Process Work Book

Sammi Digman

This first project was created to better understand the design process and create a quick project that was discussed between partners. It was easy to communicate and being able to see their facial expressions and their tone of voice changed allowed me to better see and read their interests better in certain ideas, which would not be so easily done in an email. I felt like it wasn’t too bad showing unfinished work, I just knew I had to communicate my ideas well enough for them to envision it as well. I liked the quick pace I thought it made it more fun and challenging to see what I could get done in a small amount of time. It reminded me of those TV. game shows. It felt different than the pace than I normally work at because I tend to get distracted easily so it usually takes me a bit longer. I liked what I made I thought it got my idea across well while still being somewhat detailed. I would change the proportions of the shovel I made because it was as large as the tree.

D*SCHOOL CRASH COURSE

DOTS & LINES Gestalt is a theory of principals that are used to create patterns or relationships through dots and lines. This related to the dot and line project because we used the principles of this theory to convey a certain word. Through this project I found that it was very difficult to make a well-crafted object because I am so used to being able to make something digitally and having lines to be able to make it perfect every time whereas cutting something in real life it was very difficult to get everything even and how I wanted on the first try. This allowed me to see all the possible ways of creating a piece and how they could be interpreted. This project also allowed for me to change my perspective and look at things from a different mindset by creating ideas without illustrating them and look at them as shapes rather than drawings. After learning and now knowing about the Gestalt theory I have a better understanding of how to arrange my work and all the ways it could possibly be interpreted.

LETTER FORMS

L E T T E R F O R M S

Initially I had only worked with beginner carving and printmaking in high school a couple of times. I chose the work okay due to the many possible variations and its common use. Through working with letter forms I learned about how different typefaces and styles read differently along. As well as how different arrangements of letters can be interpreted. Along with know realizing the importance of being detail-oriented in order to get everything lined up the way it was intended without smudging or fingerprints. I liked learning the process of printmaking and learning all the possibilities but if I was to continue to work with these letters I would try to better my craft and work on a cleaner print along with aligning the letters so the descender would be clearly lower than the baseline of the other letters.

For the object iterations project I needed to choose something with moving parts so I chose my favorite bird, a blue jay, to create in different ways over and over. The object iterations were mainly created through collage, InDesign and Photoshop. Through this process, I learned more about the lifestyle of a blue jay and how many poses and ways they could be portrayed. Making the collages out of random things from magazines was the most enjoyable where as drawing was the most challenging for me. During this process I learned about some shortcuts to use in the future with Photoshop although I was already fairly familiar with the program. If I had more time with this project would dry different avenues such as making the birds very realistic or more abstract.

PSA POSTERS

For this PSA project it was important to pick something of value. This project was a realistic representation of how an artist and client would have to communicate in order to complete a design project. I thought having to communicate and not get an answer back for a few days really showed what is really could be like. This project was a bit challenging to try to convey the same message with only type, but just allowed for more focus to be put on the layout, sizing, and how the text reads. I used negative space to draw attention to the headline, opacity to create depth within the title, and importance related sizing of the texts to create a visual hierarchy. Through creating the PSA poster I was able to learn a bit more about working with InDesign, specifically about texts and fonts that I will be able to work with in the future.

20x 20 TALKS

The 20 x 20 talks project consisted of picking an artist, doing research and creating a presentation with 20 slides each timed for 20 seconds. The bright colors, layers, collages and overall aesthetic drew me into choosing my designer. Having to record myself talking was a bit nervewracking knowing everyone was going to listen to it, and it took me forever to get a good version. After watching my class mates presentations I think I would research JW and Melissa Buchanan more because their work is really intriguing and very cute.
