Talented minds deserve the best
T
here’s no doubt that jobs enhances people’s lives. Everyone wants something to do…and a job well done gets the banquette it deserves. Talented minds have always something to offer and for sure, we need them.
Reality shows that everywhere in the world, people want to find their lives interesting. It is for this reason that creative-minds think aesthetics and people, functionality and sustainability big-time. Such stretch of the mind creates and harnesses jobs, worthwhile products, services and businesses. In this big-time agenda, budgeting comes into play and options are found. As we began this year, a final-year creative design trainee contacted me. He squarely wanted to know why there are hardly any job adverts for designers in the creative furniture trade. Mmh! I too wondered as he’d tossed my mind to a spin with this bare truth. I held the thought and pondered how best I’d respond to the caller without sounding cynical.
Pivotal role For an industry that should be heralding the works of interior creative designers as the most pivotal role in the organizations, there are remarkably few jobs out there. The mind is disturbed because we churn out more interior designers every year from such popular universities, colleges and polytechnics across East Africa. Where might we be going wrong? Although we’ve numerous institutions training carpenters, hardly are they embraced with that high esteem yet every day, one has to use an item of their creative works. This brings about the questions of how the polytechnics are equipped. How have the interior design colleges structured their courses to ensure trainees ultimately secure and create more jobs for creative interior product manufacturers and interior designers.
Something to offer During the annual Ideal Interiors Expo, we occasionally engage with students yearning for attachments. These talented minds certainly have something to offer and can only therefore deserve the best of our industry’s support. Usually lecturers outline for trainees a course structure, which incorporates a third ‘sandwich’ year that gets the students out of the classroom into workplaces. Exposure in such environment enables the trainees return with a completely different attitude to their designs and a thorough understanding of the technical considerations of their masterpieces. They also have a good chance of returning to their work experience employers…for progressive jobs. We encourage the development of relationships that creates and connects the interior designers to webs of jobs that make the industry flourish. For one, this is about art. It’s about creating opportunities that deals with affection of people. We can’t wait for speedy growth of talented interior designers and talented product manufacturers keen to make a difference in our steadily growing East African national economies. The road-map to this effort hinges on investing on the top-of-the-range machineries and enhancing capacities in our training institutions, creating the confidence that we can as well do better and find better in our competitive creative works. The job-market is thus with us. The guarantee of its sustenance is with us. Its’ future is equally with us. Let’s close the gap. Together, we can.

Sound-proofing to shout about With the increasing trends in office and home partitioning, Jumbo Chem has hit the ground running with its revolutionary acoustic insulation partitioning materials that will keep rooms noise-free and ensure considerable cost-savings.
D
RIVEN BY THE NEED TO PROVIDE QUALITY, cost-effective and practical products, Jumbo Chem Ltd, a Kenyan based company is upbeat in promoting its partitioning solution, Jumbolene® Acoustic Insulation. Jumbolene® stands out as an efficient and trend-setting sound-blocking product that is transforming the state of home and office partitioning.
With the capacity to produce materials to client specification and within expedited lead times, the manufacturing company provides Jumbolene Acoustic Insulation in standard panels of either 50mm or 75mm in width. This ensures that material wastage is minimal per project as opposed to conventionallyused partitioning materials. However, client-specified thicknesses can also be produced per project needs.
Scales down costs “In today’s volatile economic scenario where most activity in the construction industry has drastically increased, it is especially relevant to look at ways and means that scale down costs,” says Mr. Michael Bodo, General Manager, Jumbo Chem (K) Ltd.

“Partitioning offers up to 10 per cent reduction in the cost of building and re-configuring a house. That is why, through its superior acoustic properties and effective cost management, Jumbolene acoustic solution is set to revolutionise residential and commercial construction when it replaces the traditional concrete block masonry,” Bodo adds.

The erection of conventional partitions is labour-intensive, time-consuming and needs considerable preparatory work. It is thus more expensive in the long run. Further, it does not allow flexibility for changes during the life of the building. In order for electricians and plumbers to do their job, they have to chisel the wall to perforate it so as to bury cables and pipes, which is a time consuming task.
Superior acoustic properties Jumbolene® Acoustic Insulation is a closed cell polyethylene foam used as a sandwich material in room partitioning and placed in-between gypsum or veneer boards. It can as well be used as an embodiment to existing walls. The use of the product provides superior acoustic properties and reduces considerably the noise between rooms and prevents noise from outside penetrating the office or home space.

These are the considerations we have been working upon to ensure we deliver successful as we have so far done.” It also means having sufficient manpower, equipment and constant supply of electricity to ensure the work is done faster and without any interruptions. Chummer has ensured all these factors are in play, and the firm is believed to be setting a precedent that should be emulated by other players in the industry to ensure the market is served adequately.
“As it is, we can only serve the market to a certain level, however efficient we are at what we do,” Mr. Gul says. “All of us in this segment of the market must wake up to the realities facing us so we keep up pace with the rapidly changing environment for both interiors and exteriors of any building projects in progress.” The firm has in recent months excelled so well in residential property arena, and is said to be one of the leading suppliers of stair rails, ornamental lighting fixtures, gates, fences, balconies, window frames, metallic beds, tables and chairs as well as plexi glass. Egger boards and panels take market by storm By Oliver ODHIAMBO
When I first met Mr. Ashwin Bhojak sometime in late 2011, I was impressed by his vast knowledge and experience and enthusiasm in as far as manufactured boards and panels are concerned. Little did I think his forceful revelation that Laxcon was going to revolutionize the boards and panels market would soon turn into an unmistakable reality. It may have looked like a long shot or hopeful conjecture, but you don’t take it for granted, especially when the man making these utterances is a respected industry player in this region. “This market will surely look to us for quality, because what we intend to bring to this market will definitely transform the interior design and fittings industry for our clients,” he
told me as we explored the possible impact of the products to be launched. “We are bringing Egger boards and panels closer home because it is time everyone obtained some real quality in this segment of the market,” he said passionately. “I can assure you Egger is the next big thing, Oliver. Just watch this space.” And true to his word, a few months down the line, Egger is selling like hotcake. When I visited the premise at Apex Business Centre on Mombasa Road, I had to convince myself
that indeed the rapid growth of the Laxcon Boards and Panels Division was no mere talk. The market had responded to Egger products like a bush fire and now Ashwin was having to deal with the pressure of orders from across the region. “Welcome, Oliver. It is a pleasure to have you finally come to our premises,” Mr. Ashwin said as he ushered me to the reception. He introduced me to the team members who were more than eager to engage me. For sure, I could see the customer care aspect of the business was already top-notch, for a division that was yet to last a little over one year. One by one, he offered to explain what roles they play, and I was pleased by the amount of work that had gone into bringing together such a professional team.

Catherine, who are in charge of marketing as In a little while, Mr. Ashwin handed me over well as Falgun, who had earlier taken me on a to the Operations-in-charge, Mr Falgun tour of the premise. Bhojak who later turned out to be an amazing salesman. He took me on a tour of the premise, and my mouth was agape at the warehouse, packed to the brim with all assortments of boards and panels from Egger. For sure, it was clearer in my mind now that Mr. Ashwin hadn’t been joking about this when we had earlier discussed the idea. The gigantic warehouse was just a scratch on the surface, Falgun said, and there was sufficient supply elsewhere in a storage warehouse within the city. He told me the demand for the boards was immense and so the company couldn’t take anything for granted. Stocking apparently was the only way out.
“On quality, you must know that Egger as a brand is far superior to any other brand that is currently in this market, yet the cost is as affordable as it can get and clients get value for money.”
Falgun took me through the tour, one step at a time, explaining with such expertise, every variety of the products, ensuring I understood “Whatever you saw at the reception has been conceptualized and designed by our internal why Egger is one of the world’s leading team led by Mr. Mungai,” Mr. Ashwin offered brands in terms of quality. as we got comfortable for the interview. “We want our clients to be able to see what “For sure Oliver, Egger is so respected in Europe, Asia and the Americas. This will truly transform the market here in our backyard. Clients can now have boards that can outlast their expectations,” Falgun said as we moved to the next lot of boards.
our boards can do, once they step into the reception area.” “We are striving to be the one-stopshop in as far as boards, panels, flooring and accessories are concerned.” He revisited the value addition principle, saying it is important that clients use boards appropriately to avoid wastage and therefore save up to 20 per cent on the overall cost. His team ensures this is possible. Egger boards come at a more robust 9 ft by 7 ft, which is a bit bigger than the standard 8 ft. x 4 ft. and 9 ft. by 6 ft. boards in the market. This, he says, enables for better utilization. So far, clients have posted positive feedback and have signaled their satisfaction saying Egger is a very reliable brand. Ashwin says he will continue to take cognizance of this precious trust that is emanating from the market to make Egger the number one brand in the region.
He also quickly revealed, just as Ashwin had mentioned to me, that the company goes beyond just selling the boards and panels. Additionally, the company helps its clients with the design ideas and also in the optimization on the usage of the boards. This enables the client to cut on costs and also enables the usage of the use of the board with minimal wastage. Mr. Ashwin has thus employed a designer with a proper understanding of the boards and panels concept, and can help in the design of any item that a client would want to make using the boards. Good advice is the key component here, Mr. Ashwin says as he finally ushers me to the boardroom for the interview once we are through with the tour. He introduces me to Peter Mungai, who is in charge of design, Susan Mwaniki and

“On quality, you must know that Egger as a brand is far superior to any other brand that is currently in this market, yet the cost is as affordable as it can get and clients get value for money.” Falgun explains as we get deeper into the interview. “The surface finish is thicker, and the board has a stronger substrate with superior water resistance properties. You will find any finish you want, be it wood grain, glossy, textured or uni-color melamine faced. They are all available.” As we finish, Ashwin explains that the division will bring Egger flooring in 2013 to continue offering the market a broader range of products. “We are striving to be the one-stopshop in as far as boards, panels, flooring and accessories are concerned.” Later, I bid the team goodbye and head out. For sure, I am convinced now that Egger is here for the long haul and is set to revolutionalize the industry as Ashwin had hinted in 2011.

Art to Heart Bud Panesar’s debut RAMARA Interiors Showroom stirs a tasteful homage to constructed illusions that uphold the essence of art that lives so deeply writes Muthoni Maingi. Who could look anywhere else when a lily is in the room? Viewing and being in the presence of such a beautiful piece of art is to put it mildly, thrilling. RAMARA’s debut showroom in a peaceful suburban Lavington setting, precisely along Mzima Springs Road, is an appropriate setting to showcase these alluring pieces. RAMARA’s growth, which has evolved from Bud Panesar’s designer dreams and doodles, makes a distilled difference into homes, lodges and offices of the aesthetically inclined. It is all about the depth of art to heart. RAMARA’s showroom reflects this ideal. Stunning designer accessories are set against walls bathed in white and the space is open and filled with fresh air gently blowing from a stretch of jewel-green manicured lawn that gracefully kisses a refreshing verandah. RAMARA is truly a pleasant way in which one can commission that piece for their home, office, or restaurant/hotel. After all, RAMARA is steered by a sincere wish to create a range of original, cutting-edge, high-end luxury furniture and interior products for the local and international markets. As an International Award Winning Designer, Bud is driven by a strong work ethic as well as a diligent approach to perfection and his craft. An arranged visit to the showroom guarantees that one will be served well, and bathed in the spirit of a firm that believes in their unique heritage in the furniture and interiors market. After all, Bud’s family has been creating unique pieces for us for over 70 years.
Experienced Interior Designers and Customer Experience Executives are at hand to assist one all the way to the final delivery and care of the products. RAMARA relationship is life-long as the brand believes they are in the business of creating relationships, and not pushing products. If one is so inclined, they may also meet Bud at the RAMARA Showroom and he would be happy to share a glass or two of his favorite Single Malt while he engages you in a flight of creative imagination, sketching a custom piece that may one day be yours and named after you. However, despite the grandeur of each design, the emphasis on each and every RAMARA piece is a minimalist simplicity akin to nudity. The products are not “dressed fancy”. Rather they are laid bare so that the passion, integrity and design ability that goes into their creation is as visible as the physical form of the product. This, Bud states, is “Optimal Design” or “Authentic Design”. As Bud says “A design is optimal when no one element can be added to it, nor one taken away. This is the humble ethos we live by at RAMARA.”

What do I need to know before opting for wallpaper?
T
here’s always the debate whether to use paints or wall paper on plain walls. In the past paint was always the clear winner more for practical reasons than aesthetics. Today, this is no longer the case. Now, wallpaper comes in highgrade quality and has special weather-resistant features and peeling is just simply next to impossible!
How much do I need?
RUPAL RACH dissects on the ideal and trendier wall surfacing option by responding to the frequently asked questions on wallpaper.
The first thing you need are accurate measurements of the walls that are to be covered. Use a steel tape measure. Measure the space and round off to the next highest half metre. Measure both the height and length of the wall or walls. Next multiply these two measurements to give you the total number of square metres that your wall is. General wallpapers measure approximately 5 square metres in one roll. For example;
Your wall: 2.5m (h) X 5m (l) = 12.5 SqM Size of wallpaper: 10.5 (h) X 0.53m (w) = 5.565 s=SqM You will need: 12.5/5.565 = 2.2 rolls

Can I hang it myself? Yes. There are numerous resources available, both on the internet and at hardware stores to aid in self installation. First-time installers should avoid kitchens and bathrooms as these are more complicated. Certain types of wallpaper should only be hung by professionals though and you must match your particular skill level, wallpaper type, and complexity of application to give you a fair indication as to whether it’s time to call for help or not. Most wallpaper stockists such as
Thus you will require 3 rolls as wallpapers do not come in half rolls. Note that the pattern repeat, walls of unusual size or shape, greater than normal wastage during hanging, or other special circumstances can affect the roll-age needs. Your local independent retailer can calculate your exact wall-covering needs based on the pattern you select and your wall or room size.
What is a pattern match? On all wallpaper, except some textures and murals, there is what is called a pattern repeat. This is the vertical distance between one point on a pattern design to the identical point vertically. This pattern repeat is an integral part of the design. A random match is one in which the pattern matches no matter how adjoining strips are positioned. Stripes are a good example. A straight-across match is one in which the design elements match on adjoining strips. A drop match is one in which there is a vertical drop between the matching design elements. With straight-across matches, every hung strip is the same as the ceiling line. With drop matches, the number of strips hung before a strip is repeated is dependent on the type of drop match. Patterns with a significant drop match (24 inches or greater) will require additional wallpaper to be ordered. By giving your measurements to the store in which you buy from, they will be able to give you the exact amount of wallpaper you will require.

Can I hang wallpaper over old paneling, brick, textured walls, etc.?
In the past, your only options would have been to work with an interior designer or thumb through hundreds of wall-covering books. At the moment websites such as http://designforliving. co.ke provides the easiest way to find that perfect pattern to suit your individual tastes. While on this site just use the IdeaBook tool to create your own and color preferences and you will be able to focus on looking only at patterns that are of interest to you!
Absolutely. Start with good preparation: remove all nails or other protruding objects. For textured surfaces, “knock down” any high points. For paneling, now is the time to ensure that the paneling is secure by adding additional nails if needed. For slick surfaces/paneling, wash with TSP (TriSodium Phosphate) or equivalent grease cutting cleaner.
What should I be thinking about before I order wallpaper? How good are the walls? If the walls are perfect, a flat finish wallpaper will be alright, or a silk/shimmer effect. If the walls are less than perfect, then look for a paper with an embossed or expanded surface texture. For areas that have a lot of use (e.g. hallways), a very plain finish will show marks. A textured or patterned surface is a little more forgiving. How much light do you get in the room? Remember, light colors reflect light, dark colors absorb light, but don’t be frightened of stronger colors, they can be very expressive and add “depth” to a room. Colors affect your mood, so think about the mood you want to create. Greens are restful, reds are stimulating, yellows are happy, and blues are cooling. Think about your own color preferences; the colors you select for your clothes. Do you want your home to be tranquil and peaceful, or exciting and vibrant? Whatever the mood, it should be a reflection of your personality. Have fun with wallpaper!
How do I remove wallpaper?
Is wallpaper “in”? The popularity of wallpaper has never been “out” but it has typically gone in waves as other fashion products. The good news is that we are currently in a wallpaper revival period, and it is hotter than ever!
Start with good preparation: remove all nails or other protruding objects. Is there a wallpaper pattern out there that could work in my unique home? Of course! Design For Living carries thousands of different styles of wallpaper in various color palettes. We have a huge selection that will work in any home from traditional African prints to an English Manor. Probably the most daunting
The current most common removal method is to use a chemical “enzyme” wallpaper stripping solution. However, these can be hard to come by locally, therefore the best solution is to hold both wallpaper edges from the floor and gently pull upwards. Additionally, soaking the wallpaper with hot water around the seams will quicken the process. If the wallpaper was applied correctly, there should be very little if no wall damage!
Where do I get wall-paper? Design For Living is among the largest stockiest of wallpaper in the country. They also have local distributors both in Westlands and Mombasa road. Both avenues have free in-house consultants to help you pick a wall-paper that best suits your needs.

Calmness Create the
Do you suffer from too much pressure, stress and never being able to unwind properly? If yes, then it’s perhaps the time to alter the colour scheme in your home to something a little more tranquil and relaxing, writes Kate Smith.
Colour therapists have known for decades that colour affects mood and provokes physiological reactions. Being surrounded by a peaceful, calming colour therefore could certainly make you feel that life is more under control and you are a little more serene. For this reason alone, blue or lavender is often found in bedrooms and bathrooms. It’s also a good tone to have in an office, as it’s believed cool colours make us more productive. In fact, it’s a colour which tends to be favoured by quiet, intellectual and reserved people and is thought to be one of the easiest colours to live with. Light blue should be blended with medium and darker shades to provide balance in a room of blue hues but the predominant colour should be light rather than dark blue. Brighter blues could be added with cushions, watercolour prints and vases.
Other ways to create more peaceful surroundings in your home include:
Keep contrast to a minimum The light brown and aqua drape and pillows in this contemporary living room provide a contrast which isn’t too overwhelming. Since the patterns use two colours that are in subtle contrast to one another and each are light shades of their respective colours the room feels both fresh and calming.
Ideal Interiors Magazine || May-July 2013 || www.interiors.co.ke

Downplay pattern and texture on fabrics, floors and wall coverings. The pattern in this room is on the accessories rather than main pieces. Even then the subtler patterns are made up of lighter shades of blue and tan. This addition of patterns adds a bit of vigour to the room without being too energetic. It is a nice touch when placed against the more muted and neutral shades of light blue and cream.
Decorating in predominately light, cool colours such as light blue, aqua, and lavender or light neutrals and use warmer colours more sparingly. A child’s bedroom with its walls and drapes in aqua has a light, airy feel. The buttery yellow, white together with light carpet keep the feeling upbeat and youthful. Using light pastel blue, aqua or even green with neutrals or other colours that are does not create high contrast but will create a space that feels calming, relaxed and serene overall.
A monochromatic colour scheme is often used to create a tranquil retreat. How restful does this bedroom look with its soothing blue shades in a monochromatic palette?

Avoid vagueness Resolutions to actualize a wow space within an office or a home setting should always be broken down in measurable results; writes ROBERT YAWE. On the weekend of the 1st of December I was in Nanyuki. This was a business trip I have been making quarterly for the past three years and has since become part of me. While on the way back to Nairobi, I chose to find a retreat spot that I’d use frequently. I shared this with the people I was travelling with. One of them said that the problem with my idea was that I will over use the place and soon it will cease to have the same therapeutic effect.
to be more detailed such as; “my new year resolution is to reduce my weight from the current 85 kg to 75 kg in increments of 1 Kg every month by reducing my consumption of sugary foods such as refined sugar, cakes, and When buying the fizzy drinks. This turns out to be a celebratory resolution. paints I suggest that
you get a roller and tray for yourself just in case you get the urge to jump in and assist in the painting.
Your resolutions That statement brought back memories of the usual New Year resolutions that we keep making and the constant rate of their failure. It is proven that the reason for our inability to meet our resolutions is trying to make too many of them and being vague at the same time. We hardly give ourselves the opportunity to celebrate the small wins made during a particular year. For example, one of your resolutions might be to loose weight; this is too vague and needs
The pill solution I feel that many a times we write articles that are over whelming to the reader as they give you a before and after in the span of 10 minutes. The side-by-side images do not help much either as they give the impression of a pill solution.
Our homes, offices and cars are a sanctuary; a place of refuge, warts and all, which makes it so much more difficult to make drastic changes. We therefore tend to adapt to the issues as they are instead of changing or resolving. Your chair in the office is slightly tilted so you adjust your posture to compensate and you end up with a persistent back pain whose source you know about but refuse to acknowledge because it means making a change.
Ideal Interiors Magazine || May-July 2013 || www.interiors.co.ke
42
As part of your resolutions for your office or house I suggest that to prevent inertia; breakdown the changes into small doses. Break them down into smaller and easier achievable tasks.
Dull lighting The light bulb in your bedroom is a little dull forcing you to bring the newspaper a little closer to your noose to read, which then strains your eyes causing ocular strain but you refuse to change the bulb. My car has had a problem with the drivers side window winder for over a year know and has been temporarily sorted out by jabbing a piece of plastic at a 33.6 degree angle which keeps getting dislodged whenever someone else drives the car. Fine, there it is I have confessed that even I am not perfect; but by the time you are reading this I will have implemented a permanent solution to that little nagging issue with my car window.
Bettering the walls Your initial activity should be to paint the walls whose first task is to get a colour chart from your preferred paint manufacturer, for most men who only know the primary colours I suggest you look for an interior designer to help
you or for the sake of harmony in the home consult your spouse who may even think of a unique wallpaper.
around the sockets, holding the ladder steady or washing the brushes. This also allows you to get a sense of ownership.
In case the preference is on painting a section of the house; make the colour selection process into a family activity, discuss the effects the colours liked by each one of you.
When buying the paints I suggest that you get a roller and tray for yourself just in case you get the urge to jump in and assist in the painting. The roller is a much easier tool to use than a paintbrush especially for the weekend painter.
It is unfortunate that the paint companies stopped producing sample paint bottles because the next step would then have been to paint a small part of the wall with the chosen colour that gives a better feel and appreciation of the colour. Once the colour selection is over we can either get a professional painter to come and do the work but instead of taking off, leaving then to do the work I recommend that the family hangs around and assists in the painting.
Therapeutic exercise
If the bug bites and you take up the roller chances are that the professional painter will only be doing the sitting room and maybe the kitchen after which you will have the confidence to do the rest yourselves. Please do not try to paint the entire house at once unless you have not yet moved in, the strain of moving around the furniture will break any family or spousal bonds. Take the baby steps and by the next resolution period the house will have had a complete makeover.
It can be a very therapeutic exercise even if all you will be doing is applying masking tape

Blinds that bind Get to know where glamour, functionality and price effectiveness strikes while dressing your windows; ZAMEER VERJEE and AMBRA MONTAGNA writes.
Window dressing is the balance between the outside world and the inside of your home and as such, it should be taken in consideration with a lot of care. Window treatments solutions can help you hide structural imperfections or obscure an unpleasant view, shield from neighbors’ curious eyes and shade from Nairobi’s baking sun. But, when talking about window fashion, bear in mind that windows are fundamental structural features which should be made an integral part of the overall house decorative plan rather than be simply covered.
Window treatments Be inspired to experiment! Pairing different colors, pattern and texture works well. However, remember that most of the time, less is more. Too much clutter at a window can result in a sense of obstruction and hemmed – the crisp, clean and tailored lines of blinds will answer all your wishes on window dressing with a lot less fuss and a lot less cost than traditional curtains and draperies. These are considered by interior designers as “the blue jeans” of window treatments, at the same time practical and appropriate, a way to transform in no time an ordinary window into a fashion statement.
Choosing blinds over curtains comes with several advantages: • Blinds are typically less expensive than curtains. • Simpler to install than curtains and they can be fixed in two different ways, either within the reveal of the window or outside the frame. • Less overpowering and simpler than curtains, they bring much more elegance to any modern room. Blinds work particularly well on small windows alleviating any

sense of constriction. At large windows it is usually preferred to hang two or three separates blinds units rather than a single blind allowing even greater flexibility in light control. • With their crispy and sleek look, blinds are the preferred choice of many interior designers who use blinds to change a room’s atmosphere without replacing the light source or redecorate the room. • Blinds are a versatile solution to dress your windows. They come in many colors, shapes and materials to suite any style, from the country to Mediterranean looks through the more contemporary and chic ones. • They reduce heating of the room without blocking the light completely. • Maintenance of the blinds is rather easy. They are coated with a thin layer of Vinyl which reduces dust storage and makes the
cleaning process very easy. Wipe them down with a humid cloth without even taking them off the window. • Particularly suggested in tropical areas, blinds are a mosquito proof window treatment. The tight threads of the materials employed together with the Vinyl coat, minimize trapping of mosquitoes. • Compared to curtains, blinds have an added control over the amount and direction of the light entering the room. Marvel in Kenya is a household name in window coverings. Their wide range of binds combines the light and view control of traditional blinds in an innovative way rewriting the rules of window dressing. Marvel has noticed the trend towards western fashion and has increased its range of colors, fabrics and materials bringing to you the glamorous, finest, most functional and cost effective window covering solutions in the market.

Bar and wine cabinets Its all about Style, Class and Beauty
If you want to add a special feel to your bar, then bar cabinets are an absolute must. They not only add functionality to your living area but also help you entertain in style with their beautiful fixtures and fittings.
With modern living, bar and wine cabinets are very essential especially in open plan houses writes Sally Aganda
When buying bar cabinets, remember that not all bars are the same so there is bound to be a difference in design and style. Actualizing the right bar cabinet calls for one to involve a professional interior designer as he or she will bring that added value and grace to your home.

Get stylish There is no clear-cut method that teaches you how to buy a classy and stylish bar cabinet. But yes, you can consult an interior design consultant - you will get to know what sort of bar cabinet you should go for and selection of a good piece. Sometimes, however, it’s better to go with the flow and customize one that speaks uniquely to you rather than banking on technical knowledge. Most bar cabinets normally have a small refrigerating unit that is ideally suited for storing things that require refrigeration There are few bar cabinets available in the market that contain a special compartment, which not only holds wine but also keeps it chilled. Of course, it is not really obligatory for bar cabinets to keep the drinks cool. Their main purpose is to store
and protect the wine bottles without getting them damaged. In addition, make sure that the compartments in bar cabinets have decent space to store the wine. The best bar cabinets are those that have a shelf, tailor made for storing shot glasses and specialty liquor bottles. Many individuals prefer bar cabinets with holders that store wine glasses upside down. The style, class as well as the beauty of bar and wine cabinets all go together to make your living area more attractive and elegant. Thus, it is advised that you choose the bar cabinet very carefully keeping in mind the décor and theme of your living space.
Styles and Designs in Wine Cabinets If you want to keep your wine bottles in good condition and avoid getting them damaged, bar and wine cabinets are the best choice for storing them safely and conveniently. Another good thing about wine cabinets is that they do away with issues of sedimentation or deposition. In other words, the flavor of wine remains the same and even after months or years you still get the same wine you bought. When we talk about the styles and designs in wine cabinets, there is nothing better than having custom wine cabinets designed according to your taste. Not only are they affordable but there is also a wide variety to choose from. The best part about custom wine cabinets is that they can be fitted in a kitchen or living room décor according to individual needs and space without any hassle. Don’t opt for too large or oversized wine cabinet as it can ruin the overall look of the bar and affect the décor of your area.

Types of Bar Cabinets There are a wide variety of bar cabinets available in the market. You can customize keeping in mind your taste. As the market is full of different kinds of bar cabinets, it’s easier to indulge the assistance of a professional interior designer to give you ideas.
Choosing Bar Cabinet Designs A wine cabinet is a very convenient as well as a safe storage place for storing fine wines. It is also an attractive piece of furniture that adds more spirit and life to the room with its design and finish. However, in order to make your room livelier with a bar cabinet, it is important to choose wisely and pick the right bar cabinet design; that is, one that looks good and serves its purpose too.
Here we have put together important information that will tell you about the types of bar cabinets available and how to best put them to use. Types of bar cabinets means the distinctive way in which the bar cabinet has been constructed as well as the unique features it offers. This information will help in making a wise choice in customizing the best bar cabinets for your home. There are 3 main types of bar cabinets namely: • Traditional bar cabinet • Transitional bar cabinet • Contemporary bar cabinet
Contemporary bar cabinet If you have modern décor in your home, try incorporating this type of bar cabinet as it is not only functional but also looks very stylish. These bar cabinets are made from acrylic finished doors coupled with glass and marble. It has arch shaped top, glass shelves, an area for storing wine bottles and a locking door that allows you to protect the wine bottles and keep them safe.
Traditional bar cabinet This type of bar cabinet is made up of hardwood, either mahogany, meru oak or mvule. You can also incorporate wood veneer finishes as they also have a traditional feel. This type of bar cabinet may not have a front door. A custom engraved traditional bar cabinet will surely impress your guests with its elegance.
TRANSITIONAL BAR CABINETS The wood used in making these bar cabinets is either walnut, pine or oak. These cabinets also provide space for keeping stemware, a table top for corking, serving and plenty of storage for wine bottles. It is an ideal choice for your bar.
All the above types and guidelines not only refer to the style or the design in which bar and wine cabinets are available; they also help you to select the best product to suit your needs, while meeting your décor requirements, storage and in keeping with your entertaining.

Bathroom Décor Today there’s certainly no better place to relax in at home than in your bathroom - often referred to as the inner sanctuary of the home. While actualizing a bathroom that reflect your taste and likes, it important to keep in mind that you need to have some sort of game plan prior to purchasing your decorative items. The last thing you want is an over-crowded, cluttered room filled with mismatching and out of place items.
Consider creating the perfect mood in your bathroom by ‘juicing’ it with décor flavours writes Lydia Opwaka.

Everything in the bathroom will either enhance or detract from the aesthetics. Functionality and practicality are key, however decoratives for the sole purpose of a decorative function add a certain appeal to your room. More than just a soap dish or a toothbrush holder, the range of accessories available for bathrooms today is huge. The more contemporary bathroom finds itself fitted with artwork and art pieces as well as framed mirrors, vases, candlesticks and so on.
“Probably the most important thing to bear in mind when adding accessories is to ensure that everything is coordinated – by colour, material and/or style – and that everything has both a place and a purpose, even if that purpose is to simply bring colour into the room,” says Sherrif Raafat, the Ideal Standard Export Area Manager. Having an underlying linking thread (be it complementary colours, or pieces of a similar style) ensures that a seamless flow is produced in this space. Settling on the most ideal sanitary-ware and furniture in the bathroom has become a popular trend. Vanities, curtaining and drapes
are becoming the norm and are a great way to bring colour into this space. Once you have selected the theme and style you like; purchasing accessories and other items that will contribute towards this style will be a lot easier. One thing you may be concerned about is the longevity of such pieces in your bathroom, and the effect that steam and water may have on them. “Ceramics stands-out as the most ideal flooring as steam as water won’t damage it along other accessories. It’s however so important to treat wooden accessories with care and wipe water up immediately,” adds Raafat.

No longer used for just basic hygiene, today’s bathroom is a space where one spends hours relaxing and unwinding after a stressful day. As such the basic elements used to design and shape the character of the bathroom are more dynamic than ever before. Ideally, it is at the bathroom that the user or owner gets a chance to rejuvenate after strenuous day. It is also at this same room that refreshing day starts. Since the rest of the home has progressed and adapted to technology and trends, so too are the bathrooms. The rooms are dramatically evolving. With more to offer, bathrooms have definite charm of the personal touch – for indeed life that is pleasant and memorable start from the bathroom. Within these rooms are styles to behold, fittings and accessories that wow the imagination that explains the endless beauty that should indeed surround one while in a bathroom. The bathroom tap is no exception when it comes to change. Aside from being available in a variety of designs, the sleek modern tap of today has also succumbed to technology’s progression.

Water saving feature Fully automated with sensors that indicate when someone is nearby, some of today’s taps have the ability to switch without people having to touch them, therefore improving hygiene. Taps have taken on the eco challenge and have now become a water saving feature as well.
Technology has made it so that there are taps available that restrict the rate of flow, allowing the reduction of water consumption without negating on design. “Reducing water consumption,” explains Anish Doshi – director at Ideal Ceramics, “means less water to be heated for perfect shower or for a comfortable wash basin temperature. Water savings generate energy savings, which result in substantial cost savings for both sources.
Aerated spouts are also a new addition to some contemporary bathrooms. These taps ingeniously mix air and water by using a screen and restrictor, which improves water pressure while limiting water flow. Anti-scald protection features in taps are increasing in popularity as well. These regulate temperatures in the tap to avoid scorching temperatures.

Taps have evolved The great thing about where society has evolved to today means that an upgrade in technology doesn’t necessarily mean a compromise in design. From originally being more liner in appearance, taps have evolved into a more free-flowing and visuallypleasing style. The aesthetics of such are of vital importance as taps are the elements that tie the composition of the room together – whether you decide in a design that complements the rest of your room or one that creates an interesting contrast, you’ll be guaranteed to find an option that suits your style and needs.
The choice of where you place your tap has significant effect on the overall look of the bathroom. From well mounted (attached to the wall, reaching over the sink and ideal for a minimalist bathroom design), to single hole, widespread handles (just as the name indicates, these taps contain separate hot and cold handles) or centerpiece options. Whatever your choice of fixture, whatever your ideal position, the bathroom tap should never be overlooked – it is the finishing touch to this space.

Redesigning Bathrooms When too many people want to use the bathroom at the same time at home, it becomes a major source of family friction. Among the best solution here is to see whether it is possible to provide extra facilities in the house, so that the whole family does not have to rely on access to a single bathroom. emember that a small shower or wet room, comprising an open shower area, small wall-mounted basin, a toilet with a built-in cistern and a sliding-door access, which can be accommodated in a space as small as 1100mm x 2200mm. So even if you are not fortunate enough to live in a large house, you may be able to find room for such an alteration. The main restrictions concern the proximity of waste drainage and water pipes, and proper ventilation will need to be provided. If you don’t have the space or the budget to build a separate shower room, it is advisable to relieve pressure by installing double sinks.
Provide convenience Double sinks provide extra convenience for high traffic areas – no waiting in line to brush your teeth in the morning, or no shaving cream drying on your face while you wait for your partner to finish with her makeup application. With double sinks, there is room for everyone.

Arvind Raghwani, Managing Director, LAXCON
According to Arvind Raghwani, managing director at Laxcon, there should be a distance of at least 750mm between the two basins, measured from the centre line of one basin to the centre line of the second: “Less distance is acceptable, but will make it more difficult for two people to use the area at the same time.”

Layout
The two main considerations that dictate layout are the plumbing system and the need to provide sufficient space around the various fixtures for them to be used comfortably. Otherwise, the only considerations are the positions of the windows and the door.
Plumbing The position of the various washing facilities in the bathroom are influenced to a degree by the supply pipes from hot and cold water. The following guidelines can help you design a convenient bathroom space
Drainage The first priority in drainage planning is the location of the toilet as this need to be close to the sewer drain. You should keep the toilet located next to an outside wall for easy access, as laying new drainage pipes beneath the floors is very disruptive and expensive.
extractor fans, or both. Extractor fans do work, but nothing can compare to an opening window so it is important to try and include one in the bathroom design. Windows are not only good for ventilation, but they are also important sources of natural light for the bathroom.
Long runs of hot water pipe are not recommended as they waste energy, and so should be avoided at all costs. In a low pressure plumbing system, the priority is to get a sufficient head of pressure by the correct placement of the geyser or the installation of a pump.
It will also be difficult to access, which may be problematic later on should the pipe become blocked. The waste pipes for other fittings can often run round one or more sides of the room as they tend to be small in diameter, but the ideal is to always aim for the shortest pipe runs, with as few bends possible. All pipes should slope gently downwards.
Ventilation General bathroom ventilation is very important and is achieved via opening windows, by

Space Planning One of the major considerations in bathroom design is the space that is provided around the various fittings and sanitary-ware. If the bathroom is to be comfortable to use, you have to allow sufficient space for movement. The crucial area is around the basin, where there needs to be a minimum of 200mm elbow room on either side and 700mm of space in front to allow comfortable washing. Enclosed showers with one or two sides require a clear floor space of 400mm next to the tray for access and dressing, while those enclosed on three sides require a minimum of 700mm of space in front. Make sure you have easy access to bath taps, and a minimum space of 700mm
x 1100mm next to the bath for climbing out and drying. Baths can be placed below a sloping ceiling, for example below stairs or under the eaves of the roof – 1200mm headroom above the base of the bath is usually adequate, but it is advisable to check the space beforehand by physically going through the actions. Similarly, you can fit a toilet in a restricted space – 2000mm headroom is required to stand in front of the pan, but the roofline can slope down to 1200mm behind the cistern. Clear space of 600mm x 800mm should be left n front of the toilet for access. A bidet requires similar space, plus a 200mm knee space either side.
Doors: When rearranging fittings, ensure that enough space is left for the door to swing open and for a person to step into the room and shut the door comfortably. If necessary, doors can be re-hung to open outwards, but take care that they will not hit anyone passing outside is opened suddenly. Alternatively, sliding, concertina or saloon doors offer great space-saving and very functional alternatives.

Fit the Fittings Fixtures, fitting & sanitary-ware contribute into creating the perfect mood in your bathroom. Since there is no better place to relax and get refreshed in your home than in the bathroom, it is important to choose your sanitaryware first, before designing the layout of the space – in this way; measuring each piece and designing the layout accordingly. Ideal Interiors Magazine || May-July 2013 || www.interiors.co.ke
67
When choosing sanitary-ware, bear in mind that these are likely to be changed far less frequently than furniture, so take care of your colour and design choices. Currently fashionable shapes and colours may look hopelessly outdated in a few years time – which is why it is preferable to choose sanitary-ware and fittings in neutral colours, and add colour into the composition using towels and decor accessories that can be easily and inexpensively changed and updated, ” says Avnish Doshi, director – Ideal Ceramics. He notes that storage is another important consideration with regards to the appearance and convenience of the bathroom. “The basic rule of thumb is to store items nearest to their point of use,” stresses Doshi adding: The ideal solution is to provide adequate storage alongside the bath for toiletries and fresh towels. Storage above and below the bathroom vanity is also very important to store items that are used regularly, such as toilet paper, make-up, as well as other grooming paraphernalia.”

Bathroom Textures Although striving for uniqueness in bathroom design may be a headache, the answer is on wall effects writes, Shrinal Patel “Bathroom design can be hopelessly mundane: Every bathroom must include the same elements - toilet, shower/tub, sink - in a configuration that will prove convenient. So, striving for individuality in bathroom design can definitely prove difficult. Though variety in sink, cabinetry and lighting design can add some flavor, with tubs and toilets, it’s hard to be original. Adding texture to the walls with a sea sponge, trowel, or paint roller just may be the answer.”
“Bathrooms are typically the smallest rooms in a home, and the wall space in these areas allow for some bold decorating decisions. Textured walls add interest to the space and can transform the room. A stucco look will complement a brightly-colored Mexican theme, while a gentle sand texture can complement a beach-themed bathroom. Applying texture to the walls is a two-day project.”
Notched Trowel A notched trowel can be a terrific way to add texture to your bathroom walls. “Apply a thin coat of drywall compound” to your wall. Then, take a notched trowel and get creative. You can swirl the trowel lightly through the wet compound in a vertical or horizontal pattern. Create intermittent texture by leaving untextured space between designs, horizontally, vertically, or both. Or, simply press the trowel into the compound at regular intervals for an interesting effect. Depending on the size of the area you want to texture, this job can take some time, but if texture is what you are after, it may be well worth the effort. Alternatively, you can determine what type of pattern or design you like and have a contractor handle the job instead.

Sea Sponge What could be more fitting for a space where water is in frequent use than a sea sponge texture on the walls? The gentle irregularity of the sponge texture can prove soothing and add an element of nature to your bathroom. You can find sea sponges at drugstores, natural food stores, department stores or bigbox retailers. Once again, spread a thin layer of drywall compound over the wall surface, then go to work. You can create rows or columns of your sponge’s impressions. You can alternate using two or three different sponges: As each sea sponge will create a different impression, your design will become varied, adding visual appeal. You might even use one sponge at the baseboard and ceiling and another to create
Paint Roller
impressions in the intervening wall space. You are limited only by your own imagination. “Painting a wall with a sponge gives the wall an interesting texture that you can’t achieve with regular painting techniques. Using this sponge texture technique also allows you to layer various colors on top of each other to get the exact shading you want for the room. Though sponging a wall is a simple process, it does take longer than traditional painting.”
If you are looking for a one-step solution, the paint roller technique might be for you. It is up to you to use a regular paint roller or a textured roller. Dip your roller into “thinned-out drywall compound,” and draw the roller across the wall. You may want to use both a plain and a textured roller effect, in alternating rows or columns. You might consider creating one effect in the tub or shower and a different one near the sink. And you might decide to leave parts of the wall without texture.

Evidently, the frameless shower enclosure can be a very attractive focal point to your bathroom with the added benefit of giving the illusion of more space. Because it’s made of glass, it gives you an impression that the entire bathroom has expanded—yes, the same kind of illusion provided by mirrors. The better part of the Eastern Africa market provides glass panels that are plain, patterned or even colored. The flexibility of the frameless shower enclosure ensures that it will fit seamlessly into any bathroom no matter what its décor is like. Some homeowners will have the panels etched, with their favorite patterns or best football team or pop band etc. The only limitation to the shower enclosures concept and design is the homeowner’s imagination and budget.
Keeping natural light A frameless shower enclosure always denotes timely fashion. It makes any space modern yet classic at the same time. The clear glass panels help in keeping natural light in the bathroom and reduce the empty and bare look generally characteristic of a bathroom. You’ll realize that a clear glass shower enclosure in the corner of small bathroom make the room look spacious and actually saves space. If you want to show your bathroom tiles design, the glass shower enclosure is perfect for that. Glass shower enclosures come in various designs and sizes in the local market. You could order for a sliding door shower enclosure, swing door shower enclosure, corner shower enclosure, quadrant shower enclosure, or cubical shower enclosure. If a person wants to experience a private showering experience without feeling of getting exposed, then he or she can opt for frosted/sandblasted glass enclosures. Today, people are using shower enclosure in their bathroom to add elegance and value; to create a feeling of openness and spaciousness, and enhance an environment of relaxation. For anyone who is unhappy with their current bathroom, just changing the shower for something newer can make all the difference. However, it is imperative that you seek for professionals to ensure the installation and the end product meets your desired expectations.
