Is your space yours? A
las! We are again at another endyear. Time flies! Many of us will say. Well before turning the page of the new calendar – 2013, let’s agree that the changing lifestyle of a people has today brought together a set of contemporary and modern classic interior styling for spaces. Developers have a chance for major improvements in what they do. We hasten to say developers should develop spaces! We laud them for the effort for providing dwellings. You construct offices and commercial units. Take this seriously
Don’t hesitate to walk the interiors mile that shall always talk for your enviable space.
But as we look back, we say, provision of valuable spaces should begin from inside to outside. Take this seriously. Developers; you need to read, listen and act. Hey you home buyer, you have a taste. The better part of that taste is in the interiors. Indeed, allow me ask: Why settle for some builder’s house? Don’t you deserve better than that box. As the adage goes; “Think out of the box”. Rest your head where you can gaze at an inviting roof, a welcoming floor, a talking wall, a sound lighting system and a refreshing bathroom among other appealing aesthetics.
Comfort and uniqueness Friends, what is to dwell? What is found in the intimate places and spaces we contemplate as homely? Where are the dreamt about sanctuaries? Think about it. Are you in a dwelling space you hold so dear owing to the interiors? Probably or are you
6
an accomplice of undesired interiors? With either a no or yes answer there is surely some contribution you make to the interiors that make your space. Well, experience in dwellings tells me that there is always something ever-present and so powerful that’ll push you to better your space. That drive suggests a continuance of appreciating interiors and professionals who make it happen in Hotels, Offices and domestic dwellings. There’s intimacy with colour, comfortable furniture and unique furnishings. An intimate individual’s architecture of dwelling spaces is deeply entwined with the imaginative processes and preoccupations of comfort and uniqueness. In this edition, we stress the need to develop talents; such as the interior designers and home-dwellers to find the time to intimately rethink their spaces and places. This is all about style, pattern and themes. Beautiful homes thrive on ideas. In the articles: Me! An interiors accomplice…? and Cheap is expensive, as well as others that highlight on a range of quality products and services, emphasis is laid actualizing sanctuary spaces of one’s intimate style dwelling in mind. Better Homes are imagined and eventually realized owing to an ecological-like, exchange of ideas entwining the exterior - or sensitivity toward the natural world - with an individual’s intimacy with interior. As you plan to better your space we do wish you Happy Festivities and a bountiful New Year! Humphrey Odhiambo MANAGING EDITOR

The first idea-book in town!
Unfolding technologies are certainly dictating how, businesses can and should be done today, writes Rupal RACH, while sharing more about ideabook. The past few months since the 3rd Ideal Interiors Expo at the Village Market have been spent on creating the ‘perfect’ website. Being designers we don’t generally ‘prioritise’ websites, because we want people to physically see and feel our work. Well, working in the interior design field makes the calls for face-to-face engagement. This is especially true when it come to the touch and feel of textures, drape, and tone of materials. Seemingly quite a number of interior designers do not believe a picture will truly capture the essence of our work or products. Nonetheless, times are changing, technology is improving and we can finally begin to rely on websites to showcase our talents to the best of their ability. The ‘perfect’ website to me is somewhere where my personal style of design is truly reflected. I am a perfectionist, I like balance, simplicity, strong imagery and few words. As a designer I believe that my work and my products need to be on show, not the entire history of curtains!

When designing the website we kept to our design ethos, making everything simple, and easy to navigate.
Having looked through numerous websites, I realized that although they are all aesthetically pleasing, they can sometimes lack what a client really needs, or that added touch which can
help a client choose a certain wallpaper for example. Hence we decided to form what we call an ‘idea book’. This ‘idea book’ we believe is the first in East Africa.
We love to see our people’s design ideas, favoritecolours and styles. To facilitate that, we’ve uploaded hundreds of images to a Flickr account and designed a special tool that will allow client’s to create their own gallery or “idea book” right here on our website. Client’s can also upload their own images to add to their idea book or share with us, and user profiles can be edited to include information about their project for us. The beauty about the idea book tool is that you can right click and save the images onto your desktop so that images can be used for proposals or just an idea for future decoration! Short taglines or descriptions can be added to the gallery created, this can either be a project proposal (if you’re an interior designer and you want to show this to a client) or a simple description for a home decorator. The idea book in essence should help two kinds of people; interior decorators and home decorators. For both it’s a nice way to remember what fabrics and wallpapers you liked, and a reference to what can be used in the next project! Furthermore, the format is extremely professional making it the perfect presentation tool for clients! Our flickr account has over 1000 images, therefore making it suitable for any project, any room and any style. Mix and matching of wallpapers and fabrics allows users to see even the smallest of colour differences,
22
making your choice the perfect one! The idea book will help many clients and designers who don’t really have the time to drive around looking for samples. With one click, it’s all theirs saved on their desktop for a lifetime! We believe this is a decorators dream – a personal swatch library!

Cheapened
expensively As your home is worthwhile investment it’s certainly wise to have it actualized at agreed cost with an interior designer and contractor(s) who are there to answer your questions from quotations to the home occupations and beyond, writes Nyambura KINUTHIA, while stressing the need to avoid cheap expenses that end up being too pricey.
What is the cost of expensive? How do you define expensive? A perception? A belief? A myth? We are all social animals and whenever we meet, we tell stories and listen to stories... good stories and sad stories, horror stories and anything in between. In my interior design industry, the hottest story is residential and commercial spaces interior finish – what’s vogue, what’s wow, what’s trendy, what’s fad, what’s just ok, what’s sad and ...yes you guessed it...what’s horror! In particular, residential homes have many real stories as those are the spaces that our loved ones roost after the long day’s chores. As home is where the heart is as the saying goes, allow me to tell my HORROR story first...The cost of cheap. In the Ideal Interiors magazine Vol 2 Issue 007 2012 of this column, I discussed the essence ofbudgeting before starting your family dream house. Your budget will consist of your architectural drawings = check; structure = check; interior finishing design and materials = check... the later being my story.
24
Good things in life, we all love. We all aspire and work so hard for that lifestyle. Our homes interiors is where we want our personal taste defined and “expensive”ly expressed. To actualise this unique personalised, totally you, vogue dream home is where the hardest journey unfolds. So, with all exitement and energies, you hit the road to all Nairobi and beyond top –notchmaterials outletsfor your porcelain tiles, Solid wood floor planks, engineered wood floor planks, floor laminates, pacquats, PVC floor finish...the list is endless. Next is specialized wall finishes – wallmaster, terra, stucco, clading materials... On two ceiling works – gypsum, T&G... Lighting is the next on the list and you visit all the top-end electrical shops for the pendants, downlighters, mirror and picture lights among others. Phew! The purchase is done,but.... the materials must be fitted respectively ....The horror story begins.
Cheap home builders How often do we hear this statement “ I need cheap fundis for my surface finishing works, I have already purchased thematerials” (really after buying your Kes 2,500 per piece tile?). On getting the contacts, this is all familiar from the fundis “ yes I do tile-fitting, I also know how to fix solid wood floor and yes I also do plumbing works...”(say this in Swahili). Usually first-time home builders are un-informed and tend to settle on offers by this know-it-all fundis and the result is chepened home actualized by the unscrupulous. So you as the home owner have now picked your “cheap” fundi and entrusted him to lay your master bathroom tiles and other fittings worth over Kes 700,000! If that’s the case, the below analysis is ceratinly for you? In a four bedroom home, materials cost + labour. Calculate labour at Kes 650 per day, 8 fundis, 60 days work. Above is the horror reality check ; by the time your interiors work is complete, you will have replaced 40 percent of damaged materials. You’ll also have lost months owing to delayed work, the design pattern and clarity will be a nightmare (if the fundi understood it from the begining). Simply put: Your home will look like patch-work gone wrong.
The “expensive” way Your house interiors will require coherent design, professional and proper fit-out cordination and a trained eye to achieve quality finish. Each space – floor, walls, plumbing works, electricals, ceiling works, window dressing etc will require specialisedsub-contractor(s) to achieve an overall quality work and long-term durability. They make sure products and materials are installed properly and competently and adhere to performance standards. It is imporatnt to note that site supervision
and cordination MUST be professionally done by a professional interior designer whose designs will be followed by all. On this column,Ideal Interiors Vol 2 Issue 005 2011, I detailed why you must engage an interior designer in your project, their role and the point of engagement to save you from busted budget. Let us do a comparative costings when home owners do what is professionaly right and engage professional services. INDUSTRY FOCUS
Me? An interiors accomplice... Thanks to Ideal Interiors magazine, the annual inspirational Interiors Expo and the changing industry writes Robert YAWE as he asks asks if you are taking any action to stop heinous crimes deliberately executed by some developers on the spree of killing the taste of interiors.
In a previous article in Ideal Interiors magazine, I declared that someone was intentionally eliminating our interior designers and by extension our interiors. Those accused of the heinous crime continue to serially execute their mandate unabated by the suffering consumers of mediocre interiors. Fortunately all is not lost, yet.
26
Having realised that I was an accomplice to this crime, I decided to take action instead of just sitting back and watching the carnage to our interiors continue. Undoubtedly, the best place to start was with me. To begin with I sorted out the issue of door swings in our home so as to provide the
occupants with an increased level of privacy that they were not enjoying previously. Next was the use of the available space, being a techie family, we have multiple computers strewn around the sitting and dining room placed on different assortment of tables acquired many years and carried across different houses. So I took my tape measure and a few pieces of paper on which I sketched the solution for the worktops to place the various desktops and laptops. Yet again my high school technical drafting and carpentry classes came handy.
Shape and finish After doing the sketching, I went to PG Bison to buy the required materials which I was expecting to take to a “fundi to shape and finish the pieces but to my utter surprise, I found out that PG had recently installed a CNC router. For the uninitiated, a CNC is a computer numerical control system that takes in a cutting list on one end and a material at the other then proceeds to cut the material according to the cutting requirements. Volume 3 Issue 9 || October-December 2012
INDUSTRY FOCUS It does the work often highly qualified “fundis in a tenth of the time for a fifth of the cost. The systems accuracy gives a very high level of finish and quality control is of the highest degree. So in went my cutting requirements and the selected particleboard; and voila out came the perfectly cut pieces. All that remained was the impact edging to be fitted and I was off to mount the worktops.
Gang of artisans This means that you no longer need a gang of artisans camped at your house for multiple weekends trying to fit in new kitchen doors or even the entire cabinet. All you need is a good interior designer to take the measurements then you agree on the colours. PG Bison will cut the parts apply the necessary edging and even drill the malpa hinge holes and if required you can also have the hinges fitted. Therefore, all you will need is a carpenter with a screwdriver and within a few hours, you will have changed the doors on your kitchen cabinets and even the wardrobes in the bedroom. All this will cost you at the most two Saturday mornings, maybe another one if you are ripping out the existing cabinets. This means that instead of keeping on admiring your friends glass fronted kitchen cabinets you can replace yours with the same over the coming weekend or even go over board and replace the kitchen counter and tiles.
Let the buyer customize With this kind of rapid installation, there is actually very little need for a developer to finish the kitchen or even the bedroom cabinets as the buyer can have their own cabinetry designed. Let the buyer customize and install in just a few days literally, before the ink dries on the purchase agreement. We are past the days when you needed to plane the wood even and then stick on formica with glue. Today, your cabinets come pre-finished and with a little more attention to detail they can arrive preassembled making the completion a matter of minutes.
28
Roughening a.k.a. hacking Tilling no longer requires roughening a.k.a. hacking of the surface on which they are to be placed and neither do you need to soak the tiles in water for hours. The available tile fixing glues allow you to fit tiles in hours instead of days. You can even fit new tiles onto existing tiles allowing you to replace those ugly tiles in your bathroom over the weekend without having to move house. Ask yourself, why am I continuing to live in a stressfully finished house yet I can now comfortably replace the offending fixtures?
Informant Peter Marangi Our great informant Mr. Peter Marangi can apply two coats of emulsion paint within the span of 6 hours and it will be ready to lean on, so to repaint your house in those lovely colours you have been admiring in the various magazines and the paint manufacturers colour charts is a weekend away. Another simple thing that can radically change the ambience of your space - home or office - is lighting, you have hundreds of different fittings to choose from and installation in many cases is DIY. For those who got mislead by the beautiful lighting in the show house just to find a single pendant in the middle of the rooms of the house you purchased can still fit side lighting. You can do this by installing cornices with large cavities into which to
place the wiring and even fit concealed lights or down lighters. Know for the coup de grace, you can actually change the flooring in most of your house without moving out. Today, the only flooring that might require your temporary evacuation is solid wood parquet or wood blocks, which require sanding. However, with a well-equipped contractor, this can still be done with minimal disruption over a long weekend.
Opportunity to personalize Replacing that cold ceramic tile flooring with warm bamboo wood flooring or sensual thick carpeting no longer requires your extended absentia from the house as all can be fitted without the needed for strong smelling adhesives or varnishes. With the advancements in installing finishes there is actually no justification for the developers to insist on finishing the houses to their personal taste thereby depriving the final owner from the opportunity to personalise the house. What this means is that we can stop the continued murder of our interiors, all we need to do is take a stand on the delivery of semi-finished unit by the developers. The additional 5 percent or less that you might need to spend to finish the house to your taste is worth every penny, with the alternative being a continued stress of looking at a kitchen every day and wishing you had not bought the unit. When bathroom colour really matters By Oliver ODHIAMBO
If you are an ardent reader of this copy, you must be grappling with ideas to help you transform your bathroom from a bland space into a unique and lively atmosphere that brightens your mood, day after day. You’ve seen it all too much: the white or beige bathroom with the plain tiles. No theme and no energy. It’s just there without a presence beyond what it is – a bathroom. You dream that you will one day have a magazine-quality bathroom, but you would never believe that your dream could become a reality right now, even with your limited budget. Hold on! We’re not urging you to go out and start an extensive remodeling project. If everything is in working order, it’s not necessary or cost effective to tear apart and reinstall everything.
30
Pick an easier option Although remodeling would be nice, the option isn’t feasible for everyone. Instead, you can make the most of what you already have with very minimal effort. Nurture your interior design impulses, and consider giving your bathroom a new colour. Leave everything else untouched,
and work with the furniture and décor that you already have. For between Ksh20,000 to Ksh100,000, you can take a weekend to reinvent your space to give your bathroom a revived look with a new colour. If you want to invest a little more to give your room an even bigger facelift, you can redesign your floors and tiling to redesign your bathroom’s look and feel. Based on your budget and time, you choose whether to keep it simple or invest a little more. Your options are limited to the materials that you choose to use. Select a colour scheme first, or choose your construction materials first. By focusing on one of these two options, you’ll have more direction when you select a design concept.

implications of the material that you select. The bathroom is a moist and humid environment that is perfect for bacteria and mildew to grow. For this reason, surfaces in your bathroom should be easy to clean and to keep clean. Wallpaper is a tough material to maintain. It dries slowly and can become damaged quickly even when coated with a protective vinyl layer. Because of these characteristics, wallpaper has a relatively short lifespan compared to tile or paint. Ideally, if you must wallpaper your bathroom, you should have a space that is medium to large sized and well ventilated. These types of spaces tend to be dryer and less conducive to mildew growth than small and humid spaces.
Selecting colours In general, you should limit yourself to three colours when decorating a small or medium bathroom. Four colours may be appropriate for larger bathrooms. If you work with gradients, try to stick within three or four shades. At most, choose one or two bright colours, and select a couple of complementary neutral shades to achieve aesthetic balance. Make sure that your colours work together to create an overall desired effect: try to avoid mixing warm shades with cool shades, and don’t pick colours that clash. Pay attention to the bigger picture while you plan the smaller details.
Paint or wallpaper? Paint and wallpaper are two options that you may be considering. You may find a colour or pattern that you love, and you may feel instantly motivated to move forward with that new design. For bathroom walls, paint is a durable option and will last for several years. When choosing colours, you have ultimate decision-making authority, regardless of whether you’re interested in choosing a neutral or vibrant shade. You can even mix and match colours to achieve your desired look and feel.
Using tiles Tiles are smooth surfaces that are easy to wipe down with water, sponges, and soap. Porcelain and ceramic tiles are available in a variety of colours and patterns that you can coordinate to create entirely unique designs. Choose between preconfigured designs, or create your own. Mix neutral tiles with brighter colours for subtle splashes of colour, or choose bold-coloured designs for a more dramatic look. If you would like a bathroom with an artistic look and feel, design a glass tile mosaic. You can use glass tiles in small pieces to create designs and patterns in a variety of colours. Glass tiles are ideal for countertops, walls, shower walls, and floors. You can make mosaics in a variety of shapes and sizes. Ideally, you should only tile part of your wall up to a certain height and then paint the remainder. Don’t tile for functionality alone; instead, use tiles to work with the colours that you have by creating a contrast trim or complementary shade. Volume 3 Issue 9 || October-December 2012

Floor safety

must install hardwood floors, make sure that you hire professionals for the installation. The floor should be crack-free in order to prevent water damage. Instead of installing real hardwood floors, you can install a false one. Faux-hardwood floors are made from vinyl and photos of real types of wood. Many people use these false wood designs as an environmentally conscious decision or to replicate a material that is otherwise expensive.
Use stone Stone is among the more expensive options, but it can create the luxurious look and feel of similar but more water damage-prone materials such as marble and limestone. In spite of the benefits of a luxurious look and feel, stone floors have their drawbacks: they are slippery and need to be retextured every so often to maintain traction. You can buy pieces of stone that are already textured, but you may end up spending more money. If you tile your bathroom floors with stone, make sure that you invest in some highquality bathroom rugs since these surfaces can feel cold.
Ceramic tiles No matter your design objectives, remember that above everything, your bathroom floor needs to be safe. Let’s be real. What good is a gorgeous but slippery floor that sends you and your loved ones to the emergency room? Injuries and falls are absolutely terrible, so instead of going for the shiniest and most slippery material, select a floor that suits your family’s lifestyle needs. Make sure that your material of choice has plenty of traction to avoid slipping and sliding wet feet. You also want to be sure that the bathroom tiles are easy to clean from slimy soap remnants that may lead to health hazards and accidents. The sliminess of a bathroom floor is probably the greatest hazard to bathroom safety. Your tile dealer must be sure they provide you with the right tiles that are easy to clean, and dry up pretty fast.

Rule number 1: Avoid carpets In a bathroom, they are difficult to clean and will grow mildew as a result of dampness. Imagine a carpet that is always wet, moldy, and difficult to dry. The bad situation that carpet creates will become even worse when the bathroom begins to smell like mildew. You will tempted to relocate to a town far away from that stench.
Rule number 2: Avoid hardwood Moisture will cause dramatic wear and tear in a short amount of time. If you absolutely
This type of flooring is inexpensive, durable, and water resistant: three important qualities for practicality and longevity. Installation is straightforward, and you can choose a variety of colours, styles, and shapes: square, rectangle, and hexagonal. Experiment with ceramic tiles to create unique and creative patterns in your bathroom. If you are looking for a do-it-yourself project, ceramic tiles are among your best options and are readily available. When shopping for ceramic tiles, make sure that you buy a couple of extras. If you drop something heavy, your tiles may crack or chip and can be difficult to fix. Years after you install your floors, you may have trouble finding the same or similar tiles, especially if you choose a unique colour or design. Keep spares accessible to help with your repairs. Art of window dressing Well designed window fashion do simply more than cover a window. Great design is beautiful to live with and smart, too writes Peninah KIMANI stressing that for those yearning for exceptional window fashions, the way to go is to appreciate Window Blinds.
Window Blinds’ harmony with light Just as sunscreen protects our skin from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays, window treatments protect our room interiors and add to the lifespan of valuable possessions. Wide range of window blinds is available in the market. With the blinds, one is able to regulate the required amount of light entering a room. Depending on the type and quality of blind, you can control light from 10 per cent to 100 per cent by using see-through, translucent

Getting style out of wall cladding Wall cladding is a decorative, architectural material applied to the outside of a building or inside walls of a home or office. Often a consumer or builder chooses wall cladding for the practical nature, the added style element or both, writes Humphrey ODHIAMBO. Possible materials for wall cladding are numerous and many elements are used. In the past, wood, brick or stone was always used in construction, now wall cladding give builders the option of using vinyl weatherboard, stone veneers, plastic weatherboard, steel panels, mosaic stones and cement siding with many various looks. Most of these materials are maintenance free and come in a variety of finishes, thicknesses and colors.
Variety available Many wall cladding companies offer a variety of styles and application methods. The range of cladding options has been tailored to suit the needs of many different builders, designers, developers and homeowners. The variety ranges from decorative wall panels with different textures to hygienic wall cladding that can be used

for commercial kitchens. Most companies offer professional installation, especially with certain materials. Some forms of wall cladding, like vinyl weatherboards, are designed for the do-it-yourself enthusiasts because they are quite easy to install. The appearance of a home or office can be affected dramatically by wall cladding. Often cladding has unmatched designs and the patterns add natural beauty to walls and grab the attention of everyone. It is a simple way to completely redesign a particular wall area or change the look of a house or office.
Hygienic considerations For instance, many companies are now creating hygienic wall cladding which can function appropriately for commercial kitchens. Other companies focus Volume 3 Issue 9 || October-December 2012

on high-end stone and mosaic veneers that add elegance and structure to interiors or exteriors. A stone veneer on the outside of a home coupled with new plants and rocks can transform the look of a building that was once wood siding. Plastic wall cladding protects against temperature, cold, and dampness. Cladding can also protect whatever material it will be covering. For instance, if a home has wood that is prone to dampness or insect infestation, cladding can provide a protective covering. Cladding can provide insulation on the outside or inside of a home keeping heat and air conditioning where it should be - inside your home. Energy savings on bills is an added bonus to the design factor.
42
“Green” wall cladding Many wall cladding options these days are “green” and help the environment. For instance, vinyl is inherently green compared to other building materials; it consumes less than half the energy necessary to produce brick and uses less fuel to transport. Bamboo is the ideal renewable, sustainable and environmentally friendly resource and is now being used for cladding. New or old homes will increase in value with wall cladding. There is less maintenance and improved curb appeal, plus you save on energy bills. Beauty, durability and functionality are the key benefits of this system. The variety of available materials can add charm, elegance, luxury and refinement to your home. Volume 3 Issue 9 || October-December 2012

Colour effects The taste of colour speaks and there is always a way on how natural and artificial light affects it so don’t be on the dark side of colour, writes Kate SMITH. To understand how different types of light affect colour you have to know a little about what light is, how it “works”, and its relationship to colour. All of the colours we see are a byproduct of spectrum light, as it is reflected off or absorbed into an object. An object that reflects back all of the rays of light will appear white; an object that absorbs all of the rays, black. All of the millions of other colours are produced by a combination of light rays being absorbed and reflected. Grass, for example, absorbs all colours except the ones that make up its colour of green.
46
The Effects of Natural light Natural light can vary greatly depending on the weather, the season, the time of day, the position of the sun in the sky, the location of the building and where the space is located within the building. Understanding these factors can help you to anticipate how natural light will affect a colour. Light that enters a room from the north casts a cool, bluish tint on the objects it washes over. Northern light is indirect and
can make colours appear darker and less saturated, so you may want to compensate by considering a paint colour that is a bit lighter or slightly more intense. Rooms with southern exposure benefit from beautiful warm light but at times it can be too much light that is too intense or glaring. To solve this problem use colours that are muted with a bit of grey to absorb a bit of the light so the room feels more comfortable. Light that comes from an eastern or western exposure is also warm. It cast a yellow to orange-yellow or red-orange tint that will change throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky. Light is softer and yellowish in the morning moving to intense and orange or reddish in late afternoon. Using colours that are warmer and less muted will help the colour to work even when the sun is not streaming in.
The Effects of Artificial light Artificial light supplements natural light so it is important for you to know how a space will be lit when selecting colours. The type of artificial lighting in a space influences how a colour looks. Some of the most common sources are fluorescent and

incandescent light bulbs, halogen bulbs, and LED lighting. Halogen lighting is nearly white and the closest to natural light on a clear day around noon. Fluorescent lighting is more bluish although now some fluorescent bulbs produce a light band that is close to daylight. Incandescent lighting produces a yellowish light.
How Lightening and Colours Work Together Consider that warm, yellowish light can intensify warm colours and mute cooler hues, while cool bluish light does the opposite. For example, incandescent lighting casts warm light that can enhance reds, oranges and yellows; Cool fluorescent light works best with blues, violets and greens. The value and intensity of a colour are affected by the amount of light, too. In lower light, colours appear darker and less intense. As you increase the amount of light, the value lightens and the intensity increases until you reach its true colour. Just keep in mind that too much light can make a colour appear less saturated or washed out.
While you can understand how light affects colour, choosing colours that will work in a particular lighting situation is still not an exact science. The best way to find the right colour is to view a sample of the actual colour and material in the space where you plan to use it and look at it in the actual lighting conditions of the space during different times of the day. By doing this you can see how the colour is affected by the light and make the perfect colour choice.

Enlivening old kitchens Although kitchen remodeling is one of the hard-nuts to crack, home-owners can now fortunately sail through the process with ease should they engage specialists who appreciate the taste of contemporary styles, writes Sally AGANDA. Everyone longs for a stylish yet functional home but unless the kitchen looks good and functions well, the formula to a wonderful home will always be lacking a key ingredient. storage within cabinets, give maximum worktop surface area for food preparation and offer a seamless flow between the fridge, sink and cooking appliances in order to make working easier. Apart from that, a good remodel will also consider the flooring type, which needs to be a non slip, easy to clean and water resistant. Ceramic or granito tiles or wood are often used for a safer environment as the kitchen is the most highly trafficked room in a home.
It’s important to consider that a modern kitchen is used not just for traditional cooking purposes but also as a quick dining area, a family congregation area and an entertainment area for friends. With all these considerations, a well thought out design becomes essential. A key element in increasing the functions of a kitchen is the incorporation of an Island or a peninsula. This allows for sitting on one side at either dining table height or bar stool height and working on the other side where appliances such as cookers and sinks can be incorporated. The tops for Islands and peninsulas may be in granite or wood. A good kitchen remodel will incoorporate some creative ideas in order to maximize

Kitchen Remodeling The first stage when thinking of a remodel is to gather ideas of your own through magazine and internet photos. Once you find something you like, the next step is to engage a kitchen company that undertakes remodeling as many will only undertake new builds due to the increased complexity of working in a home which people may be living it at the time. A designer will then work with you to bring your creation to life. A big difference comes depending if you go for an off the shelf product, where you will have little say on the materials, colour and design or if you go for full customization with a company that manufactures the kitchens. Here you can get much closer to your ideal look and feel and it’s often well worth it at and doesn’t necessarily cost any more than off the shelf

options. So do be sure what the company is offering you from the very start. Once you have developed what you need with the designers and placed the order, the demolition of your kitchen would usually begin. This may be undertaken by the kitchen company where it has a project management arm or you may engage a contractor or fundis depending on your appetite for involvement in the project and your budget as well.
Good planning Depending on the size and extent of the remodel, the work would involve ripping out the old cabinets, flooring, electrics and plumbing and should not be assumed to be light work. With good planning it can be done quickly and with minimal disruption to the lives of those living there. Once

all removed, the new flooring and other elements can go in, and the kitchen follows in coordination with the works ongoing. Where all this work may take longer than two weeks, it is advisable to have a temporary kitchen setup in the utility room or some other room in order to keep life as normal as possible and curb any frustrations that may build up from the lack of a functional kitchen.
Kitchen Facelift In some homes, the kitchen may be dated but have a reasonably good design and a sturdy, well built carcase. In these cases, a face lift may be all that is needed. Again a good company will be able to advise you on the most cost effective way to go about this which will typically involve replacing cabinet doors, adding
a cabinet or two, new hinges and drawer runners, regrouting tiles, a new lick of paint throughout and giving everything a thorough clean. The worktops could also be replaced to give it that brand new feel. These may often slide right ontop the existing countertop or the existing one may have to be removed, depending on how it was originally constructed. If you’re lucky enough to already have a good hardwood floor in your kitchen, then you may want to have it stripped and refinished to enhance the look. A facelift can greatly improve the durability of kitchen cabinets, adding years of life. And don’t forget your bedroom wardrobes and bathroom cabinetry, doing the same those areas will make a dramatic improvement as well. Volume 3 Issue 9 || October-December 2012

Balancing the room Successful designing for interiors is the ability to balance all of the elements in the room and lighting contributes to this measure significantly. Thankfully it’s one element that can be altered, way after the floor coverings are down and the paint is dry, writes Arleen NJERI.
The interior decoration of the room should also be prominent in your choice of lighting. Remember, dark flooring and walls soak up light while polished surfaces often create glare, light coloured walls and floors reflect it.
Table Lamps : come in all forms and sizes, the shade can be a feature or selected to blend in with the existing decoration. It should also be used to illuminate a corner or as a task light beside a chair for reading or writing.

The table lamp also features three forms of lighting; uplight / down light, task light or ambient background light. This is especially useful if it has dimmer switch.
You must be wondering how I can incorporate lighting into my home right now without having to change hard wired fittings or permanent fixtures. This is easily achievable by the use of floor or table lamps that enhance and focus on room features.

New spaces It’s essential to have a furniture plan worked out before you embark on purchasing lights for your new home. Allow for general or ambient lighting – light that shines in all directions from its source. A central light source takes care of this. Secondly, when deciding on the interior lighting for a room, consider these questions:

a) What kind of mood should the lighting create? Candles hardly provide light, but they do come in handy for setting a romantic mood. b) What different activities take place in the room? Obviously, you should have various intensity of lighting in different rooms, by adding dimmer switches and by alternating your various lighting fixtures. Make rooms interesting by varying heights to add depth or separate areas of lights and shade. To summarize, use these lighting design tips to help with your decision making for the interior decoration of a room, the furniture placement, the function and activities to be performed in the space as well as budgetary and aesthetic issues. Metallic touch You don’t need to live in a palace to enjoy the beauty of a shimmering gold frame, silver accessories or bronze statues. Decorating your living room with metallics, whether in their true form, or mimicked in fabric, is a great way to add edge and sophistication to your home, writes Oliver ODHIAMBO. Choose a few key pieces, or turn your living room into a melting pot of gold, silver and bronze by following this breakdown of the best ways to decorate with metallics. Pillows: Pillows are one of the easiest ways to throw a splash of metallics into your living room. Try adding a gold, bronze or silver pillow on an armchair, or bundle two or three of the metallic shades on couches.

Whether they’re smooth, shiny vinyl, painted leather or simply metallic fabric weaved into beautiful patterns, these pillows add an instant, but easily removed, touch of metal to the room. frames offer the perfect place to play up your living room’s style. For the traditional look, best for formal living rooms, choose an ornate gold frame for photos, paintings or mirrors. Look for styles with intricate detailing and flair, playing up the gold’s innate decadence. Debunking décor myths The world of interior décor and design has fast gained popularity in Kenya and people are now more conscious of aesthetic appeal and elegance in their living and working spaces, writes Lydia OPWAKA. Regardless of personal style, size or location, a lot of time and energy goes into design, and while taste and preference takes priority in this exercise, most people’s decisions are influenced by traditional décor myths. Well, they are just that – myths – and as we delve deeper into design, we demystify some of these myths to help you create a personal space that’s beautiful and inviting.
Décor Myth No. 1 Walls painted white make a room seem large This couldn’t be further from the truth. While white is a good colour on the wall because it is clean, it is monotonous across the wall. While most of our homes have this feature, it is good to change this myth. Uniformity in colour makes the eye steady, thus it doesn’t matter what colour is on the wall, whether black, yellow, orange – uniformity is what makes the room feel larger, not the colour. Remember, different colours may make a room feel small and cluttered, but they do instill a lively and intimate feel in the room.

TIPS
Décor Myth No. 2 The sofa must be placed against the wall Common with 90 per cent of Kenyan homes, this is a myth that we must dispel at all costs. Who said that the sofa has to lean against the longest wall of the room? Try to be creative with the placement of furniture. Place the sofa on the opposite side of the wall, or create a walk way between the sofa and the wall, or place it an angle? One does not need to place furniture the same way it was done in your mother’s and grandmother’s home. Experiment and you will be pleasantly surprised.
Décor Myth No. 3 One must buy a whole set of sofas that match This is another myth that guides most homeowners when building, renovating or re-designing the living space. One does not have to have the same sofa set – different is special, so choose to have one three seater and a vintage seat at a strategic corner. Apart from being unique, this gives the illusion of space and makes movement easy across the room.
Décor Myth No. 4 The living room must have a carpet As is the trend, every home today features a carpet (usually one that covers the whole living room). This is one of my greatest pet peeves. With the wide variety of quality rugs in the market today, why do most homes have the rough, washed out brown detailed carpet? Also, must there be a carpet even during the hot season of January? Well, if there must be a carpet or rug, opt to have small fluffy rugs that compliment the features of the room. Shop around the décor and furnishing stores and you are sure to find something beautiful and inspiring that doesn’t make your home, office or hotel bland.
Décor Myth No. 5 The ceiling must be white soft-board White soft board ceilings are the common norm because of the ability to spread light across the room, and closer home, we in Kenya are known for sticking with what we know and are sure of – and that is soft board ceilings. There are very many kinds of ceilings in the market today like gypsum, hollow, coffered ceilings among many other styles. As I had mentioned earlier, a light colour in a space will draw. Whether you have a white ceiling or not depends on how you want peoples eyes to move across your room.
Decor Myth No. 6 The room must have lots of furniture Most people think that if the room is full of furniture, it makes the room cozy and inviting. In the real sense, it will be cluttered and stuffy. Fewer and bigger pieces of furniture are more efficient and more effective in any room. An uncluttered room has a certain allure and makes people want to stay longer and not feel claustrophobic.

How to brighten a dull room Lighten and brighten First, be sure that your windows are being used to their greatest advantage. Keep your windows clean and use sheer, light hued window treatments that let natural light into the room. If privacy and light control are issues, shade or blinds can be used below sheers and drawn when needed; or heavier outer curtain panels can be open for daylight and drawn for privacy.
If you’ve ever had a home on the Kenyan real estate market, your agent likely told you to turn on all the lights and pull back the window treatments whenever the house was shown. This is because a room that is light and bright is naturally attractive, inviting and welcoming, writes Rose ANDARO.
Accentuate natural light with artificial lighting; choose soft white incandescent bulbs for the most natural glow. Recessed lighting is a subtle way to add overhead lighting and still keep the scheme streamlined and clean; track lighting installed on ceilings or high on a wall can direct light where it is needed, to highlight a seating area or striking canvas art. Wall sconces are an excellent way to bring light to a corner or entry where natural light is at a minimum. Directing lighting upward toward a light coloured ceiling will make the room seem brighter. Use table lamps and floor lamps for added ambiance and task lighting throughout the room. Lamps will have greater impact and provide more even lighting in a room if they are all arranged at approximately the same height.
On the other hand, a room with small windows can seem dark and inhospitable. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Importance of colour Creative use of lighting, colour choices, use of mirrors and Colour can make a room feel darker or other accessories, such as a metal wall hanging décor with lighter. Light pastels and neutrals reflect reflective qualities, can make even a naturally dark room seem light and make the space feel lighter; continue the light colour right up onto the cheerful, bright and appealing.

Select bright and open accents Choose accents in reflective materials such as crystal, glass and metal to reflect light. Glass topped tables reflect more light than wood, and polished surfaces are more reflective than furniture and accents with dull rough finishes. Accents and wall dĂŠcor metal in silver and chrome are more reflective than brass or bronze. All this reflection helps keep light brightly bouncing throughout the room. Soft or firm mattresses: take a pick By Marie Amanda
Innerspring Mattresses
The debate between soft versus firm mattresses has continued for decades, with benefits and drawbacks to both options continually presented here in East Africa.
Innerspring mattresses are the most common type of mattresses. They consist of a spring zone and a comfort layer. The innerspring is the source of support and provides proper spinal alignment while you sleep.
While some people prefer the stable support of harder, less forgiving mattresses, others choose softer and more lenient beds to spend their nights on. With the selection of mattresses increasing constantly, use this breakdown of mattress styles, functions and options to select which design and material is right for you.
Contrastingly, more and more mattresses are marketed purely for comfort, claiming to mimic the softness of sleeping on a cloud. While sleeping comfortably is an obvious aspiration for most people shopping for a new bed, an aching back lacking adequate support clearly presents an obstacle to a good night’s sleep as well.
Comfort vs. Support
With all of the different types of mattresses available, finding the one that is right for you can be confusing. So let us take the guesswork out of your decision by explaining what makes them different and what each type of mattress has to offer. The most common types of mattresses available are traditional innerspring mattresses, latex foam mattresses and visco-elastic memory foam mattresses. Here is a brief guide on the features and benefits of each type.
One difficulty in the pursuit of the perfect mattress is the division between comfort and support. For years, hard mattresses have been recommended as essential for proper back support, and the only option for maintaining healthy spine alignment during sleep for people who are of the age bracket 15 - 45. Younger and older people were to sleep on soft mattresses owing to the delicateness of their bones.

Beneath the ticking of the mattress are the comfort layers that cushion your body at the sleep surface. The combination of various foams and fibers provide varying levels of softness and comfort. Pillow Top mattresses include additional comfort layers on top of the mattress for additional supportive comfort at the surface.

Latex Foam Mattresses
Memory Foam Mattresses
Latex foam mattresses are quickly gaining popularity with today’s consumers. These mattresses feature a latex foam core as the support system, rather than the traditional innerspring.
Memory foam mattresses feature a visco-elastic memory foam core as the support system, rather than the traditional innerspring. Like latex foam, memory foam’s ability to deliver both comfort and spinal support allow the foam to act as a support system in lieu of a traditional innerspring.
Latex foam is extremely resilient and breathable which helps to reduce the heat buildup typically associated with allfoam mattresses. Its unique construction allows it to instantly respond to the body to provide a high level of comfort while helping to promote proper spinal alignment. These qualities allow latex foam to act as a support system in lieu of a traditional innerspring.
Memory foam responds to your body temperature by softening under warmth, allowing the foam to contour to your body when you lie down. However, this also creates a disadvantage because memory foam can sleep hotter than other foams.
Memory foam can help to promote a more restful sleep because it provides significant pressure relief to help reduce tossing and turning that can cause an individual to toss and turn, wake up and shift positions during sleep. Plus, motion transfer is drastically reduced as it absorbs movement without affecting the other parts of the mattress. Memory foam is typically denser than other foam mattresses. This makes it very supportive, but also heavier. It can be considered a good compromise between the comfort of a soft mattress and the support of a firm one for those who prefer a foam core mattress.
Orthopedic mattresses These have hit the market with a bang owing to the fact that they do not only offer comfort and a good night’s sleep, they also help align the body structure appropriately, thereby providing valuable health support. The likes of Dr. Matress and Vitafoam are big on these products. Other firms such as Bobmill and 5-Ways have also cut a niche for themselves in the mattress market, and have offered the necessary ingredient for a competitive market meant to satisfy the needs of the consumer who is constantly seeking for better products. The choice therefore is down to the buyer, to decide if it is the hard mattress or the soft one. Someone has to make a good decision here. The market has all these mattresses. Just trudge in and pick one. Volume 3 Issue 9 || October-December 2012

Choosing art for your bedroom By Florah MUMBUA
You walk into your bedroom, drop your bags on the floor, sprawl across your bed and relax. Your bedroom is the ultimate personal sanctuary. It should feel comfortable and warm, while providing an outlet for self expression through design. Not only should you feel proud of your most personal living space, you should make it your own. When it comes to choosing the right dĂŠcor for your room, you have to remember to select pieces that represent you. Not everyone is an art connoisseur, but if you keep these four things in mind, you might be able to win over even the toughest art critic.
62
1
Take measurements
Like all aspects of home decorating, it is best to be prepared. Before you hit the streets for a day of art stalking, grab a tape measure and take notes. Measure the walls you want to decorate, and have a general idea of how you want the art to be laid out.
If you have pieces that you want to buy frames for, measure these too. Nothing is worse than coming home with the perfect find, only to discover it doesn’t fit.
2
Use your current style
Nothing can kill a great selection of wall art like a horrible style clash. Make sure you take into consideration the overall personality and vibe of your room. Furniture is just the beginning; you want to make sure that your bedding, flooring, paint and room accessories all go well with your latest artistic additions. Volume 3 Issue 9 || October-December 2012
BEDROOM If you’re rocking some vintage furniture and a wall full of records, you might want to hit your local music store for some classic concert posters. If you’re wild about nature, you can pick up some landscape pieces at an art gallery or museum. You don’t have to go too crazy with the theme, however. If you want to mix a bit of retro and modern into your design aesthetic, go ahead. It’s your bedroom!
3
4
Finish with great presentation
Make sure you have provided ample space for the artwork you’ve selected. Pick one wall to serve as the focal point, and use it to moderate the rest of the placement. Proper spacing and lighting are also crucial.
If you are a married couple, you must think of a romantic setting that will brighten your moods when you walk in. Think of romantic art that you love. The secret lies in creativity and thinking out of the box.
Don’t crowd your wall space, or neglect to use natural lighting. Larger pieces should be placed opposite windows to make sure they get the right amount of visibility. If you have several smaller pieces, be sure to space them out across your room, instead of crowding them all in one corner. Make sure that as you hang your wall art, you take a step back to make sure everything is still cohesive.
For singles, this is the time to think eccentric. Avoid art that will show you are lonely and are craving love and company. Your acquaintances might think you are in desperation if you hang model posters on the wall. Look for art that will show you are proud of your single status.
Your bedroom should represent you. Manipulate the blank space of your walls in your favour. There’s nothing wrong with waiting around for the right piece, but don’t be afraid to play around with several themes and styles before you settle down with one.
Getting the mood right
Remember, the best pieces of art aren’t the ones that cost thousands of shillings, they’re the ones that mean something special to you.

9 ways to get chaos out of your closet
Closets are never big enough. Most people dream of the kind of closets you see on TV, complete with a lounge, rotating rack of clothes, and a giant box of chocolates. However, our lives are not a television show or a commercial for a highend supermarket, writes Hilda OTUGA.

BEDROOM TIPS
I’m doomed to deal with impossibly small closets, and an undeniable desire for shopping. If you find yourself faced with the same dilemma, use these tips to take the chaos out of your closet.
1
Don’t buy into fads:
If you’re prone to staying up until all hours of the night, you’ve undoubtedly seen a rash of commercials telling you to buy the hottest fridge, the coolest oven, or the most efficient closet organization product.
While they may be tempting, and they always are, these “innovations” are usually not the miracle product you’ve been seeking. They’re mostly cheap versions of common household items like hangers, or storage boxes. They may be flashy, but they’re mostly unnecessary. It’s like trying to reinvent the wheel, and like the saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
2
Don’t let suitcases go empty: Suitcases are big,
empty, space-devourers. Put your suitcases to work when you’re not traveling by using them to store out-of-season clothing or unused linens.
3
Make sure you can see everything: If you
can’t see it, you won’t use it, and it’s just taking up precious space in your closet. Make sure everything is visible and within easy reach. If you must store something in a container that makes it difficult to see, be sure to label it so you know what it is, when you need it. This will also prevent you from buying duplicates of items because they are “lost” in your closet.
Volume 3 Issue 9 || October-December 2012
4
Utilize levels: Just
because you have one clothing rod at the top of your closet doesn’t mean the space below needs to go unused. Install another rod or put a short set of shelves underneath. Relegate longer items like dresses and coats to one side in order to make space for the storage underneath. Also, don’t forget the space available above the rod. Mount a shelf for blankets or knickknacks.
5
Simplicity over space: Don’t shove things into
the deepest, darkest recesses of your closet just because you feel like you have to use every inch of free space. The truth is that most of those things will get lost until you move out. Favour simplicity and visibility over using every inch of space.
6
Use stackable laundry baskets:
Laundry baskets are huge, and if you have more than one, they’re probably taking up a good portion of your usable closet space. Fortunately, companies now make stackable laundry baskets for people who are “storage challenged.” These are hard to find at some stores, but any specialized store should have your fix at an affordable price.
7
Coordinate: Organize your
closet by colour or by clothing type. (All pants in one place, all button-downs in another, etc.) Sure, it may seem like a pain now, but it becomes an easy habit, like brushing your teeth, and it takes the stress out of your morning.
8
Clear it out: Some people
have made a holiday for getting rid of old clutter. Really. So put on your best holiday sweater, grab your favourite holiday drink and get started. You probably don’t wear a good portion of what’s in your closet, so try this easy trick: turn all of your hangers backwards.
As you wear an item of clothing, hang it back up, and turn the hanger to face the right way again. After six months, any clothing that hasn’t been turned around is ready for the clear out. Obviously, make an exception for seasonal items that only get used for a few months out of the year.
9
Put your most used items at eye level: This tip is simple. It saves you
the hassle of rummaging for items you use every day. It’s also a good idea for your car keys!

She reckons that one has to be particular in the selection of a generator to ensure they obtain optimum benefits from the equipment. “This modern times call for modern generators that are not only able to switch on automatically within seconds of power failure, but are also environment friendly and consume less fuel,” Ms. Tobaria says.
But the acquisition of a generator can be a fuss, especially if the user is not informed about modern power generating equipment.
For this reason, Famiar has been on the forefront as one of the continent’s leading generating systems suppliers and service providers, to ensure businesspeople have no sleepless nights over power.

major dealers in automatic power gensets, mobile trailer mounted gensets, sound proof canopies, synchronized units, design and installation as well as the servicing of generators and the products that largely handle power back up issues. Apart from the core fundamentals, what else should a businessperson look for when shopping around for a good generator? Well, for starters, each of the generator sets distributed by Famiar consists of standard equipment which include a cooling system, an engine, a base frame, a control panel and an alternator. These are factors that one must take cognizance of when selecting a good generator.

It also has an emergency stop button on the canopy as well as an enhanced air suction channels in order to provide homogenous cooling inside the canopy. “The cover on the top of the canopy provides easy filling anti-freeze to the radiator, and also a strengthened paint system against corrosion and rusting,” says Ms Tobaria. The generators are designed for ease of transportation and maintenance, safety in use and performance that creates a difference from the point of sound isolation.
Famiar has fully trained field service engineers and technicians who have the experience in looking after all aspects of the operations and maintenance of the generator equipments. The firm also custom-designs the equipment in line with client needs to ensure everyone gets just what they need. Famiar continues to be a leading entity in the market, and analysts say the firm is on course to continue a rapid expansion in all parts of Africa.
The cooling system, for instance, consists of industrial type of radiator, expansion tank, which constantly keeps the temperature of the generator sets at an acceptable level. Luckily, the engine is diesel powered, so consumption is at a minimum with output almost twice that of a petrol-powered generator. The generators must have a base frame that is strong enough to provide high level of easy transportation and emplacement with an accompanying design that is appropriate for the user’s needs. It also should be able to reduce vibration to a minimum. A standard control panel used in the Famiar’s generators will provide comfort and safety in the form of a guiding panel with proper and easy to understand indicators. This is designed in accordance with the customer’s needs. “The alternator is durable and highly efficient and has a bedding system that does not require maintenance,” Ms Tobaria says. “It also has an automatic voltage regulator that provides stable output voltage, and is globally approved.” The engine has a mechanical or electronic type of governor with sensitive speed adjustment and is ably boosted by a standard type canopy. The canopy, whilst protecting the generator set, also helps in the prevention of noise pollution. The comfortable bed and room with good quality amenities as well as personalized attention makes The Boma a preferred among frequent travelers. The journey to constructing the Nairobi based Boma was fundamentally precipitated by the need of addressing the competition on donor funding says Mr. Maringa noting that services rendered by KRCS are 100 percent donor funded. KRCS has been supplementing the government in drought mitigation through appealing to local and international organizations for the required interventions.
Perhaps, the height of fast-tracking the construction of the prestigious Boma in Nairobi; followed the recent government declaration of drought as a disaster in Kenya. KRCS chose to think out of the box while making an international appeal for a total sum of Ksh 859 million to enable it to respond to emergency needs of populations affected by drought. The government facilitated the move to put up KRCS hotel iniatives in Nairobi, Nyeri, Eldoret and has also since acquired a 3,000 acre land in Mlango, Tana River for the same purpose. According to Maringa, additional lands for putting up major hotels are on the pipeline with target places being Isiolo, Malindi and Mombasa. The society has Volume 3 Issue 9 || October-December 2012

conferencing facilities in Kisumu, Malindi and Nyeri, while Eldoret is slated to unveil the next Boma by February 2013. “Our idea is also to ensure that we keep up with the pace of development of counties as they are lined for major growth take-offs in the next few years,” said Maringa stressing that the KRCS investment ventures into the hotelier landscape is within the laws of the country. The KRCS does not get any funding from the Government. It relies on donor support and other well-wishers within the country and all over the world. As we all appreciate, this donor support is dwindling. The efforts of the KRCS to supplement Government efforts in providing relief support to affected societies, has been noted all over the country. Owing to this dwindling support, KRCS has had to find ways and means of generating income. The hotels are very well-placed to generate income to mitigate disasters that have occurred severally in the country. The birth of The Boma has come with refreshing tidings as it has so far created employment to 370 people says Maringa pointing out that the Bomas are even bound to create more jobs since KRCS vision is to have a major hotel in every county.

TIPS
Hosting the Perfect “choma” party There’s really nothing better than a great “choma” party on a soothing festive afternoon. If you love the idea of festive entertainment, writes Milkah MAINA, break out, dorn the “Kiss the cook” apron and chef’s hat, and hit the grill. Certainly, local suppliers like Sheffield Steel Systems, Kitchen Professionals, D.K. Engineering as well as Turea Hospitality have plenty of grills you may find convenient for this escapade. You may also obtain the grill at local artisan outposts in Jua Kali markets around Nairobi. Planning the perfect choma party takes the right amount of creativity and preparation, so you must make sure you cover all your bases. From picking the right food, to playing the right music, choma parties are all about having fun. Here are eight quick tips on hosting the perfect choma party:
1
Plan the guest list
Before you do anything, you need to decide how many people will be attending your party. Opting for a larger crowd will require a much more generic selection of food, while a smaller intimate group of people might allow you to get a bit more creative. Either way, you’ll want to get a proper headcount before you hit the stores. These days, online invitations and event pages are a much easier and well-received route than the old paper invites.
2
Pick the right spot
The backyard is a great place to have a choma party, but sometimes it just isn’t enough. If you need more space, or want to steer larger crowds away from your house, trying throwing your party at a public park like Paradise Lost in Kiambu or at the beach along the South Coast. Depending on the location, there is usually only a small deposit fee to hold the space. Pick a place that’s centralized to your guest list, you don’t want to force your friends to drive several miles out of their way.
76
3
Decorate like a pro Choma parties are one of the
easiest events to decorate for. Buy some blow-up party decorations and toss them around your backyard. It’s easy to theme a party because most decorations come in packages.
4
Coordinate cook times If you have a lot of food
to prepare, you might want to get started the night before. Cook any side dishes on the eve of your choma party. The only items that really require same-day preparation are the meat and the cocktails. If you’re throwing your party with a spouse, family or friends, make sure to break up the food prep between you.
5
Set the mood with music Picking music for a
party is all about having fun. No one wants to listen to easy jazz or Gregorian chant when they’re biting into a loaded hot dog.
Create a playlist that includes upbeat pop songs, classic oldies, and a few of your own favourite standbys.
S
chedule activities
Don’t expect your guests to entertain themselves. Plan some activities to take place throughout the day. Water balloon tosses and dance contests are always fun selections for an outdoor bash, but feel free to be as creative here as you were with your theme. Make sure you come up with something for everyone. If kids will be in attendance, pick out some activities for them as well. As the day winds down, trivia challenges are always a fun option.
7
Don’t get caught up Regardless of the type of party
you’re throwing, it’s easy to get caught up in the planning, and completely neglect your own enjoyment. Don’t let yourself get stuck behind the grill or running to the store to pick up lastminute items. Remember it’s only a choma party, and that you want to walk away with some good memories of your own. Whether you’re a first time planner, or seasoned professional, a choma party is one of the most fun and exciting parties you can throw. Proper planning and purchasing are key, but don’t let yourself get too caught up that you miss all the fun! Volume 3 Issue 9 || October-December 2012
