PUBLISHER’S WORD
Timely for the times
H
appy commemoration! Ideal Interiors, the region’s sole inspirational quarterly magazine for styling places and spaces, has turned five. Faces behind it blow and glow our minds with ideas we surely need. The quarterly publication was squarely an idea developed by exhibitors at the premier Ideal Interiors Expo hosted at the Village Market, Nairobi in 2010 during the premier Ideal Interiors Expo - Gala Awards Ceremony. There is no doubt that production of the copy was opportune. There was a strong desire to reference a refreshing content. The five consecutive years of publishing bring the smile we need. And to all readers, that smile tells a celebratory tale of a publication so timely for the times. I am honoured to have toiled with a team of dedicated editors, contributors, creative graphic designers, interior designers and marketing team leaders who continue to engage with our profound advertisers. We thank you all for the unreserved support. We further salute all our well informed sources. You studied our quest and believed in our humble beginnings in actualizing this publication. The publication idea, which may have been mooted so casually half a decade ago has…alas blossomed so fast. Or should I say…Time flies!
While it hasn’t always been easy in publishing Ideal Interiors, it’s all been worth it. All of us yearning for appealing aesthetics have a reason to invest in this copy. We’ve been consistent, transparent and strong throughout the last five years. For this reason I’m excited to once again be part of the team that’s launching the next steps of Ideal Interiors. Milestones of the past five years include growing the pagination of the quarterly edition, redesigning the publication to a larger size and wider format; growing circulation; re-launching our website; continuously; launching the Ideal Interiors industry awards; and constantly evolving editorial content to meet the needs of our readers. Together, I foresee talents within this region traversing beyond our geo-borders to claim our space of bettering spaces in places that want a face. Dazed? You’ll be amazed! Watch the trends! Watch the times!

Experience the buzz
I
t is indeed humbling to join the Ideal Interiors team. I am joining the magazine editorial team dubbed “Team Ideal”, at a time when the interiors design industry is experiencing a buzz of activities.
As an interior designer in love with the pen, I find this moment so timely and special. It is great to engage with a readership that is critical and keen on what’s new, what’s trendier and what’s relevant. The timeliness of sharing the very latest in the marketplace dashes my mind to route you to the annual East Africa’s Ideal Interiors Expo. The event is the ultimate resource for inspiring interiors for homes, offices and hotels. Born in 2010 at The Village Market, the event is billed by most of the interiors industry players as the successful showcase of talented minds. Why? The event is about inspiration, ideas and business. It transforms spaces and places and the faces behind its uniqueness range from passionate exhibitors, visitors and event organizers-cum-managers.
Well as you get down to run through this edition, just remind yourself that you’ve held a facts-file publication. This is not a copy you’ll want to leave anywhere, any-how. You need it while touring various focused showrooms. You need it while at the Ideal Interiors expo. You as well need it at home and whenever travelling. Reason? It jogs your mind. Subsequently allow me therefore to welcome you to this year’s Ideal Interiors Expo slated from 5th to 9th March, 2014 at The Village Market. It’s here that you’ll network and even share a table with the region’s top interior design gurus. It is here that you’ll connect with suppliers who wow our spaces. Karibu!

SHOWCASING EXPERIENCE Raising the bar is the only way for exhibitors keen to make an impact at the annual Ideal Interiors Expo, writes Humphrey Odhiambo.

Celebrate talents Right from the inception of the expo at The Village Market in 2010, the biggest names in the big-time interiors business platform arise to celebrate talents in the now highly competitive interiors-landscape. The increased interest for aesthetics follows the awareness, which Ideal Interiors magazine, Ideal Interiors Expo and talented spatial experts continue to share. Manufacturers, well aware of the importance of Ideal Interiors Expo, each year continue to sign up in droves for the event that allocates plentiful display space to the latest and most innovative design concepts and trends.
VITENDI
The mood of the 2014 Ideal Interiors Expo was evidently
KARIBU ITALY set by precision of scaled-up participation of new ideas-driven exhibitors who set enviable standards at the five-day eventful expo hosted at Kenyatta International Conference Centre last year. More than a mere display, this year’s event provides an opportunity of sharing insights; where industry leaders can accompany visitors through an interesting interactive experience. The move is expected to harness the confidence of decision makers and heave the interiors marketplace to another next level of inspiring business.

IDEAL EXPO

DEALLY, NO BUILT-UP SPACE is complete without the finishing touches that make it habitable. Indeed, this is what makes Ideal Interiors Expo - the Eastern African inspirational exhibition for spaces; that this year returns to The Village Market – the expo’s birthplace in 2010. Evidently, those passionate about interiors have already diarized 5th – 9th March, 2014 and are prompting even their business associates never to miss out on the event’s big time deals. Those who miss it, miss out big.
Yearned for event Well, after one and half year of a lull moment at The Village Market, owing to construction of the now spacious Roof-Top Exhibition, droves of interior
designers and visitors have now a reason to celebrate the come-back of the annually yearned for event. The expo stems from a background of ensuring that a built environment gets the touch and ultimately the value of exemplary finishes.
Treasure trove Of importance, Ideal Interiors Expo offers an unrivalled opportunity to boost exports and support companies venturing into strategic markets: the event will leverage its calling in this respect and direct its gaze towards
overseas markets by again offering exhibitors and foreign visitors the convenience and comfort of at a lounge where they can meet and do business. The event attributes importance and value to indoor space, giving it pride of place at the show. It’s therefore a landmark for manufacturers and professionals in the interiors field, and is acknowledged as a treasure trove of the very best the industry has to offer in flooring and wall coatings, finishes for indoor spaces, with solutions capable of meeting all the latest demands of modern planning.

ALNO
Since 1927, ALNO Kitchens have stood for the highest quality, sensible innovations and awardwinning design, and is today one of the world's leading kitchen manufacturers. Due to the sheer variety on the kitchen market, what is on offer has become very unclear and complicated. This is where the ALNO brand rises above the othersÑit has always offered clear orientation. That's because, thanks to our many years of tradition and the skill and expertise we have acquired over the course of our 85 years, we know how to combine new technologies and contemporary trends uniquely and successfully. This means that ALNO stands for the highest standards of quality that point the way on the complex kitchen market for consumers and dealers. As the leading brand in the 'Kitchen' segment, ALNO was selected 'Brand of the Century' by a board of highranking brand experts in early 2013Ña befitting tribute to our customers' clear orientation in the kitchen market, and as such, underscores the

ALNO. Now that's a kitchen.
At ALNO, we develop a new territory for extraordinary and demanding kitchens. We have had a passion for building good kitchens for over 80 years, and we know what's important: first-rate materials, skilled craftsmen, technical precision. We check carefully every stage in the creation of each ALNO branded kitchen, from receipt of goods to final assembly. Unit base panels are tested for resistance to bending. Hinges are tested for long term durability. Surfaces have to pass the abrasion test and prove their resistance to chemicals. For decades, we have been one of the leading kitchen manufacturers in the world. Not only on the market, but also for awards received. Year on year, our design and our brand management win international awards, not only from a trade audience, recognized designers and marketing experts, but also from consumers.
Red Dot Design Award 2010 With more than 12,000 applications from over 60 countries, the Red Dot Design Award conferred by the Design Centre North Rhine, Westphalia is one of the biggest and most important design competitions worldwide. In 2010 ALNO won this award for its kitchen furniture concept, ALNOSTAR SATINA.
iF Product Design Award 2010 The iF Product Design Award conferred by the Design Forum Hannover is one of the most prestigious international awards for product design. It serves as a barometer indicating the direction of future trends. In 2010, ALNO won the award for its 'EDITION FLY-the floating kitchen' and for the 'ALNO Trend Study 2011.'
Superbrands Award ALNO won the Superbrand Award 2012/2013. With this award, the kitchen manufacturer has once again been picked out as one of Germanys outstanding brands.

PRICE OR VALUE When it comes to the ambience you desire, where do you really draw the line? ROBERT YAWE interrogates.
W
hile sitting at a bus terminus recently, I suddenly realised that fares were different yet the vehicles were travelling to exactly the same destination and this got me thinking.
The process was initially uncomfortable. However, after a while, I was at home with it just like one would get used to bike pedals after trying it out after a long break in cycling. It was clear that even though the destination was the same the passengers were very different in terms of expectation.
It became obvious that younger generation preferred those with darkly tinted windows and playing very loud music, those of my age (past use by date generation) were more interested in those which looked clean and the staff not too threatening, another group that transcends my age were only interested in the amount of the fare being charged.
Socio-economic divides A similar situation can be noted across the various socioeconomic divides ranging from products to services. Which is a clear indication
IDEAL INTERIORS MAGAZINE || MARCH 2014 || www.interiors.co.ke
27
that the appreciation and expectation of value exists across the various divides and so too is the emphasis on price. From my basic anthropological research at a bus terminus, it is clear that Maslow’s Law (hierarchy of needs) misses out on the high possibility that one can comfortably exist at multiple levels and that, unlike a ladder, one does not need to pass by each rank. Due to this many of us exist across multiple domains. We use top of the range mobile devices but take our cars to road side garages. Yes some of us own Prado(s) but have untrained and underage house helps sourced from our rural homes, have smart television sets but place them on waste paper based cabinets. Amazingly, some of us also use synthetic oils to improve our vehicle’s engine performance but still have that energy owning a guzzling and ozone unfriendly freezer in the house. All of the issues raised above relate to the words price and value. Many of us unfortunately have a problem appreciating and differentiating between them and use the terms interchangeably. One of the descriptions of intelligence is the ability to make finer distinctions which explains why a nation becomes more intelligent with talents such as artists (painters, sculptures, composers and craftsmen) who become better appreciated and rewarded.
Level of consciousness Surely, a brand painting cannot be valued based on the cost of the canvas and paints but in its level of detail and attention put into its production. Even if it was given away
with no monetary exchange (price) it will still retain its value but unfortunately only among those who have reached a certain level of consciousness.
explanation, to them, as to why the finishes and furnishings such as natural wood flooring, tapestry, painting and tiling would cost such a high price.
The last point is clearly seen when you visit a rural area and find the trees totally destroyed and the impoverished population busy burning and selling charcoal or in an urban neighbourhood where people drive the latest cars but yet have garbage dumps within smelling distance of their houses.
It was clear from the arguments put forward that all were based on price not the value to be derived from the improvements. If the Deputy President is uncomfortable in his surrounding when he rises to face the day’s work, then be sure that his effectiveness will be compromised.
To both groups; what emerges as important is the price of the sack of charcoal and that of the cars they drive and the houses they live in. hardly do they take time to think about the larger environment in which they exist. As you read this I am sure you are wondering where I am going with this line of thought. You must surely be as well flabbergasted by what I have written so far.
Authentic experience
Intrinsic value Well, all the previous articles I have written in Ideal Interiors magazine since its inception culminate with this one as the main reason why I think we as a nation are becoming more mediocre is because we are obsessed with the price of items as opposed to the intrinsic value to be relished from being in its presence. When the office of the Deputy President reported that they would spend Kes. 100M (US $ 1.14 M) to refurbish the official residence many of us were up in arms screaming and yelling about the price tag. At no time did a single reporter or commentator across the various media platforms ask about what was to be done.
His wife’s desire to entertain foreign dignitaries in the home would be reduced forcing her to use hotels and other establishments which deny us as a nation the opportunity to provide a truly aesthetically authentic experience. I would have been amidst the dissenting voices if they raised the issue about the source of the furniture and the artworks and insisting that all this must be local and clearly marked as such. It might have even helped in lowing the cost as to many local furniture designers, manufacturers and artists the value of having their pieces in the Deputy Presidents house would be priceless and invaluable. It is my sincere hope that having read this article to this anticlimactic conclusion you will think value rather than price the next time you need to add an item to your house, office or self as if you reduce your emphasis on price you get something priceless but if you reduce the same on value you get something that is valueless.
Many of us were irked by the fact that the entire development had cost Kshs. 383M (US$ 4.35M) therefore there was no logical

Hiring interior designers You are better guided by an interior designer than biting your fingers and wading through the dark where there should be light, writes ISHA SAINI. Most people believe that hiring an interior designer is only for the rich and famous, this is in fact a misinterpretation. Hiring an interior designer is an added cost but will save you a lot of time and money in the long run especially if you have invested a good sum of money in your home. Interior Designers are the ones that can help you piece up and idea that you have or give you some direction if you have no idea what you would like.
Role of an interior designer An interior design professional knows how to spend your money wisely and within budget, selects materials and finishes, finds the best contractor for the job and overseas the entire project from start to finish. Interior Designers main job is to represent their clients in meetings and make sure the work is done up to standard in a timely manner and relieves you from any stress as they take full responsibility of the project finding solutions to any problems that may occur along the way. They are the ones who make sure the project is finished to the highest quality and to your expectations by bringing the necessary people together to get the job done. installers and faux finishers, the designer has a wealth of quality craftsmen to draw from to accomplish the job. Designers are trained to save you time and energy. A designer will come up with a scope of works and time line depending on the nature of the project. Designers will know the brands and new trends in the market as well as have established relationships with suppliers which will save you the hassle of running around and doing the research on your own. A designer will be able to build a stronger bridge between you and your architect or contractor early on and will recognize design misses before it’s too late this is crucial in managing time. For example designers will be able to make decisions on where electrical points should be located in reference to the space plan. These are some minor but crucial points that many people forget to factor into consideration.
Designers offer a second set of eyes that can put a space together in a way in which you never imagined creating magical spaces that is different to any other. They are trained to identify what is right or wrong about a space and how to come up with a solution to work with the given space.

Kicking dullness There isn’t a doubt that those dull walls are thirsting for colour that ultimately speak freshness and invites relaxation, writes ISHA SAINI.
C
olour can change the entire ambiance of a space. Every dull space that needs a face lift or washed-out walls could do with a splash of paint even if it is virgin white. That’s the power of a coat of paint: It rearranges your reality which is why painting is the most oft-tackled DIY home-improvement project. You don’t have to be a professional painter to learn how to paint anyone can do it by following some simple steps. A Poorly executed paint job is easy to spot, with its drips and slips and uneven lines. This can however be eliminated by just taking a little time to prepare yourself, this will make painting a lot easier and fun. So before you crack your first paint can, schedule in a full day for the preparations.
What you need: nn Stain-blocking primer nn Paint nn 2-3 inch finish brush nn Paint roller nn Paint Tray nn Drop cloths nn Painter’s tape or a suitable alternative is white masking tape
Some handy tips: nn Keep a cloth with you to clean up drips as soon as you make them. nn Keep a wet edge, and always paint from dry to wet. This will minimize brush strokes and roller marks. nn If you do not have a steady hand make sure you use tape so that you get a neat finish on the corners and edges. nn Make sure the wall you are painting is clean and does not have any dust. You may need to use a vacuum to get rid of any dust or a damp sponge.

Choosing a paint colour: nn Always read the instructions on the paint tin, as some paints may require water to be added to them for obtaining optimum consistency. nn Choosing paint colours is an art. Remember colours tend to be darker than the swatches you see on brochures. If you are not sure always go for a lighter shade of the colour you like. nn If you do choose a dark wall color it maybe a little over whelming to use it everywhere. You may want to consider using a more natural colour on the other walls. nn Most paint companies now provide small samples of paint colours so it’s easy to see what the colours look like on your wall before buying a whole tin of paint or testing samples on your wall. nn Choosing the paint colour should be the last step of the decorating phase. nn The worst thing that can happen is that you hate the paint colour you have selected. It’s no big deal you can select another colour and paint over it! That’s the great thing about paint.
Step by step guide on how to paint your walls: nn Paint fumes have a very toxic smell so make sure you open your windows for ventilation. nn Clean the room. Make sure nothing is on the walls or against the walls. You need a clear space to work with. nn Prepare the room for painting by sanding, cleaning and repairing holes. If there are crayon or pen marks, cover with a quality stain-locking primer, otherwise the mark will show through even when covered by paint. nn Remove any nails from the wall and spackle any holes or imperfections. Sand smooth all uneven surfaces. nn Clean the walls and trim, if needed. Dust along the baseboards, windows, and doorways with a damp cloth or vacuum. nn Tape off the room. Make sure to use painters tape. nn Make sure all the gaps and holes are filled.
nn It’s always best to add two coats of paint over the primer unless one is a high quality one-coat paint. You will not be satisfied with the result if you don’t go ahead and add another coat. nn Cut in the edges around windows, in corners and where the ceiling meets the walls with a 2-3 inch angled brush. For larger areas, chose a roller. nn When using a roller, load it with only a small amount of paint from the roller pan. If you load too much paint, it will drip. Go up and down with the roller brush from one side to the other making sure the pattern is uniform. Make sure you get the paint evenly on the area. nn If you have used painters tape remove it as soon as the paint has dried. If the paint begins to peel, score the edge lightly with a razor. nn Clean up, put the room back together, and give yourself a pat on the back. You’re finished! Interior Design Consultant, Ishasaini06@gmail.com
nn Use a good quality primer, it will reduce the number of coats of paint you require.

Multi-colour magic
Multiplicity of well used colour will for sure awe your temperament and make you grin, analyzes Kate Smith, CMG, CfYH What is it about a grouping of like objects in a variety of colours that delightfully draws our eye? Do you find it almost impossible not to smile when you see something as ordinary as teacups all clad in different colours stacked together? I know it catches my attention too and makes me grin. The attraction is more than just purely chromatic. Repetition creates
rhythm in a design in the same way beats repeated in music create a melody; when the shapes are the same or similar it’s the addition of colour that hit the “high and low notes” in a room. Seeing repeated shapes in different colours within a home naturally feels as good as singing along with our favourite song. The like shapes give a design unity and the many hues add variety. When working with multiple colours the best way to harmonize the scheme is to choose three to five colours that have similar intensity or saturation of colour. For example, if the pillows on the sofa are all bright, strong colours. None of the colours grab your attention. The

The attention drawn by each colour is about equal and this helps to move your eye and add energy to a design.
Try adding multi-colour magic with paint. You could paint entire rooms in different colours or paint the same neutral throughout with a different accent wall colour in each room. To keep the spaces from feeling disjointed use the colour of one room’s accent wall as accessories in an adjoining room. Mix the proportions of the colours from room-toroom to keep the scheme interesting. Also think about punctuating an accent wall with squares, lines or circles in a variety of hues, or by using a special textured finish such as Venezia 24/7 or San Deco (available in Kenya at Duracoat Home Solutions, Fedha Valley Arcade, Nairobi). Shape can be joined by like pattern, such as this kaleidoscope of stripes to add another layer of repetition. Using the same pattern in different colours turns these two throw pillows into home accessories worth a second look. Just that slight difference draws attention and gives the mind a reason to pause as it takes in the design.
attention drawn by each colour is about equal and this helps to move your eye and add energy to a design. This does not mean that you must have equal amounts of each colour throughout your interior. When looking at the entire space, it will often be more pleasing to give one or two colours more prominence than the others, and use the other colours to accent the main colours.

Wowing kiddies’ space
Taking full advantage of multi-functional furniture assures you of quality use of space more especially in your child’s room, writes Mary GATABAKI.
We are living in an age where space has become a luxury. With land getting scarce and limited, we have more apartments coming up as opposed to stand alone homes. Financially speaking, you are all required to fork out more for a home with bigger living and sleeping quarters. In many cases, many of us are still paying top dollar for spaces that can barely cater to our needs.
With that in mind, the use of multifunctional furniture is a good and innovative way of making use of space in your child’s room. It not only enhances efficiency but is most often than not, easier on the pocket. For instance, a child can have a bed that doubles up as a study and activity area and organized storage for clothes, books and toys.

Dual purpose The two main benefits of multifunctional furniture are space efficiency and value for money. When buying furniture for your child, always list down the functions that the furniture can serve. The more the uses, the more the value you are getting for your money. For instance, when shopping for a crib, one that converts into a toddler bed has a dual purpose and will therefore save you some money in the long run.
Transitioning a child The convertible cribs are more sustainable as it can serve your child for about four years, depending on how tall your child grows. Whereas the simple cribs that cannot be converted into a bed will only be usable for your child up until the age of two and a half years. This is the recommended age of transitioning a child from a cot to a toddler bed to aid in their developmental growth.
All of the links in the land value chain are gathered here, just a few steps from one another: from development, financing, implementation and marketing to the operation and utilization of land.

Today, multifunctional furniture allows our children to enjoy furniture in ways that were not available to many of us while we were growing up.
However, it is useful to note that children develop differently; with some maturing earlier than others. Even though a cot that converts into a bed costs more than one that does not you are buying as you make your purchasing decision. Today, multifunctional furniture allows our children to enjoy furniture in ways that were not available to many of us while we were growing up. For example, a low funky activity table that is used by a toddler for a play activity such as doodling and modeling can convert to a dining area during meal times. This allows the child to eat from an

Other great examples of multifunctional furniture include bunk beds with storage and study hutches, storage beds and reading benches.
The more fun and colorful the furniture, the more the child can relate to it therefore making educational activity more interesting. Another good example of multifunctional furniture is a trundle bed this is a bed that has another bed beneath it on caster wheels. This type of bed comes in handy during sleep overs

What you must know about upholstery fabric By Humphrey ODHIAMBO
IDEAL INTERIORS MAGAZINE || MARCH 2014 || www.interiors.co.ke
51
Natural Fabrics Linen: Linen is best suited for formal living rooms or adult areas because it soils and wrinkles easily. And, it won’t withstand heavy wear. However, linen does resist pilling and fading. Soiled linen upholstery must be professionally cleaned to avoid shrinkage.
Leather This tough material can be gently vacuumed, damp-wiped as needed, and cleaned with leather conditioner or saddle soap.
T
he fabric of an upholstered piece is the most visible sign of quality and style. Upholstery fabric also is the part most likely to show wear and soil. When choosing upholstery, you should be aware of its durability, cleanability, and resistance to soil and fading.
How will your upholstered pieces be used in your home? Sofas, chairs, and Ottomans receiving only moderate amounts of wear will do fine with a less durable fabric. However, pieces subjected to daily heavy wear need to be covered in tough, durable, tightly woven fabrics. When purchasing an upholstered piece or upholstery fabric, be aware that the higher the thread count, the more tightly woven the fabric is, and the better it will wear. Thread count refers to the number of threads per square inch of fabric.
Cotton This natural fiber provides good resistance to wear, fading, and pilling. It is less resistant to soil, wrinkling, and fire. Surface treatments and blending with other fibers often atone for these weaknesses. Durability and use depend on the weave and finish. Damask weaves are formal; canvas (duck and sailcloth) is more casual and more durable.
Wool Sturdy and durable, wool and wool blends offer good resistance to pilling, fading, wrinkling, and soil. Generally, wool is blended with a synthetic fiber to make it easier to clean and to reduce the possibility of felting the fibers (causing them to bond together until they resemble felt). Blends can be spotcleaned when necessary.
IDEAL INTERIORS MAGAZINE || MARCH 2014 || www.interiors.co.ke
52
Cotton Blend Depending on the weave, cotton blends can be sturdy, family-friendly fabrics. A stainresistant finish should be applied for everyday use.
Vinyl Easy-care and less expensive than leather, vinyls are ideal for busy family living and dining rooms. Durability depends on quality.
Silk This delicate fabric is only suitable for adult areas, such as formal living rooms. It must be professionally cleaned if soiled.
Synthetic Fabrics Acetate: Developed as imitation silk, acetate can withstand mildew, pilling, and shrinking. However, it offers only fair resistance to soil and tends to wear, wrinkle, and fade in the sun. It’s not a good choice for furniture that will get tough everyday use.
Acrylic This synthetic fiber was developed as imitation wool. It resists wear, wrinkling, soiling, and fading. Low-quality acrylic may pill excessively in areas that receive high degrees of abrasion. High-quality acrylics are manufactured to pill significantly less.
Nylon Rarely used alone, nylon is usually blended with other fibers to make it one of the strongest upholstery fabrics. Nylon is very resilient; in a blend, it helps eliminate the crushing of napped fabrics such as velvet. It doesn’t readily soil or wrinkle, but it does tend to fade and pill.
IDEAL INTERIORS MAGAZINE || MARCH 2014 || www.interiors.co.ke
53
Olefin This is a good choice for furniture that will receive heavy wear. It has no pronounced weaknesses.
Polyester Rarely used alone in upholstery, polyester is blended with other fibers to add wrinkle resistance, eliminate crushing of napped fabrics, and reduce fading. When blended with wool, polyester aggravates pilling problems.
Rayon Developed as an imitation silk, linen, and cotton, rayon is durable. However, it wrinkles. Recent developments have made high-quality rayon very practical.

Making your kitchen more functional is the only thing that heartily f lavours activities that run in the heart of your home, writes AMAR SHAH. Your kitchen is the heart of your home. It has multiple functions and it is where you spend hours crafting your meals, having lengthy heart to heart conversations, art and crafts sessions with your kids, forming that new business idea and so much more. Everyone would love a kitchen that looks appealing and inviting however, it is important that it is functional. Use innovative ways to make your kitchen a trendy, stylish and functional space.
Placement It is important to remember that placement of utensils, pots and pans among others are important in a kitchen environment. To make life easier it makes sense to store pots and pans near the stove. In this regard, utilize storage that is necessary. There is no need to crap up your kitchen with too many cabinets. The more space you have in your kitchen to move and maneuver around the more comfortable becomes for your work.
Vertical Wall Storage Use magnets, hooks and rods to create organisation in your kitchen. These items can be stored neatly without utilizing a lot of space. This helps create extra space on counter tops which is always useful in a kitchens and gives you extra surface areas to work with.

mechanism helps utilize storage areas at the back that are usually unreachable. Drawer organisers help separate cutlery, accessories and other utensils with ease. Without organisers your cutlery will be jumbled together and make things harder to find. Built in bins can be installed under you kitchen sink hiding all your trash keeping your kitchen looking fresh stylish and spacious.
Hidden Appliances Appliances can consume a lot of space in your kitchen when freestanding. Build these into your kitchen within cabinets. Integrated doors that match your cabinetry this provides a smart and cohesive look to your kitchen.
Islands
Functional Accessories
If the space allows, an island is always a great focal point in a kitchen. Not only are islands a great place where you can enjoy your breakfast, lunch and dinner they are also great for storage. Islands can accommodate cabinetry, sinks, cookers and many other odd bits you may require in your kitchen without making it look too cramped. They are also spaces in which are great for interaction.
Maximise utility of corner cabinet spaces by installing turntables or “Lazy Susans. This helps keep everything you need in easy reach. Use pull out shelving to make getting to things at the back of cabinets or pantries easier. Instead of stretching and reaching into the back of a cabinet all you need to do is pull the shelf out and grab what you need. This
Open Shelving - these can be considered a great space saver compared to wall cabinets. They provide a more open appearance and have more space for storage. You can place pots & pans in an open shelf next to your stove for example to provide ease of access.
Illumination & Power Lighting is a key part of your kitchen, most kitchens feature florescent tubes or some spots. Install lights under wall units to provide better working environment on countertops. Plan where to locate electrical sockets and ensure you enough to accommodate your appliances.

The rich value of garden and mini trampoline
IDEAL INTERIORS MAGAZINE || MARCH 2014 || www.interiors.co.ke

Today, more and more hotels and homes are bringing recreation and fitness into their own backyard. This is evident that Kenyans have started realizing the immense benefits of joining the fastest moving recreation and fitness trend in Europe and the US – Trampolining! NASA scientists have discovered that rebounding is 68% more effective as a form of exercise compared to jogging even though one requires less effort. It is just as effective in improving upper and lower body strength as lifting weights at the gym. It is safer considering the damages one would incur when lifting weights such as torn muscles. Rebounding also proves a better sport than swimming which is an all-round sport. Truth be told, not many people enjoy a jog or a run in the morning. The main demerit of jogging is the amount of stress exerted on the lower limbs and the feet. The jogging increases the pressure on the feet up to four times the weight of the jogger meaning that a person weighing 150 pounds exerts 600 pounds of pressure on the lower limbs and other joints where the weight would be felt.
Using the trampoline takes off almost 80% of the body weight thus reducing the pressure on the joints. The trampoline is not only suitable for children but for the elderly who would normally lead a sedentary life with no strenuous activity. It provides a safe option for the physically challenged and for those who have recently started engaging in physical activity. Children who use trampoline in Kenya are more likely to achieve better coordination and balance during the play session. The activity involved is simple and also makes them more active which makes the trampoline a better choice than other play activities like cycling. A trampoline is a better option when different aspects are put into consideration. They are a fun recreation activity and at the same time a fitness tool compared to the television or the computer which do not entail much physical activity. The trampoline promotes interaction between family members while simultaneously achieving general well-being of each person.
enable more people to try it and at a higher frequency. This way they get maximum benefits from the trampoline. It is a holistic approach to both physical and mental growth for children and adults. It has been recommended due to its efficiency as a form of exercise and its convenience compared to other ground based exercises such as running. Mr. George Irungu, one of the directors of thrifty Enterprises that supplies German Hudora Trampolines in Kenya, advises prospective customers to ensure they consider the brand of the product, the warranty provided and whether the trampoline company has the capacity to provide after-sale services. If you purchase a trampoline from a shop or an individual who cannot supply wornout fittings when needed, then that may force you to buy another whole trampoline after some time. For safety, a bigger trampoline with safety enclosure is always recommended. More bouncing space ensures your child will be within the bouncing mat all the time.
Above all, rebounding is fun, interactive and enjoyable. These two attributes

Warmth of Kivulini Rarely are middle-class homes built with a top of the level interiors-architectural approach and mix expansive space to allow the home occupant to style the space, but as writes Jeniffer MBOGORI, Kivulini Thika is a rare homely setting with stylish apartments.
The magnificent development of Kivulini Thika situated along the Thika Garissa Road that is only a few minutes’ drive from Thika’s Central Business District set a remarkable standard for affordable residential units that is currently emerging in Kenya.. The awesomely compelling homes spaciously built on a five acre prime land is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious addresses in Thika comprising 31 beautiful maisonettes and 96 stylish apartments. All residences are characterized by light open spaces, high-quality finishing, and a design concept that few other developments can match.
Refined architectural thinking With ample parking, stunning landscaping and onsite community shopping facilities, Kivulini Thika oozes an ultimate statement of a lifestyle that combines the elements of top class living. Its refined architectural thinking thus offers a special connection to would be home-owner or tenant.. There’s no doubt the team behind the project actualized it and put the functionality of every room at the forefront. This is certainly where one

hardly feels like any other home-buyer or a new tenant in a new place but the inviting environment as well as the architectural works jogs the mind of the visitor to invest.
Large open plan While having the homely feel of the maisonettes with three large bedrooms, master en-suite, ample wardrobe space, a separate WC/Shower room, large open plan reception and a dining room with study area and fireplace, one cannot help but feel the warmth of modernity that makes Kivulini Thika significantly differently. The well ventilated spacious kitchen with a large store room adjacent to an independent store and yard is so inviting as it is graced with an outdoor nyama choma terrace and private garden. Additional benefits to this stylish home is a well thought-out guest WC/cloak room,
two dedicated car parking spots and a detached en-suite domestic servants quarter. A fascinating dedicated roof-top clothes-hanging open air space, built-in gas connection with secure external bottle cage depicts a thought process of the Developer who had the functionality of each home in mind. Interiors at Kivulini Thika are all about going beyond expectations. While the elegance starts from the wow exterior landscape, the interiors speak of switched-on pomp of a lifestyle that’s prided by many home seekers or home buyers. Elegant flooring using high quality tiles, chic built-in wardrobes, quality ironmongery, stylish and practical kitchen cabinets, quality sanitary fittings including vanity basins with mixers/taps, WC and shower gives a tinge of the positives that each residence holds.
