms of the value of education and its value towards children.

Sewri is one of the areas situated along the eastern edge of South Mumbai and a large part of the it belongs to the Mumbai Port Trust where rapid urbanisation has led to poor living condition and poor facilities for its residing members.

The designs aims to create a centre that promotes values and awareness among the children and their family in the neighbourhood through holistic educational programs, which will eradicate the challenges faced by the community and will empower and uplift the condition of the neighbourhood. An upliftment centre tries to integrate educational programs and community programs to help each other grow and learn.

Filler slabs are based on the principle where simply supported slabs are subjected to compression on concrete from above and the lower parts experience tension. Hence, steel reinforcement is provided below and the extra concrete is replaced with filler materials in lower region. Here, Mangalore tiles are used as a filler material for concrete.

North-East Facade

The North east facade of the building houses classrooms and learning spaces which require adeqate amount of light for activities. Hence, to reduce reliance on artificail lighting and increase the amount of daylight, the fenestrations or windows are projecting outwards to gain maximum daylight coming from east and northlight coming from north direction.

South-West Facade

The Southern west facade of the building receives light from overhead sun where the azimuth angle is very low and the radiation comes almost horizontal. Hence, the windows and openings are covered with horizontal louvres/shading devices paired with vertical fins which provides effective shading and ventilation against direct radiation and heat gain. The south-west facade houses learning spaces like workshop areas, laboratories and common gathering areas which hold task based activities.
